egas PBS’ fiscal year ended June 30. For the fifth quarter
in a row, you allowed us to exceed our revenue and membership goals without increasing the number of days on air.
Pledge minutes in our primetime and daytime children’s
programming are below national averages, so thank you for
responding quickly and generously. Several programs debuting this
month including Time Scanners, History Detectives Special Investigations
and A Capitol Fourth are a direct result of your gifts.
The end of a financial year is a time to reflect on past results and
anticipate the future. For the current television season through the end
of May, PBS jumped from the eighth most watched television or cable
network to sixth, with nearly 90% of all U.S. television households – that’s
217 million people – watching over the course of a year. Locally, this
translates into almost 2,000,000 viewers a year.
In our new century, “television” has thrown off the shackles of time.
Most of our programs are available on your schedule via VegasPBS.org,
home digital recorders, Roku or Apple TV, mobile phones or tablets, and
even game consoles. As a result, PBS has had extremely strong audience
growth in the digital space. Four years ago, Americans watched two
million of our videos online a month. Last April, PBS had more than 312
million program streams on our web and mobile platforms. Visits to our
PBS KIDS’ educational site have been particularly strong. In April,
streaming on PBSKIDS.org accounted for almost half (43.5%) of all time
spent by children watching kids videos online!
Additionally, the works your donations support have been recognized
with countless awards that represent the pinnacle of achievement in our
industry. PBS producers were honored with three Webby Awards and
twelve Peabody Awards – six times more than any other media organization. PBS was recently nominated for three Television Critics Awards, for
FRONTLINE, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Sesame Street. Locally, Vegas
PBS earned a record five regional Emmy nominations.
These successes are the result of a true sense of collective purpose
among unique viewers who make investments in local PBS stations to fulfill an essential public service mission designed to help everyone – of
every age and from every walk of life – reach their full potential. Vegas
PBS works every day to provide trusted educational programming that is
uniquely different from commercial broadcasting -- treating viewers as
citizens, not simply consumers. As you page through this month’s Vegas
PBS Source magazine, I hope you will take great pride in the remarkable
program content annual fund and sustainer gifts make possible for everyone in our community.

Before Inspector Morse, there was the
rookie Constable Morse, fed up with police
work and ready to nip his career in the bud
by handing in his resignation. That is,
until a murder turned up that only he
could solve. Shaun Evans returns for a second season as the young Endeavour Morse,
before his signature red Jaguar but with
his deductive powers already running in

Morse’s brush with death, he returns to
duty with Oxford City Police and is reunited with DI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam,
Parade’s End). Morse’s first case involves a
John Doe who plummets to his death in
what appears to be a routine suicide.
When Morse discovers the man’s mysterious final message, he begins to consider
seemingly unrelated cases, causing Thursday
to worry that Morse’s wounds may have
been more in mind than body.

Nocturne
When an elderly man is murdered with
a ceremonial dagger, Morse’s investigation
leads him to an isolated and dreary school
for girls. Endeavour digs into the school
building’s disturbing history and learns of
a series of murders that took place almost
100 years ago to the day. As the centenary
approaches, Morse races to prevent the
ghosts of the past from crashing into the
present.

A woman found choked to death with a

avid Suchet (“Henry VIII,” “The Way We Live Now”) returns in his signature role as
suave Belgian super sleuth Hercule Poirot in two new mysteries based on the
novels by Agatha Christie. Whether he’s on holiday abroad, taking a countryside
break or simply going about his business near his central London home, Poirot
finds himself exercising his “little grey cells” by helping police investigate crimes and murders,
whether they ask for his help or not.
This week’s mystery, The Big Four, plunges Poirot into a world of global espionage, set against
the backdrop of the impending WWII. The public is in a panic after the shocking death of a Russian
chess grandmaster. With the help of old friends Captain Hastings, Inspector Japp and Miss Lemon,
Poirot must navigate international figures and intrigue to identify the culprit.

Al Capone: Icon
Al Capone — the quintessential self-made American man, ruthless killer or both? America’s best
known gangster, he was the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United
States during the 1920s Prohibition era, with a leading role in the illegal activities. Just his name
sparks images of pin-stripe suits and bloody violence. Despite his illegitimate occupation, Capone
became a highly visible public figure. He made donations to various charitable endeavors using the
money he made from his activities. To this day, Americans are fascinated by this celebrity gangster.
The question is why? Repeats Sunday, July 27 at 1 p.m.
History Detectives Special Investigations:
Who Killed Jimmy Hoffa?
Former Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa went missing on July 30, 1975, never to be found. Hoffa,
a hero to many working Americans, played a major role in the growth and development of the trucking union. But he fell afoul of the law, with allegations that the powerful pension fund was under
mob control and used, among other things, to finance Vegas casinos. What exactly happened to
Hoffa that day, and why? Recently declassified FBI files and interviews with people close to the
story allow a detailed accounting of what likely occurred. The investigation is an exploration of
Hoffa’s final days and hours and a revelatory window on power and corruption in the post-war era
labor movement. Repeats Sunday, July 27 at 2 p.m.

egas PBS will expand educational literacy and technology services in
Southern Nevada with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
(CPB). Vegas PBS was one of a small number of sites chosen nationally to
receive ongoing funding as part of the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative.
The Vegas PBS Ready To Learn project is a major provider of early childhood literacy outreach programs based on national PBS children’s programs. In just the past two years,
approximately 150,000 children and 90,000 parents have been directly impacted by the program, fostering lifelong literacy and educational success.
Children often lack the basic early math, literacy and persistence skills necessary to
succeed in school and work. Vegas PBS leverages viewer support for daytime television
programs with grants from donors such as Capital One, Wells Fargo, and the Kara and
Harris Foundations to address the school readiness issue, particularly in low income communities. This RTL project grant expands the use of multiplatform media beyond television
to include interactive educational games and
mobile apps, as well as hands-on workshop
activities to engage and strengthen early
learning experiences for children ages 2-8 at
home, in preschool and in other out-of-school
settings.
Working with partners such as the Clark
County School District, Las Vegas Clark
County Library District, Henderson Library
Explore PBS Mobile Technology
District, United Way, Andson Foundation, Children
Resources
After School All Stars and the YMCA, Ready
To Learn workshops serve children throughout the community in many locations. Vegas
PBS will also provide training to local educators on how to use RTL multiplatform content
and to parents on how to engage in math and literacy activities at home.
The Vegas PBS RTL workshop program was launched in 1998 and has grown annually. It
seeks to enhance the educational effectiveness of PBS children’s programs, using related
classroom curriculum, web materials, mobile apps and community workshops. Las Vegas
children spend more than 2.9 million hours a month viewing PBS daytime programs, and
visit the PBSKids.org educational website 660,000 times a month spending 394,000 hours
on interactive educational games featuring PBS characters.
Research shows that early childhood learning can help children succeed in school and
in life. The need for low-income families who frequently have reduced access to educational resources is even greater. With additional support from our many partners, Vegas PBS continues to extend resources to help families support their children and be “ready to learn.”

fter a busy Saturday, take a
moment to relax and enjoy season two of this imaginative
crime drama. Set in the 1950s in
the heart of the beautiful English countryside, Mark Williams stars as Father Brown,
the Catholic priest who also happens to have
a particular talent for solving crimes, in this
adaptation of GK Chesterton’s novels. Many
years spent hearing his parishioners’ confessions have given him an uncanny insight into
the origins of evil and the workings of the
criminal mind. The series remains true to the
period charm of the original character and
setting, while bringing a contemporary edge.

egas PBS takes you back to the
beginning of one of the most
popular britcoms of all time!
Don't miss this opportunity to
laugh once again with the obsessive and
snobbish middle class woman striving to
climb the social ladder, as we present a
special airing of the complete first season.
If you have not been a regular viewer of the
series, now is your chance!
Hyacinth Bucket goes to incredible
lengths in her quest for perfection. Hers is
a spick-and-span house. Her downtrodden
husband, Richard (Clive Swift), acts as
chauffeur in their immaculately kept car.
Their permanently absent son has a superior name, Sheridan. Even the empty milk
bottles sparkle on the doorstep after their
obligatory rinse in the dishwasher.
Hyacinth delights in her “candlelit sup-
‘‘
pers,” but her guests live in fear of receiving her invitations. Next-door neighbor Liz
(Josephine Tewson) is so nervous that she
is guaranteed to break or spill something.
Her brother Emmet (David Griffin) hides
every time he sees Hyacinth.
In marked contrast to Hyacinth’s meticulously ordered life, however, the rest of
her family are as common as muck. They
live together in a rundown house that looks
like a junkyard. Sister Daisy (Judy
Cornwell) and her husband, Onslow
(Geoffrey Hughes), are out-and-out slobs.
Her other sister, Rose (Shirley Stelfox), is
an aging tart. And her elderly father is a
lecherous drunk, given to cycling starknaked down by the canal, chasing the milkwoman. Whatever Hyacinth does, her family can always be guaranteed to show her up.
Can she ever live down the disgrace.
This gritty contemporary crime drama
returns for a third season in this six-part
series. Taking place in the Yorkshire countryside, Stephen Tompkinson and Andrea
Lowe star as the tenacious and stubborn
Chief Inspector Alan Banks and the feisty
and headstrong Detective Sergeant Annie
Cabbot. Based on the internationally successful novels by Peter Robinson, two backto-back episodes will be devoted to each of
three stories.
The season begins as Annie returns from
maternity leave and is immediately thrown
into a harrowing case for a new single
mother, revolving around a strange and sinister child abduction undertaken by a man
and a woman claiming to be social workers.
Having acknowledged their feelings for one
another in the last series, the new episodes
will focus on whether a romantic relationship between Banks and Annie can ever be
a reality. However, there are inevitable
complications as the pair come to acknowledge their own unique and challenging
roles as colleagues and parents.
Caroline Catz will also return to the
series playing DI Helen Morton, the disarmingly blunt and often socially inept detective who joined Banks’ team when Annie
left for maternity. Helen must confront her
inflexible approach to both her home and
work life; can her relationship with Banks
help her to understand when to bend the
rules? With both Helen and Annie working
under Banks, will he successfully be able to
juggle the opposing views of these two strong
willed independent women? How far will
Banks go to keep these women at his side?

Prohibition
Thursdays, July 3, 10 and 17
at 9 p.m.
Set in the era of bathtub gin, bootleggers
and speakeasies, the series tells the true
story of the rise, rule and fall of the 18th
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Prohibition began with America’s growing
concern about alcohol abuse in the 19th
century. But it turned law-abiding citizens
into criminals, made a mockery of the justice system, allowed illicit drinking to seem
glamorous, encouraged neighborhood gangs
to form national crime syndicates, permitted government officials to bend and sometimes even break the law, and fostered cynicism and hypocrisy that corroded the
social contract all across the country.
It was called the Noble Experiment, but
it was in fact one of America’s most notorious civic failures, an object lesson in the
challenge of legislating human behavior.

ummer in Las Vegas is kind of like
the winters in the place where you
lived prior to moving to Las Vegas
– it’s a time to stay indoors and
tackle some of those projects you have been
putting off.
Summer in Las Vegas is truly an opportunity to get things done…and what is more
important than your future? In that spirit,
following is a list of questions to ask yourself
and informational items you can gather
from around your house so that you can
finally accomplish your estate planning:
• Your Beneficiaries: Who or what would
you like to leave your assets to? If you do
not have family members, perhaps you
would like to benefit your favorite charity—
there are significant tax advantages to
doing so.
• Financial Power of Attorney: Who will
Diana Morgan
take care of your money if you are incapacitated and when you are gone?
• Healthcare Power of Attorney: Who will
make healthcare decisions for you if you are
incapacitated and when you are gone?
• Real Property: What real estate interests
do you have? This includes your family residence, rental property, vacation home,
timeshare, vacant land, etc.
• Stocks, Bonds and Mutual Funds: What
investment accounts do you own and what is
the amount in each?
• Bank and Savings Accounts: Make a list
of these and don’t forget to include CDs and
Money Market accounts.
• Vehicles: What vehicles do you have and
do you have the titles?
• Retirement Plans: Make a list of your
401(k), IRAs and other retirement plans.
• Life insurance policies and/or annuities:
Make a list of these and include who is
insured and who are the beneficiaries.
• Business interests: These will include
any general or limited partnerships you
have, sole proprietorships, privately-owned
corporations, limited liability companies,
and professional corporations.
• Annual Income: List all sources of
income, including investment income.
• Funeral and burial arrangements: When
you visit with an attorney, you will be asked
about this so it’s best to give it thought and
be prepared with your wishes.
The other great thing about the summer
is that people have more time to visit with
you! And that includes our Vegas PBS
Planned Giving Council members, who
donate their time throughout the year to
encourage charitable giving. Currently we
have three attorneys on our Council who
would be happy to help you plan your estate

Nature: Salmon:
Running the Gauntlet
Secrets of the Dead:
Bones of the Buddha
Investigate the parallel stories of collapsing Pacific salmon populations and
how biologists and engineers have become
instruments in audacious experiments to
replicate every stage of the fish’s life cycle.
Each desperate effort to save salmon has
involved replacing their natural cycle of
reproduction and death with a radically
manipulated life history. Our once great
runs of salmon are now conceived in laboratories, raised in tanks, driven in trucks
and farmed in pens. The program goes
beyond the ongoing debate over how to
save an endangered species to expose a
wildly creative, hopelessly complex and
stunningly expensive approach to managing salmon.
When colonial estate manager Willie
Peppe set his workers digging at a mysterious hill in Northern India in 1898, he had
no idea what they’d find. Just over 20 feet
down, they made an amazing discovery: a
huge stone coffer, containing five reliquary
jars, more than 1,000 separate jewels and
some ash and bone. One of the jars bore an
inscription that appeared to say that these
were the remains of the Buddha himself.
This seemed to be the most extraordinary
find in Indian archaeology. But doubt and
scandal have hung over this amazing find
for more than 100 years. For the doubters,
suspicion focuses on a key figure from the
time, disgraced German archaeologist Dr.
Anton Fuhrer. Renowned historian Charles
Allen sets out to solve this extraordinary
mystery, once and for all.

bog. Archaeologists recognize it as one of
Europe’s rare bog bodies: prehistoric
corpses flung into the marshes. The corpse
eventually will be dated to the Bronze Age,
more than 4,000 years ago. Forensic evidence reveals a shockingly violent death.
A new theory emerges that they are ritually murdered kings, slain to assure the fertility of land and people. This ancient

Saving Otter 501
July 9 at 8 p.m.
This is the story of the Monterey Bay
Aquarium’s 501st attempt to save a stranded orphan otter. Watch as she struggles to
learn how to dive, hunt, eat, and fend for
herself in an artificial environment meant
to mimic the “real world.” It is a tale of
mysterious threats, persistent failures and
small victories, where survival is a long
shot at best. Throughout this program,
Otter 501 acts as a lens. Her story reveals
a previously unseen world of otter behavior and also acts to illuminate some of the
most difficult ecological questions of our
time: Do we have a responsibility to save
species that hover on the edge? Are our
actions the cause of the illnesses sweeping
through the sea otter population? And
since we simply can’t return the world to
its pristine pre-human form, are preservation efforts like this doomed to fail?

his landmark six-part series,

alive the epic story of musical
theater and its inextricable
link to 20th-century American life. The
chronological approach begins with the
immigrant experience at the turn of the
century, when a melting pot of voices and
styles gave rise to a popular new form of
entertainment. The series ends with today’s

Peppered throughout are legendary

his fascinating new series brings cutting edge tools to some of the biggest historical mysteries from America's past, as three investigators team up to solve each
case. They unearth fresh evidence, sift through clues and crisscross the country
in search of answers, revealing new perspectives on stories we thought we
knew. This week's episode explores one of the worst maritime disasters in U.S. history in Civil
War Sabotage. When it mysteriously exploded on April 27, 1865, the Mississippi steamboat
SS Sultana was packed with Union soldiers heading home from the war, killing 1,500. What
really sank the Sultana? Was it Confederate sabotage? The team scientifically tests theories
of the boilers’ failure, and researches the stories of a Confederate agent and spy, and a for-

Scotland Yard DI Richard Poole is sent to
the Caribbean island paradise of Sainte
Marie to solve a fellow policeman’s murder. Having done so, the straight-laced
detective finds himself seconded to the
local police force as the dead man's
replacement, despite his hatred of sun,
sea and sand. Poole proves to be a brilliant
detective, solving several complex murders. In this week’s episode, a woman not
only predicts her own murder but also
gives a description of the murderer, but it
all feels too easy for Poole. Can a case
from the past help solve the present day
murder? And more importantly, can Poole
convince the team that it has nothing to do
with voodoo spirits?

The Hayloft Gang: The Story of the
National Barn Dance
Saturday, July 5 at 10 p.m. on Vegas Jackpot!
One of the most popular and long-running programs on radio was the “National Barn Dance.”
Debuting in 1924, the show blended music, comedy and down-home theatrical skits. The program served two audiences — the rural farm audiences and city listeners who had come from
these communities and wanted to remember the “good old days.” The program tells the story
of a changing America though the lens of one of early radio’s most popular and influential programs. From the Great Migration of the 1920s to the Depression through the hardships of
World War II, the Chicago-based variety show unified rural Americans with its nostalgic brand
of traditional folk music and country humor, and helped define an identity for a struggling generation. Garrison Keillor narrates.

FRONTLINE: Secrets of the Vatican
Tuesday, July 8 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
The Vatican, Rome
Pope Benedict made history when he announced his resignation, becoming
the first pope to step down voluntarily in 600 years. In his wake, he left a
bitterly divided Vatican mired in scandals. Is Benedict’s successor, Pope
Francis, taming the forces that helped destroy Benedict’s papacy? Is he
succeeding in lifting the church out of crisis? Nearly a year in the making,
this special two-hour program goes inside the Vatican to unravel the
remarkable series of events that led to the resignation that shook the
world. Through interviews with those at the very heart of what happened –
cardinals, priests, convicted criminals, police, prosecutors and whistleblowers – learn the first-hand account of the final days of Benedict’s papacy and the current battle to set the church on a new path under Francis.

ho better to cover the Paralympics, the international sporting event for athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities, than Niko von Glasow, the
world’s best-known disabled filmmaker? Unfortunately – or fortunately for
anyone seeking an insightful and funny documentary – this filmmaker
frankly hates sports and thinks the games are “a stupid idea.” Born with severely shortened arms,
von Glasow serves as an endearing guide to London’s Paralympics competition. As he meets a onehanded Norwegian table tennis player, the Rwandan sitting volleyball team, an American archer
without arms and a Greek paraplegic boccia player, his own stereotypes about disability and
sports are delightfully punctured.

Follow the historical and chronological
account of the events that occurred exactly 45 years ago on July 20, 1969, when man
first set foot on the moon’s surface, taking
“one small step for man and one giant leap
for mankind.” This intense, unforgettable
documentary begins with the memorable
speech of President John F. Kennedy and
his aspirations for the nation – to the end
of the sixties, when the United States
would take man to the moon and safely
back to Earth. The most spectacular
images accompany the journey of this
memorable moment in history.

Wild Australasia: Southern Seas
Thursday, July 17 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
Australia is an island continent with a breathtaking wealth of wildlife found nowhere else in
the world. As the driest inhabited continent on Earth, it is a world apart, a place where successive invasions of people have made the greatest impact on its wildlife and wilderness areas.
It may be famous for sun, sea and surf, but there’s so much more to the marine life in Australia
than Bondi Beach and the Great Barrier Reef. Beyond the busy east coast these southern seas
break all the rules – they are stranger and more spectacular than anywhere else in the world.
Mermaids and dragons glide through the clear blue water, bizarre fish ‘walk’ along the bottom
and on tropical beaches crabs and seagulls have a tug-of-war for food.

artin Clunes returns for a fifth season as the brash doctor Martin Ellingham,
whose blunt opinions and tactless manner causes mayhem in a small Cornish
community. He gets a job in the beautiful but sleepy village of Portwenn replacing their deceased local doctor, but his abrasive personality doesn’t exactly
mesh with the pace of life in Cornwall. This new season finds
the curmudgeonly yet somehow charismatic doctor dealing
with the trials of becoming a new father. At the same time
he and the child's mother, Louisa Glasson, have issues
of their own. As if that wasn’t enough, there is

Tuesday, July 29 from 8-10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
B
ritain is extraordinarily rich in prehistory: monuments of stone, fragments of domestic life and the remains of people who walked the land thousands of years ago present an amazing tale of survival, technological innovation and revolution that laid
the foundations of modern society. Now, former archaeologist Neil Oliver travels
the British Isles to uncover this remarkable story. In part one, the land and the stone that comes
from it, is viewed as sacred. Stonehenge is the center of this landscape, a place where the living
can commune with the dead. In part two, metal comes to Britain from Europe. The art of using fire
and of working metal is a religious activity. The first swords appear, and warriors challenge the
shaman class. Wealth, imports and exports create new social forces. After thousands of years,
Stonehenge is abandoned.

ext month, we continue our
fantastic “Summer of Surpises”
with a stylish new series set in
London in 1961. The story fol-
lows the exploits of doctors, nurses and spouses
connected with a busy obstetrics ward at a
National Health Service hospital. Jack Davenport
(Pirates of the Caribbean, “Smash”) stars as a
brilliant London surgeon in 1961, when doctors
were treated like gods and acted the part. Hiding
a dark secret amid the complexities of the sexual
revolution, the story takes place in a time when
gynecologists are all men and nurses aspire to a
trip down the aisle with a good-looking doctor.
Also starring are Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey),
Catherine Steadman (Mansfield Park) and Iain
Glen (Downton Abbey).
