PNWS AWWA Young Professionals
Spring 2016 Trustee Report
Thank you Trustees once again for your support this year! We’re proud to share with you a few
examples of events and activities we’ve held since our last update in January. Below are summaries of
what we have been up to in the past few months and what we have planned for the future.
PNWS YP Sub-Section Events
PNWS-AWWA Engineering Committee YPs – Puget Sound Engineering Council’s annual
Engineering Fest
On Saturday, February 6, the PNWS-AWWA Engineering Committee
managed the AWWA booth at the Puget Sound Engineering
Council’s annual Engineering Fest at the Museum of Flight, which
coincides with National Engineers Week. The Fair is open to the
public, with the target audience being K-12 students and their
parents, and has about 25 display booths, staffed by practicing
engineers and technical people from local chapters of engineering
societies, colleges, and businesses.
As with last year, the booth was sponsored by the King County
Subsection. We were able to show kids how we filter water using a
simple filtration model, as well as show them a Ground Water
model that Tacoma Water allowed us to use. Thank you Tacoma
Water!
The kids LOVED the mood pencils provided by PNWS-AWWA
Engineering Committee, the AWWA bags provided by National
AWWA, and coloring books which were provided by the
Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District. The major items of
discussion with the adults included long showers, Flint Water, and
how we get clean water.
Once again, a BIG thanks go out to all our volunteers from the
Engineering Committee and the Young Professionals which
included Lynn (Williams) Stephens, Anh Quach, Joshua Kennedy,
Alex Fussell, and Joanie Stultz. They were a big help!

Northwest Washington Young Professionals – Happy Hour Networking Event
On March 21st, the PNW AWWA subsection held a happy
hour networking event at Rock Bottom Restaurant and
Brewery. We had AWWA’ers from several local consulting
firms Carollo, Brown and Caldwell, and Tetra Tech. The
“Flocculators” won fifth place in the trivia night, and took
home a nice gift certificate to use for the next trivia night!
Thanks all who made it out to Rock Bottom. We look
forward to the next event soon.
2020 Vision: Uniting YPs and the Water Industry – Career Fairs
At the Section Conference in Bellevue last year Chairman Randy Black announced the formation of the
2020 Vision Initiative, in which he laid out a plan to improve recruitment for our industry. In laying out
this plan Randy issued a challenge to members of the section to have every subsection participate in 2
career fairs in the coming year for a total of 24
Section-wide. While we didn’t meet that goal this
year, we did manage to participate in 12 events.
More importantly than that many members of the
organization have put in a lot of hard work building a
framework and creating resources to insure success
in the future.
Going in to next year PNWS-AWWA will be providing
each subsection with a complete career fair booth
professionally designed by the Portland based
company Fish Marketing. In addition to items created
by the team at Fish, the 2020 Vision team has created
an Event Toolbox and many supporting resources
that are all available on the 2020 Vision Initiative Committee Website.
We want to give a big thank you to the Cascade to Coast Subsection. They have been extremely busy
and ambitious, participating in 7 career fairs this school year. The big push in the Willamette Valley has
been recruiting students from Oregon State University in Corvallis to join our organization. OSU
accounted for 3 of the events Cascade to Coast participated in. With any luck we will soon be able to
support a student chapter there as well.

The National AWWA/WEF Young Professional’s Summit: San Diego, CA
The National YP Summit was held in San
Diego, CA on February 23rd-24th. Julie
Smitherman and Daniel Reisinger attended
this year and learned about workplace
communication, career advancement,
organization & leadership, and how to be a
strong Chair leader. This year was the second
year that there was a whole day dedicated to
Chair training. The AWWA Chair Training was
invaluable for learning more about the
Association and its resources, as well as learn
new ideas from other sections. Similarly, the
YP Summit provided the opportunity to learn
valuable skills from seasoned and other
young professionals. Thank you Trustees for
the opportunity to attend and learn from
these great events!

Upcoming Events
2016 PNWS Annual Conference – Boise, ID May 5th-7th
Scholarships
We have received an overwhelming response to the Conference Scholarship program this year. We
suspect this is partly because of our successes in reaching more students and YPs in recent outreach
efforts. We will be awarding 12 scholarships for a total of $4,400 to help students and YPs attend! We
asked applicants to write an essay on why they wanted to attend. Their responses reflected a deep
sentiment to connect with seasoned professionals and find more ways to become involved. We also
asked them to fill out an expense report so that we would know exactly what their financial needs
were to get to the conference, especially since the conference is in Boise this year. Six of the
recipients are participating in the Fresh Ideas Poster Competition and the other six are from Walla
Walla Community College enrolled in the Water Operators Program.
Fresh Ideas Poster Competition
This year’s Fresh Ideas Competition will be held on Thursday May 5th from 10:30am – 1:30p.m. in the
Salmon Room. The students will have a room to
present in and judges will be supplied with a table for
taking notes. Posters will be displayed on the wall
between 10:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. for judging and for
anyone else who wants to stop by to see what new
and innovative ideas these students have to offer.
There are six students presenting this year and we
have we have lined up a few AWWA members to
judge the competition. First place winner will have
the honor of representing the Pacific Northwest at
the national ACE's Fresh Ideas Program in Chicago,
Illinois June 19-22, 2016 (airfare, hotel expenses and
conference fees up to $1,500 will be reimbursed).
The YP Committee has been working closely with the LAC to organize this event. We thank you so
much for your assistance!

2016 Boise Conference Scavenger Hunt
The 12th Annual YP Scavenger is scheduled for the evening of May 5th at this year’s annual conference
in Boise, ID! This is an incredible opportunity to get to know many of the Young Professionals in our
section as well as network with other seasoned professionals in the water industry, and of course,
have a lot of fun!! A new idea for this year’s scavenger hunt is to use a hashtag for pictures taken
during the hunt and have them post to Instagram. We will meet in the lobby of the Grove Hotel at
6:30p.m. to begin the scavenger hunt. Everyone is welcome to join us at the RH2’s final destination
venue at, Beside Bardenay.
Our sponsors have generously given us $3,600 to host the Scavenger this year!! Not only did our
consultant firms donate this year, several of our sub-sections stepped up and sponsored the scavenger
hunt! We would love to thank our following sponsors:
Venue Hosts:
RH2 and MSA
Partner Sponsors:
Kennedy Jenks, Southern Oregon Subsection, Southern Oregon Water Mafia, Ferguson Waterworks,
and Mueller
Patron Sponsors:
DN Tanks, HDR, NW OR Subsection, City of Longview, South Sound Subsection, and Central
Washington Subsection
The LAC has helped us greatly with printing signs and flyers to promote our event and thank our
sponsors. Please look out for all the YPs on Thursday night at the conference and help us welcome
them to the AWWA family.

Pioneer Award
The YP Committee Trustee Liaison received six excellent nominations for the Pioneer Award for 2016.
These nominees excelled in Community Involvement, Leadership and Technical Expertise. Judges
including the past Pioneer Award winner and a few Board Members selected a winner, which will be
announced during the Friday Banquet at the conference. Thank you Jennifer Garbely for organizing this
award!
Next Committee Meeting
This year’s conference committee meeting will be held in the Friday May 6th in the River Fork Room at
12:00p.m. We will give out the awards for the scavenger hunt, discuss the YP Committee organization
& nominations for Co-Chair, and get an update on the 2020 vision.
Follow us on Social Media
