The Medal of Honor
The 16h installment of a series by the 2nd Vice Phil Shivell.
The “Wolf from Liverpool” (CSS Alabama) began to prowl immediately,
first to the Eastern Atlantic where she captured and burned ten ships, mostly whalers.
Then along Newfoundland and New England
burning ten more while capturing and releasing three others. While off the coast of Cuba
the Alabama ran down the side-wheeler
steamer Ariel carrying 140 United States Marines and all their gear. The confederates reaped 124
CSS Alabama strikes the USS muskets, 16 swords, 10,000 in federal cash and recent newspapers. Newspapers! Yes they told Captain
Semmes where Yankee ships were congregating off Galveston in the Gul of Mexico. But upon arriving on the early evening of January 11, 1863 he found five federal
ships on routine blockade duty. One of them, the side-wheeler USS Hatteras, a
1,100 ton converted passenger ferry, approached the strange ship to establish her
identity. At hailing distance (100 yards) Lt. Commander Homer C. Blake of the Hatteras saw that the mystery ship flew the Union Jack and when he asked who she
was the reply came back, “her Britannic Majesty’s Ship Petral!” When the Hatteras
lowered a boat to get a closer look at the “Britisher” the Alabama struck the Union
Jack, ran up the Stars and Bars, and blew the Hatteras out of the water in a 13 minute one-sided gun duel. (The Hatteras only had a pair of 32-pounders and two
smaller guns.) The encounter left two crew of the Hatteras dead, the rest captured,
while those in the long boat rowed to safety. Then the Alabama left for South America (29 prizes) then over to Cape Horn where the “pickins” were excellent, sometimes capturing or burning two or three ships a day.
While this rapacious merchantman raider was wreaking havoc with Yankee
shipping the insurance rates for ship and cargo soared to unprecedented heights.
Congress was besieged by irate ship owners to do something. That “something”
became the direct responsibility of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles who had
already dispatched the USS Wyoming to search for the Gray Ghost in the Orient
and the USS Kearsarge off the coast of Europe and Africa.
