THE BAR ...
It was Halloween and three vampires went into a saloon and walked up to the
bar.
"What will you have?" the bartender asked.
"I'll have a glass of blood," the first replied.
"I'll have a glass of blood, too, please," said the second.
"I'll have a glass of plasma," said the third.
"OK, let me get this straight," the bartender said.
"That'll be two bloods and a blood light?"

HILLBILLY LADIES COMPETE IN FIRST EVER
OCTOBERFEST IDIOTAROD !!
THE RACE: The 1st Annual
Octoberfest Idiotard 2013
THE CHALLENGE: Race a 5K
with a Shopping Cart. Race course
with obstacle course challenges
THE GOAL: Don’t Die!!
HBPHC Member Shira Evans received an invitation to put a 5
member team together to participate in the First Annual Octoberfest, Tennessee Idiotarod” in
Kingsport, TN.
The race would be held on September 28th, 2013.
What is an Idiotarod you ask?
The Tennessee Idiotarod is a shopping cart race in which teams of
five “idiots” grab onto or tie themselves to a (sometimes modified)
grocery store shopping cart and
run through the streets of Kingsport. The race usually features
people in costumes and themed
carts. It’s a lot of crazy fun and
unique in it is also a Food Drive
with a percentage of the proceeds
going to the 2nd Harvest Food
Bank. It’s the most fun you’re going to have giving back!
The Hillbilly Parrot Head Team
was made up of: Shira Evans,
Margaret Sells, Linda Bolling,
Charley Gingrow and Sonya
Grubb. We were the women of
awesome at that race.
Our theme was a rolling Tiki Bar.
Our costumes were hand made
parrot suits and hats designed by
Margaret Sells & Charley (aka
Lucy & Ethel).
We had three weeks to get our cart
converted to Tiki Awesome and
finish sewing the costumes.
After a few adult beverages brain
storm meetings we got to work!!
Everyone had assignments!
The Cart was a labor of love &
worked upon by Terry, Linda,
Margaret, Joe, Charley and Shira.
Our cart was on loan to us by
Kroger (Johnson City).
The costumes were designed by
Margaret Sells and she completed
five wonderful costumes that received rave reviews by the Race
officials and other competing
teams.
We tied club HBPHC business
cards on beads & they were distributed to the spectator crowd on
Saturday afternoon by the best
Athletic Supporters around.
The team was fed by Sonya
Grubb, Olive Garden. Go by & eat
at her OG in Kingsport, TN.
A HUGE THANKS TO KATHLEEN HOLBROOK, TERRY
BOLLING and JOE GINGROW
for giving out beads, taking photos
and giving up precious “Beir Garden time to support us throughout
the day!!
The race start was delayed due to
the fact it was being filmed for a
possible TV Pilot. Our Master of
ceremonies was Ben Bailey (of
Cash Cab & Comedy Central
Stand Up fame).
Once we got off the
start line the race
was on and the
challenge wasn’t
only pushing the
cart but also running through water
balloons, pool noodles, playing beer
pong, running
through tires, propelling the cart off
a ramp, tossing and
Page 3
carrying greased pumpkins … all
just to acquire challenge cards all
along the route.
How did we do? We finished dead
last but we weren’t that far behind
the other teams. ALL of our competitors (who were much younger
than us) were also exhausted by
race end.
We did win an award (all awards/
trophies are recycled objects).
What we really gained that day
was the knowledge we could compete in something so strenuous but
come across the finish line laughing & feeling like we’d just completed the Boston Marathon.
Best of all …
We didn’t die!!

Public Gets First Look As Shelter Opening Date Nears
EDITOR’S NOTE: After many
years of volunteering to spruce up
the old Elizabethton/Carter
County Animal Shelter, assisting
at Chili Cook Offs and other Animal Shelter benefits, HBPHC
members are proud to have
helped in making the new shelter
a reality!
We would like to also acknowledge HBPHC members John &
Julia Bland who had visions of a
better place for those furry
friends in need of a good home
until adoption. Their hard work &
dedication brought the new shelter to fruition. BRAVO to you
both!!
The Following Article
By Ashley Rader, Elizabethton
Star
After years of planning and fundraising, the new Elizabethton/
Carter County Animal Shelter is
near completion and could be
ready for use in October.
A grand-opening Open House
was held for the shelter Saturday
afternoon, with the public invited
to tour the shelter to see the progress on the facility.
“We are really excited to be at
this point,” said shelter manager
April Jones.
Work toward the new shelter began in 2008 with the formation of
the building committee. Several
fundraisers and other drives were
held to raise money for the project.
Two years ago, the city and the
county agreed to a joint-funding
proposal for the shelter and a new
site for the shelter was chosen on
Sycamore Shoals Drive near the
current animal shelter.
The new shelter is a 2,724square-foot building, with concrete block walls on a concrete
foundation. The shelter has a
large dog kennel area with kennels on each side with a six-foot
space in the middle. The kennels
have an indoor and an outdoor
space. Two of the dog kennels are
double-sized kennels that will be
used for mother dogs with puppies or multiple dogs that get
along.
There is a concrete slab in the rear
of the building to add outdoor
kennels, which will be needed
before the shelter can move to its
new location.
“We don’t know exactly when
we can move in,” Jones said. “We
hope that we can come to the new
shelter in October. We have a few
more kennels to build in the back
so that there will be enough space
for the dogs, and we have some
other
equipment
that needs to
be brought
over from the
current
shelter.”

This Month in Keys History ...
COUNT VON COSEL
AND HIS IMMORTAL
LOVE
(Many of you have read the book
Von Cosel & have remarked what
a great true story to be shared at
Halloween. Once again we are
sharing with our new members a
glimpse at Carl Von Cosel & his
obsession with Elena Hoyos ..
Even after the grave was sealed)
…
During the Great Depression,
Count Carl Von Cosel, a fiftysome years old German immigrant
worked as a civilian x-ray technician at the U. S. Marine hospital in
Key West. Actually he was not a
count and his real name was Carl
Tanzler but he did come from Germany where his ex-wife and two
daughters lived.
While working in the Marine hospital he met a 22-year old patient
named Elena Hoyos. She was a
beautiful young Cuban girl who
had been an entertainer until contracting tuberculosis. Von Cosel
fell in love with Elena even though
she consistently resisted his advances. By her x-ray reports Von
Cosel knew that Elena only had a
short time to live. He convinced
the young patient that he could
cure her with a special x-ray machine combined with daily doses
of a certain tonic made from gold
and water.
But in a short time Elena’s disease
progressed and eventually led to
her death. She was first buried in a
common grave but the despondent
Von Cosel obtained approval from
her family to move her body to a
nice stone mausoleum. During the
move he found that Elena’s body
had never been embalmed and was
in a horrible state of decay. Von
Cosel hired a local mortician to
clean and fix-up the body before
placing it in the new tomb. What the
family did not know was that Von
Cosel had the only key to the crypt.
Von Cosel became so obsessed with
his morbid love affair that he secretly visited Elena every night
bringing gifts and flowers, and according to some accounts, he installed a telephone in her tomb so
he could talk with her. He believed
that she could communicate with
him through voice and song.
After two years Von Cosel removed
Elena’s remains from her tomb and
took them to a make-shift laboratory he had built inside the wingless
fuselage of an old airplane behind
the Marine hospital. There he began
work on Elena’s corpse by wiring it
together and using wax, plaster of
paris, and glass eyes to restore her
to “life.” He dressed Elena in a
wedding dress and often slept with
her as his wife. To keep her body
preserved he rubbed on various oils,
chemicals and perfume to mask the
odor of decomposition.
Local folks became a little suspicious when Von Cosel kept buying
perfume and women’s clothing and
a paper boy reported that he had
seen Von Cosel through a window
dancing with a big doll and began
the gossip that Elena’s corpse was
inside his house. Elena’s sister Nana
demanded that Von Cosel tell her
the truth about the rumors. Reluctantly, he agreed to show Nana her
dead sister’s corpse all dressed in a
wedding gown and propped-up in a
chair. That was it; Nana immediately went to the police.
Count Von Cosel was arrested and
Page 6
charged with grave robbing and
abusing a corpse. He was convicted
of grave robbery, but by the time
the case went to trial the statute of
limitations had expired and no sentence was imposed. During the trial
what really outraged the judge was
when Von Cosel asked if he could
have Elena’s body back!
Because there had been so much
publicity about the case that officials decided to put Elena’s corpse
on public display at the local funeral home so the curious could
view it. Afterwards Elena’s remains
were put into a metal box and buried in a secret location.
Von Cosel left town and for the
next decade he resided in Zephyrhills where he died in 1952. It was
later learned that Von Cosel had
made and secretly kept a death
mask of his former bride of death.
