By Alternate Means
Part Three – The Process
by Don MacPherson
A
S DISCUSSED IN the last article, mediators who have
considerable experience may design a process which is
best suited to the specific dispute between the parties.
There are however, several different stages in almost every
mediation which may be identified as common to all.
The first stage is the most obvious and deals with such
ordinary issues as the actual agreement to mediate in the first
place, the identification of and
assured attendance of the necessary parties and the assurance that
they have the authority to be able
to reach an agreement. Physical
location, dates, times and the
ground rules must be established
and agreed to at the very beginning.
Once the mediator has established the course of conduct, roles,
confidentiality issues etc. the
process generally move to
Information Exchange and Issue
Identification. At this stage the
parties will normally be invited to
make an opening statement
designed to clarify and simplify
the issue(s) in dispute. This is an
important step and is useful in
allowing everyone to determine if
all relevant information is avail-

W
able or, is more information
required ?
It may be that the parties
will wish to adjourn for the purpose of securing additional information or to seek the assistance of
an expert.
Once the parties have had an
opportunity to address each other
in the presence of the mediator is
when the real work begins. In the
Problem Solving stage any number
or combination of options may be
utilized. Frequently the mediator
will place the parties in separate
rooms and conduct a form of shuttle diplomacy traveling back and
forth between rooms. During these
private discussions between the
mediator and each of the parties, it
is imperative that confidentiality
be preserved. Whatever is revealed
must not be shared with the other
side in the absence of explicit permission. On occasion the mediator
may specifically request permission to share such information
especially where to do so privately
may avoid embarrassment to the
affected party.
The Problem Solving stage is
the point at which real possibility
exists to be able to set agendas,
brainstorm and generate options.
The options may then be tested
against criteria established by the
parties.
Acceptable options should
then be reduced to writing and
agreed to between the parties. The
end result will become the
Resolution to the dispute and then
signed off.
Throughout this series of articles I have attempted to provide a
thumb sketch view of what
Alternative Dispute Resolution is
all about. There is no question that
in many if not most cases it is a
better way.
Don MacPherson is a lawyer
in Vancouver, BC.
Having been involved in
Negotiations and Dispute
Resolution for more than 30 years,
Don has attended, participated in
and presented numerous workshops and training sessions.
In addition to his Science and
Law Degrees, Don has certificates
from the Centre for Conflict
Resolution at The University of
Prince Edward Island (Negotiation
and Mediation) and Harvard Law
School (Mediation). He is available for world wide consultation
and may be contacted at :
[email protected] or Phone
(778) 330-5020.
Long distance (toll free) consultations are available through
prior arrangement by email or
phone. When you call to set up an
appointment, Don will actually
call you back from his phone to
work with you via the phone—
therefore, there is no phone charge
for you. And, phone consultations
work very well and are great for you
as you do not need to drive anywhere or leave your home or office.
Being in Vancouver, BC is great,
too, for your anonymity.

QUOTES ABOUT THE ‘TRUTH ABOUT FLUORIDE’ THAT CAN DO GOOD WORK FOR US:
S
ometimes a good quote in a
letter, or presentation, can do
more than pages of argument,
especially if it is a quote people can
easily remember.
Here is one I remember from
1997. It came from Dr. Bill Hirzy at
a meeting of the Food and Nutrition
Board of the Institute of Medicine
that determined it was safe for adults,
and children above the age of 8, to
ingest 10 mg of fluoride per day.
Hirzy said,
At the EPA they spend more
time and care regulating additives
to engine oil than you are giving
to something added to the nation’s
water supply.
Also from Bill Hirzy about why
the CDC and other agencies of the
US Department of Health and Hu-
man Services continue to promote
fluoridation,
They are riding a tiger and don’t
know how to get off (video interview
with Michael Connett, July 2000).
Yet another quote from Dr. Hirzy
was sent in by Richard Haddon from
Ottawa, Canada:
If this stuff gets out into the air,
it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the river,
it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the lake
it’s a pollutant; but if it goes right into
your drinking water system, it’s not a
pollutant. Isn’t that amazing...
Richard says he always adds,
“It’s more than amazing, it’s illogical
and irrational.”
On the science of fluoridation,
author Chris Bryson said this,
Fluoride science is corporate
science, fluoride science is DDT sci-
SINUS INFECTIONS–NATURAL REMEDIES THAT BRING RELIEF
by Ruth Bar-Shalom ND
enry used to miss work because
of his repeated Sinus Infections.
Sometimes they were mild and
he could control the pain with Tylenol
and decongestants. But often, they will
be so bad that moving the head will send
shooting pains to his brain. He could not
count how many times he had been on
antibiotics in the last few years. It was his
boss who finally convinced him to see us.
His wife had suffered for years until she
sought the help of a naturopathic physician and found long lasting relief.
When patients come to see me,
they usually know that I will recommend
a natural therapy. But the therapy is
only secondary to the correct diagnosis.
Some nutrients seem to be effective for
most sinusitis. Others are particular to
the sufferer.
Common to my prescription:
• Anti-Infection herbs, such as:
Echinacea stimulates the immune system, increasing the white blood cells that
fight against infectious organisms. It also
encourages the production of interferon,
which kills viruses.
Goldenseal contains medicinal
constituents that have antiseptic, antiinflammatory, and antibiotic properties.
Astragalus stimulates production
of white blood cells so they can kill
infection.
H
• Neti pot with saline solution. A
neti pot is a small teapot type of device
that has been used in Eastern cultures
for centuries. They add ¼ teaspoon salt
(not iodized) to one cup of warm water,
and when dissolved, pour it into the neti
pot. Next, the person tilts their head to the
side and pours the water into one nostril.
When you’re finished using half of the
water, do the other nostril. This method
works by flushing out the microbes causing the infection.
• Anti-Fungal herbs. Herbs such
as jatoba, pau d arco and other Amazon herbs have learned how to ward off
fungus in the rainforest, and their chemical composition is full of anti-fungal
constituents. A research study at Mayo
Clinic found that a high percentage of
Sinus Infection sufferers weren’t suffering from a sinus infection, but rather a
fungal infection.
• Nutritional supplements. If you
have chronic Sinus Infections, chances
are good that your body is deficient in
some of the vitamins and minerals that
boost the immune system, such as vitamins C, A, E, and D3, zinc, selenium, and
molybdenum. These nutrients increase
the white blood cell count and activity
to fight against infectious organisms, and
they increase the production of antibodies, which work against microbes.
• Eucalyptus oil steam bath.
ence, it’s asbestos science, it’s tobacco
science, it’s a racket. (Look at the
Video interview with Paul Connett,
July 2004 at: http://video.google.
com/videoplay?docid=-3949434744
498031545&hl=en#).
On the promoters’ motivation,
Columbia University historian Jacques
Barzun, wrote,
One hopes that behind the
fluoride scheme, http://video.google.
com/videoplay?docid=-39494347444
98031545&hl=en# there are politics
and selfish business interests; the
presence of solid ulterior motives
would restore one’s faith in common
intelligence. (J. Barzun, Science: The
Glorious Entertainment: New York,
Evanston, and London: Harper & Row,
1964, 71-72.)
On fluoridation being a bad and
unusual medical practice, Lord Baldwin said this:
What physician do you know,
who in his or her right mind, would
treat someone he does not know and
Inhalations done with those oils will
help soften the mucous and open the
airways.
Diet Wise:
The most important dietary recommendations when you have a Sinus
Infection are:
• Avoid all dairy products as they increase the production of mucus.
• Avoid sugar—it slows down the white
blood cells that fight infection.
• Eat garlic, onions and spicy foods.
They help to kill microbes and stimulate
the production of antibodies.
If all the above works, then it is
great! You have tools for life to deal
with Sinus Infections. If you still are
not able to control with those methods,
consider using the help of a well trained
practitioner that will help you deal with
hidden allergens, or individualize your
diagnosis to help you achieve long lasting health.

with the advice: ‘Take as much,
or as little, as you like, but take it
for a lifetime because it may help
someone’s teeth’? (excerpt from the
DVD Professional Perspectives on
Water Fluoridation).
On the limited amount of science
underpinning the safety of fluoridation, Dr. John Doull, chairman of the
National Research Council panel that
reviewed fluoride’s toxicology in
2006, said in an interview:
What the committee found
is that we’ve gone with the status
quo regarding fluoride for many
years—for too long really—and now
we need to take a fresh look . . . In the
scientific community, people tend to
think this is settled. I mean, when the
U.S. surgeon general comes out and
says this is one of the top 10 greatest
achievements of the 20th century,
that’s a hard hurdle to get over. But
when we looked at the studies that
have been done, we found that many
of these questions are unsettled and
we have much less information than
we should, considering how long
this [fluoridation] has been going on.
(Scientific American, January 2008).
And when it comes to the relentless repetitious propaganda of the
proponents of fluoridation, Michael
Connett reminds us of the quote from
Mark Twain:
History may not repeat itself but
it sure does rhyme!
May I wish you and all FAN
(Fluoride Action Network) supporters a very happy and successful 2011.
Let this be the year that sees an end to
this miserable practice in your town
or state.

SHINGLES SOLUTIONS
by Sylvia Skefich, D.C.
hingles is a condition of the nervous system
that is among the most painful conditions
there are. A latent effect of the chicken pox
virus (a class of herpes), the virus lies dormant in the
nervous system and can arise later, usually decades
after the original illness. Herpetic conditions like
shingles can flare when there is undue mental or
emotional stress (which changes the chemistry of the
body). Age can predispose the condition too, being
a result of a decreased immune response.
Shingles starts as pain and discomfort, usually
horizontally along the back following a nerve root
and can wrap around to the front side. Or shingles
can develop on the face, following the trigeminal
nerve along the cheek. A rash will develop that can
last up to 5 weeks or so. In some people, there will
be a “post-herpetic pain syndrome” that can last a
year or even many years.
Save this article, because you will want to
know what to do if you come down with this painful
condition. These natural measures can be miraculously helpful, especially if you catch it early. If you
go to a medical doctor and shingles is diagnosed
properly and caught in the first week or so, you will
likely be prescribed anti-viral medication which can
markedly slow the progression.
As far as natural measures, follow these guidelines:
CATAPLEX B from Standard Process—A
whole food derived B vitamin that in my clinical
observation decreases nerve pain. I do not recommend any synthesized B vitamins for shingles or
genital or oral herpes because they do not work for
nerve pain at all, unlike this low-dose but complete
food based vitamin (which has all the enzymes and
co-factors in the right ratios). Take 2 pills every 2
hours for nerve pain.
SUPER EFF from Standard Process—Super
EFF is made from pre-digested liver fat and helps
rebuild and support the myelin sheaths which cover
certain nerves. Take 6 per day for nerve sheaths.
LIPASE—Any quality lipase product (like Tyler brand) will help to erode the virus itself. Herpes
viruses have a fatty envelope. The lipase must be

taken with a full glass of water on an empty stomach
which will help get the enzyme in your body fluids.
Take 2-3 pills 3X/day to erode virus.
PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES—Underneath
the fatty sheath of the virus is a protein body wall.
Proteolytic enzymes erode this wall. I would
minimize using the ones made from bromelain
and papayain (Ayurvedically speaking, herpes is
a “hot” condition, and these can aggravate heat).
Other options include serrapeptase (Serramend
from Health Concerns) or Multizyme from Standard Process which is made from defatted fig and
almond are available. (You can use some of the
bromelain/papayain like Rejuvenzyme, but not at
every dose.) Take 2-3 capsules 3X/day with your
lipase with a full glass of water on an empty stomach
to kill the virus.
COOLING FOODS—Eliminate sugar, coffee,
hot spicy foods and gluten. Amp up your cooling
foods, especially dandylion, rediccio and endive
lettuce. Or take antiviral formulas that include white
oak bark and gentian (not ginseng) herbs. Ayurvedically speaking, cooling your system (unless you are
very old, weak or depleted) can be very useful to
combat all viral conditions.
COLD LASER THERAPY—Cold laser
therapy, especially high powered models, like the
“super pulsed” MultiRadiance brand cold laser can
help the pain, rash and duration of the shingles outbreak markedly. 3X per week sessions, minimally
for 2 weeks, or sometimes more, can make a large
difference in the speed of recovery and the level
of pain felt.
Shingles is a terrible condition to endure.
Should you experience a trunk pain that does not
respond to manual work, make sure to have someone check it for rash which develops within a few
days to two weeks of pain onset. Then hit it fast and
hard with these therapies to minimize your risk of
post-herpetic pain syndrome and to shorten your
course of outbreak.

here’s no better way to boost vitality
than to simplify the diet, and it doesn’t
have to complicated. A basic cleanse is
easy enough to fit into everyday life. This type
of cleanse is great for people who want to feel
lighter, feel more mentally clear, and want to
optimize their overall health. Along with dietary
changes, a dedicated cleanse is a great time to
clear out mental and spiritual clutter.
A basic nutritional cleanse emphasizes
whole and organic foods, reduces inflammation, and eliminates food intolerances. To quote
Michael Pollan, the goal here is to simply “Eat
Food, not too much, mostly plants.”
Here are the Cleanse Guidelines:
1) No processed foods
2) No alcohol, black tea, coffee, or other
intoxicants
3) No sugars or sweeteners with the exception
of Stevia
4) No dairy, eggs, wheat/gluten, soy, or corn.
These are the most common food intolerances.
5) Minimize animal proteins (some organic
chicken and wild salmon are OK).
Eat organic cooked and raw veggies, fruits,
veggie/fruit smoothies, whole grains, beans, nuts
and nut butters, broths, teas. Drink lots (at least
half of your body weight in ounces) of purified
water. And this cleanse is not about the reducing the amount of food that you eat, it’s about
reducing what you eat.
Cleansing increases your body’s ability to
release stored toxins, so it’s vital to support your
body in that process to prevent toxin reabsorption
and prevent feeling poorly during the cleanse.
Sweat often, have at least one bowel movement
a day, and minimize toxin exposure. Use fiber,
drink Yogi’s Smooth Move tea, or get a colonic to
prevent constipation. Herbs like
turmeric and milk thistle are also
helpful to support liver detoxification.
Avoid things that increase mental clutter
and toxic thoughts. Limit time on the internet,
phone and television. Spend as much time as
possible in nature. Walk outside with feet on
the earth to draw energy down from the head.
Be mindful of recurring negative thoughts and
transform them into positive affirmations.
Explore heavy or stuck feelings. Allow space
to be with and to release whatever is no longer
serving you. If past anger or sadness comes
up, take a look at what actions can be taken to
let these go. The space freed up by this release
will be the perfect place to plant some new,
wonderful, and vibrant possibilities! Consider a
check-in with your therapist or guru for support
in this process.
Exercise, breath work, Epsom salt baths,
bodywork, meditation, and rest are ways to support the cleansing of the body, mind, and spirit.
Commit to a 14-21 day cleanse program and ease
in and out of the cleanse. Prepare in advance by
stocking up on lots of cleanse-friendly foods and
ease out of your cleanse by gradually introducing
foods and monitoring how your body responds.
Carefully select foods that are going to make you
feel good in the long run and maintain mindfulness about what you put in your body.
*Cleansing/Detoxification is not safe for
everyone. Ask your Naturopathic Doctor or
other qualified practitioner if a cleanse or detox
is right for you.

S EALING B ACTERIA O UT
by David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.
believe that one of the most effective means of preventing dental
decay is the dental sealant. What
is a dental sealant? Basically a dental
sealant, or sealant, as we typically
term the measure, is a conservative
resin bonded filling that
fills in the deep pits, fissures, and grooves present on the surfaces of
teeth. The sealant may
be clear, tooth colored,
or opaque, and is made
out of a composite dental material, mercury
free. It is considered a
conservative dental preventive measure because
very little, if any, enamel
is removed during the
process of placement.
Moreover, anesthesia
is unnecessary because
the most sensitive part
of our teeth, the dentinal
tubules, is not violated.
Does it get much
better than that? I really
don’t think so. Instead of having a
mouthful of silver colored mercury
laden dental amalgam fillings by the
age of 7 as many of us baby boomers
experienced, today’s children have the
opportunity of going through life without ever having a root canal or crown
if dental sealants are properly applied
at the appropriate time. Imagine not
having to experience the trauma of
dentistry at such a young age simply
because teeth are sealed from the
onslaught of early decay. Remember
when you had your first filling and how
challenging that was? Many adults
trace their early psychological dental
trauma to those first few experiences,
and we now have the tools to help our
children avoid that situation.
What makes sealants so effective? Microscopically, toothbrush
bristles are too large to effectively
clean the deep narrow grooves on our
teeth where decay initially begins.
However, if the composite material
before the ever-present bacteria in the
mouth seals off the pits, fissures, and
grooves of a tooth mechanically, principally streptococcus mutans, takes
firm residence in these impossible to
clean sites, then the decay process is
interrupted and prevented from occurring. Assuming that flossing is added
to the daily hygiene routine, then
teeth have a better chance of making it through life without any major
destruction or restoration. How cool
is that? Having no fillings or crowns
because we keep our teeth so smooth
and clean that decay doesn’t happen is
a cool thing. I love seeing full mouths
with un-restored teeth. It is a beautiful
and healthy sight... and the way it was
meant to be. We can be grateful for all
the modern technology that allows us
I
to restore ruined teeth, but the bottom
line is we are more likely to be healthy
the fewer times our bodies are repaired
with materials that are foreign to our
immune systems.
Useful dental trivia: the most
commonly missing, decayed, and
filled teeth in our mouths happens to
be our first molars. Whenever I look in
the mouths of my older adult patients,
which are the teeth most likely to be
replaced by a bridge, an implant, or
have a crown, a filling, and/or have
root canal therapy? The first molars.
How come? Because the first molars,
teeth numbers 3, 14, 19, and 30 appear
in our mouths at a very early age when
our dental hygiene is most compromised by our own inability to ideally
take care of ourselves. This is also why
it is imperative that parents are brushing and monitoring our teeth. We lack
the skills and awareness to properly
maintain our teeth and prevent decay.
And as I mentioned earlier, even
with the best of intentions and skills,
toothbrush bristles are just too large to
effectively clean these deep crevasses.
They need to be sealed.
When do we want to begin placing sealants? Ideally when our adult
first molars erupt into the mouth.
Usually eruption occurs about the
age of six, somewhere in the range of
5 ½ to 6 ½ years old, directly behind
the primary or baby teeth molars, the
largest chewing teeth then present in
our mouths. Parents can monitor the
timing of this procedure by periodically checking these areas during this
time frame.
Although placing sealants is a
relatively simple procedure, at the age
of 5 or so, it is still not terribly easy.
Placing the material requires a perfectly dry tooth surface, and not only
are our mouths pretty small at that age,
we have not gained the requisite skills
of breathing and swallowing while
some adult is trying to place a dental
sealant. It gets easier by the time the
second molars erupt into the mouth,
generally around the age of 12, give
or take six months. However, at age
5, it is pretty challenging.
What do we do; how do we do
it? Basically, the dentist, or registered dental hygienist, thoroughly
cleans the biting surface of the tooth
with either air abrasion
or a prophylaxis cup with
paste. I prefer air abrasion
as being the more effective of the two means for
cleaning. It just reaches
deeper into the grooves,
assuring a stronger bond to
the enamel. Then, we dry
the tooth off and apply the
liquid flowable resin material into the grooves of the
molar. Early materials had
Bisphenol A, a hormonal
stressor, as constituent, but
newer materials have been
upgraded to remove that
health hazard. Are we done
now? No.
The next step we do is
to check the “bite” or occlusal relationship to make
sure that the sealant has not altered the
manner in which the teeth interdigitate.
If the bite relationship is off because
the tooth has been over sealed many
other issues can occur later. These issues are quite serious and avoidable if
the dental team takes proper measures.
I go to great lengths to have the child
feel what their “normal” bite is before
sealing each tooth. I do not want to
alter the bite in any way.
An over sealed tooth can be the
cause of headaches or jaw strain for
your developing child, and a child is
too inexperienced to link the two at a
later time, and may not even recognize
the issue anyway. As a parent, you
should never see or feel a sealant that
appears, as I call it, a frozen pond or
lake. When you can run a fine explorer
over a sealant and it is flat, like a frozen
pond or lake, then further eruption and
development of the child’s bite is going to be seriously altered, very likely
requiring orthodontics to correct the
discrepancy when, indeed, orthodontics might not have been necessary
otherwise.
Do I think that sealants are important? I sealed every pit, fissure, and
groove in each one of my children’s’
teeth. That is how important I think
sealants are to our health. Do sealants prevent all decay? No. You still
have to floss. Sorry… another topic,
another essay.

by John Robbins
ecently, California Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger signed a bill that will
essentially prohibit, starting in 2015, any
egg from being sold in the state that comes from
caged hens. This bill became law 20 months after
a majority of California voters approved Proposition 2, making it clear that concern for the living
conditions of livestock is no longer the province
of animal rights activists alone.
Recognizing how widespread concern
about the humane treatment of farm animals
has become, the California Milk Advisory
Board has now ramped up its ten-year “Happy
Cow” advertising campaign with a new series
of ads proclaiming that “Great milk comes
from Happy Cows. Happy Cows come from
California.” These ads are now being shown
across the nation.
Unfortunately, there are a few problems
with the ads. For one, they weren’t filmed in
California at all. They were filmed in Auckland,
New Zealand.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. These
ads treat the truth as irrelevant.
For example, current Milk Board ads claim
that 99 percent of the state’s dairy farms are
family owned. But, in order to arrive at this
figure, they count as “dairy farms” rural households with one or two cows. Meanwhile, there
are corporate-owned dairies in the San Joaquin
Valley which have 15,000 or 20,000 cows. It
is these far larger enterprises that produce the
vast majority of California’s milk. In actuality,
less than 5 percent of the state’s dairy cows are
family owned.

Thanks to the practices they employ, the
amount of milk produced yearly by the average
California cow is nearly 3,000 pounds more than
the national average. This increased production
may seem like a good thing, but it is achieved at
great cost to the animals. The cows are routinely
confined in extremely unnatural conditions,
injected with hormones, fed antibiotics, and in
general treated with all the compassion of four
legged milk pumps. The ads portray California’s
cows as happy. But, in actuality, one third of
California’s cows suffer from painful udder
infections, and more than half suffer from other
infections and illnesses.
Although genetically engineered bovine
growth hormone is banned in many countries
including Canada, Australia, New Zealand,
and much of the European Union, it is widely
used in California’s largest dairy operations to
increase milk production. Unfortunately, it also
increases udder infections and lameness in the
cows, markedly raises the amount of pus found
in milk, and may increase the risk of cancer in
consumers.
The natural lifespan of a dairy cow is about
20 years, but California’s dairy cows are typically
slaughtered at four or five years old, because
they’ve become crippled from painful foot infections or calcium depletion, or simply because
they can no longer produce the unnaturally high
amounts of milk required of them.
The Milk Board ads present the California
dairy industry as a bucolic enterprise that operates in lush, grassy pastures. Some of the ads employ the slogan “So much grass, so little time.”
But, California’s dairy industry is concentrated
in the dry and barren Central Valley. Here, the
cows are typically kept in overcrowded, dirt
feedlots. Some never see a blade of grass in
their entire lives.
The ads show calves in meadows talking
happily to their mothers. But, the calves born
to California dairy cows typically spend only 24
hours with their mothers, and some do not even
get that much.
The ads propagate the image that California
dairy cows live in natural conditions and the
practices of the dairy industry are in harmony
with the environment. But, the amount of excrement produced each year by the dairy cows
in the 50-square mile area of California’s Chino
Basin would make a pile with the dimensions
of a football field and as tall as the Empire State
Building. When it rains heavily, dairy manure
in the Chino Basin is washed straight into the
Santa Ana River and some makes its way into
the aquifer that supplies half of Orange County’s
drinking water.
The large-scale factory dairies in California’s Central Valley produce more excrement
than the entire human population of Texas.
About 20 million Californians (65% of the state’s
population) rely on drinking water that is threatened by contamination from nitrates and other
poisons stemming from dairy manure. Nitrates
have been linked to cancer and birth defects.
The Milk Board defends the ads by saying they are entertaining, and are not intended
to be taken seriously. But, the Milk Board is
not in the entertainment business. It has not
spent hundreds of millions of dollars on this ad
campaign to amuse the public, but to increase
the sales of California dairy products. Does
deliberately misleading the public somehow
become legitimate just because it is done in an
entertaining way?
The Milk Board knows that showing calves
being taken away from their bellowing mothers
and confined in tiny veal crates won’t sell their
product. Neither will showing emaciated, lame
animals, who have collapsed from a lifetime
of hardship and over-milking, being taken to
slaughterhouses and having their throats slit.
But, this is the reality for animals in the largescale factory farms that produce most of the
state’s milk.
Covering up this misery with fantasy ads
of happy cows who are actually in New Zealand
is not amusing. It is perpetrating a sham on the
public.
This is why I have joined with People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in a
lawsuit that challenges the Milk Board’s ads as
unlawfully deceptive. Thus far, the Milk Board
has prevailed in court, even though it’s obvious
that the ads lie to the public. Why? Because the
California Milk Advisory Board is the marketing
arm of the California Department of Agriculture,
a government agency.

My concern, let me emphasize, is not with smallscale family farms. My problem is not with the many

agribusiness enterprises, the factory farms to

States. Dr. Clark and dozens of other
Doctors have recently come across
a health breakthrough of enormous
potential. The article below will give
T
you more details on this marvelous
product. I encourage you to take a
few minutes and read this carefully.
For many people around the world,
this could be the health discovery of a
lifetime. If you or someone you know
are struggling with a health problem
of any kind, review this carefully. It’s
improving many serious health conditions for thousands of people, when no
other health product worked.
The Power of PXP
Many Doctors and researchers
around the world are astonished at the
transformational benefits of a remarkable new health product called PXP.
If you haven’t heard of PXP yet, pay
close attention. It’s improving many
health conditions that would normally
be considered medical impossibilities.
Over the past couple of months,
I’ve interviewed a number of people
about their experience with PXP. I
interviewed a distinguished Harvard
educated Medical Doctor, a Naturopathic Doctor, a Chiropractor, a
researcher and a layperson or two who
were very enthusiastic about PXP. The
more people I interviewed, the more
intrigued I became at how much this
product is changing lives.
PXP is relatively new to the United States so you’re learning of it very
early. However, it’s been developed
by some brilliant researchers and scientists over the past 17 years. So, what
is it about this unique health compound
called PXP that makes so many people
in this country feel like they’ve been
given “their life back?”
How does this one product (PXP)
get such dramatic results in transforming so many long-term health
conditions?
PXP is a special polysaccharide polypeptide formula grown and
manufactured in a most unusual way.
There are several very important steps
to the process of creating PXP. In the
development of PXP, select RARE
varieties of rice are harvested from the
fertile Siam Valley in Thailand, known
as the “rice bowl”. Select strains are
harvested at a specific age to ensure optimal nutrient value. Selected fractions
of rice are used in a proprietary process
that uses no enzymes or acids. The
grains produce potent polysaccharide
peptides that possess unique functional
characteristics easily recognized by
DNA, RNA and genes. Furthermore,
Enzacta (the developer of PXP) uses
Scanning Electron Microscopy technology for superior quality control.
PXP is composed of a SUPER
BREED of rice. This is rice, as we’ve
never known it before. In Thailand
they’ve got original rice seeds dating back 1000 years. Enzacta has
the world’s top rice DNA geneticist
working with them to create even more
powerful strains of PXP. The scientists
created PXP by choosing from 3,000
strains of rice to find the ones with ideal
proteins and healing sugars. Out of

those 3,000 strains, they found 3 very
special strains that were super rich in
these polysaccharide peptides. In turn,
the starch and waste were removed
from the rice to get just the nutritional
“sweet spot”. Furthermore, it takes
100 pounds of rice to create just one
pound of PXP. These special strains
of rice are cross-pollinated (not genetically modified in any way) to create
a nutritional profile that is having a
dramatic effect upon many serious
health conditions.
But there’s much more to the creation of PXP…
PXP is a very effective product
because in the extraction process, the
polysaccaride peptides are bonded together under controlled temperatures,
humidity and pressure. One of the
secrets to the healing powers of PXP
is the size of the grain. PXP is milled
in a specially built multi-million dollar
milling machine owned by Enzacta.
It is one of the most advanced milling machines ever built. Using this
nanotechnology milling process, PXP
is milled down to a millionth of a unit.
When the rice is milled, a naturally
hydrolyzed alfa gylcan is formed. This
unique technology utilizes a special
process that weakens the PXP molecular bond so that when it is taken
internally, the PXP is highly available
for absorption by the individual cells.
Once inside the cells, the PXP
will increase the energy level of the
cells by increasing the ATP energy production of the cells mitochondria and
provide protein for the production of
new cells. PXP is called a bio-available
nutrient because almost one hundred
percent of the PXP taken internally
is absorbed by the cells. This bioavailable nutrient is critical for DNA
repair and provides the cells with other
important nutrients such as vitamins,
minerals and antioxidants.
Because of this special milling
process, the utilization and absorption
of PXP is not dependant, in any way, on
the user’s ability or inability to digest
it. Research shows, once it’s digested,
close to 100% of PXP is delivered right
to the Mitochondria (power plant) of
the cell. Part of the “magic” of PXP
is it’s ability to essentially create an
abundance of ATP, the life blood of
every cell. In essence, PXP helps the
Mitochondria create ATP. ATP does
the rest to initiate the healing process,
energize and regenerate the human
body!
The Life-Giving Properties of PXP
The specific properties and combinations of these organic minerals,
antioxidants, polypeptides/amino acid
compounds and polysaccharides in
PXP have the ability to dynamically
stimulate the body into a natural state
of homeostasis (where the body is in
balance) therefore blood sugars, cho-
lesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure,
electrolytes and Ph become balanced,
and the natural healing begins. Furthermore, the special polysaccharides
found in PXP have a powerful effect
upon improving cell-to-cell communication—which can dramatically affect and improve many chronic health
conditions.
Each PXP molecule contains a
complete amino acid profile, complex
carbohydrates, cofactors, vitamins and
minerals – everything your cells need
to create energy and restore health.
PXP is in the form of a powder that
mixes relatively quickly in liquid making it completely bio-available.
Enzacta and their scientific team
have designed what many Doctors
and lay people believe is currently
the greatest human body fuel on this
earth. PXP is a highly innovative formula, designed to profoundly energize
the trillions of cells within the body.
Because of the depth of this formula,
PXP is improving many serious health
conditions that no other product can
touch.
Besides the effect PXP is having
upon many long term health problems,
PXP is also capable of profoundly
raising the base level of energy
and vitality for the many millions of
people who are struggling everyday
with fatigue. With PXP, an abundance
of new, youthful energy is only a few
scoops away.
Unique Points to Note About PXP:
Because of the profound results
many Doctors are getting with PXP,
40 Doctors in Jordan are making PXP
available as a prescription for their
patients. It’s that powerful!
Doctors in at least one hospital
in the Philippines are using PXP with
many of their patients and documenting its effects upon chronic health
conditions. The results are mind-boggling.
The top rice DNA geneticist in
the world is working with Enzacta to
develop the next generation of PXP…
and the next generation… and the next
generation.
The 2.5 million dollar milling
machine owned by Enzacta is milling
the PXP grain down to a millionth of
a unit. This is the secret to near 100%
absorption and utilization, regardless
of how poorly the user’s digestive
system is functioning.
Enzacta has genetic engineers
studying and cross breeding certain
strains of rice, in an effort to create
a specific nutritional profile to target
certain health conditions. They’re
always experimenting, creating new
strains—the next SUPER BREED of
rice for PXP. Through this cross-pollination process, the strain is much
stronger—a lot more powerful.
It’s important to state here
that NO GMO is used in the
making of PXP!
PXP is getting profound
results with many long-term
health conditions that might
normally be considered medical
impossibilities.
Many Doctors in the U.S.
have now been exposed to PXP
and are highly impressed with
the results. In time we expect
to have thousands of Doctors
in the U.S. alone making PXP
available to their patients.

“CONSCIOUS CODEPENDENCE”
C
odependent behavior can
destroy relationships and
produce much unhappiness.
There are recovery groups all over
the world dedicated to helping people
with this often crippling personal and
relationship dynamic. How do we heal
codependence?
I need to begin with a good defi-
nition of this term. Codependence literally means “dependence together,”
or mutual dependence. Originating in
the twelve-step recovery movement,
it was used to describe how an individual, by either action or inaction,
perpetuates a partner or spouse’s
addiction or harmful behavior. The
classic example is the wife who is in

which the immune system attacks
the brain and spinal cord, leading
to nerve degeneration and loss of
muscle control. Lynn, who now uses
a wheelchair, regularly attends yoga
classes led by Annica Rose, a Yoga

years. Lynn is one of several students
in Annica’s Adaptive Yoga class, living with multiple sclerosis, in addition
to others whose conditions limit their
physical mobility.

her the best possible chance of receiving what she needs.
Our codependence can often be
traced to our inner child’s need for
love, our fear of that need not being
met, and our protective mechanism
(my anger over my slippers and the
mother’s complaining) to keep this
vulnerable child hidden from view—
and therefore protected from possible
hurt or rejection. The healing comes
when we find the courage to make
peace with the needs of our vulnerable
inner child.
It is healthy to feel our physical,
emotional, psychological and spiritual
needs for others, because this represents a humble acceptance of where we
stand as human beings. It is unhealthy,
however, to project those needs onto
someone else and expect or demand
that they do something about them.
This projection is manipulative and is
the root of codependent behavior. It
is looking outside of ourselves for the
source of our happiness. We will never
find it out there. The healthy position
is to feel both our human need for love
as well as the divine source of that love
in ourselves and in others.
Joyce and I certainly have our
share of codependence. When we eat
at a restaurant and

Lynn, loves her yoga classes with
Annica and a team of skilled assistants.
“It is like being held by angels,” she
describes, as she is gently placed into
a posture and supported with blankets, pillows, and other props. With a
peaceful smile on her face, Lynn said,
“When I do yoga, I feel relaxed and the
pain in my body goes away.”
The Adaptive Yoga Project,
founded by Annica, offers yoga
classes adapted to fit the needs of
individuals like Lynn who are learning how to function optimally with
various diagnoses including arthritis,
osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spinal chord injuries or
conditions that limit physical mobility.
Adaptive Yoga classes are designed
to help students develop greater body
awareness and increase their capacity
to move in space, surrender to gravity,
and gain strength.
Annica, who recently celebrated
her 61st birthday is spunky and agile.
“I do yoga every day because it helps
me stay active,” she said, “and it helps
calm my mind and let go of tension.”
Annica was born in Scotland and grew
up in Canada where she began practicing yoga in 1970. A health practitioner and health educator since 1985,
Annica has established a dedicated following of yoga students in Santa Cruz.
Her innovation and enthusiasm have
helped hundreds of students manage
challenging conditions and develop a
personal yoga practice.
Several years ago Annica earned
her certification as a Yoga Therapist
and later attended a workshop by
Matthew Sanford, a renowned yoga
instructor who endured a spinal cord
injury and was paralyzed from the
waist down. Through yoga, Sanford
gradually rehabilitated himself to
voluntarily move the muscles in his
legs.
The physical benefits of Adaptive
Yoga classes for individuals with disabilities include increased circulation,
mobility, balance, coordination and
core strength, as well as decreased
aches and pains. With over 40 years
of experience and training in yoga,
Annica is like a skilled x-ray technician who can spot areas of tension or
misalignment in her students’ bodies.
Annica and her trained assistants
provide hands on adjustments and
support, adapting each posture for
the individual needs of each student.
Annica insists that assistants become
very familiar with each student’s base
comfort zone and honor their presence in that space before suggesting
and encouraging the body to explore
positions which will ultimately bring
more balance, greater flexibility and
perhaps strength.
“I have learned that yoga helps
us access the deeper aspect of ourselves beyond the physical,” said
Annica. “I am here to hold the space
for my students to release into their
own potential and to experience this
transformation, physically and emotionally.”
The Adaptive Yoga Project offers
classes weekly at the Pacific Cultural
Center on Sundays from 1:30-3:30pm
and Wednesdays from 12-1:30pm, on
a sliding scale. Adaptive Yoga classes
are appropriate for those in wheelchairs, new and ongoing beginners and
seniors, those recovering from surgery
or injuries and individuals with limited
physical mobility. Annica encourages
new students to consult their health
care providers before attending class
and to call in advance for a quick
consult. Private Consultations are
available for those not quite ready to
join a class.

denial of her husband’s
alcoholism. Perhaps
she tries harder to love
him, or she tries to control his drinking
by emptying the liquor bottles down
the sink. The codependent person has
usually learned in childhood to make
another person’s needs more important
than their own, and therefore often
becomes a caretaker of others to the
detriment of themselves.
However, I have developed a
broader definition of codependence as
unconscious need or dependence upon
another person. It is, in a way, a refusal
to acknowledge the importance of our
own emotional needs. To a degree, this
definition applies to all of us.
Interdependence, on the other
hand, is the awareness of our need
for one another. Embracing our interdependence brings more love and
consciousness into all of our relationships.
There is a vast difference between
feeling our need for another (an aspect
of interdependence) and expecting or
demanding another to fill that need (an
aspect of codependence). Interdepen-
dence implies taking responsibility for
our feelings, desires and actions. When
we don’t take responsibility for our
feelings, a codependent interaction is
the result. For example, the other day
I felt annoyed with Joyce because I
couldn’t find my slippers and was
convinced she had put them away.
In my unconscious mind, I wanted
and expected Joyce (“Mommy”) to
take care of my inner child. If, in that
moment, I could have recognized that
my need for love was far greater than
my need for my slippers, it’s possible
I could’ve been vulnerable with Joyce,
and thus had a loving connection with
her. When we touch this conscious
awareness of our need for another, we
touch the joy of interdependence – and
we heal our codependence.
Another example of codependence is the mother who complains
to her grown children that they don’t
telephone her enough. (I’m not pointing fingers here!) Her complaining
is an unconscious cover-up for her
need for their love and attention. The
result is often not what she wants: her
children feel guilty or angry, and end
up calling her even less. If she can be
more emotionally honest and simply
share her need for love and connection
with her family, her honesty will give

Use Your Inner Compass
As you set sail, knowing where
you are headed helps to steer your
ship. Sure, you might not be able to
predict the wind or ocean currents,
yet your direction is up to you. Being
precise in your intentions gives you a
greater chance of actually arriving at
your destination.
Not sure where to go? Even if you
feel unclear, the deeper truth is you
do know what you really want. Your
greater authenticity may be veiled by
perceived limitations, “shoulds” and
all kinds of reasons for why you can’t
live the life you yearn for. Your reality-based mind might keep tight reign
on the dreams your heart and soul
desire. For what price? Who says
you can’t create what you want? And

eng Shui is an intricate system
of working with our surroundings to bring harmony and
prosperity to our lives. This practice
comes from China and dates back approximately 5000 years. Feng Shui
can be applied to a home, office or
property. The art of Feng Shui recognizes that the buildings we live and
work in and the land we live on can
have a profound influence on our lives
for good or ill. Feng Shui can initiate
positive changes and personal growth
for the occupants.
Chi is the life force energy that
is inside of us and is all around us
in nature. We want to invite this life
force energy into our homes, thus
inviting health and prosperity to our
lives. A building’s layout, placement
of furniture, and clutter can affect
how chi flows within the building.
Past events such as foreclosure or the
divorce of previous residents can also
have an effect on the chi flow of the
property. As a Feng Shui Practitioner,
I am concerned with how chi flows
through a building and with the chi of
the earth around that building.
F
than the song of
your soul?
Life is all
about choice. You
are the captain of
your ship, and if
you say something
is not possible, it
won’t be. However, when you lift
the deceptive fog
of conditioning, a
whole new world
comes into view.
Like a sailor who has been staring
out at endless seas, suddenly, there is
land, and it is as real as the rocks of
Gibraltar.
Create Your Itinerary
So, all “ifs and buts” aside, what
do you want? What are the dreams and
themes of your life? What destinations
do you want to set sail for?
Dream big. Take a walk on the
beach, make a date with your journal
and envision the life you want. Don’t
let yourself be restricted by what you
think is possible. Looking back many
years from now, what will have you
feeling fulfilled and grateful?
In making a plan for 2011, consider the changing energies throughout
the year. Your own rhythm—as well
as the seasonal cycles—lends itself to
shifting focus. For example, while
the beginning of the year is perfect
for catalyzing new projects, the slower
summer months naturally invoke
travel and leisure, while the later part
of the year brings introspection and
incubation.
During a
Feng Shui consultation, I meet with
the client and assess the property.
I then provide recommendations to
correct any problems found during the assessment.
Most of the time, the problems I find
with the property directly corresponds
to issues in the client’s life. Feng
Shui recognizes that our homes are
a mirror for every aspect of our lives
and provides a way to work with this
mirror. For example, if your front
door is difficult to find, opportunities
that may enrich your life financially
and socially will not be able to find
you. Feng Shui recommendations
can be anything from the placement
of furniture to using mirrors, crystals,
plants, color, clearing clutter, or space
clearing ceremonies.
Feng Shui teaches us that change
is the only constant in life. The balance and harmony created by Feng
Shui helps life move smoothly and
lends support when changes come our
way. Feng Shui helps with financial
Sail The Currents
When you are
out at sea, you are
certainly free to go
against the ocean
currents—or you can
align yourself with the
natural flow, and sail
to your destination with ease and style.
In a similar fashion, as you move
through your year, as well as through
your days, be clear in your intentions,
yet flexible in your approach. The
greater intelligence within and around
you often far surpasses any solution
you could come up with consciously.
Be open and playful in allowing your
destiny to unfold, accept and adapt to
what occurs, and flow with events,
rather than against them. Your plans,
and what emerges in the universe, in
your life and in your day, can form a
dynamic synergistic dance—as you
notice and sail the currents.
In moving towards your dreams,
connect with people who inspire you.
Successful folks haven’t gotten there
alone. As a matter of fact, the greater
the accomplishments, the greater may
be the caliber of the help involved.
Hire experts for maximum results
– having dedicated allies on your side
creates synergy for you to succeed on
a whole new level.
Last but not least, don’t postpone
happiness until you have reached your
destination. Your life is happening
right now, not when your ship comes
in. And even as you reach the horizon,
a new one appears. Love and welcome
every moment of your journey.

appy New Year! Welcome to
the first article of a two-part
series (Look for the second
in our Feb. issue!) on how to love
and be loved more deeply!! If you
are game, I encourage you to actively
work with the ideas and tools offered
in this article over the next month and
note what changes occur for you. You
may be surprised! In February, we’ll
kick it up a notch!
The key to deeper loving is

bridge between the physical and the
spiritual. It is through our hearts that
our souls help us to create meaningful and joyous lives—with greater or
lesser ease depending upon how open,
responsive and courageous we are in
our hearts.
At the start of a new year and
with Valentine’s Day imminent, it is a
perfect time to expand our abilities
to love and be loved by consciously
developing our hearts. We have a
relationship with our hearts, even
though we may not realize it, and that
relationship, like any other, is nurtured
and strengthened, with conscious, loving attention. In order to be strong
and healthy, our hearts must be
actively supported. The next step is
to be more aware of what you want to
create for yourself. The clearer we
are with our desires, the easier it
is for our souls to help us manifest
them through our hearts. So, what
intentions do you have for love? What
are your dreams?
Following are some simple tools to
help with developing the heart and
getting clearer:
• Value It—First of all, value it
more. We have learned to minimize,
ignore, belittle, distrust, and squish our
precious hearts. Recognizing its value,
instantly opens you significantly to its
expression. Love it. Nurture it.

The reason you may still be in
a quandary about your life, and how
you are living it, and the reason you
still get lessons that cause discomfort,
is you still believe in time. You still
think that there really is a past that you
came from and a future that you are
stepping into.
In the real world—the one that
is your source—there is no time, for
the real world is unchangeable, and
nothing can act on it to make it less
than eternal. Time comes from you
and all your beliefs about it. Enough
have gathered to agree to certain commonalities, based on changing systems.
In the real world, there are no systems,
nothing that rules you, nothing that
you can rule; nothing that gives you,
or takes from you, anything against
your will. And nothing that is not the
unconditional love of a frequency so
great that it simply holds the quiet

Ask it questions,
and open to receive the answers. Tune
in to the feelings or messages that
you get. Let it help you make decisions and teach you its “vocabulary.”
Trust it.
• Feed It—Seek beauty, express
love freely and courageously, be creative, connect with nature.
• Criteria—List your “criteria”
for loving partnership, for yourself and
your love. Start with your “top ten”
and go from there. Have fun, let your
heart lead you.
• Visioning and Vision Board—
Think about what you truly envision
and desire for yourself. Picture it.
Dream big! Don’t limit yourself. Feel
it. Breath it in. Let the “movie” play

visions, and if you want, express it as
a vision board.

grow in love together! See you next

space for you to create your life as you
are thinking it.
Where are you on the time clock
of your life? Are you feeling anxious
about your unfulfilled dreams, thinking there may not be time, or are you
thinking that you may be the one, in the
history of humans, who will never die?
Whatever your belief, if you believe it
so greatly that you know it to be true,
and you have no question about this,
then it must be so. This is the law that
overrules time. What would you be
doing right now, if you knew, or were
willing to test the possibility, that you
can be the master over the time that
is your life? Would you worry about
anything? No. Would you be afraid of
anything in life or in death? Never.
Before you can have mastery
over time, you must first know how
to bend it, slow it down, and speed it
up. Clarifying and declaring intent is
the first step on any path, and must be
activated to allow change in frequency
to occur. When you are clear that you
want to have mastery over the time
that you have in your day and in your
life, you can practice bending it by
making requests directly into the field.
You think you cannot do this, or that
if you could, it would be cheating, or
going against God’s will. Until you are
ready to accept that you are God, God
is you, and all is One, you will not give
yourself permission to be transcendent
of the physical laws. Without permission, you will not enter the state of
consciousness that gives you the power
to have mastery over time.
Mastery of time is not complicated, and you already bend time, not
knowing how you are doing this, as
an effect of every emotion you have.
There is a personal map for you, and
it comes with personal guides, who
are forever the whole of you that lives
in timeless light, and is the source
of all time and matter. All you need
do is work your way towards this by
continually intending it. What you are
working towards does not exist in the
future and cannot be found by seeking
it. You will not find this destination
through a book, or lecture, affirmation,
or prayer, all of which help set the
direction of vibratory shift when your
resistance to go directly is too great.
A good way to bend time is using your mind to slow down. Start
with your breath, breathe slowly and
intentionally, inhale the raging waves
of mindless chatter, embrace this in
your being until you see your own
thoughts, exhale until there is no longer
an attachment. See your life as a slow
motion dance, which you experience
with all your senses and your heart
wide open. You need never be afraid
of getting lost or separated from the
physical world as long as you are
holding the intent to know your source
directly. Let time stand still for you,
and through this stillness you can make
your life, and your physical body any
way you want it to be. You can choose
your journey here, have all your questions answered about life, death, and
God, and you can decide when you
want to release this life.
When you have bent time as far
as it can go you will find yourself in
perfect alignment with your own soul,
and you will find yourself here in the
perfect instant. From here, the point
from which all souls vibrate from
source, you have a perspective that will
hold you in a state of unending bliss
for eternity, for now you are the channel that God flows through directly,
giving form to your every thought as
you think it.
Since this is what you have come
here to do, you might as well begin
now.
You will find this Perfect Presence when the perception you have
of time and how it moves for you,
meets its own source. The only way,
without exception, that you will find
your source is to take the exact path to
it that you took away. The instant you
have one degree of separation, you are
off your course, lost on a detour, only
to find your self back on the same place
on your path that you were when you
left. It cannot be any other way. God’s
law is final. Time to go home.

NSTEAD OF MAKING traditional
resolutions this year – loose weight,
save money, change jobs – shed light
on your life and make the big changes
instead by shifting the life patterns and
cyclical themes that hold you back.
Most recurring problems stem from
past wounds and core beliefs. These
organize into life themes that repeat over
and over regardless of time, place or people involved. They are the tapes that run
in your head and that you repeatedly think
and believe about yourself, others and the
world.
Just as a cell has many receptor sites
that dock substances such as hormones, so
your being has energetic ‘receptor sites’
that resonate with your limiting core
beliefs and life themes. These then attract
similar events, relationships and circumstances in your life, creating a disconnection between what you want and what
actually happens.
For example, you may desire wellness, but since you hold a hidden core
belief that you have to work really hard to
get what you want, the result is adrenal
exhaustion instead. Or you might desire an
intimate relationship, but your subconscious cyclical pattern of abandonment
causes you to be defensive and protective,
pushing away potential partners instead of
attracting them. These are the issues upon
which to shed your light this New Year.
The first step to identify your patterns
is to zoom in on what isn’t working in your
life. The universe is always mirroring back
to you the condition of your love, will,
intent and vision, so what is the world mirroring back to you? What happens to you
over and over? What core beliefs limit
your desires? What pain in your past
repeatedly holds you back? Where do you
feel stuck in your life?
Once you discover a limiting belief or
cyclical theme, honor it – acknowledge it
and see it for what it is – for only then can
you receive its teachings, message, wisdom
and gifts. Honoring means, "I see you. I
hear you. I receive you." There are many
ways to honor – altars, journal writing and
direct dialogue are just a few. Do at least
one of these, for an issue might not resolve
until it has been honored for a while.
This is because honoring is like
weeding a garden: just plucking the leaves
LIGHT LIFE
on
your
and stem doesn’t remove the weed; until its
root is dug up, the plant will grow again.
As so many of your core beliefs and life
themes are held in your subconscious, you
may have to dig deep.
To dig out the root, ask yourself questions such as: How does this issue make
me feel? Have I ever experienced a similar
relationship, health issue, or situation like
this in my life before? When? Who was
involved? When did it start? Keep going
back over your life, identifying more repetitive situations when you felt that way.
What have I learned from it since? How
has it served me? What are its messages
and/or teachings? When you know all of
these answers, ask a last one – am I really
ready to be finished with this pattern?
Perhaps it "buys" you something – gives
you security or keeps you from having to
change. If so, alter this decision so you can
release the core belief or cyclical pattern
that is holding you back.
Once the honoring feels complete,
unleash the pattern through ritual or ceremony. There are endless possibilities here,
but one of the simplest and most timehonored is a fire ceremony. To do this,
create sacred space, light a candle or fire
and focus on what you want to let go.
Thank the issue for its gifts and teachings,
then blow it into an object three times –
this can be a stick, the pattern/belief written on a slip of paper, or an item representing the pattern or belief. Then burn
the object, letting the fire fully consume it
to ash.
The last and most important step is to
invoke what you do want. Outline it in
detail and focus solely on the new desire to
help it birth. Afterwards, if a challenging
situation arises that reminds you of the old
pattern or belief, keep tuned to the new
desire instead and do more honoring and/or
perform more ritual and ceremony as needed. In time, the new pattern will establish
and your life will "miraculously" change.

“W
elcoming the Waves of Light" is our Theme for the New Year. There are so
many aspects, so many possibilities when speaking of ‘the light’. We begin with
Lesley Tierra helping us shed ‘light’ on our lives and make big changes by shifting
life patterns and cyclical themes that hold us back.
Next, we find out that the human body literally glows, emitting visible light.
So what’s the big deal with the bulbs that are compact fluorescent lamps or ‘CFL’, the curly-cue
type that are rapidly replacing the old standard incandescent bulbs? You’ll find out, AND . . . it is a
‘big deal’! Alternatives? Information about LED Lights and the importance of Full-Spectrum Lighting
answer the question.
Our Theme, initially about one’s own personal growth, then a physical science aspect of our
body’s own ‘light’, pragmatic—relating about the CFL lights, LED lights, the importance of FullSpectrum Lighting and the light of the sun and our health. Culminating with The Vista Eye Center’s
special event, an Expo related to vision . . . and, vision is definitely related to ‘the light’.
The Theme also features The Light Party whose ‘enlightened’ and most pertinent/meaningful platform is "Health, Peace & Freedom for All"—a concept whose time has more than come. Let’s go for it!
We hope this Theme has ‘enlightened us’ in regards to our own personal growth as well as education in best practices for literally ‘lighting up our lives’.
Happy New Year!

R
ECENTLY, A HOUSEHOLDER in
Maine broke a light bulb. It happens
all the time. A call was placed to the
Department of Environmental Protection to
ask how to dispose of it, and the homeowner
was referred to a decontaminator. Why?
The bulb happened to be a compact fluorescent lamp or ‘CFL’, the curly-cue type that
are rapidly replacing the old standard incandescent bulbs. So what’s the big deal?
CFL’s are highly energy efficient. They
have been embraced by many ‘greenies’ because
they use about a quarter of the power of equivalent incandescent bulbs, furthermore, their lifespan is about 8 to 15 times longer, lasting anywhere from 6000 to 15,000 hours compared to
about 1000 hours for incandescents.
Many jurisdictions are in the process of
restricting or banning the production and sale of
incandescent bulbs since they do not meet with
new energy efficiency standards. The European
Union began phasing them out in 2009 and the
U.S.A. and Canada are following suit with legislation that will effectively ban their use by as
early as 2012. Currently, about a quarter of the
light bulbs purchased in the U.S. are CFL’s.
The problem is that CFL’s contain mercury
and mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can damage brain and kidney tissue. Over the past 10
years, hundreds of Chinese workers in CFL factories have been poisoned and hospitalized because
of mercury exposure. Industry spokesmen are
quick to point out that the average CFL contains
only about 5 milligrams of mercury, much less
than the old mercury-filled thermometers and
thermostats which are currently being banned or
CFL’s – The Dark Light?
phased out. They also tell us that where electricity is generated in coal-fired power plants which
emit greenhouse gases, mercury and other pollutants into the atmosphere, CFL use actually
reduces overall amounts of mercury emission due
to their energy savings.
What they fail to point out is that a staggering three quarters of all used CFL’s, an estimated 100 million annually, are currently winding up in landfill sites where they are likely to
shatter and release their mercury into the soil
and water thereby putting workers and local residents at risk.
California and a handful of other States
now have laws in place that require the recycling of CFL’s and other ‘universal waste’ products, but evidently people are failing to take
heed. Why?
First of all, there is a pitiful lack of education about the bulbs. Fewer Americans have
any knowledge about CFL’s than the estimated
34% who believe in UFO’s.
Secondly, there are still few options for
recycling. Project Porchlight and Earth 911
have websites that list recycling locations
throughout the country but they often require
travelling some distance. (In the Santa Cruz
area, used CFL’s can be returned to any Home
Depot or Lowes store.)
Thirdly, cleaning up a broken CFL bulb
requires everything short of donning a moon
suit. Here are the instructions that are typically
given on any agency website:

DO NOT use a vacuum or a broom to
clean up the debris because they will spread the

Use sticky duct tape to pick up any
remaining fragments.
Wipe down any hard surfaces with damp
paper towels which should also be placed in the
plastic bag or glass jar.
Return the debris in its container to a recycling depot.
Is it any wonder why most of this stuff
ends up in landfills?
And mercury is not the only problem with
CFL’s. There are many reports of skin rashes
and headaches associated with them, phenomena currently under investigation. CFL’s emit
ultra-violet (UV) light and can cause skin rashes
under certain conditions. British researchers
have suggested that the bulbs should not be used
within 30 cm (one foot) of exposed skin.
Headaches are likely associated with the ‘flicker
factor’, a problem seen particularly in older
model CFL’s.
The color of light emitted by CFL’s is another
factor to consider before purchasing them. Many
have complained that CFL’s make them look like
zombies. To understand why requires a little
knowledge about color temperature. Color temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin ( degrees
above absolute zero). Lower color temperatures
are warm and soft colors ranging from pinkish to
yellowish. Higher color temperatures actually produce cooler colors ranging from pure white to blue.
Candlelight is about 1700K, incandescent about
2700K, and sunlight is about 5800K. If you do
buy CFL’s, choose ones in the range of 2700 to
3000K. New Energy Star standards require that
color temperature be printed on the box.
So what are the alternatives to CFL’s?
General Electric Corporation and Philips are in the
process of developing and marketing high-efficiency incandescent bulbs which they claim will rival
CFL’s in terms of energy efficiency and without
the mercury. But perhaps the most promising
alternative is the Light Emitting Diode (LED).
LED’s are light-emitting semi-conductors that until
recently, were found mostly in products like
Christmas lights, flashlights, and automotive lights.
Lately, they have been imbedded into light bulbs,
flood lights, spot lights, and many other products.
An 8-watt LED bulb will replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb requiring only a small fraction of the
electricity. Moreover, they offer an extraordinary
lifespan of around 30,000 hours. Because they
appear to be expensive (averaging about $25 per
bulb), many suppliers will not stock them, believing that they won’t sell. Given the energy savings
and the fact that an incandescent bulb would need
to be replaced a couple of dozen times to cover the
lifespan of an LED, they are actually cost-effective. Over time, the price of LED’s is likely to
come down and they could replace CFL’s as the
favored alternative to incandescents.
In the meantime, you might want to consider
buying halogen bulbs and other high-efficiency
incandescent bulbs as they become available.
Although they burn hotter, halogens are more efficient than standard incandescent and they last
longer. For me, however, I’ll bet my money on
LED’s. They are expensive but they will last for
years and use very little electricity.

ITH ALL THE hype about LED
lights, it is normal for a person to
wonder exactly what they are and
how they work. In fact, many people who are
already using them to conserve energy still
have no idea how they function or why they
save energy. What are LED lights? In short,
LED lights are Light Emitting Diodes that can
be seen in place of incandescent bulbs or used
as a backlight for digital displays on watches
and microwave ovens. LED lights are an energy efficient source of light that is durable, long
lasting and environmentally friendly.
LED Light Technology

LED Lights and Energy
One of the main aspects of LED light
technology has been so diligently researched is
in the area of conservation of energy. It was
discovered early on that LED lights use far less
current to operate. This is true in both battery
operated LED devices as well as in electricity
driven devices. Today, with the state of the economy and the devastation already done to the
Page 18

LED lights, also known as Light Emitting
Diodes, are semiconductor light sources that
are used as gauge lamps (digital displays) in
several different forms of electronics. Today
LED lights are being used for more common
applications such as the lighting in a home, or
internal and external lights throughout a vehicle. The very first LED lights used a low output to create a dim red color. With advances in
modern LED technology, these lights are available in a rainbow of colors with extremely
bright illumination capabilities and endless
possibilities in terms of lighting.

The Body & Light
The human body literally
glows, emitting a visible light in
extremely small quantities at levels that rise and fall with the day.
Past research has shown that
the body emits visible light,
1,000 times less intense than the
levels which can be seen with the
naked eye. In fact, virtually all
living creatures emit very weak
light.
To learn more about this
faint visible light, scientists in
Japan employed extraordinarily
sensitive cameras capable of
detecting single photons. Five
healthy male volunteers in their
20’s were placed bare-chested in
front of the cameras in complete
darkness in light-tight rooms for
20 minutes every three hours.
The researchers found the
body glow rose and fell over the
day, with its lowest point at 10am
and its peak at 4pm, dropping
gradually after that. These findings suggest there is light emission linked to the body clock,
most likely due to how metabolic
rhythms fluctuate over the course
of the day.
Faces glowed more than the
rest of the body. This might be
because faces are more tanned
than the rest of the body, since
they get more exposure to sunlight.

always had a major drawback in
terms of safety, and that is heat.
They get extremely hot and have
led to a number of different hazards including burn injuries and
fires. It may be hard to understand

Vista Center is the only nonprofit agency in Santa Cruz County
dedicated to serving the special
needs of people who are blind or
could lead to something as serious
as a burn or fire, however this is a
common occurrence when the use
of incandescent bulbs are in place.
A piece of paper or other flammable material could easily come in
close contact to a hot bulb, which
could just as easily cause a fire to
ignite.
With a better
understanding of
LED lights and what
it is that sets them
apart from other
lighting sources, a
person can make a
more educated decision as to whether or
not these lights would
be a good alternative
for his/her lighting
needs. What are LED
lights? They are a
safer, more energy
efficient and far less
costly source of light
for anything from
appliances to indoor
and outdoor lighting. LED lights
are the longest lasting artificial
lights ever invented and are the
safest in terms of the ecology.
What are LED lights? They are the
right choice all the way around.
Are you interested in how
light emitting diodes work? It is a
question that has been around for
years. Ever since 1907 when light
emitting diodes were discovered,
people have been driven to understand, control and create with
LEDs. Over the decades LED technology has advanced to where light
emitting diodes are used in thousands of devices and electrical sys-
tems that we use each and every
day.
While the words Light
Emitting Diode sound quite technical, you may be more familiar with
the term LED and you may be surprised to find that you use light
emitting diodes in your everyday
life. LED lights are
run at a low temperature, use less energy
and last longer than
traditional filament or
fluorescent light
bulbs. As the world
advances and continues to seek green living alternatives to
help save energy and
the planet, more and
more devices and systems are going to be
integrating LED lighting wherever possible.
The small size and
flexibility of light
emitting diodes makes
them an ideal choice for many
electronics applications, as well as
the many new and sometimes
unusual uses of LED light.
While you are enjoying all the
convenience of lighted electronics
devices take a few moments to think
about what your life would be like
without this technology. No cell
phone with games or text, no laptop,
no iPod, all of these things rely on
LEDs for the light and display that
you enjoy the convenience of in
your everyday life.

changed your world?
Wild places define us. They
define our national character. They
are a precious legacy we leave our
children and future generations of
Americans.
Maybe your love affair with the
wild was a "no name" place -- perhaps a peaceful hollow, a certain rock
along a crystal lakeshore, or a mountain peak that allows a glimpse into
infinity. If your place is a no name
place then chances are it’s unprotected.
Now, imagine a man-made disaster destroying that place you treasure. As we saw in the aftermath of
the historic Gulf Oil Disaster of
2010, "Oops" doesn’t undo the damage. Our mission is to save our
wilderness, your place, forever.
We pledge to you that we’re
redoubling our efforts in 2011 to
achieve the kind of victories for
wilderness you’ve come to expect
from The Wilderness Society in our
75 years of working to protect wild
places.
But, we’re really going to need
your support and direct involvement
to weather the challenges and maximize the opportunities of the next
year. Your online actions and your
help on the ground make us succeed.
The letters you write. The friends and
neighbors you talk to or you take to
your special place...these actions will
be what helps us triumph in our
shared mission.
And as a member organization,
our success will rise or fall based on
your financial support to protect our
climate, ensure clean drinking water,
and support real solutions for our
energy crisis that don’t sacrifice our
natural treasures.
Our country and our world are
in this together. Your year-end tax
deductible gift can help save the
places we love. So please give today.

Spring renewal, Facial
Toning allows you to

season, looking refreshed and revitalized.
In response to continued inquiry, this article
is being reprinted for those interested
in wholistic skin care alternatives.
Facial Toning is a non-invasive

the muscles of the neck and face
are gently stimulated by low-level
micro-current to provide one with

California, in a truly
Orwellian twist, government agencies are
exempt from laws
prohibiting false advertising.
Should we hold
our advertisers, even
if they are government agencies, accountable to reality?
Should we require
that what they tell
us have some resemblance to the truth?
This month,
PETA has erected billboards throughout the state that read, “California Cheese Comes
From Miserable
Cows.” PETA, of
course, is an animal rights group,
but this issue is
increasingly being
recognized as one
that concerns not
only vegetarians
and animal advocates. Consumers
who want the animal products they
buy to be from humanely raised animals can be found
in every segment of
society.
Consideration
for the plight of
animals is a central
part of the American character. It
is an essential part
of who we are as a
a healthier and
tighter skin.
In addition
to one’s heartbeat, skin and
muscle tone is
related to the
body’s electrical system. The
skin’s ability
to maintain its
tone and elasticity is governed
by chemical reactions within and between the cells
of the skin. These reactions are triggered by electrical impulses. As the
body ages, these reactions slow down
and the skin loses its suppleness. As
the skin ages, the ability to regenerate new tissue slows and the skin’s
people. The “happy
cow” ads are an insult to the legitimate
humanitarian concerns of millions of
people. As consumers, do we want to
reward this sort of
behavior with our
hard-earned dollars?
John Robbins
is the author of the
just released tenth
anniversary edition
of The Food Revolution: How Your Diet
Can Help Save Your Life And Our
World. He is also the author of many
natural moisturizing ability begins to
fail; underlying muscles (the skin’s
platform) slacken and lose their tone,
resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin.
Facial Toning machines stimulate the
cells in the skin and muscles with low
level electrical impulses (micro-current). Micro amp current more closely
approximates the naturally occurring
bioelectric current in the body. As
the cells are stimulated, cell function
is balanced to optimal levels. The
micro-current has a positive effect on
increasing cell permeability, thereby
enhancing absorption of nutrients and
elimination of waste. As circulation is
increased, dormant cells regenerate
and moisture infiltrates drying skin
layers.
Micro-current’s safe and low
level electrical impulses can also
“reprogram” the muscles to assume
nearly original shape to support the
skin tissue. Muscle tone is achieved
by increased circulation and the
electrically stimulated muscle being
tightened or relaxed. Noted skin care
authority Zia Westley Hosford, in her
book FACE VALUE, describes the
process as follows: “Kinesiologists
have demonstrated that any muscle
can be programmed to accept or release its tone. The face has over thirty
other best-sellers, including the classic Diet For A New America, and

muscles that lie directly below and are
connected to the skin’s surface. When
muscles are stimulated they contract
or expand. In either case, proper
firmness is reestablished through the
nonsurgical procedure, correcting the
sag of the skin. The treatment also
stimulates blood circulation, which
helps to improve muscle and counteract dryness.”
Ideally a series of Toning treatments (10-12) is recommended depending on an individual’s age,
original skin tone and life-style, with
occasional maintenance treatments
to retain tone. The cost of a course of
treatments varies from $600-$800,
about $50-$75 a treatment. Although
it sounds expensive, it is nearly a
quarter the cost of plastic surgery, and
there is no loss of time for recovery.
In fact, many clients rave that it is a
stress reduction treatment also! As a
natural alternative, this skin revitalization program enables one to enjoy a
healthier more youthful appearance.

hile well done with great action and
magic sequences, as well as building
even more substance into the lead characters, this installment in the series has gotten
so gloomy that it has lost most of the early
charm and whimsy—and will probably lose
much of the younger audience. Sure, the
symbolism may be about grappling with the
“dark” forces within and without, the perils of
passing from childhood into adulthood, and
supposedly reflects the increasing darkness
and maturity of the books… but honestly,
enough with Lord Voldemort’s ugly face, and
his minions’ terrifying meanness. Some of the
scenes do drag on, but there is still possible
enjoyment for those of you who wish to better
understand these realms—plus, the stunning
and stark English countryside, the relationships of Potter and his friends, and amazing
visual effects are all a lot of fun. If you are a
fan of the series, you will likely have a grand
time (2 hrs 30 min).

Concerts in Retro:
My reviews of shows I saw last month.
Remember this is only my opinion.
At The Catalyst: The Expendables,
singer/guitarist, Geoff Weers and singer/
drummer, Adam Patterson, harmonize
together for many of the songs creating a
unique sound. They do sound a little like
311, but not as laid back. These Santa Cruz
locals play an eclectic mix of surf rock, ska,
reggae and punk rock. I only saw Saturday
night’s show, but found out they sold out
both nights.
Los Lobos, consistently great but
evolving over the 35 plus years they have
been playing together, Los Lobos has a lot
of material to choose from, going from low
key easy rock to a fast bluesy honky-tonk to
upbeat Latin, and it’s all entertaining. They
are very accomplished at every style they
choose. And they’re so cool, they are letting
people download the music from the Dec.
17th Catalyst show at the Los Lobos website. Get your downloads while they last:
http://www.loslobos.org/2010-giveaway/.
At Seabright Brewery: The Bonedrivers, a powerhouse rock-n-blues trio
featuring the explosive guitar work and
vocalizing of Keith Karloff. They play blues,
rock, southern rock with a lil’ country.
At The Crow’s Nest: Martini Unplugged is Billy Martini on stand up drums
and percussion, with guitarist, Steve Allison, performing as a duo that create a
lot more music than one would think. They
play fast, happy, make you want to get up
and dance, 70’s rock cover songs. They
did blow away the crowd with one original
composition too.
At Twin Lakes Church: I was invited
by my wonderful friends, Pamela & Bill, to
join them for the church’s annual Christmas
Concert, and was I glad I accepted. It was
a thrilling, spectacular production. Flawless
exuberant performances of old standards
and some with a twist, like “We Three Kings”
were five men singing accompanied by four
percussionists. Thousands of people attended across ten performances. Next year,
don’t miss out. Take the whole family.

George VI (the current Queen of England’s father), and Geoffrey Rush as an unconventional
speech coach, carry this well executed drama,
based on the true story of the monarch’s rise
to power and quest to overcome a lifelong
speech impediment. Helena Bonham Carter
is also elegant and regal, yielding a subtle
power, as George’s wife, Elizabeth. The dynamic tension and developing bond between

us an experience far more compelling than it

Why would a seemingly intelligent, attractive

we care? While there are a few good laughs,

hile we are not great fans of the series,
it does have the virtue of this time
avoiding over-the-top violence—quite an
accomplishment in films these days. There
are all the potential ingredients for a magical
adventure, but the result is rather lackluster
and uninspiring. It is devoid of the gripping
passion or charismatic characters found in
more successful fantasy movies. We found
it hard to connect with any of the characters,
some of them—especially Will Poulter as
cousin Eustace Scrubb—outright annoying
in all the wrong ways. However, if you love
this genre, and have a yen for talking lions,
you’ll probably find enough here to prolong

f beauty is your objective, you will find it
here—with Angelina Jolie’s jaw-dropping
classical gorgeousness, one outfit more
fabulous than the next (she looks so together
all the time, even in wind and rain and high
stakes), as well as the ageless charm of
romantic Venice. Johnny Depp is never too
hard on the eyes either. His performance is
actually remarkable; who would have thought
the eccentric actor could portray an ordinary
stumbling bloke—up to his neck in somebody
else’s troubles—quite so convincingly! Jolie’s
role doesn’t give the remarkable performer
much to work with besides smoldering sex
appeal, but she does that part pretty well.
Plots are pivotal in this tense-but-somewhat
breezy entertainment. Not the most amazing
film you’ll ever see, but enough eye candy,
understated humor and a stellar cast for an
enjoyable evening romp (1 hr 43 min).

M
Y SENSEI USED to say
that as martial artists we
should strive to become
“Artists of life.” When I was young
the physical lessons of punching,
kicking, striking, throwing and grappling dominated my interest. I wanted to know every possible technique
and every possible way to generate
more speed and power. Now, after 47
years of training I find myself
emphasizing to my students the
importance of developing one’s character, of becoming an artist of life.
Throughout the years O’Sensei
would interweave within our incessant physical training lessons that
would help us develop living skills.
One that I would like to share with
you today is the lesson of “Letting
Go.” When teaching this lesson
O’Sensei would often tell us this
story:
Two monks were sent on a long
journey. On the second night it rained
heavily so they took refuge in a temple. Early the next morning they set
out and shortly came upon an attractive young woman standing in the
middle of the road. The woman carried a parasol and was dressed in a
beautiful kimono with fine sandals.
She stood looking at a large mud
puddle that blocked her path. There
was no way around. When the two
monks walked up one greeted her
politely and said, “It’s obvious that
we all must cross this puddle and
since I am sure to get muddy anyway
there is no need for you to soil your
fine clothes. I would be glad to carry
you across if you would like.” The
young woman was very grateful and
agreed to accept the monk’s kind
offer. The monk scooped her up in
his arms, carried her across the puddle and set her down. The two bowed
politely and all went on their way.
The second monk was strangely
quiet all day. Late that evening he
suddenly broke the silence, “I’m
very disappointed in you!” he said to
the other monk. “We are monks and
we have taken certain vows. You
should not have carried that young
woman across the water this morning. The only reason you did is so
you could touch her body! You have
broken your vows and should be
ashamed of yourself!” “No,” the
other monk said quietly, “I carried
the woman across the water and set
her down on the other side. You are
the one who has been carrying her all
day.”
As humans we are certain to
experience anger and other negative
emotions in our lifetime. There will
be times
when we
become
angry, we
become
sad, our
feelings
will
be
hurt and
so on. If
allowed
to, these negative emotions can
become very harmful to our health.
When negative emotions come we
must practice “Letting go.” It is our
choice. We can experience them and
then let them go and move on
through life or cling to them as the
second monk did. If we hold on or
cling to them they will only cause us
grief. The poisons, as O’Sensei
taught were; anger, jealousy, hatred,
greed, resentment, desire, envy and
deceit.
Sensei Rod Sanford was one of
Professor Richard Kim’s senior students. O’Sensei Kim was referred to
as, “Karate’s Guiding Light.” He
was a 10th dan and in Japan known
as a busei, martial arts saint. Sensei
Sanford now carries on for O’Sensei
Kim as president of the Zen Bei
Butoku-Kai and one of the technical
directors for Kokusai Butokukai.

ASTROLOGY
FOR
(On February 12, Saturday eve
at 7pm, join Susan as she speaks
about 2011 at the Center for Transformative Visions for Healing and Creativity, 819 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz)
I
n 2011, inspirational visions become
the foundations for a new age. 2010
was a crucial turning point year. The
way we connect with each other and to
institutions is rapidly transforming at an
extraordinary pace. Our awareness shifts
to the power we have to collaborate
based on the information we are sharing
instantaneously. This leads to a decentralizing of long held worldwide power.
In this gap between the old and the new,
find time to pull away from consumerism,
from survival worries and to-do lists.
Cultivate stillness, and open to the gifts
of inspiration and guidance. (On January
4th, Uranus conjuncts Jupiter, with the
solar eclipse.)
This remaining year before 2012,
we are being thrown into a heightened
awareness. 2012 is a call to us to gather
around a point of collective transformation, focusing our consciousness together. Don’t linger in fear of change as the
Saturn Pluto square brings contractions
to our way of life. It is the labor pains
of this new world. Jupiter and Uranus,
entering Aries, produces openness and
innovation, while the Saturn Pluto alignment demands efficiency, transformed
values, to dream a new dream for our
world.
The dynamic Uranus Pluto
square, until 2016, brings more demonstrations, revolutions, breakdowns
and breakthroughs. Pluto in Capricorn
has been reshaping government, the
economy, diplomatic relations, and our
relationship to sustainability. We are
quickened with fresh energy. Politically,
the struggle will continue between progressive and conservative, challenging
the two party system as more people
become involved. We are able to break
out of roles that have dictated our behavior with each other. The hidden workings
of governments and religion will continue
to be exposed. While the systems at the
top are crumbling, the people in their
communities are creating new kinds of
interactions. There is a transformation
in consumerism, causing a ripple in the
retail markets all over the world. Instead
of an economy based on endless growth,
what is developing is an economy based
on quality and renewable resources.
Neptune moves into Pisces,
JANUARY 2011
on March 20 (last there in 1874-61).
This emphasizes our concern with the
oceans, music, the arts, spirituality,
imagination, and meditation. Situations
will arise that call forth compassion.
Those that have passed over, the angelic realms, and other life forms in our
universe will be more easily accessible
as the boundaries between the worlds
become more transparent. Religion and
spiritual devotion will increase. The arts,
music, and sound, and their role in healing will be accentuated. Development in
photography and film will increase our
awareness. Prison and hospital reform
will be up for us.
Mercury retrogrades through the
fire signs three times during this year.
We are offered the opportunity to invite
in and listen to our intuition. This anchors
meaningfulness, purpose, and creativity
to form the future. We become more
transparent, spontaneous, open hearted.
Honor the Mercury retrograde periods by
retreating and reflecting. Taking the time
to do this can alter your future direction
in positive ways.
Jupiter enters Taurus midyear,
supporting how we commune and come
to understand the fragility, intelligence
and holy powers of the Earth.
Twelve opportunities for 2011:
Aries (Mar 20-Apr 19): Begin 2011 with
reflection and quiet. Allow yourself the
time to feel into what you want because
in January, you have energy and inspiration to begin. Pause during the Mercury
retrograde periods to reassess. It’s an
exciting year of new interests and interactions. You serve as an inspiration and
teacher to others. Much learning takes
place in relationship, and your attention
to it will benefit it greatly.
Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): This year
you have the opportunity to shed old
identities as you bring situations to
completions and enter new beginnings.
The connections you have made and
nurtured during 2010 will deepen and be
a support to new opportunities coming in
the 2nd half of the year. Following May,
more love and enjoyment enters your life.
The power to dream and envision with
others is favored. This is a time to acquire
and refine new skills. As you more deeply
digest your life experiences, you prepare
expanding horizons in 2012.
Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): The areas
of life-purpose, goals, and career, find
more support, and are stimulated with
new energy and ideas. You connect with
CHARL-C RIDING THE CLOUDS

Charl-C, a very bright spirit, made
his transition on the morning of
December 14, 2010. His mom Pattie
wrote this:
“For that evening, I had set up a
small gathering with 6 of his Aunties and
Uncles in our building and neighbourhood to join me, gathering around my
dear boy to bless and love him overtly as
he was alive here physically, just resting
a lot—However, that morning my beloved
boy passed on to his new life. We kept
him in his sweet bed and continued with
our evening Tribute to dear, blessed
Charl-C. He was there; and it was lovely.
We had a slide show with many of the
things that he did including the ‘Westie
Walk’ (a hoot-and-a-half), with 50 to
75 West Highland Terriers gathered
together in Light House Point near the
edge of English Bay and Georgia Strait.
There are races, slaloms, other contests,
etc. Of course, Charlie was a participator
(our family motto: “stay awake, participate”). And, his outlook on the races for
several years had been the following: “5
doggies lined up to go after the sound
goes off; sound goes off; all Westies take
off; run like heck after a toy rabbit; one
‘Charl-C’ takes off... well, for about 3 feet;
stops and looks around; turns around
the starting line (with
a look and energy
about him saying,
‘the heck with this,
I’m not running down
there for no apparent
good reason, I’ll just
go back and wait.’
Kind of a ‘me won’t
attitude’...”)”
Sounds like
a wise elder dog to
me; why waste energy on non-essentials? Our pets are
teachers; they are
all about our learning
to love unconditionally. Charl-C touched
everyone’s heart he met; he was/is
a truly inspirational angel. He will be
remembered and missed for the joyful
love connection he brought.
As you enter the New Year, imagine how you might be remembered when
you transition to your next life expression.
Can you see in your mind’s eye the gathering of loved ones who will both mourn
your passing and celebrate your life with
memories of you each holds dear? What
impression do you wish to leave behind?
Are you fulfilling your dream?
new groups of people
and are inspired by
the interactions. This
is the year to believe
in yourself, and trust
that your uniqueness
is like no other’s. Your
creative work takes on more authentic
expression. You find yourself immersed
in change from within. In the 2nd half of
the year, you connect with others more
intimately. This prepares you for 2012,
where love grows and opportunities open
doors for you.
Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 21): A new direction
in your life begins to take off in 2011.
Follow what is inspirational, creative and
new. This year calls for a careful balance
between responsibilities to home and
family, changes in relationship, and pursuing your life in new ways. Boundaries
in relationships need to be in place as
situations provide opportunities to focus
in new areas. In the 2nd half of the year,
you find enjoyment and pleasure with the
people in your life.
Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 22): This year, travel,
pursuing higher education, teaching,
publishing and acting are all favored. Be
open to the new and unexpected entering
your life. Under the Jupiterian light, you
have more fun, and people enjoy you. In
the 2nd half of the year, you can expand
what you do in the world or give form to
your aspirations. This supports change
in your daily routines.
Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): During 2011,
support comes to you from others,
though you may also find your support
to others is more richly rewarding. You
probe the mysteries of life. Intimacy with
others increases and is rewarding in unexpected ways. You receive inheritance
or financial support from others. In the
2nd half of the year, you are inspired and
enter a phase of change that is very
fulfilling.
Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): While you have
experienced changes to your family, and
your home, this year moves in a new
direction. New people enter your life. You
have an opportunity to share in different
ways. People respond well to you, and
you feel enthusiasm for what you can do
together. All of this is balanced with how
you take time for yourself. You are able
to give more quality time to the one you
love. After May, finances benefit.
Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): You have
been involved in an important transition. Completions and new beginnings
take place. You are changing your daily
routines and work patterns. Be flexible
and open to possibilities. Create a space
in your life to spend time with what really
inspires you. In the later part of the year,
relationships become more rewarding
and harmonious. Love grows along with
enjoyment.
These questions
are often asked of ourselves at the passing of
one year into a new one,
when transiting from one
reality to another. This is
the energy of the North,
of winter and hibernation, a time for
self assessment, reflection and setting our
intentions for a better
life through New Year
resolutions.
Are you in need
of financial, emotional
and/or psychological
security? Envision it
done, trust, and act on
your vision. Do you
desire more love? Envision it done, and be
more loving. Accept your
blessings with gratitude
and attract the prosperity, love, health, enlightenment—the gift you
desire. You have the
opportunity to choose
what you put your attention on this year. What you think, you
manifest. Intend your authentic self; be
it and express it.
Like Charl-C, you can touch
hearts with your love and be an inspirational angel.

WHAT
IS
MEDICAL CANNABIS?
Editor’s Note: The following
article is excerpted from Wikipedia,
the free encyclopedia. There are pages
of references online, as well as links
to a plethora of articles and a wealth
of information, way more than can fit
on this page.
edical cannabis (also referred to as medical marijuana) is the use of cannabis
and its constituent cannabinoids such
as THC as a physician-recommended
form of medicine or herbal therapy.
The Cannabis plant from which the
cannabis drug is derived has a long history of medicinal use, with evidence
dating back to 2,737 BC.
Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis has been
disputed, and despite the opposition
to research and use put forward by
most national governments, it does
have several well-documented beneficial effects. Among these are: the
amelioration of nausea and vomiting,
stimulation of hunger in chemotherapy
and AIDS patients, lowered intraocular eye pressure (shown to be effective
for treating glaucoma), as well as gastrointestinal illness. Its effectiveness as
an analgesic has been suggested (and
disputed), as well.
There are several methods for
administration of dosage, including
vaporizing or smoking dried buds,
smoking, drinking, or eating extracts,
and taking capsules. The comparable
efficacy of these methods was the
subject of an investigative study
conducted by the National Institutes
of Health.
Synthetic cannabinoids are available as prescription drugs in some
countries. Examples include Marinol,
available in the United States and
Canada, and Cesamet, available in
Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom,
and also in the United States.
While cannabis for recreational
use is illegal in most parts of the
world, its use as a medicine is legal
in a number of territories, including
Canada, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Israel, Italy, Finland, and
M
Portugal. In the United States, federal
law outlaws all cannabis use, while
permission for medical cannabis varies
among states. Distribution is usually
done within a framework defined by
local laws. Medical cannabis remains
a controversial issue worldwide.
Clinical applications
In a 2002 review of medical literature, medical cannabis was shown
to have established effects in the treatment of nausea, vomiting, premenstrual syndrome, unintentional weight
loss, insomnia, and lack of appetite.
Other “relatively well-confirmed”
effects were in the treatment of “spasticity, painful conditions, especially
neurogenic pain, movement disorders,
asthma, [and] glaucoma”.
Preliminary findings indicate
that cannabis-based drugs could prove
useful in treating inflammatory bowel
disease, migraines, fibromyalgia, and
related conditions.
Medical cannabis has also been
found to relieve certain symptoms
of multiple sclerosis and spinal cord
injuries by exhibiting antispasmodic
and muscle-relaxant properties as well
as stimulating appetite.
Other studies have shown cannabis or cannabinoids may be useful
in treating alcohol abuse, amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, collagen-induced arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, bipolar
disorder, colorectal cancer, depression,
dystonia, epilepsy, digestive diseases,
gliomas, hepatitis C, Huntington’s
disease, leukemia, skin tumors, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
(MRSA), Parkinson’s disease, pruritus,
post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
sickle-cell disease, sleep apnea, and
anorexia nervosa. Controlled research
on treating Tourette syndrome with a
synthetic version of tetrahydrocannabinol (brand name Marinol), the
main psychoactive chemical found in
cannabis, showed the patients taking
Marinol had a beneficial response
without serious adverse effects; other
studies have shown that cannabis “has
no effects on tics and increases the individuals inner tension”. Case reports
found that marijuana helped reduce
tics, but validation of these results
requires longer, controlled studies on
larger samples.
Recent studies
Alzheimer’s disease: Research
done by the Scripps Research Institute
in California shows that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, prevents
the formation of deposits in the brain
associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
THC was found to prevent an enzyme
called acetylcholinesterase from accelerating the formation of “Alzheimer
plaques” in the brain more effectively
than commercially marketed drugs.
THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit
memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s
patients, as reported in Molecular
Pharmaceutics.
Lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: One of
the surprising research results from the
last decade has been the finding that
smoking cannabis does not increase
the risk of developing lung cancer or
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD) among people who do not
smoke tobacco, and may indeed confer
a mildly protective effect...
Breast cancer: According to a
2007 study at the California Pacific
Medical Center Research Institute,
cannabidiol (CBD) may stop breast
cancer from spreading throughout the
body. These researchers believe their
discovery may provide a non-toxic
alternative to chemotherapy while
achieving the same results minus the
painful and unpleasant side effects...
HIV/AIDS: Investigators at Columbia University published clinical
trial data in 2007 showing that HIV/
AIDS patients who inhaled cannabis
four times daily experienced substantial increases in food intake with little
evidence of discomfort and no impairment of cognitive performance. They
concluded that smoked marijuana has
a clear medical benefit in HIV-positive
patients...
