Saaremaa has retained its uniqueness due to its location and insulation. The territory of Saaremaa has been inhabited for about eight thousand years. In its history Saaremaa have had many different ancistors and governments: Insular-Western bishopric, Livonian Order, Danish and Swedish monarchies, Russian (Czarist) Empire, German occupation, Estonian free recpunlic and So- viet Unions´ occupation during 1940-1991. Because of its mild maritime climate and soil rich in lime, Besides Viidumae and Vilsandi Nature Reserves, there are over two hundred single nature objects under protection - parks, high cliffs, large trees, erratic boulders and unique marshy lowlands. The meteorite crater at Kaali is the biggest in Europe and easily approachable for visitors. Among the numerous sights of Saaremaa, several are worth calling special atten- tion to, e.g. Angla windmill hill, Mustjala cliff, bell tower built in the 17Ih century at Kihelkonna, manor house at Loona, ruins of Maasi castle of order, and Mihkli Farm Museum at Viki. The medieval churches of Saaremaa have remarkable archaic architecture. The most important tourist sight in the only town of the county, Kuressaare is the bishopric castle dating from the 13lh century. This castle is unique in the Baltic countries. Saaremaa has a rich flora, illustrated by the fact that 80% of the plant species found in Estonia are represented here. Altogether 1200 species of vascular plants can be found in Saaremaa. About 120 of the local plant species are rare ones which have received special protection status. The most famous endemic species is Rhinanthus osiliensis - a rare little flower growing mostly in spring fens. Orchids, rare and beautiful flowers are widespread: out of the 36 species found in Estonia, 35 of them are found on Saaremaa and neighbouring islands. Saaremaa has a wide variety of rare wildlife species - ranging from insects to seals. The smallest protected wildlife species include Cloude Apolle butterflies and Roman snails. The coastal areas of Saaremaa are famous seal habitats. The major mineral resources of Saaremaa County are dolomite, limestone, curative mud, peat and mineral water. Fish are the most important sea resource. Saaremaa has very good preconditions for developing a recreation industry. Forests, juniper groves, coastal areas, curative mud and the sea make up a vast recreation complex, the utilisation of which has only been started. The juniper groves covering about 9,000 ha are unique. The total resource of juniper timber and berries enables the development of a specific production for the medical, pharmaceutical, alcohol and foodstuffs industries. Another potential investment sector is the hunting industry. The number and diversity of species of game in our forests give good grounds for the development of hunting tourism to meet modern requirements.
