Since starting, I have had the opportunity to speak with staff, meet students
during assemblies and engage with members of the local community. I have
been struck by the very warm welcome that I have received and the positivity
from all members of the school community. I have also had the privilege of
attending the Music Festival at the Grand Hall and it is clear that we have some
very talented young people within the Learning Community.
I would like to take this opportunity to recognise all of the great work
that Mr Rose has accomplished, supported by all of the staff and parents, in
improving educational outcomes across the school. I very much plan to harness
this momentum in raising standards further.
My underlying philosophy as a Head Teacher is to provide opportunities for all
members of the school to achieve their very best. This can only be achieved if
the school, students and home work in partnership to secure the very best
educational experiences for our young people. With this in mind one of my
priorities will be to engage constructively with parents and carers. I will be
working with colleagues to provide as many opportunities as possible for
parents to engage in the school improvement process, the curriculum and in
celebrating student achievement.
As we move forward as a school community our priorities over the next 3 years
will be Raising Attainment, Wider Achievement, Developing Skills for Life
Learning & Work and Life Long Learning. These will provide us with an
opportunity to review the curriculum and ensure that we are delivering the
highest standards in all aspects.
I look forward to working with staff, pupils, parents and the wider community
over the coming years.
Best Wishes
Katy Hegarty
Head Teacher
End of Session
The school will close on Friday 26th June at 1.00 pm. Buses will be available at
this time.
Queen’s Garden Party
Mrs Myles has been honoured for her contribution to the school over the last 31 years and has
been invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Holyrood Palace in July. I am sure she will enjoy
shopping for her hat! She has also been asked to present the certificates at our S1/2 Celebration of
Success ceremony in June.
We are all extremely proud and very grateful for her continued contribution to the running of the school.
School Dux
Congratulations to Ruaridh Kerr S5 as Stewarton Academy’s 2015 Dux .
Interact Club
At the end of the 1st year of S3 Stewarton Academy pupils volunteering to be part of the
Rotary Interact Club, the class of 20 pupils has accumulated over 650 hours of volunteering.
This has been on projects at local residential homes, local primary schools, in the local
community parks and within the school.
Pupils have helped others by giving their time, and also helped others by raising money for
charities.

Ski Club
The school ski club organised two European trips last winter. Thirty four pupils from S2 to S4 were included in
the January trip to Pila in Italy. A great time was had by all, both in ski school and the après ski activities.
Six senior students took part in the April trip to Courmayeur in Italy. With some excellent late snow conditions
all students improved on their techniques.
Some of our pupils have reached a very high standard and three of our pupils have been selected, by Interski, to
participate in the Interski Scholarship Selection Day in Manchester on the 3 rd of July. They are Calum Sharp,
Ryan Miller and Andrew Partridge. This is a great achievement and we wish them all the best. I would also like
to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, pupils and staff who have supported the Ski Club. There have
been so many good trips and fantastic memories over the past 26 years.

ROKPA
Fundraising for this charity was undertaken as usual. In total, £1,539 was raised. Much of this will go to aid
people affected by the recent Nepal earthquake. Senior pupils in the department, helped by members of 1B and
1M1, participated in sponsored silences,
Compassion Day and a mud run (organised by Anjay Sherry and Natalie Cashmore in S5). Koren McGeever
(S6) together with very helpful staff in the PE Dept and a range of willing teacher participants, ran a very
successful ‘I’m a Teacher, Get Me Out of Here!!’
We had a special guest at the event – Ani Yeshe Zangmo, the Buddhist nun who runs the Rokpa office at Samye
Ling. She spoke briefly before the event and was delighted at the level of participation and enthusiasm.
Connor Murray and Jaimie Lochhead (S5) organised a staff/pupils football match for Rokpa. This raised some
much-needed cash but also enabled the boys to exact a degree of revenge on their teachers. The boys claimed
victory.
The staff questioned their numeracy skills. The independent adjudicator announced a draw.
Lessons from Auschwitz Project
Emma McCabe and Aimee Ronald secured places on this year’s project. The girls attended two seminars held at
weekends in Glasgow, met a Holocaust survivor, Zigi Shipper, and visited Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland.
Afterwards, they successfully communicated their message about opposition to racism to junior classes, the
school senate, and participated in the E Ayrshire Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration event at London
Road, in late January. In March they organised a successful fundraising (for Holocaust Educational Trust and
Amnesty International) musical evening at St Columba’s church hall with the help of Rev Lind. They
incorporated awareness-raising into the event by inviting representatives of ‘Gathering the Voices’ (which
focuses on Scottish Holocaust survivors’ stories) to give a presentation.
Amnesty International
The school group campaigned throughout the year against human rights abuses in various parts of the world by
letter-writing and e-mailing. A number of S1 pupils joined the S6 pupils who run the group and most attended
the Holocaust commemoration event mentioned above. The annual S6 auction, organised by Rhona Dunseath
and her helpers raised about £160 for Amnesty International and in May S1 group members ran a piñata event
(part of a wider Amnesty International campaign) to raise funds and pupils’ awareness of torture.
Emma McCabe succeeded in gaining a place on the National Youth Committee which meets 3 times a year in
London!
S1 group members organised and held a successful awareness-raising event as part of Amnesty's anti-torture
campaign, at the end of May. Dozens of junior pupils took part, listening to readings about the use of torture
worldwide, reading posters, thumping piñatas and enjoying their sweet and delightful contents. About £25 was
raised for the work of Amnesty International.
Page 5
Fair Trade
The group continued to be very active in running stalls at Parents’ Nights and special events – the annual
Fairtrade Fortnight allowed members to hold regular stalls and create fair trade poster displays. Members
continue to organise their work together, preparing weekly rotas and identifying products to include in their
stalls. Members ran a successful stall in Dunlop a few months ago at the annual Guild coffee morning. A few
weeks ago members met to distribute funds they had raised and gave away a total of £500 to organisations of
their choice, eg One Water Foundation and the Ayrshire Hospice.
Dalit Solidarity Network
After learning about aspects of Hinduism in their S2 course, members of classes 2B and 2M chose to raise funds
for DSN UK to help in their work to challenge caste discrimination. Pupils, parents and family members gave
generously – over £400 was raised and was sent to DSN in London.
Visits
Senior pupils studying Buddhism as part of their RMPS course visited Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre, in
Eskdalemuir, as part of their studies. The overnight stay included talks/presentations about aspects of Buddhism
and the work of Rokpa; a tour of the temple and grounds; attending and observing temple worship; and a
meditation session.
S3 pupils studying Hinduism in their Nat 4/5 courses enjoyed a day visit to the Hindu temple in Labelle Place
and St Mungo’s Museum of Religious Life & Art, Glasgow, last autumn. The Hindu priest allowed pupils to
explore the temple’s statues and paintings and gave a talk about Hinduism in Scotland today. These visits have
been taking place for many years and the Hindu community has always been particularly kind and helpful in
accommodating us. The visit to St Mungo’s included a ‘Bigot-Busters’ workshop, based on anti-sectarian
attitudes, as well as research and information-gathering about various Hindu beliefs and practices.
Page 6
Athletics
Well done to all pupils who competed in the East Ayrshire Athletics. A number of our pupils did exceptionally
well and qualified for the Ayrshire Athletics Wednesday 3rd June, by finishing 1st/2nd in their respective events.

Brownings Bakery Visit
Higher health and Food Technology pupils went to visit Brownings Bakery Factory in Kilmarnock. Pupils had to
carry out investigations to help them produce a suitable product for a design brief for their Assignment:
Develop a healthy food product for a fast food outlet
OR
Develop a dish for a manufacturer who wishes to increase the use of ethical ingredients.
They got a tour round the factory, interviewed the Owner, John Gall and their Food Product Developer.
John Gall was very good to us and provided snacks and drinks as well as a goody bag to take home.
They both also attended a taste test of the final solutions that were produced in school and provided valuable
feedback for the pupils to use in their evaluations.

Junk Kouture Competition Finalists
Junk Kouture is a recycled fashion contest which encourages all secondary pupils in Scotland to use junk materials to create striking couture designs and impressive works of wearable art.
Junk Kouture has been successfully running in Ireland and Northern Ireland since 2010 and this year has extended
it’s creative platform to Glasgow.
The following pupils were finalists in the Junk Kouture competition and displayed their work on the catwalk at
The Arches in Glasgow.
Well done to: Phoebe McCutcheon, Ashley McCutcheon, Lauren Collins who designed Butterfly Passion,
Leonie McCutcheon and Lauren Eadie for Painted Beauty, Zoe Fulton and Leanne Todd for Muskouture and
Robert Matzka for Firey Plastic
Junk Kouture is due to launch competition for next years’ winner in the month of June …so keep your
eyes peeled and get researching for ideas.
Page 13
Boswell Book Festival
On Friday 8th May, 45x S1/S2 pupils travelled to Dumfries House, Cumnock to attend the Boswell Book Festival.
The Boswell Book Festival is an annual event celebrating the great East Ayrshire writer James Boswell who wrote
the world’s first modern biography.
After enjoying an outdoor packed lunch at the luxurious surroundings of the Dumfries House gardens, pupils enjoyed a talk from highly entertaining author Barry Hutchison. He writes the ‘Invisible Fiends’ horror series about
childhood invisible friends who come alive and try to kill people! Barry was happy to spend time with the pupils
after his talk and signed autographs and posed for selfies! Barry Hutchison’s books proved to be very popular
with a large number of Stewarton Academy pupils buying them at the event.
Pupils then received a tour of the fabulous rooms at Dumfries House which included the Dining Room where
Prince Charles entertains guests when he visits. There was also a unique 18th century cabinet on display which has
a value of £20million!
A writing workshop was also attended and pupils were given advice on how to write a really good letter.
James Boswell was a keen letter writer and described himself as writing ‘many a curious letter’!
Page 14
Stewarton Academy hosted the East Ayrshire Secondary Schools Readers Cup Final event on 26th May 2015. The
Readers Cup is a competition which tests pupils knowledge of books and reading. It takes the format of a quiz
with five rounds and ten questions in each round.
All S1 and S2 Stewarton Academy pupils took part in the Readers Cup Heats during Modern Languages classes
with the best performers making through to the second stage. The top four scorers from the second phase made it
into the Stewarton Academy team. The successful pupils in this selection process were Nicholas Brookes (S2),
Emily Drover (S2), Faye Ronald (S1) and Olivia McCrae (S1).
The pupils read four books in preparation for the competition as follows:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Another Me by Cathy MacPhail
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The Wall by William Sutcliffe
On the day of the competition, the team did themselves and the school proud with an excellent score of 36/50 in a
difficult quiz. This score was enough to secure third place in the competition. The winning team was Kilmarnock
Academy.
Page 15
Mathematics/ICT Department
This was another successful year for the Maths department.
By coming 1st in the East Ayrshire Enterprising Maths competition (organised by The Actuarial Profession),
students from S3 and S4 qualified for the finals at The Glasgow Science Centr. The four successful students were
Kieran Rutherford, Campbell Mitchell, Robyn Morton and Rhona Fulton
Some Stewarton Academy pupils took part in challenges organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.
Billy Brazier of S3 was Stewarton’s top performer in the Intermediate Challenge with 61 points and this score
merited a silver award. Joe Taylor also achieved silver with 55 points.
Bronze certificates were awarded to Anna Millar, Daniel Glasswell, Niamh Campbell, Robyn Morton,
Stuart McFadzean, Jennifer Price and Douglas Bloomfield.
60 S1 and S2 pupils participated in the Junior Challenge with the following awards: Gold:
Callum McFadzean
Silver:
Joseph Meney, Alfie Kelly, Max Wojtowicz, Alice Brazier, Logan Morrison and Lewis Douglas.
Bronze:
Jakub Wojtowicz, Ethan Wilkie, Cameron Clark, Zara Duncan, Jean Andrew, Fraser Wall,
Megan McCall, Anna Bradford, Tyler Hassan, Emily Drover, Liam McNair, Jenny Smith,
Jonathon Irvine, Jonathan Houson, Xander Morrison and Lewis Lennon.
In November Martyna Wojtowicz and Ruaridh Kerr of S5 joined Jonathan Seaman and Calum Sharp of S6
in the UKMT Team Challenge at the Paisley Campus of UWS. 23 teams participated and Stewarton’s team finished in 6th position.
ICT
S3 pupils have been studying the ethical and environmental issues concerned with the manufacture of mobile devices such as tablets and iPhones. One area of study was the sourcing of the metal coltan, an important component
in all mobile devices. There are several sources of coltan, one of them being coltan mines in The Congo. Some of
these mines are run by militia who make use of child soldiers. A group of S3 pupils composed an email to Apple
asking if they used coltan from ethical sources. There reply referred us to their web site.
The Computing department has purchased some Raspberry Pi computers and Paul Pearce of JP Morgan’s IT
department visited the school to deliver a lesson to staff and pupils on how to programme a Raspberry Pi. There
is a shortage of programmers so now is the time to learn to code!
Page 16
Lab in a Lorry
S1, S2 pupils and all of the pupils from our feeder primary schools enjoyed the use of a mobile lab, provided by
the Institute of Physics and concentrating on such topics as Renewable Energy. Resonance and Optoelectronics
during the three day visit to the school. All of the pupils thoroughly enjoyed this taste of real life
physics and were able to experience first-hand how everyday how Science
relates to real life examples.
Salter’s Festival of Chemistry
Massive congratulations to the following S1 pupils who were awarded 1st prize for the University of Glasgow
Challenge at the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry on Thursday 28th May:
Cerys Dunn
Emily Irvine
Olivia McCrae
Ruadh Thomson
The girls were invited to attend the event hosted by the University of Glasgow based on their successful performance and keen attendance at Stewarton Academy’s weekly Science club, where they each consistently demonstrated effective teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Each of the girls performed to a very high standard on the day when competing against 17 other schools from
across Scotland, and the university’s staff were “very impressed” with them. Well done to our Stewarton Stars of
Science!
S4 Dynamic Youth Award Group
Throughout the academic session of 2014-2015, a small group of S4 pupils have participated in the skills-based
course known as the Dynamic Youth Award. Over the year, the pupils have engaged with a variety of activities
suited to develop and strengthen the following skills: communication, organisation, time-management and
money-handling; examples of transferrable attributes needed in the wider world of work. To date, pupils have
helped to raise £130.40 with the organisation and management of a MacMillan Coffee Morning for staff of
Stewarton Academy in October 2014. Additionally, pupils engaged with the planning and completion of a
Christmas project that required each individual involved to seek out their own, unique task which ranged from the
creation of Christmas cards and decorative stockings to the baking of mince pies and
organisation of a staff raffle. This project saw pupils raise £70.05, which was
subsequently donated to Children 1st in March 2015. Most recently, on Sunday 31st
May 2015, some students from the Dynamic Youth Award class attended the Nether
Robertland Primary School Summer Fete to sell homemade candles and cakes to the
Stewarton community. A charity will soon be chosen to receive the £40 raised on the
day. Well done to all of those involved for their hard work and commitment to the
course!
Page 17
S1 and S2
S1 and S2 classes continue to progress through the broad general education as they move to S2 and S3
respectively. We celebrated their successes at an award assembly on the 10th June in which we recognised their
achievements, excellence and hard work. As we move into June there will be a number of activities for the pupils
to enjoy however we will continue to have a focus on learning in all classes to build on the foundations of
knowledge and skills developed throughout the year.
P7 Transition
The next stage in the transition from Primary to Secondary school was the Induction days on the 3 rd and 4th June.
The faculties planned a range of active learning experiences including debating, a design project, making Olympic
medals and social science carousals. Pupils met their new teachers and had the opportunity to experience life at
Stewarton Academy. These days along with the transition programme activities should make the move to
Stewarton Academy a positive experience for all.
Temporary change of DHT S1/S2
Recently we said a temporary good bye to Mrs Yvonne Ward DHT S1 and S2 who left at the end of May on
maternity leave. We wish her all the very best. Mrs Alexis Barbour will now take over her post as Acting DHT
S1/S2.
