OFSTED CALL IN
On Monday 11th May we received the call that we were to be inspected by OfSTED. We had been
expecting the call since our previous inspection was back in 2012. Judith Tolley led the Inspection
Team and additional inspectors Stephen Wall, Derek Barnes and John Ashley accompanied her.
The very experienced team spent two days in school (12th & 13th May) and enjoyed their stay
with us. The team conducted themselves impeccably.
At this stage we are not allowed to publicly release information
connected with grade outcomes and other details linked to the
grading. It is now likely that the earliest that this information will
become public is during the Whitsuntide break. We are looking
forward to sharing the outcome of the report in due course.
Thanks to all parents who completed the on-line questionnaire
accessible via the school website.
HISTORY DEPARTMENT VISIT THE USA
Every year, the History department runs a curriculum trip. This year, instead of Europe, we
decided to head across the Atlantic to New York & Washington to tie in with our Modern World
Unit 2c topic of 'The USA 1919- 1941'. We left school super early on Tuesday 21st April, heading
for Manchester airport. Everyone was really excited! Our flights were uneventful (apart from the
in-flight entertainment breaking down on the way out!) and the group were really well behaved.
It was so exciting to taxi onto the runway at JFK and see the iconic New York skyline. We were
met by Gordon, who would be our guide whilst we were in New York. We arrived at the YMCA,
brilliantly positioned on the West side of Central Park. The accommodation was basic...to say
the least, but the great position made up
for this. Once we were all checked in we
walked down Broadway at dusk to Times
Square where we were booked for dinner
at Planet Hollywood. Jet lag was kicking
in by this point but everyone was really
excited to see Times Square lit up like day,
absolutely pulsating with light and colour.
Up to date news items, reminders and comments relevant to
the education of our pupils and our work in the community.
Now with over 1000 followers. @cardinalallen
The next day - our first full day dawned bright and very early! Not
used to the five hour time lapse,
most were up at the crack of
dawn, despite the very long day
travelling yesterday. Everyone was
downstairs promptly and we set
off into a beautiful New York
morning to get breakfast. En route
we found Gordon, our fab New
York guide whom we had met the
previous night. He came with us to
McDonald's, where we all
indulged in a breakfast...yummy!
Our first outing was a four hour
walking tour of Midtown Manhattan. We started in Central Park, seeing such sights as the
building from Ghostbusters (Mrs McMahon got far too excited about that!) and the Dakota
Building, where John Lennon was shot. We saw the Strawberry Fields memorial to him. The
pupils got very excited over a grey squirrel and we all admired the beautiful spring blossom.
Gordon was brilliant, pointing out film locations and interesting anecdotes along the way.
We had a break at the glitzy Trump Tower and then headed for Fifth Avenue - shopping
Nirvana. It was consummate New York - steaming roads, yellow cabs, police cars - the works! It
was very exciting. We admired the Rockefeller Centre and spotted where the massive Christmas
Tree goes every year. We popped into St Patrick's Cathedral, which was manically busy but
beautiful. We admired the Library on Fifth and views of the Empire State Building and the
Chrysler Building. A much needed rest and lunch was taken in the food courts of the splendid
Grand Central Station.
From here we made our own way to the United Nations building. We had a bit of a wait, which
the pupils took in good grace, and then embarked upon guided tours. It was fab and we even
saw some of the committees of the UN sitting in meetings and conferences.
We headed back towards Fifth Avenue to the Heartland Brewery at the Empire State Building
for a great dinner - so much food! From here we headed to Macy's and the pupils got some
much deserved
shopping time
before heading
back to the
Empire
State
Building and up
to the viewing
deck. Well, it
was
amazing
and a fitting end
to a brilliant day.
Day 3 was a little breezier and colder. We went out for
breakfast again and then had to head back for many of
us to change into more suitable clothes, as we were
freezing. Today we were using the subway to get to
Battery Park to catch the ferry to Liberty Island & Ellis
Island. It was very chilly down by the river and the
ferry even more so but the amazing and iconic views
made up for it. Liberty Island was super interesting and
we got some great pics (including making Danny
Morgan into a Twitter sensation with his Blackpool
scarf!) Ellis Island was interesting but many of the
pupils were exhausted by this time and just wanted to
sit down!
We met Gordon again and he took us for lunch in the Financial District. It was so windy here
you could lean into the wind! ( cue great merriment from the
group when they were all in a cosy restaurant and we were
waiting for them in the cold!). We walked up to Wall Street,
which was much smaller than we expected and then onto the
World Trade Centre site. As you can imagine, this was very
moving. The pupils are too young to remember the events of
that terrible day, although of course they all knew about it. For
those who remember seeing it happen live in the news, it was
incredible to be there. The two memorial water features are
immense, surrounded by the names of all those who are
known to have died on the site, including the victims of the
1996 bombing. The new Freedom Tower is also immense 1776 feet high - a significant date for those who know their
history!
After this sombre moment, we let the pupils loose in the
Century 21 department store for half an hour. This is just behind the World Trade Centre site.
Here they indulged their urge to spend money….Mr Akers won the prize for cheesiest
souvenir with his sky scraper salt & pepper set...!
From here we had another long
hike up to Little Italy, passing City
Hall, the Brooklyn Bridge and
Chinatown on the way. After a
welcome dinner in Little Italy we
caught the subway to Times
Square and had some retail fun!
Back to the YMCA then to pack for
our trip to Washington.
Friday - a sunny day to leave on the
coach and head to Washington
D.C. We passed from New York
State to New Jersey, to Maryland,
to Delaware and finally into
Washington D.C.
We could see the dome of the Capitol Building from quite far off, but it was sadly shrouded
with scaffolding. We met up with our guide, Monica, for a walking tour at our hotel. She
walked incredibly fast and had a red brolly that she used to keep everyone together, much to
the amusement of many pupils! Washington was totally different to NYC - no skyscrapers, wide
streets and a less frenetic pace.
We were taken to the White House (cue selfies and excitement) and then a REALLY LONG but
super interesting tour of the sites of
Washington, including the memorials
to WWII, the Washington Memorial,
the reflecting pool and the incredibly
imposing Lincoln Memorial. We also
saw the Korean War Memorial, the
FDR memorial and the Martin Luther
King Jnr memorial. By this time pupils
were flagging so we headed for dinner
at the Hard Rock Cafe near the hotel.
Another great meal, but we were
turning into cheeseburgers! Everyone
was glad to get into the comfy beds.
Our last day saw us head to the
Capitol Building for a tour, which was
really interesting. We then walked our
flagging group to the National Air and
Space
museum,
which
was
magnificent and full of fab stuff like
the Apollo 11 Space module, some
(hopefully) decommissioned ICBM's,
the Spirit of St Louis and more planes
than you could shake a stick at! After
this it was back to the hotel to collect our bags and make our way to the airport to fly home.
Well, what a trip. The pupils were magnificent and a real credit to themselves and their parents
and the school. Gordon, our
guide in New York, was
particularly impressed with our
pupils. A massive thanks to all
the parents for their support, to
the pupils for their company
and to Mrs Swatton, Mr
Sutcliffe and Mr Akers for
coming along.
ART DEPARTMENT NEWS
The Young Artist of the Year
competition was held at
Blackpool and the Fylde
College on Wednesday 13th
May at 6pm. I am delighted
to
say
that
Gemma
Wright's Art work in Year 11,
has been selected for
exhibition and has been
awarded
as
“Highly
Commended”- only highly
commended
work
is
exhibited.
Well done
Gemma! Mrs Glaister
The department's Stars of the
Week accolade recognises hard
work, outstanding effort or
achievement. The names of those nominated in years 7, 8 and 9 receive their very own "star"
which is placed on the department's noticeboard and pupils also receive recognition at
assemblies.
The following pupils received the most nominations throughout last term and were accordingly
named the department's "Stars of The Term".
Max Dodd (Year 7) and Elliot Higgins (Year 8) tied with Charlotte Butler, Josef Lewis and Reece
Smith of Year 9 and all shared the title.
The race is now on to see who will be the department's overall "Star of The Year", the title going
to the pupil who has received the most nominations over the whole school year.
YEAR 7 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS!
The year 7 boys football squad were successfully
crowned Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Cup Winners
after a nail biting encounter with St Bede’s,
Lytham. Cardinal Allen took the lead with an
excellent piece of individual skill from striker
Owen Mason. Owen was soon to be involved
with the second with a classy finish from distance
from Oliver Orr. The boys have worked extremely
hard in all competitions this year and were able to
narrowly hold on to their lead after St Bede’s
pulled one back late in the game. Special congratulations should go to our joint captains Harry
Pratt and Oliver Orr for their determination and leadership over the year. I’m sure there will be
many more trophies to come with this squad of talented players. Mr McCann
CHAPLAINCY NEWS
Lent Fundraising: After an incredible half term of fundraising, students managed to raise a
staggering £2,082.25 for our Lenten Charities! This was split 3 ways between CAFOD, and Mr
Walker’s and Mr McCann’s London Marathon charities, the British Heart Foundation and
Ronald McDonald House. Each charity received £694.08. We added the CAFOD money to the
money already raised this year by the CAFOD team and sent them a total of £1,270.94 to help
those in need across the world, which will be matched £1 for £1 by the government. Rosa Trelfa
from CAFOD Lancaster said “Wow- you are totally amazing at Cardy! Thank you for helping
people build a brighter future through CAFOD’s projects worldwide.”
Particular congratulations must go to Mrs Doran’s form, 7 Gregory, who managed to raise
£281.47 through a variety of activities, including a sponsored run; the class decided to run a
marathon between them, and managed to clock up 26 miles on the running machines in the
fitness suite- WELL DONE! No class has EVER raised such a total before, and the form were
rewarded with a tray of cupcakes to mark this success. 3 other forms also managed to raise over
£100 each: huge congratulations to 8CO (£135), 7BE (£117.74) and 10AG (£116.38) for making
such a super effort selling cakes, raffling chocolate hampers and waxing legs (!) for three
exceptionally good causes!
Risen Lord Mass: We started off the new term by celebrating the resurrection together at our
Risen Lord Mass. Staff and students joined together to remember that Easter doesn’t finish on
Bank Holiday Monday, once the eggs have been devoured and the visitors have gone home. We
are called to celebrate for 50 days, and celebrate we did with our lovely Easter Mass. Huge
thanks for Fr Gerry Dunn for celebrating Mass with us, and for everyone who attended and
contributed.
CAFCA cake sale:
A team of student
Council Members, Duke
of Edinburgh volunteers,
staff
and
parent
members of CAFCA
devoted their time to
baking and selling a
fantastic selection of
delicious cakes to raise
money for CAFCA, which
provides support for pupils in our school. We raised a total of £107.11. All of the money will
come back into school through provision of equipment and support for our students. A huge
thanks to all who got involved, especially to parents Mrs Raseta and Mrs Morgan for the homemade cakes: they were a real hit with our students!
Fairtrade Primary Assemblies (reprive): Our Global Warriors were asked to dust off their
aprons, put on their welly boots and clear their throats to deliver their fantastic Fairtrade
assembly to two more of our local primary schools. Following the success of the assemblies in
Fairtrade Fortnight, we were invited to St Mary’s Fleetwood and Larkholme to share our
message about the trade industry and the importance of Fairtrade. St Mary’s Primary followed
up our assembly with a “fair break”, selling Fairtrade hot chocolate and biscuits to reinforce the
message. We wish them well with their Fairtrade efforts, and hope the fair breaks continue!
Deanery Mass: On Wednesday 13th May, Cardinal Allen was host to a Deanery Eastertide Mass,
one of a series of weekly Masses to take place around the Deanery. We welcomed visitors from
every Parish in our community, and joined together to celebrate Eastertide with our Deanery
Friends. Our students led the readings and singing, and we all enjoyed a chat over a brew and
some cake afterwards. This was the first time Cardinal Allen School has hosted a Deanery Mass,
and all who participated and prepared for it were very pleased to be involved in the Deanery
Mass roster. Thank you to all who attended and made the evening so special, especially to Mrs
Horan for the home made cakes and our local clergy for their continued support of school
events.
Nepal Crisis Appeal: As a response to the terrible crisis in Nepal, our CAFOD students have
been working hard to raise money to help those affected by the recent earthquakes. The
students have organised bucket collections, donations on the tills at lunchtimes and a raffle to
raise money for this cause. They will continue to work hard to put on their own events over the
next few weeks and raise as much money as they can to help those in need.

Grimm Tales: Well done to all Year 7 pupils who were
lucky enough to be chosen by Usborne Young Writers to
have their Grimm Tales published.
A BIG thank you for your help and support!
On Saturday 18th April 2015, approximately 90 pupils, staff, governors, parents and friends took
part in 5 hours of rowing to raise money for CAFCA. The day was a huge success with some
fantastic costumes to represent the countries taking part in the Rugby World Cup. In particular
the ‘Bey Hives’ team in year 7, wearing Japan colours, were excellent. The atmosphere was
overwhelming with everyone showing great team work and spirit throughout the gruelling 5
hours. I hope everyone has fully recovered from the exertion of the event.
We are still collecting sponsorship money so are unable to provide a grand total at this moment
in time.
Mrs Orwin would like to thank everyone who played a part in making the 2015 rowing event
such a success!

we hope will be a pleasant evening.
The cost of the evening is only £10 per family (2 adults, 3 children) or £2 per adult and £2 per
child. The price includes your first item of food from the barbecue. If you are still hungry,
additional food will be available and there will also be a licensed bar. During the evening there

Solar Eclipse: Our students were able to view the recent Eclipse following the donation of 900
solar viewing glassesfrom Jonathan Higginson, the father of George Higginson, a keen
astronomer who unfortunately was killed in a traffic accident at the age of 10. A bucket
collection on the day made nearly £100 which will go towards an observatory in Williamson park
Lancaster. Any further donations would be gratefully accepted.

ECO NEWS—Eco Inspection: A big congratulations to our Eco team in securing our 6th Green
flag. The Assessors comments were particularly pleasing to receive.
‘I would like to thank the whole school for making me feel so welcome. All the children
including the committee members who provided the tour were exceptionally polite and well
behaved. The school should be extremely proud. Special thanks also to Andrew Harding and
the committee ( Matthew G, Matthew M, Niamh, Emily, Jane, Stephen, Jorge, Shannon, Abi,
Jane and Daniel) for their passion and enthusiasm in the work they do. The gardens and
woodland area which are accessible to all the school are well thought out and beautiful. The
commitment to the community and local schools is outstanding. Well done and keep up the
great work’.
Eco Fashion show: This year’s Eco Fashion Show was held at
Shakespeare school and as in previous years proved a massive
success. This year we had 6 schools, CAHS, Shakespeare, St
Wulstan’s, St Mary’s, Larkholme and Manor Beach attending,
which shows this event to be gaining in popularity.
After a morning designing and making costumes from recycled
materials the students of the school and numerous visiting
members of the community were treated to a grand parade of Eco
Fashion. A thoroughly enjoyable day showing what can be made
out of waste materials when children use their imagination and
textile skills. A special well done to Jamie Johnston who
demonstrated he is a potential great model!
Eco group planting: The Eco group have also been busy planting
vegetables in our allotment, sewing wild flower seeds in our
environmental area and are helping Eco schools out with a
national survey of the British Bee population.
Hens: Our hens have a new
home! A new 5* run has just
been completed in the Chapel
garden. This new home will add
extra life to the centrepiece of
our school and means the hens
will be more accessible to our
students.
Transgenerational IT group:
Our national award winning
group are still meeting every
Tuesday 3pm-4pm. This term we are working on a beach project. If you know anyone who may
be interested in joining please pass on this invite.
D of E: Our year 9 and 10 Bronze D of E groups recently enjoyed passing their practice
expedition in the Silverdale and Arnside area. We were blessed with fine weather and all
demonstrated excellent camping skills over the 2 expedition days. Navigation is a bit of an issue
for one or two of our year 9 group who just cannot resist taking a footpath regardless of the
direction it takes them. The groups are
now in training for their assessment in
the West Pennine moors.
The silver group have planned their
expeditions in Ribblesdale and the
Yorkshire Dales.
There is also a large number of personal
development projects being carried out
ranging from Rock climbing to ementoring and vegetable growing.
Earl of Wessex: Mr Mooney, Mr Harding
and Mrs Stone were recently invited to
attend a meeting with Prince Edward
the Earl of Wessex on his visit to
County Hall Preston to review the
progress Lancashire has made in its D
of E initiative.
Kit 4 Kolkata: A big thank you to
Fleetwood Town FC who have
promised us this season’s kit from
some of their squads. We will be
sending it over to Kolkata, India
shortly along with the kit already
kindly donated. This kit will be given
to the students at the Hope
foundation, a charity that helps the street children of the city.
Interact group: You might have wondered what all these strange sights were in Cleveleys but
do not panic it was our Interact group in disguise and all in aid of Brian House.
Cardinal Allen High School has recently become a member of Interact which is a Youth branch
of Rotary. We have formed ties with North Fylde Rotary Cleveleys and this was the first
Charity fund raising venture for Cardinal Allen’s Interact group. Fifteen pupils boarded a tram
at Broadwater alongside members of North Fylde Rotary to help shake buckets along the way
to Cleveleys. Passengers were quite happy to share a seat with mad scientists and Despicable
Me characters who despite their guises were all impeccably behaved!
Christine Smith Chaplain from Cardinal Allen really got into the spirit of the walk by appearing
as a Minion from Despicable Me and said ‘ the students wanted to do something for a local
Charity and also have some fun and they have certainly enjoyed themselves. They are a great
bunch!’
After visiting Jolly Tars, The Venue and Harvester collecting with his bucket a final word from
student Matthew Gowens, the group’s Community Officer who in his Union Jack onesie and a
big smile gave a ‘High Five’ and said ‘ it’s been a brilliant day!’ This walk has raised £600 to
date which will be presented to Brian House in June. An excellent first project for our Interact
group!
Our Interact group are currently developing links with a
school in Zulu Natal Land.
Rotary Youth Leadership award: A big well done to
Kaitlin Reid who after a very competitive series of
interviews was selected to receive the Fylde Rotary
Youth Leadership Award 2015.
This award means that Kaitlin will now be enrolled on a
leadership development course at Castle Head field
centre in Cumbria this Summer where she will develop
many career enhancing skills.
VISITORS FROM BIRLA HIGH SCHOOL, KOLKATA
We are, once again, delighted to welcome teachers and pupils from Birla High School, Kolkata
as part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms International Schools project. This year is
something of a landmark occasion with two other schools (Shakespeare Community Primary
School, Fleetwood & St William’s Catholic Primary School, Pilling) also hosting teachers from
India. Our three UK schools and the three India schools have formed a cluster partnership so as
to widen the participation of each of their communities.
Cardinal Allen plays host to Renuka Chotrani who has been wholly responsible at the Birla HS
end for the success of this project so far. Renuka’s work is to organise Birla’s extensive
International Exchange Programme which also includes links with China and Germany. She is
ensuring that Birla High School is not only committed to its goal of creating Global citizens of its
students but that the International Programmes available are fully exploited. Geography Head
of Department Madhumita Chaudhuri is accompanying Renuka and she is, herself, very welltravelled having visited the UK on previous occasions. Pupils Kaustav Roy and Shubham Agarwal
link up with our own pupils Leon Taylor and Serena Edwards who have the opportunity of a visit
to Kolkota in October.
Completing the picture it was lovely to meet primary phase teachers Subhasree Sengupta Das,
Farida Singh, Runa Basu and Sharon Jacqueline D’Souza during our visit to a cool (for May at
least) Grasmere in the Lake District on Sunday. As usual there is a packed week of activities for
our guests including trips out to Liverpool and our own show ‘Alice’ which takes place this
week.
‘ALICE’ 2015
“I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then…” Cardinal Allen’s Theatre
Company ‘Bravo!’ takes a step into the weird and wonderful world of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ this
week. The updated version of ‘Alice’ is a feast for the eyes, with the iconic characters of The
Queen of Hearts (Mollie Clark), The Mad Hatter (Jamie Johnson) and Tweedle Dum & Tweedle
Dee (Ben Wright and Sam Hackett) all embracing their roles with the utmost of enthusiasm.
The set, costumes and make-up have the fantastic flair and colourful creativity of Lewis Carroll’s
original characters, whereas the script and storyline has been adapted to present the
characters 150 years after the story was written.
Following a bump to the head, Alice (Leah Pendlebury) is the latest in a long line of ‘Alices’ to
visit Wonderland and find the words to her story. Alice is accompanied on her journey by her
faithful cat Dinah (Katie Lever) and the White Rabbit (Jessica Qualter). A highlight of this
performance
is
the
amazing dancing, from
heartfelt lyrical and ballet
routines which will bring
a tear to your eye to foottapping ‘Uptown Funk’
which presents the Mad
Hatter and the crazy
guests at his famous tea
party!
As for the Cheshire Cat,
this grinning feline is now
presented as the 2015
celebrity ‘Cat’ (Jessica
Basquill) who guides the
audience through this
story as the clock tick-tock, tick-tock, TICKS…
So…are you ready for the next chapter in Wonderland? Just remember…we’re all MAD here!
