It is that bittersweet time of year when school starts and the lazy days of August remind us that not only will the leaves begin their traditional change from summer to fall, but the season of weekday and weekend horse activities will also make their transition from summertime to fall. We have enjoyed an outstanding horse show season. The club has enjoyed fantastic growth and the fun of seeing many new faces and families at the shows. Thanks to each of you for being part of the season, for encouraging new participation and membership, and for helping out in so many different ways. Mark your calendars for October 19th when we will celebrate the season with an evening of the Fall Meeting and Awards. Take some time to read through the newsletter and enjoy a recap of our summer events as we close the arena gates and hear the click of the lock on another successful BHC season. Page 2 BHC Newsletter Playday Report By Anne Earsley Another fun and successful year of Play Days has come to an end. We had an average of 56 contestants per show with many new faces! The Adult classes were often the largest. One show had 15 contestants in Western Pleasure - makes for great competition! We offered a couple of new classes this year. The 2 & 3 year old walk trot seemed to be very popular. A Great Playday Season!! Do You Hear What I Hear We, as the Board, make a sincere effort to listen to our members and recognize the value of their ideas Thank you to all club members who helped in the arena, at the gate or in the crow's nest. Special thanks to Gail & Pat Lengenfelder, Doreen Swenson and Chuckie Heim. Gail is the Play Day announcer, Pat is the chuckwagon chef, and Doreen & Chuckie donated their time and expertise to judge trail. It is great to have club members so willing to help out. Online registering makes my job so much easier - we will continue this next year. We have great prizes to give away at our upcoming awards banquet. Hope to see you all there and in the arena next summer! Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson and suggestions. This year we have tried new classes and different things. Here is a sampling of the classes we added into some of our shows: 2 and 3year old classes, Yearling Lungeline, Trail-in-hand, and the Ranch Horse Competition. Page 3 BHC Newsletter Arena Report Putting the arena to sleep for the winter. By Steve Krentz I mainly just want to provide a few comments about this year at the Walt Neuen’s Horse Park. Since the arena was moved to the present location from near the Elks Lodge over four decades ago, the one thing that amazes people who show there is what a great facility, and I can’t agree more. A lot of reason for that is all of you. Whether it’s chipping in to help promote the Bismarck Horse Club events, cleaning up leaves and branches in the spring, mending a rail fence, or even just picking up after yourself and others; it all helps to keep the place a great tribute to our organization. It’s been a fairly busy summer for all of us and there were enough activities to keep most folks happy. A little too much rain in June dampened a few barrel racers, however, it was a great season. The Board will be dealing with the road raise and flood control project this fall with implications of costing the club some funds over the next few years. More to be discussed in upcoming meetings. The washout by the gate was finally fixed and hopefully with the road work, we can get the runoff to go somewhere else. Mainly a lot of thanks to all of you for the opportunity to assist the Bismarck Horse Club promote equine events and our love of horses. Have a great fall and if you have any comments or suggestions on how to make this organization even There is one more event scheduled for the calendar as I write this and the Arabian show is coming back after last year and they’ll be adding some open classes with jackpot so come down and ride for fun. better, please get in touch with the Board members or attend one of the meetings. Thanks Steve and Sharon Krentz I guarantee come December you’ll wish you took that Some people dream of success… while one more chance to ride. others wake up and work hard at it. Fall Meeting and Awards Night Be sure to join us on October 19th as we present year-end awards and place the final votes to elect new officers for 2014. It will be our traditional potluck extravaganza that you and your family will not want to miss! We will communicate the time and place in an upcoming email. See you all there! Congratulations on your Success!!!!!! October 19 Anonymous Page 4 BHC Newsletter Membership Information By Gail Lengenfelder Get your membership dues in early for the 2014 season!!! There were 75 memberships paid for the 2012-2013 year. Included were memberships for Family memberships ($25), Single adult memberships ($20), Single youth memberships ($15), and Jack Benny memberships ($15). We appreciate and welcome the diverse memberships and received them from as far away as Minot, Zap, Belfield, Manning and Dickinson ND along with Walker, McLaughlin and Lemmon SD – and – Arkansas! There were 89 memberships paid for the 2011-2012 year. We saw a slightly lower number in memberships this year due to the Bismarck English Riders club dissolving, lower numbers in the 4-H horse program and the Bismarck Mounted Police not using the Walt Neuen’s Arena this year for their practice. Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. Winston Churchill Sponsors A great big THANKS!!!! to those who gave sponsorships or donated time, talents, or materials to the Bismarck Horse Club. GOLD LEVEL SPONSORS Financial sponsorships allow the BHC to provide quality awards, pay highly qualified judges, maintain our grounds and equipment, and cover our facility costs. Our sponsors this year are Bill Barth Ford with a Gold Level Sponsorship, Trucks Trailers & More with a Bronze Level Sponsorship, and the Schaff Family with a Champion Level Sponsorship. Also, Warrens Locks & Keys donated the replacement of locks and keys after the flood damage. We would also like to recognize Western Unlimited and Interstate Western Works for their sponsorship of the Ranch BRONZE LEVEL SPONSORS Horse Competition. Finally, “KUDOS” are given to all who attended monthly BHC Board meetings to offer valuable input, as well as everyone who donated smarts or sweat equity to help the Playdays move along so successfully. This would not happen without all your help and support! Thank you!
