2 0 0 8 Report to Donors Message from Our Presidents Dedicated Leaders Supporting Your Health Your gifts help our family of physicians, nurses and other health-care professionals deliver the right care at the right time to you, your family and your neighbours. Markham Stouffville Hospital exists to deliver quality patient care for our communities close to home. Thank you to the 2008-2009 Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation Board of Directors for your support of health care in our community. The Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation’s mission is to support patient care at our Hospital through a comprehensive fundraising program, and we are pleased to share with you the Foundation’s inaugural Report to Donors. Janet M. Beed President & CEO, Markham Stouffville Hospital This report highlights the Foundation’s accomplishments in 2007-2008 and shows you how your support makes a difference. Together, we raised $3.6 million in support of patient care at our Hospital. Through the strong support of its donors, Markham Stouffville Hospital continues to provide patients with the best in progressive care. As you may know, the government does not fund all new and replacement medical equipment. We rely on the generosity of our donors. With your gifts, the Hospital is able to fund important clinical initiatives. Thanks to the fundraising success within our communities, Markham Stouffville Hospital opened our state-of-the-art Breast Health Centre, which we built and fully-equipped. Your generosity enabled the Hospital to purchase vital life-saving medical equipment, such as a gamma camera, which uses nuclear medicine to view images of the human body to diagnose things like heart disease. Suzette Strong President, Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation Your giving is a sign of confidence in our team of health-care professionals, who strive to deliver the ultimate care to each and every patient. We hope you enjoy these stories as much as we enjoy sharing them with you. Like you, we are so proud of Markham Stouffville Hospital and the quality of care that our Hospital provides. Your support will continue to be more important than ever as the Foundation embarks upon its largest fundraising campaign in support of our Hospital’s plans for expansion. Yours Sincerely, Janet M. Town of Markham Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville Leading the Way with 500,000 Reasons to Expand “We Need More Hospital for Our Population” “Markham Stouffville Hospital is the cornerstone for a healthy community,” John Gibson firmly stated during a celebration for his family’s $500,000 donation in support of the Hospital’s upcoming expansion project. His wife, Diane, chimed in: “We’d like everybody in our community to have a good level of health care, and without this expansion, we don’t have a hope of continuing to provide that to our growing community.” John and Diane Gibson on-set at the Hospital for a video shoot to commemorate their donation. Visit our website to view the video: www.msh.on.ca/gibsonvideo Markham Mayor and Campaign Co-Chair Frank Scarpitti celebrates with Diane & John. The Hospital recognized the Gibsons’ generosity by naming a space in the Breast Health Centre in honour of their donation. The Gibsons are passionate advocates for the Hospital’s need for expansion. Their leadership donation in March has inspired more than mere appreciation for the Hospital’s services. While Diane ultimately had a positive outcome, she quickly reinforced her reason for making the donation: “We need more Hospital for our population.” The couple makes a point of encouraging others to step up to the plate as they campaign for what they believe to be our community’s most important cause. During the celebration in the Hospital’s auditorium – an evening the Foundation organized in thanks for their gift – John and Diane convinced their friends and family to participate and raised over $30,000 on the spot! Diane elaborated: “The staff are doing such a wonderful job, but there must be a breaking point. They just can’t serve any more people in the current space; they need a bigger facility and the right tools.” “Our donation was intended to be one of leadership,” John explained. “I hope that we are leading by example, and that we inspire others to “The staff are doing recognize the importance of giving and to dig such a wonderful deep.” John and Diane are personally aware of the Hospital’s urgent need to expand. Shortly after giving their gift, Diane spent a week in the Hospital, where she personally benefitted from the excellent patient care. She also witnessed the strain on staff due to the minimal space in which they have to work. job, but there must be a breaking point. They just can’t serve any more people in the current space” “I awoke in the middle of the night with tremendous chest pain, which shot down my left arm,” Diane recalled. “It got progressively worse until I convinced John to take me to the ER.” After being admitted to a bed, Diane received numerous tests throughout the week, as well as an angioplasty. Her cardiologist, Dr. Pasricha, put her on medication while closely monitoring her. With the population of Markham, Stouffville and surrounding communities ever-increasing, Hospital administrators have been working on plans to keep up with our population’s demand for health care. “I was so impressed that all the physicians, specialists and nurses were able to do all that they did with such a limited amount of staff and space. Everyone was so helpful. I had everything I needed while in the Hospital. The staff went above and beyond their call of duty – we could not have been better treated.” “The Ministry of Health and Infrastructure Ontario are working with us on the approval of our Functional Program,” explained Janet Beed, President and CEO of Markham Stouffville Hospital. “Our current schedule is to have a shovel in the ground in May, 2010, and we look forward to celebrating this exciting milestone with the community. The expected completion date is 2014.” As the Hospital continues to finalize the details of its plans for expansion, the Foundation is gearing up to go. Thanks to early leadership gifts, the Foundation is beginning to raise the community’s share of the cost, while continuing to support the Hospital’s annual equipment needs. Building a hospital is a partnership between the government and the community. We need our community’s help to raise part of the construction costs, as well as all equipment and furnishings for our new Hospital. “John and Diane’s generosity and early investment in our new Hospital is truly inspiring,” commented Suzette Strong, President of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation. “I think if we’re living in the community, participating in the community and benefitting from what the community has to offer, it’s up to us to give something back,” John Our Donors Make a Difference We are proud to recognize our most generous donors. Betty hoped to put the whole experience behind her when she found a lump in her own breast. “The physician in Florida thought it was just an infection,” explained Betty. “But after Debbie’s experience, I wasn’t going to take any chances. We flew home right away for a mammogram, which revealed a tumour.” A Mother & Daughter’s Fight Against Cancer It was just another annual mammogram for 45-year-old Debbie. This time the results would be devastating. While Debbie underwent chemotherapy, her 71-year-old mother, Betty, was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Debbie’s Story “During my screening mammogram at Markham Stouffville Hospital, the technician found a small nodule in my breast, and advised we watch it for growth,” Debbie recalled. “Three months later it was the same size, but after six months it had quadrupled.” Debbie went to the Hospital’s Breast Health Centre, a one-stop clinic with a focus around each woman’s personal needs. “The morning after the troublesome mammogram and ultrasound, I received a call before 8 a.m.,” Debbie explained. “I was back in the Centre that very day by 10 a.m. for a consultation with the surgeon and a biopsy. At the Breast Health Centre, everything seems to move very quickly. The efficiency continues to amaze me.” A week after her biopsy, she received a call at the cottage. The news was not good. “I was surprised more than anything,” Debbie recalled of her positive breast cancer diagnosis. “I took a more logical approach, rather than having an emotional response. The first thing I did was go to the computer to educate myself about the disease.” She received an MRI, followed by a lumpectomy. But the cancer had spread too quickly, and within a month Dr. Alan Ing, one of the Centre’s surgeons, performed a mastectomy and removed the remaining lymph nodes. “I started chemo in November and underwent radiation therapy in early spring,” she remembered. And just when she thought the process was coming to an end, a phone call from her mother brought it all back again – twofold. Still undergoing chemotherapy, Debbie could not believe the news. “I wished I could go through the whole thing again rather than have my mother go through any part of it,” she said. Debbie immediately called Markham Stouffville’s Breast Health Centre to book an appointment for her mother, suggesting she see Dr. Ing. “Because of Debbie’s positive experience, I decided to go,” said Betty. “During my first visit, I had a consultation with Dr. Ing, an ultrasound and a biopsy. I was exceedingly pleased, both with the speed of the process and because everything was coordinated in a single location and appointment time. We were in and out in less than two hours.” Coordinator Kim Olidis with Dr. Alan Ing, just one of the Breast Health Centre’s four general surgeons. Dr. Ing performed a mastectomy on Debbie in the fall of 2007. Debbie suggested that Dr. Ing perform her mother’s lumpectomy when she was diagnosed. Dr. Ing performed Betty’s lumpectomy in April, 2008. “We’ve been told by other experts that, thanks to Dr. Ing’s skill and expertise, my mother only required one surgery,” Debbie explained. Then Betty began treatment. “It was much easier for me after seeing my daughter get through it so positively. It is very difficult to feel that you’re ill with this disease because you don’t feel sick – you’re not hurting.” Your Role in the Fight Against Breast Cancer Thanks to the 7,000 donors who gave to Markham Stouffville Hospital last year, the Hospital was able to open a centralized clinic to provide women in our community with comprehensive breast health services, tailored to their needs. “I wished I could go through the whole thing again rather than have my mother go through any part of it” “Our Breast Health Centre provides patients with quick access to assessment, surgery and treatment,” explained Dr. Ing. “The objective is to organize the appointments for the patient, to decrease wait times and to ease the stress and sleepless nights she experiences.” “Everything was coordinated for us; we didn’t have to worry about anything,” Debbie and Betty agreed. “We were navigated through the system and always felt like people – never numbers.” With one in nine women in our community diagnosed with breast cancer every year, the need for these services is clear. In the past, women who found a lump were responsible for planning and coordinating their care – from booking appointments to bringing their X-rays. The wait times could be weeks or even months. To a woman with breast cancer, time can be a death sentence. Kim Olidis is the coordinator at the Centre who organizes appointments and A Mother & Daughter’s Fight Against Cancer treatment plans for every patient. In the Centre’s first nine months in operation, Kim helped 800 women. “We can’t say enough about Kim!” Debbie and Betty agreed. “The people at the Centre are amazing. It feels good to know that our follow-up care is there, and that the Centre continues to be there for us. It gives us a real sense of comfort.” Your gifts to Markham Stouffville Hospital help women like Debbie and Betty access fast, quality care. Thank you. “At the Breast Health Centre, everything seems to move very quickly. The efficiency continues to amaze me” Did You Know ...in 2007-08: • The Breast Health Centre had over 2,000 patient visits, diagnosing and treating close to 800 women • Our radiologists performed over 9,000 mammograms, 4,000 MRIs and 300 breast biopsies • Our surgeons performed over 220 breast cancer surgeries • Our Centre successfully reduced the wait time between finding a lump to surgery to just 3 weeks from 6 – 8 weeks • We raised $1.1 million to build our Breast Health Centre, which opened in June, 2007 $250 - $999 continued Eric Vilensky Franco Villa Frank Vysoki David & Alice Wang Brenda Wareham Siek Wassenaar Brian Watkinson Ruth Watson Alex Weatherill Robert Webber Soma Weerasinghe Jeff & Laya Weissberger Victor & Lorraine Wells Waltraut Weprajetzki Judson Whiteside Paul & Helen Whittaker Eileen Wideman Kent & Judy Wideman Jacqueline Wilfert Stephen & Jackie Wilkinson Josephine Williamson Douglas & M. Women Supporting Women in the Fight Against Breast Cancer Girls just want to have fun. That’s why Unionvillers Lisa Cabrelli and Trish Forrestall founded an all-women’s golf fundraiser in 1999 after taking up the challenging sport. So when it came time to decide where to donate the funds, it was only natural to give to a cause that supports women. Both Lisa and Trish had a growing number of friends and family members diagnosed with breast cancer, so it was time to join the fight. “My mom is a two-time breast cancer survivor,” said Trish. “Everyone is touched by this awful disease. Helping means a lot to me and my family.” The Unionville Ladies Golf Tournament was a huge success. In its first year, the golfers raised $10,000. Ten years later, the girls are still at it. In 2008, the proceeds have more than tripled, with an astounding $45,000 in support of Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Breast Health Centre. Because of our community’s fundraising efforts, Markham Stouffville Hospital was able to build and open its Breast Health Centre and equip it with a state-of-the-art digital mammography machine for diagnoses and biopsy services. “It means more to people to know their money is not going downtown into a pot somewhere,” Lisa explained. “With the money going to our community hospital, we can personally see how it is being used and witness it helping the women we love. It’s rewarding to see what a fantastic time the ladies have at our event and to know we’re making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.” This tournament is proof that girl power really can make a difference! Trish Forrestall (left) and Lisa Cabrelli founded the Unionville Ladies Golf Tournament in 1999. The tournament has raised $88,000 in support of breast health services at Markham Stouffville Hospital.
