‘The Sweets’ take over
as CND’s UK distributor
First formed in 2006, Sweet
Squared Ltd is headed by
Samuel and Samantha
Sweet; joining this team are
Gigi Rouse, who first
introduced CND to the UK
twenty years ago, and CND
co-founder Jim Nordstrom.
Samantha and Samuel
Sweet’s previous
involvement with the CND
brand goes back several
years, with Samantha
holding the position of
Director of PR at The
Hyperion Group, and
Samuel being former
Education Director for The
Hyperion Group. Samuel is
also the man behind the
successful Salongeek.com
online community.
Rhonda Benbo, CND’s
Vice President of
International, comments:
“We are thrilled that Sweet
Squared will be CND’s new
distributor in the UK. Sam
and Samantha have been a
big part of the CND family
for many years, and it’s a
natural transition to take the
best of the past and mix it
with the best of the future!”
Many nail technicians have
experienced difficulties in
obtaining products over the
summer, with little or no
information available from

Sweet Squared Ltd has been announced as
the new distributor for Creative Nail
Design in England, Scotland and Wales,
following the recent demise of former
distributor The Hyperion Group. Irish nail
techs will be serviced by Creative Nail
Academy Ireland.
Creative Nail Design. It is
hoped that the
announcement of this new
distribution deal for CND
products will provide a
solution for salons and nail
techs who have struggled to
fulfil client bookings due to
lack of stock.
Salon owner and CND
technician Jennifer Evans,
of Posh Nail & Beauty,
explains: “This summer has
been a nightmare for me
and many other techs who
have relied on CND
products throughout their
career.
“I started to lose faith with
CND over the past year as I
found it difficult to place
orders or get a good level
of customer service from
them (The Hyperion
Group). I have been a
Creative customer for many
years, and yet received no
correspondence over the
summer from either them
(CND) or The Hyperion
Group regarding placing
orders.
“Many of my clients expect
to have Creative products
used on their nails, but in
order to fulfil bookings
over the summer, I had to
train in an alternative
system. I think I will
remain using two different
brands until my faith in
CND distribution in the UK
is restored.”
Sweet Squared Ltd will
take over the previous
premises and telephone
lines of The Hyperion
Group for the foreseeable
future which they hope will
ease their customers’
transition.

Anne Berrett has been named as The Natural Nail
Company’s ‘Salesperson of the Year’. Along with
runners up Dawn Taylor and Sarah Ball, Anne
was treated to an unforgettable pampering at
Jessica’s own flagship Clinic on Sunset
Boulevard, Beverley Hills.
Commenting on their achievements, managing
director of The Natural Nail Company Susan
Gerrard says: “We have an amazing sales team,
many of whom have been with us for years, and
they put their heart and soul into the job because
they believe in the products and treatments and
are passionate about helping their spas and
salons.”
The three winners enjoyed a fabulous trip, firstly
being greeted by Jessica’s personal chauffeurdriven limo at the airport. With sightseeing,
dinners, a tour of HQ and shopping on the
agenda, the team were treated liked royalty. There
was even a little time to relax, sip cocktails and
soak up the Californian sunshine.

Swiss beauty house Mavala are celebrating 20 years in the UK headed up by
father and son team Chris and Jonathan Hodge.
Working with family is often seen as a challenge, but it’s proved to be a winning formula for Mavala,
with family run branches all over Europe.
Although Jonathan is Chris’
natural successor, Chris is
quick to point out that it has not
all been smooth sailing for
him. “He has had to work his
way up from the bottom,
understanding
how
the
company works from the
warehouse to management, as
well as controlling his own
sales area,” he says.
In their two decades together,
Chris and Jonathan have
expanded the Mavala brand
from the core nail care range to
a full beauty collection, and
now distribute to prestigious
department stores such as
Harrods,
John
Lewis,
Fenwicks and Selfridges.

Franchise opportunities
New York City Nails officially opened for business in December 2004 and have subsequently opened 22
outlets throughout the UK and Ireland since then. Now, the company has launched their Franchise Nail
Bars and are welcoming enquiries from potential franchisees.
Company Director Tiernan Lynch is very excited about New York City Nails’ plans to franchise into
department stores such as Debenhams and Shaws. “This will be a fantastic opportunity for sole traders
to do business under the umbrella of a major department store,” she says. “An opportunity like this
would usually be out of reach for potential nail bar owners trying to set up their own business. Interest
from potential franchisees is already coming in - we have plenty of locations to offer, we just need to
make sure that we partner with the right franchisee.”

Susan shares Free nail system at
her passion your fingertips . . .
Susan Gerrard, founder of The Natural Nail
Company, captivated the audience at the recent
Santi Passion for Business Conference 2007.
Susan was asked to tell the
story of how she fell in love
with nails and found the Jessica
brand, and the audience was led
through a wonderful story of a
little luck and an awful lot of
hard work, some immensely
difficult times and some joyous
memories.
The range boasts many benefits for the modern nail tech, including self-levelling properties for easy
application, a non-yellowing formula, and a cushioning effect for clients whose nails are prone to lifting.

for cancer
patient
Nail technician Erica Hinnigan of the Nail
Lounge in Lincoln, together with Supernail
Ltd, has helped a client suffering from breast
cancer to keep her nails healthy and her spirits
high, after chemotherapy sessions left them
flaking, discoloured and coming away from the
nail bed.
Having used Supernail’s
Backstratchers for three
years previous, the client, Ms
B, continued to visit Erica
for treatments post-chemo.
“Erica ensured that my
morale was boosted by
making sure that my nails
always looked beautiful,
tipped, manicured and
polished,” Ms B explained.
“She very carefully guided
and reconstructed my nails
using Backscratchers, and
was able to minimise the
discomfort caused because
of the exposed nail beds. She
The first 500 requests registered at www.unitedbeauty.co.uk/ilovefusion will receive a Fusion™ trial

“We’re finding that most Fusion™ customers are those who’ve switched brands from an older system
that they can no longer easily buy or one that can’t compete with the benefits of Fusion™,” says Guy
Maddock, Head of Marketing for United Beauty. “Our customers tell us that once they’ve tried Fusion™
they don’t want to switch back because the product is stronger, faster and clearer than anything they’ve
used before.”
Explaining the key factors of
her success with the Jessica
brand, she cited keeping true to
the brand, always putting
quality of product and
consistency of service through
exceptional training first, and
acknowledging the value of

Liquid and powder is the mountain of all nail systems - beginners look up at
it in awe and trepidation, many may have tried and failed to master it, and
those who have succeeded swear by the system.
United Beauty offers a three-level conversion course to liquid and powder, whether you’re a beginner or an

Whether you’re a nail

in nature), the liquid and
powder system is as popular
today as it was back in the
golden age of Hollywood,
when it was first used by
nail gurus looking to create
a special effects manicure
for the stars of the 1950s
and ‘60s.
The Lena White Institute of Education runs a four-day liquid and powder course using OPI’s Absolute Acrylic
system.
Renowned for being the
most difficult nail system to
master (and we couldn’t not
mention those put off by the
distinctive monomer smell!),
the system requires practise,
patience and dedication to
perfect, but its redeeming
qualities far outweigh the
cons. When correctly
applied, it produces long
lasting, durable results and
can be used to create a
number of effects - great for
tip and overlay, sculpting
and even used on natural
nail overlays to strengthen
the nail.
“Acrylic is the ideal
enhancement to train with if
you only want to do one
system, as the versatility of
it allows you to treat most
clients that walk through
your door,” says Tara
Oldham, Senior Trainer at
Lena White Ltd, the UK
distributors for the OPI
brand.
Grafton International offer a complete education programme, allowing you to develop your skills all the way
through from basic level to the highest possible.
“It is probably the most
commonly applied nail
enhancement due to the fact
that it is strong, durable and
can be used to create shape
on flat, problem nails. It is
especially good for nail
biters due to its superior
adhesion qualities (although
this may vary in different
brands), and is ideal for
sculpting or forming a free
edge without a tip.”
The reason some nail
technicians have issues with
liquid and powder is that the
mix ratio of the liquid and
the powder must be just
right in order to create the
perfect bead, and produce
strong, flexible nails. Get
the consistency too wet and
the nail will break, plus
increase your client’s
chances of having an
allergic reaction or a
bacterial infection through
lifting.
Similarly, if the consistency
is too dry the enhancement
will also be prone to lifting
and flaking, and will look
bumpy, cloudy and powdery
in appearance - and your
clients won’t be impressed.
Mixing it up
So how does it work?
Liquid and powder
enhancements are formed
when a liquid monomer and
a powder polymer are
combined to form a bead.
Monomers are singular
molecules that hook
themselves together, in a
head to tail fashion, to form
long chains, known as
polymers. To kick start the
molecules into action a
chemical reaction must
occur, and this happens
when liquid meets powder,
in a process known as
polymerisation or more
commonly ‘cure’ or
‘curing.’
Once curing has begun
through the mixing of the
two products, the polymer
strands react and cross-link,
joining together not only via
head to tail, but with extra
‘arms’ to grow new chains.
These chains link to form a
rigid net-like structure,
creating a strong and
flexible working surface.
Once the mix has dried, it
forms the nail enhancement.
Different companies will
advise varying mix-ratios
for their products, but the
general trend is for a
medium-wet mix ratio. Once
curing begins, the liquid and
powder mix begins to
harden, and therefore time is
of the essence for
technicians to sculpt the
perfect nail before it sets.
To test whether or not you
have achieved the perfect
medium-wet bead, practise
the consistency on used nail
tips, before you begin to
work on actual clients. Pick
up an acrylic bead with your
brush and slowly count to
three, allowing the liquid to
make contact with all of the
powder - then place the bead
onto the tip.
The perfect bead will only
lose about 25% of its height
and diameter, and will retain
much of its original shape.
If it reduces by half in
height and almost doubles in
diameter, then it is too wet.
If it stays virtually the same
height and shape, it is too
dry.
Once you have achieved the
perfect mix, make sure you
use gentle, firm patting and
gliding motions to create the
perfect nail, rather than
brushing.
Training
It goes without saying that
in order to master the
precise technique of the
liquid and powder system,
the right training is integral
and will make all the
difference in the standard
you attain. Books and online
guides can only take you so
far on their own, and any
nail professional will tell
you that there is no
substitute for practical
experience.
A good training provider
will also offer you posttraining support, in case you
encounter problems or
questions that weren’t
covered in training - and
you inevitably will. This
could be especially useful if
you plan on working alone,
or as a mobile nail
technician, without
colleagues to turn to for
advice.

If you’re starting from
scratch, also consider what
life after your initial training
might hold - will you want
to gain a higher qualification
or go into competition nails?
Make sure you choose a
training provider who can
offer you successive courses
in wherever you might want
to take your career to next.
United Beauty, home of
Star Nails®, offers a threelevel conversion course to
liquid and powder, whether
you’re a beginner or an
advanced tech. The course
promises to teach

techniques, smile lines and
perfecting the system
application. Furthermore,
their in-house training
advisor is always on hand to
assist and answer any
application or product
related questions.
Alternatively, Grafton
International offer a
complete Education
Programme, allowing you to
develop your skills all the
way through from basic
level up to the highest
standards possible. Graftons
provide courses for those
who are new to the industry,
as well as those looking for
the opportunity to broaden
their horizons and develop
their skills to a higher level.
NSI’s education programme,
held at their own training
academy with six fully
equipped classrooms, has
courses for beginners, as
well as the continuous
development of the
professional. All NSI
Educators are highly
qualified and have a vast
amount of experience within
the industry, and as well as
their core courses, they also
offer regular seminars and
free training support days.
Finally, the Lena White
Institute of Education runs
a four-day liquid and
powder course using OPI’s
Absolute Acrylic system,
providing you with full OPI
product knowledge, infill
and re-balancing techniques,
and teaching on how to give
clients a full consultation,
amongst other skills.
Painting with
the enemy
Choosing which liquid and
powder system to work
with can be a daunting task,
as there are so many
products to choose from.
However, as well as
knowing what you do want
in your products - quality,
reliability and a good range
of colours being three, you
also need to consider what
you don’t want in a product
- and that is one that
contains MMA.
www.BeautyServe.com
Methyl Methacrylate,
known as MMA, is a
chemical substance which is
typically used to make
resins and plastics. It was
originally used in the nail
industry as a liquid
monomer, until a discovery
in the 1970s found it caused
harm to the natural nail, as
well as all manner of other
nasty side effects, including
irritation to the eyes, skin,
nose and throat and damage
to the nervous system.
United Beauty’s Fusion™
range . . . a fast selling
monomer and polymer system.
It has since been replaced in
liquid monomers by Ethyl
Methacrylate (or EMA),
which is considerably safer
to use. However, if you
believe you have bought a
product containing MMA,
you should stop using the
product immediately and
contact your supplier.
Telltale signs include a
strong and sharp smell
(sometimes even fruity) and
nails that are difficult to file.
EzFlow’s High Definition kit
contains the Primerless Monomer
as well as Acrylic Powder.
Available from
Grafton
International are
EzFlow’s A

available in seven
classic colours.

United Beauty’s Fusion™
range is a fast-setting
monomer and polymer
system that boasts many
benefits for the modern nail
technician, including selflevelling properties for easy
application, a non-yellowing
formula, and a cushioning
effect for clients whose nails
are prone to lifting. It can
also be used to protect nails
damaged from extreme
biting, and with excellent
adhesion it will not lift.
The comprehensive range
includes Fusion Plus™, a
primer-less ultra fast curing
system that is ideal for
competition work and is
recommended for
experienced nail technicians
and those wishing to speed
up client treatment times.
Also included in the range is
Fusion Colour™, which can
be custom blended to match
each client’s natural skin
tone or to create colourful
extensions. The range has
two colour collections, the
Primary Collection, which
allows you to create perfectly
natural looking nail
extensions, and the Vibrant
Collection, which has been
designed for individual use
to create a bright solid colour
and is perfect for creating
unique nail-art designs. The
collection also contains a
silver glitter that can be
added to any powder to give
extra sparkle to your client’s
nails.
EzFlow’s liquid and powder

encapsulated additives over
time to continually regenerate
the colour and strength of the
nails. The High Definition kit

dazzle. These superfine,
acrylic powders are
formulated to work with any
traditional nail liquid, and
you can choose from more
than 40 vividly coloured
powders to create permanent
nail art in the form of

The Acrylic Powder is made
by the ultra triple sifting
process, which means the
polymer is more refined and
micro-sized making the
powder easy to sculpt and
100% bubble free. Patented
optical enhancers produce a
more effective acrylic powder,
resulting in a clearer, more
transparent finished nail.

United Beauty have been making Nail Lacquer for over 15 years, and their Attitude brand has gone
from strength to strength in recent years. United Beauty explain the process of producing their high
quality professional nail lacquer.
1 United Beauty analyse the
trends for the upcoming
season - this is done about
nine months in advance. In
order to understand the colour
trends, catwalk shows and
fashion websites are closely
monitored.
2 Using nine colour solutions
and the base any colour and
nail lacquer can be mixed.
Base is a mixture of Solvents
and Bentone that are
combined to make a gel-like
formula. This formula is the
carrier for the colour, which
allows it to be worn on the
nail. Nail companies use a
range of base formulas that
have been individually
designed to bring different
benefits to the completed
Lacquer formula.

3 The colour is then created
using expertise and
experience to obtain the right
mix and colour. Any other
additives such as nutrients
and pearls and glitters are
added.
4 A draw down is then carried
out; this is used to compare
the colour to the sample that
was provided.
5 When a perfect match has
been created a ‘standard’ is
bottled and kept in the
‘library of colour’. This will
be kept as a record and can be
used to refer to at a later date
if needed.
6 A bill of materials is then
created for that particular
colour and the correct base is
selected ready for the
manufacturing process.

Why advertise with AdWords?
AdWords ads connect you with potential customers by being in the
right place and, more importantly, by engaging them at precisely
the right moment. The fact that they’re on the web, actively reading
pages and searching terms related to your product or service,
means they’re likely to be interested in what you have to offer.
How do I get started?
Please go to www.google.co.uk/adwords-testit and request a £30 free
AdWords voucher now. We will then send you an email containing
your promotional code and will explain how to set up your campaign
in as little as 15 minutes. There’s no additional spend commitment,
so this offer is risk free. Start advertising today!
Here’s the best part – you only pay when people click on your ad.
You decide what you’re willing to pay for each click and place a
limit on what you’d like to spend each day. You can also display
a variety of ad formats and even target your ads to specific
geographic locations. And you can keep a close watch on their
effectiveness with helpful online tracking tools that are easy to
use. If you need to make changes to your AdWords ads, it’s easy and
the changes take effect almost immediately.
The promotional code can only be used for AdWords accounts that are less than 14
days old. Only one promotional code per customer. Codes are only issued to business
domain email addresses. Customers must be from the UK or Ireland. The email
containing the code will be sent 1-3 business days after a valid request is submitted.

The BIG Question
What should I look for in a
Nail Trainer?
“Cost is obviously an important factor, but cheapest is not
always best. Think about what is on offer, what is included in
the price and what isn’t. Some courses include a starter kit, but
can you actually do anything with it? What does it include?
Will you have to spend money on extra product before you can
start to work? What will you learn? Are the learning targets
achievable? Are there any additional charges, like examination
fees? Does it include an assessment, to check your practical
work? What further training courses are on offer? What level
of support is included, is there a customer service help line?
Classes on professional courses should ideally be small and
personal. An introductory basic training course should cover
both theoretical and practical training.
Brenda Griffin
Director of Training &
Business Development
at LCN
Once you complete your initial training, you should be able to
get support from a well-trained customer service department.
A good training centre should be offering a variety of courses,
so that you can build up your knowledge and skills over a
period of time. Courses on offer should include assessments,
key skills workshops, nail art and advanced skills and diplomas
for the students to work towards.”
“Whatever course you choose make sure that you are fully
aware of the course content. What will you learn, what
products will you learn with, what is expected from you in
regards to course work, exams etc? The more you are taught
the more knowledge you will have in the future and better
prepared for work you will be.
Make sure that the qualification you get at the end of the course
is industry recognised and offer you a route to gaining NVQ
Qualifications.
Tara Oldham
Senior Educator for Lena
White/OPI
A good company will offer you on going support and
commitment from its education team, even if it is a friendly ear
when things aren’t going to plan or you have a problem you
just can’t get your head around. There should also be the
opportunity to take part in further training programmes that can
help you to trouble shoot your skills and enhance your
techniques.”
Helen Jones
Training Manager for United Beauty
“When learning, diversity is important so look for a company that offers training on all systems.
However, ensure that the course is not one that offers all three systems at once. As a beginner, it is
far better to concentrate on mastering one system before embarking on another.
Look for a company that trains using their own products. Nobody understands the products better
than the manufacturer!
You should ask these simple questions as a guideline when selecting your course:
“When you are booking onto a class try to speak to your
educator on the phone or in person if possible, don’t just
book through a distributor without asking some important
questions like; how long your educator has been training?
Budget education isn’t always the best education; it is more a
case of what you get for your money. What is it you will
learn on the days you are there? How many new skills will
you walk away with? Which techniques will be more
valuable to you and your business in the long run?
Samantha Biddle
It is not just a case of applying a product, it is in what way
those products can be applied. You will also need to learn the
fundamentals required by the NVQ system, and be pointed in
the right direction with business and marketing skills
required when setting up a new business.”
Global Master Educator,
Ez Flow nail systems
Mica Pinczuk
National Trainer for Supernail and Beauty Ltd
“When researching companies for products and training courses one of the best starting points is
‘how long have they been established and are they recognized as having a good reputation within
the industry?’ Word of mouth is always a good reference. Give the company a call with all the
questions that you have and ask them for advice.
Most product companies have trainers throughout the UK and will be able to put you in touch with
the Educator who is closest to you. The local Educator will discuss your needs and can tailor
accordingly to suit the individual.
Make sure that the course is certificated and is recognized by an insurance company, as this is
required for obtaining Liability Insurance.
Check that you will receive after care and backup from your Educator. Often just through talking to
an Educator you can determine if they put you at ease and are approachable, as lots of students feel
very nervous at this time.”
“A good training provider, whether it is an individual person,
small or larger company, is one who is willing to take a
technician of any level, listen to their needs and aspirations
and to nurture them to their required level. Also, to provide
different levels of training courses which are of the highest
standards possible and with Educators who have the skill,
knowledge, qualifications and vision to allow you to grow
progressively and to develop you into being the best you can
possibly be and want to be.
Jane Cook
National Training Manager,
Grafton International
Ensure you are getting value for money, comprehensive
training, an adequate amount of product to use during training
and that class sizes are no larger than eight, as this will allow
you to receive some individual attention from the Educator.”
Is the company recognised by leading beauty insurers? How helpful is your training advisor and
does she make you feel comfortable and answer all your questions? Is the trainer available to
answer questions throughout the course, after it is finished and offer ongoing technical support?
Can they help you become the nail technician you aspire to become? Do they offer an ‘Advanced
Nail Skills’ course and NVQ?”

Tooling
around
Claire Matthewman

Getting the right tools is an essential part of being a successful nail
technician. But if you’re just starting out or thinking about updating your
kit, how do you know which tools will give you that extra edge?
If you’re new to nails, then a
basic kit is a must for any
aspiring nail tech and can
usually be bought as a starter
package or created by
purchasing the tools and
implements on an individual
basis.
The Edge Nail and Beauty
Ltd have a wide range of
tools and essential
equipment available for the
mobile technician and in the
salon.
If you’re a seasoned
professional, then perhaps
you’re keen to try out the
latest tools on the market to
keep you ahead of the game,
or maybe you’re still looking
for that elusive tool to become
your very own ‘pièce de
rèsistance’! Either way, before
investing heavily in your tools,
you need to decide exactly
what it is that you are looking
for.
The best place for buying your
tools may depend on which
systems you have to offer, or
are learning to master. There is
a chance that some tools may
not be suitable for use on a
particular type of enhancement
so it is always worth doing
your research before buying,
in order to guarantee you
purchase the right equipment
for your chosen application.
Nip/Tuck
The range of tools available
for nail technicians is
extensive to say the least, but
there are some essential items
that every nail tech shouldn’t
go without.
Dappen dishes, for example
are not only useful when
applying liquid and powder
enhancements, but can also be
used to contain corrector liquid
to tidy up smile lines or to
remove excess paint for the
sidewalls of the nails. The
EzFlow Dappen Dish, from
Grafton International is a great
accessory to have for creating
Acrylic enhancements. The
porcelain dish with a cork
stopper ensures there are no
spills, no fumes - just easy
access to your liquid.
Alternatively, Sina at
Salonserve also has a
selection of open and screw
top dappen dishes to choose
from, depending on your
needs. The dishes are available
in either porcelain or glass and
can be ordered in a selection
of colours to co-ordinate with
your salon’s décor.
EzFlow’s Nail Systems’ Pro Pusher, available from Grafton, has been
specifically designed for cleaning and preparing
the nail bed without scratching.
The ibd cuticle pusher, from
Grafton International.
NSI’s new implement kit . . .
ideal if you are investing in a
number of different implements
at the same time.
The Nail Creation
Electric File, from
California Nails Ltd . . .
35,000 rpm and
variable speed control.
Nail scissors, cuticle nippers
and pushers are also among
the ‘must-have’ items for nail
technicians and manicurists,
whether they are used for
tidying up the natural nail,
preparing it for
enhancements, or even for
finishing the nails after a
manicure.
OPI’s tool collection includes
the Accunip Precision Cuticle
Nipper, which has
ergonomically correct handles
to allow for the utmost in
control. Designed specifically
for use on cuticles, the
extended, contoured edges
deliver accuracy. The nippers
also feature both a double
action spring and a bonus
single-action spring to enable
them to open fully for singleblade action with either hand.
The range also includes
innovative products such as
the Dexterity Dual-Edged Nail
Plate Cleaner, a unique
‘ambidextrous’ nail plate
cleaner, which is ideal for fine
detailing, and the DoubleDuty
Dual Sided Pusher, which
features two pusher surfaces,

Alternatively, BattenEdwards stocks a large
range of manicure/pedicure
equipment. After more than
20 years of specialising in
the supply of podiatry
instruments, they have
branched out to offer the
beauty trade everything from
nippers to drills. Within the
range, the F-80 Nail Scissors
come with a funky design to
jazz up any technician’s box.
The Manicure Dual Tool,
from Star Nails® at United
Beauty Products Ltd, is a
wonder tool, which is perfect
for both manicure and nail
extension preparation.
The rounded end is ideal for
lifting the nail fold whilst the
straight, sharper end gently
and effectively removes the
cuticle from the nail plate.
Made from stainless steel
and suitable for sterilisation,
this robust and useful little
gizmo is a salon must have.
Another option might be the
EzFlow Nail Systems’ Pro
Pusher, available from
Grafton International. This
product has been specifically
designed for cleaning and
preparing the nail bed
without scratching. Its key
features and benefits include
being double-ended for
double-duty - it keeps
cuticles in line and removes
Pterygium just by switching
ends, so your work is done
without having to sanitize
two tools. It has great
versatility and can be used
for manicures, pedicures and
all artificial nail services, and
finally, it helps to prevent
lift-off by fully prepping the
work area.
Within the ibd range of
tools, also available from
Grafton, the cuticle pusher
also has two sides with the
rounded end being perfect
for pushing back cuticles,
while the pointed end is
suitable for running around
the nail edge during gel
application.
The Edge Nail and Beauty

range of tools and essential
equipment for the mobile

For those of you looking to
invest in a number of

solutions to fulfil your every
need. In particular, NSI’s
new implement kit comes
complete with case and
comprises of one of each of
the following high quality
implements: Tip Cutter,
Cuticle Pusher, Perry
Tweezers, Curved Cuticle
Scissors and Cuticle Nipper.
Alternatively, ibd at Grafton
International recommend
using their Professional Gel
and Acrylic brushes. The Gel
Kolinsky sable brushes can
be used for gel applications
and are an oval size six.
Alternatively, Nailtiques at
Grafton International offers
start-up packages to those
who are setting up a new
business whether it’s a salon
or mobile, or for those who
are extending their existing
business offerings.
These packs include the key
professional products that a
technician would need to
perform a luxurious
manicure or pedicure, all of
which would be positioned in
a handy, compact and
visually attractive display.
Vital accessories and point of
sale merchandising items are
also integrated into the
packs.
Additionally, the Grand
Artist Oval 508 Brush from
EzFlow Nail Systems at
Grafton International is a
multipurpose size eight
brush, which is crimped at
the Ferrell making a flatter
belly while still maintaining
a crisp point for perfect
applications. The large belly
allows you to add liquid into
the working product for a
flawless finish application.
This oval brush is excellent
for creating dramatically
deep smile lines, precise
cuticle applications, fill-in
maintenance and even the
most intricate design work.

Any nail technician worth their
salt will try to maintain a high
level of hygiene throughout
their treatment and should
extend this care to their
equipment. Often questions are
raised among the nail industry
as to whether items such as
nail files should be reused
between different customers or
disposed of after single use.
Some techs prefer to store the
file along with the client’s
record card for use on the next
visit, while others offer the file
to the client after the session
for continued use at home.
Whichever method you decide
upon it is always important to
check the manufacturer’s
instructions to ensure that your
abrasive can actually be
disinfected.
In essence, there is no hard
and fast rule, but should you
choose to re-use the file,
Habia’s recently published
Code of Practice for Nail
Services advises: “For the
purpose of nail treatments,
all disinfectable surfaces
(e.g. metal re-useable
implements, re-useable
abrasives and work surfaces)
must be disinfected after
thorough cleaning between
services.”
Pablo Picasso made a valid
point when he said: “As an
artist, all I need is my paints
and brushes - and someone
to drag me away when the
canvas is done.” All nail
artists know that amazing
things can happen when they
are equipped with the right
tools. From precision
corrector brushes through to
precision nail art; a good
quality nail brush can last for
years.

Additionally, the Quick

been designed to create one
of the most brilliant shines
the nail industry has ever
seen. This buffer is great for
manicures or pedicures as
well as any artificial surface
like acrylics, gel, polish,
fibreglass and silk wraps.
Simply use the grey side to

artificial nail surface and
use the white side to buff
the nail surface to a brilliant

Grafton’s Nailtiques range

which are designed for your
client’s use at home. These

lustre, while the no-grit grey

Electric files are a source
of perpetual wonder and
seem to cause the most
controversy within UK nail
industry, however with
proper training and used
properly, an Electric File
can be a fantastic tool.
Many techs find that using
an electric file can shorten
their service time and
reduces job-related stress
on their hands, arms and
shoulders. They can be
used for a number of tasks
including back-fills,
shortening nails, shaping
enhancements, reaching
difficult areas like the
underside of nail, and
high-shine buffing.
The Jet 500 . . . one of two revolutionary new UV lamps from ibd at
Grafton International created to work with their next generation of UV Gel
and Acrylic systems.
The Nail Creation Electric
File, from California
Nails Ltd, offers 35,000
RPM and variable speed
control with both forward
and reverse directionality.
It is virtually silent and
vibration free and is
available in either blue or
pink and is supplied with a
full one-year warranty.
Light-minded
Every nail technician
knows how important the
correct type of lighting is.
Lamps that create a
‘daylight’ effect allow you
to examine your work to
ensure each nail
enhancement or polish
application is flawless.
The Ultra Slim Manicure
Lamp, from the Daylight
Company Ltd, is possibly
one of the most flexible
nail station lamps ever
created. The innovative
design of the flexible arm
means the lamp can be
adjusted for optimum
effectiveness and comfort
with an above table height
ranging from 15cm
minimum to 50cm
maximum and a horizontal
reach of 38cm. Therefore
the nail technician is in
control and can decide
upon the required intensity
of the large spread of the
even and low heat light
cast by the lamp’s ‘T2
Daylight™ Fluorescent
Tube’.
This high quality light
ensures both client and
technician see polish
colours and finishes in a
true light and nail
technicians eyes are helped
to cope with long periods
of concentrated intricate
work. The lamp comes
equipped with a strong
table clamp and stem so it
can be easily fitted to all
makes and designs of nail
station worktops.
Additionally, if you’re
looking to learn gel
enhancements then it is
time to invest in a UV
curing lamp. One of the
main things to remember
about UV lamps is that the
condition of the bulbs can
Grafton’s EzFlow Nail Systems’ Lamp It! . . . offers rapid and even curing.
greatly affect its efficiency.
Ideally, bulbs should be
changed twice every year
even if they look fine, as
they can lose up to half of
their original UV energy
within a six-month period.
Bio Sculpture’s UV lamp
is small enough to fit on
your table and yet is
designed to take both the
hands and feet with ease.
Additionally, it is fitted
with a timer to remove
guesswork out of the
curing process and
includes a removable hand
rest for client comfort.
Alternatively, ibd at
Grafton International have
created two revolutionary
UV lamps to work with
their next generation of
UV Gel and Acrylic
systems: The Jet 1000, a
single handed, spacesaving UV-only lamp that
dries any UV topcoats,
gels and acrylics, is sleek
in appearance and has a
separate timer; While, the
Jet 5000 is a two handed
lamp with a hinged top and
adjustable height for
manicures and pedicures.
This deluxe model
combines UV light, heat
and a fan to maximise
drying power, and also has
a built in timer.
Both models share one
patented feature, the ibd
parabolic reflector system.
This unique approach
ensures that all the UV
light is reflected
throughout the entire light
so there are never any
“blind” spots, which don’t
cure. The patented
reflectors also ensure that
the entire product is cured
at the same rate, which
abolishes the worst
problems of “traditional”
gels.
Another option from
Grafton is EzFlow Nail
Systems’ Lamp It!, which
offers rapid and even
curing, and which has been
specifically designed to
work with their gel it!
enhancements.
Alternatively, the new
skyLED light unit from
LCN uses a unique LED
technology. LED stands for
Light Emitting Diode,
which are extremely long
lasting and efficient little
bulbs, making them ecofriendly and economical.
Some of the advantages of
using this type of lamp
include a higher light
intensity, wider light
emitting angle and
minimal heat generation.
The compact design means
the lamp will fit on even
the smallest workstation
and is easy to keep clean.
The unit also features an
Auto-start function, to
begin the curing process as
soon as the client’s hands
are placed inside.
