PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Outraged by tragic
shootings at Sandy Hook,
Aurora and the daily toll
of gun deaths across the
nation, Brady supporters
were driven to action,
generating new momentum
and real results for the
gun violence prevention
movement across America.
Dear Friend of the Brady Campaign,
Over the past two years, it has been our privilege to join Jim and Sarah Brady in leading the Brady Campaign through a
period of new momentum and real results in the fight to prevent gun violence in America’s homes, schools and communities.
Thanks to your support and the unwavering commitment of Brady advocates nationwide, we’ve made outstanding progress
by focusing on campaigns that are changing gun laws, changing the gun industry, and changing culture across America to
help save lives and end gun violence.
With your help, our Finish The Job campaign drove legislative progress that would have been unthinkable just a few years
ago, leading to the passage of stronger gun laws in twenty-one states in 2013 alone, including the expansion of Brady
background checks in four states. Lives will be saved as a result. Together, we also marched on Capitol Hill for our National
Summit and Lobby Day in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Brady Law, the landmark legislation
which has blocked more than 2 million prohibited purchases by criminals, domestic abusers and other dangerous people.
Your continued support has helped us carry our momentum into the nation’s courtrooms as well. Attorneys for our Legal
Action Project won an unprecedented series of legal victories to reform the gun industry and challenge the laws that
lead to greater gun violence. These included a groundbreaking victory in 2012 in a New York appeals court in Williams
v. Beemiller, where the court ruled that a gun manufacturer and distributor can be held liable for supplying guns to
traffickers—the first such ruling since the passage of PLCAA, the federal gun industry immunity law.
With more than 18,000 children shot by guns in America each year, there’s no denying that unsafe access to guns is a
serious public health issue. In response, Brady merged with the Center to Prevent Youth Violence (CPYV) as we integrated
time-tested public health and safety programs like ASK (Asking Saves Kids) and Suicide Proof Your Home into our work.
These programs form a powerful strategic approach to reducing gun violence, changing the conversation about the risks
posed by the 300 million guns already in households across the nation and inspiring safer attitudes and behaviors that will
save lives.
These successes and so many more have helped drive historic growth in membership and funding, positioning Brady and its
members for even greater success in the years to come.
Thank you for your support and your faith in our work. Join us as we use the power of a united Brady to turn the tide and
create the better, safer nation that we all deserve.

THE POWER OF IMPASSIONED SUPPORTERS
Thanks to the energy and commitment of Brady supporters across the nation, Brady’s campaigns
are making a real and lasting impact on reducing gun violence through the three critical areas of
public health and safety education, policy, and legal action. Together, we’ve inspired an estimated
19 million parents to protect our children from unintentional shootings by ASKing the question, “Is
there an unlocked gun where my child plays?” Leading up to the Manchin-Toomey background check
Senate vote in 2013, we drove more than 30,000 calls to Congress to demand action and Finish the
Job by expanding Brady background checks to all gun sales. And thanks to your continued support of
the Brady Center, 2012/2013 was one of the busiest and most successful periods in the twenty-five
year history of the Legal Action Project. Time and again, Brady advocates, donors and activists have
answered the call, remaining the driving force behind our life-saving work.
Changing Culture
ASK
Today in America, one in every three households with children have
guns. At the same time, nine children and teens are shot every day
ASKINGSAVESKIDS
in gun accidents, and thousands of young people take their own lives
every year, most with a parent’s or relative’s gun. Brady’s public health
and safety campaigns are responding to this national crisis, working to create safer attitudes and
behaviors around the 300 million guns already in homes across America.
Each day, we are inspiring a new national conversation with real and honest dialogue about the
risks of guns in the home through programs like ASK (Asking Saves Kids) and Suicide Proof Your
Home, resulting in safer homes and communities nationwide. Our ASK campaign in particular
continues to grow exponentially, from one parent to another, as they ask each other the life-saving
question—“Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?”
2013 saw the development of new public service announcements on TV and radio, billboards and
hundreds of local partnerships nationwide, including the launch of yet another city and countywide “saturation campaign” in Allegheny County, PA. In 2013 we also saw an extraordinary amount
of activity around our annual ASK Day on June 21st, including numerous local and national news
stories and editorials as well as local ASK Day events with Brady Chapters and grassroots partners
in more than 25 States.
As a result of all these efforts, an estimated 19 million parents have started asking the lifesaving
question of whether there are guns where their children play, helping to protect children across the
nation from the dangers of unsafe access to guns and, undoubtedly, saving lives.

THE POWER OF IMPASSIONED SUPPORTERS
Changing Gun Laws
Our nation’s conversation about guns was forever changed by the tragic
events at Aurora and Sandy Hook. Driven by heartbreak, outrage and a
clear sense of purpose to make this the safer nation we all want, Brady
helped to mobilize millions of supporters and concerned citizens to create
legislative change and progress of historic proportions.
By mobilizing and amplifying the voice of our supporters, including dozens of new chapters, we
helped to pass stronger gun laws in twenty-one states, including four where we expanded Brady
Background Checks to all gun sales. That is extraordinary success, considering the fact that states
with expanded background checks see 38% fewer women shot to death by their intimate partners.
Together, we also drove 30,000 calls to Congress around the vote for the federal Manchin-Toomey
background check legislation in the U.S. Senate. Ultimately, it was only because of the insanely
complex Senate filibuster rules that the measure fell short, despite a bi-partisan majority. Rest
assured however, that together we have begun to turn the tide with Congress and put our elected
officials on notice, letting them know we’re watching them and that we are going to hold them
accountable to do right by the American people—and we’re not going away until we do!
2013 marked the 20-year anniversary of the passage of the original Brady Law that, through the
background check system it created, has prevented 2 million gun sales to criminals, domestic
abusers and other dangerous people. As a result, in 2013 we launched our focused, on-going
campaign to Finish the Job and expand Brady background checks to all gun sales, notably including
sales made online and at gun shows. The widely praised “Easy Peasy” ad went viral, with over half
a million views leading to tens of thousands of petition signatures in less than two months. Finish
the Job was also the theme of our highly successful national summit and lobbying day, the largest
event of its type ever held on the gun violence issue.

THE POWER OF IMPASSIONED SUPPORTERS
Changing the Gun Industry
A critical component of the Brady gun violence prevention strategy, the
Brady Center’s Legal Action Project set new milestones in 2012/2013
as we went toe-to-toe against the corporate gun lobby in America’s
courtrooms to reform the gun industry, defend stronger gun laws that save
lives, and challenge laws and regulations that contribute to gun violence.
Our attorneys won an unprecedented series of legal victories in state and federal courts,
including a groundbreaking victory in a New York appeals court in 2012 in Williams v.
Beemiller, where—for the first time the passage of PLCAA (the federal gun industry immunity
law)—the court ruled that a gun manufacturer and distributor can be held liable for supplying
guns to traffickers.
We also won precedent-setting rulings in the Supreme Courts of Kansas and Alaska, holding
that gun dealers can be held liable for supplying guns to criminals. Our attorneys helped
states and the federal government defend strong laws regulating the concealed carry of
handguns. In addition, we launched Lawyers for a Safer America, a national alliance of
lawyers and law firms that works to defend sound gun laws, challenge dangerous policies,
and reform the gun industry.

INSPIRED BY A HISTORY OF SUCCESS
On the 20th anniversary of the
Brady Law’s signing, Sarah Brady
and House Minority Leader Nancy
Pelosi reflect upon the efforts that
led to the passage of this landmark
legislation which has blocked
more than 2 million prohibited gun
purchases by criminals, domestic
abusers and other dangerous people
and reaffirm our commitment,
together, to Finish the Job.
Brady Senior National Policy
Director Brian Malte speaks at
Brady’s 2013 annual summit –
the largest gathering of its type
in history. Hundreds of Brady
advocates converged on D.C. to
participate in the conference
and to demand that Congress
pass legislation to expand Brady
background checks to ALL gun
sales, including those made
online and at gun shows.
Brady launched the Finish the Job campaign with a new web
video, “Easy Peasy,” in which a child shows how easy it is for Mr.
Bad Guy to get a gun without a background check and wonders
if Congress is “rooting for the bad guys.” The video quickly went
viral, with more than 500,000 views (and counting) and received
significant positive press in the national media.

Brady president Dan Gross testifies
before Congress alongside the parents
of gun shooting victim Trayvon Martin,
speaking out against reprehensible
Florida gun laws, like “Stand Your
Ground,” and the absurdly lax concealed
carry laws that allowed a dangerous
person like shooter George Zimmerman
to easily obtain a permit to carry a
loaded, hidden gun.

ASKINGSAVESKIDS
The ASK (Asking Saves Kids) campaign was expanded
through National ASK Day activities across the country,
including the launch of a highly successful “saturation
campaign” in Allegheny County PA as well as the
formation of dozens of new partnerships nationwide.
Across the country more than 19 million parents have
begun asking the life-saving question “Is there an
unlocked gun where my child plays?”
Grassroots volunteers from our Brady and
Million Mom March chapters helped bring
the voice of our supporters to state capitols
across the country to drive passage of stronger
gun laws in 21 states. By the end of 2013,
the number of Brady Campaign advocates
nationwide doubled, including more than 20
new chapters.
Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul
Stevens pressed Congress to take action on gun
violence at the 2012 event that launched Lawyers
for a Safer America, the Brady Center’s national
alliance of lawyers and law firms.
Attorneys for the Legal Action Project successfully
sued Nelson, Georgia for enacting a law that required
all heads of households to keep a gun in the home. The
city amended its mandatory gun ownership ordinance to
recognize a citizen’s right to not bear arms.

The Citizen Circle is the Brady Campaign & Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s major giving program. Introduced in late 2013, members
make non-event related annual fund gifts of $1,200 or more in support of our efforts to reduce gun violence through common
sense measures that promote safety in our schools, homes, and communities. Citizen Circle donors receive both one-time and
annual “Members Only” items, plus briefings from Brady staff, and exclusive access to Brady events and gatherings. At the highest
contribution levels, stakeholders are invited to engage in executive-level discussions with Brady leadership, receive prominent
recognition throughout the year, and gain VIP access to Brady’s signature events.
