Merrick Lentz Architect is a full-service Architectural and Planning firm, and has been serving the business and residential
community continuously since 1985. Our wide and varied experience allows us to maintain the highest professional and design
standards on many different types of projects. Merrick D. Lentz is the principle architect and individual responsible for the
overall design aspects prior to client approval. We at Merrick Lentz Architect work together with each client to create a finished
product that is exemplary in design and function, while strictly adhering to programmatic and budgetary requirements.
We are accustomed to providing services for projects in many out-of-state locations, and are not limited to working within the
immediate area of the office. Although a large part of our workload is focused on assembly occupancy uses such as restaurants,
we have had the privilege over the years of working on many different types of projects, including multi-family, office, retail,
medical facilities, churches, hospitality, casinos, tenant improvements, banks and custom residences. This exposure has served
the company well over the years.
Rick Lentz has many years of experience in the field of Architecture. Having graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Architecture
degree, he was able to start his career as a planner with the City of Seattle. Since starting his own successful architectural
business in 1985, he has developed an extensive portfolio, ranging in complexity and scope of work.

As-built Procedure
When field conditions are not known, we will go out and measure the parcel/ space. This gives us an accurate beginning, so that
we can design the building. Once the measurements are taken, we can go back to the office and draw the area on the computer.
This is a key part to the process.
Construction Documents
Once the permit is issued, then the construction plans are created. These plans are created in more detail than the permit
documents and include more information pertaining to the project. The additional elements assist the contractor so the project
will run smoother with less management by the architect.
Code Consulting
There are codes that every project must comply with. The complication is that many municipals have their own version of the
codes, and their own permit requirements. Because of these two hurdles, it can be very helpful to the client to have us consult
them through the process.
Permit Documents/ Expediting
Having gone through several checks with the client, the architectural plans are created to a level where they can be submitted
to the appropriate municipals. These plans are created in accordance with the applicable codes and requirements for the
specific project. During this stage we will coordinate with the needed engineers and consultants to create plans to be submitted.
We also can provide permit expediting services to our clients. This is where we submit the plans to the municipal ourselves,
which helps speed up the permitting process. It lessens the time the plans spend at the municipal so that the project can start
construction sooner.
Sustainable buildings
Designing sustainable buildings can be very important. There are a couple of reasons why the client will need to build a
sustainable building. In some cases, it is purely because they want to reduce their carbon footprint. In other cases, it is due to
the geography of the project. For any of the reasons why a client needs to have a sustainable building, we are experienced in
assisting them in that type of design.

Computer Generated Color Sketches
As technology progresses, two and three dimensional images are becoming more and more common. It helps our clients
visualize how their dream is coming together. Two dimensional diagrams are useful for floor plan layouts. Three dimensional
renderings can help the client see how it will physically look once built. It is an excellent tool during the design process. We can
place a rendering of the building in a photograph of the parcel or space to see how it will actually look. New tools like this are
constantly coming out for us to utilize to help our clients realize their vision.

Schematic Design
This is the first stage of design work. We meet with the client to get a feel for what they are looking for and envisioning for their project, whether it
is from the ground-up or a tenant-improvement. This stage is characterized by a simple drawing of the floor plan and elevations of the space. We
can also generate sketches to help verify the design is on the right track. This then becomes the template for the rest of the project, and is an
important step in the process.

Design Development
Once the schematic design of the project is completed, the project can continue to develop. This step takes the idea of the project and further
develops it into a set where the client can once again check to see if the idea is coming along in accordance to their expectations. Look at the
example of the schematic design sketch in comparison to the design development rendering. You can see that the design of this building is much for
developed and thought through.

Construction Administration
During construction, the architect can assist the contractor and client to ensure the project is built according to plan. Contractors will provide
submittals to the architect for product verification. They are also able to submit requests for information (RFI’s) for any questions they have
regarding the project. This phase may also include site visits to monitor that the progress is per the plans. During site visits, punch lists are created;
which calls attention to items that need to be fixed by the contractor. We also provide project management services, which is similar to construction
administration, but is more involved. This whole process is in place so that the project is built according to plan and that the dream of the client is
reached.
