2015 Annual Report - Volusia Flagler Family YMCA
FOR HEALTHY LIVING 1 FOR A BETTER US 2 Dear Y Supporter, The Y movement has been part of Volusia and Flagler counties for more than 97 years. In 2015 work continued that will ensure the Y’s success well into the future. As part of a larger national movement, the Y system is over 170 years old, and we are honored to continue this legacy by offering a robust array of programs and activities in the areas of Healthy Living, Youth Development and Social Responsibility. We are pleased to share with you just a few of the highlights of our impact throughout 2015. HEALTHY LIVING • In partnership with Halifax Health, two Healthy Living Centers were opened in Ormond Beach and Port Orange • The Live Your Life Well Race Series had its inaugural kickoff with 22 events throughout the year • The Volusia Flagler Y is also impacting the health and wellness of our community through our evidence-based programming including: • Diabetes Prevention • EnhanceFitness • LiveSTRONG at the YMCA • Million Hearts Blood Pressure Management • Moving for Better Balance • Dance for PD YOUTH DEVELOPMENT • 7,940 youth in our community were positively impacted through involvement in summer camp, swim lessons, afterschool care and youth sports • The Volusia Flagler Family YMCA insures that education and literacy are a focus in our youth development programs including the YMCA READS! afterschool reading program, which builds strong relationships among the community and works to close the achievement gap in reading with its intensive instructional delivery model and dedicated mentors • Our 2015 Youth In Government State Assembly Delegates had the opportunity to meet with State Senator Dorothy Hukill and participate in a mock legislative session. This program exposes students to the work of government and helps build self-esteem, public speaking skills, and team building • Our resident camp - Camp Winona - also provides the youth of our community with unique opportunities to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, and build self-confidence. In 2015, 312 children attended YMCA Camp Winona • • • • SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY More than four million dollars was pledged toward the Ormond Beach capital campaign With partners such as Brown and Brown, Root Family, Lydecker Family, Kennedy Family, ECHO and the Racing and Rec district, we continue to raise necessary funds to complete this project Through the support of annual community donors, the Y awarded $976,609 in financial assistance to more than five thousand families who benefit significantly from Y programs but may not be able to financially afford them In addition to the support of our individual and corporate donors, the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA also receives funding from United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties and the County of Volusia’s Children and Families Advisory Board More than 400 dedicated staff members work hard to deliver programs and services for our community. However, as an organization that serves more than forty seven thousand people each year, we rely on you and all members of our community to continue the Y movement. Thank you for your support in ensuring that all of our neighbors have a place to make Healthy Living part of their lifestyle and to support the continued work of strengthening our children through our Youth Development programs and that our area never loses its drive to serve those with the greatest needs among us with our work in Social Responsibility. This work cannot be done alone; thank you for helping build a better us. Rufus Johnson Chief Volunteer Officer Teresa Rand President and CEO FOR HEALTHY LIVING 3 a new vision for HEALTHLY LIVING The community has a new resource for answers to health questions. In November, Volusia Flagler Family YMCA and Halifax Health opened their first Healthy Living Center inside the Ormond Beach Family YMCA. Since then, three additional Healthy Living Centers have opened at the Port Orange, DeLand and Four Townes Family YMCAs. “Halifax Health and the YMCA are pleased to provide Healthy Living Centers for members and non-members alike. These centers provide free education and screenings - the first step in a journey of great health,” said John Guthrie, Director of Corporate Communications at Halifax Health. The new centers are spaces set aside inside the YMCA. Residents can attend any of the healthrelated seminars offered there to learn more about topics that interest them. “This year we have programs like ‘Ask the Expert’,” said Randolyn Haley, Director of Healthy Living Centers. The Expert program brings residents face-to-face with physicians from Halifax for a discussion and questions. It’s a conversation opportunity not always available during a doctor’s appointment. Another program is commonly-ordered lab tests. “The health care professional will be educating people about why those tests are ordered, what to expect, the reasons behind it, how to read those FOR HEALTHY LIVING 4 share their knowledge with the community.” results and what the doctors are typically looking “I think it’s an amazing opportunity for people for on those tests,” Haley said. “We also have programs like pharmacy medication to become more proactive in their healthcare. Dance for PD helps Parkinson’s FOR A BETTER US 5 patients connect with each other and improve movement. Million Hearts is a blood pressure selfmonitoring program. This four-month class helps people understand the importance of a heart-healthy diet and of keeping an eye on blood pressure. Janice Spencer, a YMCA member, is in the Moving for Better Balance program. “All the movements are slow and require a certain level of muscle control and strength. I also noticed that the memorizing of the forms and the sequence was helping my memory (too).” “My husband has problems walking, and his balance was much compromised, so he really needed something that was low-impact,” said member Janet Dalphonse. Janet and Bob enrolled in a Tai Chi class. “Bob is walking better now. I can see my balance improving. We both love going,” she added. Patty Gilbert joined the Diabetes Prevention Program after numerous diet failures. In eight weeks, “My doctor was really pleased with the results. She wanted to know what I was doing.” Johnson’s favorite programs are LiveSTRONG, a fitness program for cancer survivors where members FOR HEALTHY LIVING 6 have a common bond on the road to recovery, and the Y’s newest program, Healthy Weight and Your Child. In Healthy Weight and Your Child, children age 7 to 13, and parents make a commitment together. They are educated about healthy food choices and playing together. The YMCA Healthy Living Wellness Programming touches lives. “Physical activity is probably one of the most important things we can do for the community as a whole. Just getting people up and active helps benefit them spiritually, mentally and physically,” said Johnson. From left, Bev Johnson, Executive Vice President of Health Strategy and Randolyn Haley, Director of Healthy Living Centers. FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY 7 What YMCA members are saying about our programs: Diabetes Prevention Program … When I first heard about the Diabetes Prevention Program I was unsure about joining. A friend of mine went through the program and recommended I enroll. I went to my first meeting the next week. This was the best decision of my life! I had tried diets, Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem but met with no success. Now, through the Diabetes Prevention Program I have lost weight and feel better than I ever have. After only 8 weeks in the program I had a doctors appointment and my doctor was really pleased with my results. She wanted to know what I was doing and I told her about the program and she told me to keep it up, it was working. I love that you are not really restricted in what Tai Chi class … I was looking for something that would be good for balance for me and my husband, Bob. My husband has problems walking, and his balance was much compromised, so he really needed something that was low-impact. When I was reading about your Tai Chi classes for better balance, we decided to try it. When we both started the class Bob had to sit in a chair and it seemed somewhat intimidating for both us. Joann was so encouraging, telling us not to get discouraged, that it would come with time and the rewards would be good. So we continued to attend every class. She certainly was right. The moves began to become smoother and less challenging. But the best benefit has been with Bob. He finally was able to get up from his chair and incorporate the leg actions in the moves, which proved to be a little more challenging for him. Bob is a diabetic and we were also noticing his blood glucose levels lowering to a recommended number. Meanwhile, I was reading an article on the AARP web site regarding The Benefits foods you can eat. You are taught to keep track of your fat intake, and if you had a lot of fat grams at lunch, then at dinner you can cut back. This program teaches you to look at labels on food. I have also learned how important exercise is in your daily life. The instructors are absolutely great and make this class very interesting. I can’t wait to go back each week. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to improve their health. I have never felt better in my life. I sleep better at night, I have more energy and I just feel great! — Patty Gilbert of Tai Chi for Diabetics. It has so many benefits and one of them was help to lower blood glucose by removing sugar from the bloodstream and into the muscles, where it is used for fuel, which explains his lower sugar test readings. Bob is walking better now. It has also had benefits for me; I can see my balance improving. We both love going. Joann encourages Bob and praises him, which puffs out his feathers. She is a wonderful teacher and puts her heart and soul into these classes. She knows how to conduct her class with enthusiasm and encouragement for everyone. I have to mention another student, Joe, who is very good doing Tai Chi and also very helpful, sharing his positive outlook and benefits to this class. We really enjoy it and we are so glad that you have this class in your schedule. I have to tell you, it has been a wonderful experience for both of us. God Bless, — Janet Dalphonse FOR HEALTHY LIVING 8 Moving for Better Balance … I began Moving for Better Balance (MBB) about 18 months ago. I enjoyed it from the first day and continue to participate today. The initial attraction was the balance aspect. I have always felt my balance could use improvement. I do yard work and am always worried about tripping on the hose or stepping back on a rock and falling. Since MBB I still trip; the difference is that I don’t worry about it anymore because I sink instinctively to a lower center of gravity. I paddle a canoe and am very stressed when we have to pull the boat over a fallen tree after climbing on the trunk. I still don’t like having to do this but since MBB I’m better at it. Moving for Better Balance has improved my balance because all the movements are slow and require a certain level of muscle control and strength. I also noticed that the memorizing of the forms and the sequence was helping my memory. The Tai Chi movements are very detailed, and we are continually refining the position of hands, arms, legs and feet. Mind memory and muscle memory are very rewarding. I keep coming back because the whole experience is relaxing. I always feel good going to the class and very peaceful afterwards. I have volunteered to lead the class from time to time to fill in and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. It’s not for everyone, but the people who keep coming back feel the way I do. They really enjoy it and recognize the benefits. Body, Mind and Spirit, Moving for Better Balance is the whole package. — Janice E. Spencer FOR A BETTER US 9 SETTING THE PACE FOR WELLNESS Volusia Flagler Family YMCA partnered with Halifax Health for the new Live Your Life Well Series of community running events. The mutual goal? Encourage people to exercise and get healthy. The first race held in the fall of 2014, “Was great,” said YMCA Special Events Director Mica Lill. “The engagement in the community with health and wellness was what we were looking for. The fact that we engaged people of all shapes, sizes and ages was a big thing. The oldest (runners) were a couple of guys that come down here from Canada every year. They’re around 89 years-old.” The youngest runner was 3. New and experienced runners joined in. In 2015, 19 races were planned including a mud run and a color run. Lill happily goes on location at 3 a.m. to prepare for 6 a.m. races. She started running in 2007 after joining the YMCA. “I had always wanted to run a 5K. My first race I had to walk, run and barely breathe. I just got completely addicted. I don’t think I’ll stop at this point.” The race series isn’t just for individuals. Company teams can sign up and win “points” for best time or number of team members. “It promotes health and wellness inside the business. There are so many statistics that show people who are engaged in a health and wellness program miss half the days of work over those who are not.” The YMCA offers race training at many locations and YMCA membership is not required to participate in the race series. Race results and schedules are posted online at liveyourlifewellraceseries. com. Runner’s High Timing and Race Management manages the events. And race proceeds benefit local charities including the YMCA. Besides health benefits, Live Your Life Well Series has brought economic benefits here. Lill explains that runners contact the YMCA from across the country, wanting to come to Volusia County to run. They ask her for hotel and restaurant information. But it’s the look of accomplishment when people cross that finish line that says it all. “We love to see the kids finish because they go crazy over the medal and the hoopla and all the people screaming,” said Lill with a laugh. “But I think the best part is seeing the people that never thought in a million years that they would run a 5K and then you see them later in the year running a half-marathon. That’s been the most rewarding thing.” FOR A BETTER US 10 Helping the whole child YREADS! The YREADS! program provides the resources necessary to help improve the reading levels of children in kindergarten to third grade while developing greater self-esteem and social skills. Trained volunteers provide reading instruction in groups of one or two children using the SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) curriculum. Students who participate in YMCA READS! are referred by the partner schools’ principals, reading or data coaches, guidance counselors and/ or students’ teachers. Each student has been identified by a professional educator as “at-risk” and in need of additional reading skill development for successful grade level promotion. Each year, program assessments show improvements. The children’s reading levels are assessed at the beginning and throughout the program using the Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading (iReady) test. Factors such as students’ participation in the Free or Reduced Lunch or English Language Development Programs are also considered when students are referred to YMCA READS! Each child has a School Referral Form on file indicating the reading level and reason for referral. Each student enrolled in YMCA READS! is expected to receive a minimum of two one-hour individualized sessions per week with a mentor. Each student’s reading level is assessed to provide targeted instruction. Student progress is monitored quarterly through curriculum and school assessments, but the biggest measurement is by what their families have to say about the program. YMCA READS! began in August 2005 when the Florida Department of Education granted $1.5 million to the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs. The Volusia Flagler Family YMCA began the program at Turie T. Small Elementary for the 2014-2015 school year. In a 2015 survey, 100% of parents and teachers who responded found the program beneficial in improving students’ reading. FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT 11 Counting down to a … CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION YMCA CAMP WINONA It’s been nearly 100 years since Camp Winona began. If the camp could talk, it would most likely tell stories of kids in canoes, sleeping under the stars, catching bugs, learning about nature and it would probably recall every laugh from every happy child. In 1919, then General Director of the Daytona Beach YMCA, L.R. Reynolds, found a pristine spot on the edge of Lake Winona in DeLeon Springs and pitched tents there with several boys from the Y. Reynolds liked it so well that in 1920 the YMCA obtained 40 acres on Lake Winona and Camp Winona was born. The new camp would be used by the county’s three Y locations, New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach and DeLand. Camp Director Blaine Wheeler, a camper since he was a child, knows how to create a great camp experience. “I wanted to be at camp. It’s in my blood. To be part of that 100-year anniversary is what I’m looking forward to,” said Wheeler. “We are striving to make a difference in kids’ lives, to teach them and give them positive role models and positive examples. We all take a little bit of this camp magic with us. They’re going to go home with worth, values. We want to help them reach their God-given potential. We’re here to help with memories that last a lifetime.” FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT 12 12 Keeping the fire BURNING BRIGHTLY THE ROBERT L. VOGES MEMORIAL FUND The Robert L. Voges Memorial Fund is supported by individuals, families, and organizations who are committed to providing children, regardless of their financial status, an opportunity to experience the wonder of residential camp at Camp Winona. Planned estate gifts, memorial tributes, and direct contributions to this endowment fund assure that scholarships are available for years to come for deserving children in our community. These donors represent a diverse group of both old and young who have discovered that it is never too early or too late to make a long-term impact at the Y. 2015 DONORS Mr. Preston & Mrs. Lynn Root Mr. William Voges The Hippler Family Mrs. Rosemary Voges Mrs. Hailey Voges-Tropeano Mr. Robert Voges Josh Letchworth Photogrpahy Mrs. Constance Treloar Mr. James C.
