The firm has grown over the years and has seven employees working in its 8,000-sq.-ft. facility. Grover’s sons, Pat and Mike, and his grandson also work at the firm. “We are a full-service shop and can handle a wide range of jobs including: plastic injection molds; blow molds; die-cast tooling; progressive dies; tool & die repair; aerospace tooling; production machining; special machinery; APRIL, 2011 jigs; fixtures and turnkey tooling packages,” stated Pat Wilson, president. “We offer engineering and design and are not afraid to take on the tough projects that other shops avoid.” The new Fanuc EDM (the third purchased by the company) was purchased from McClain Tool & Technology and features a capacity of 23.6” x 15.7”. “McClain’s service is first class. They do business with integrity and character,” noted Wilson. “There is no learning curve on the Fanuc EDMs. This new one replaces a 10-year-old model that still maintained its original tolerances.” The ISO 9001:2008 and AS 9100B certified firm works with tool steel, carbide, carbon steel, aluminum and titanium and serves such industries as: aerospace; truck; paper; consumer goods; auto; defense and refrigeration. When asked about PTD’s 35-year history Pat Wilson stated, “Our success comes from being diversified, providing good service and focusing on our customers.” Parallel Tool & Die can be contacted at: (636) 583-8786; PO Box 622, Union MO 63084; www. paralleltoolanddie.com. 5 Mittler Receives Award at NTMA General Assembly Mike Mittler, Mittler Brothers Machine & Tool, Foristell, Missouri, was awarded the National Tooling & Machining Association’s (NTMA) most prestigious award, the L.A. Sommer Memorial Award at the NTMA General Assembly. The award was established in 1959 in honor of the Association’s first chairman. This award was created to recognize individual members for their many years of exceptional service, dedication and leadership in the industry and on behalf of the NTMA. “When we think about Mike Mittler a number of things come to mind,” stated NTMA Chairman Grady Cope. “Your frequent admonition for us to ‘sell early and sell often’ that earned you the nickname of ‘Mike the Marketing Guy,’ your passion for NASCAR racing and building race cars, and the fact that you don’t need a microphone to get people’s attention. These and many other special traits make up the Mike Mittler that NTMA is grateful to have among our leadership.” Mittler and his brother, Paul, started their company with a few notes scribbled on the back of a tool catalog. Mike Mittler has often credited his success to what he has learned through NTMA. Mittler joined the NTMA in 1986 and attended his first St. Louis Chapter meeting that year. He went on to serve as president of the St. Louis Chapter and has been active in a number of NTMA National committees and teams Above: Mike Mittler with the NTMA’s L.A. In his book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!,” Seuss heaps encouragement upon the young graduates, but warns that they will most certainly hit a snag from time to time. And, for heavens sake don’t get bogged down in that “most useless place. The Waiting Place.” According to Seuss, this spot is for people simply waiting...that’s all. You’ll recall his sing song verses talking about people not only waiting for planes, trains and buses at the station, but perhaps at their own mental station waiting for a Yes or a No or a Better Break or Second Chance. Anything that might inspire them to start moving again. One doesn’t have to be young to experience those waiting places. Anyone that’s ever been in sales will recall potential buyers that honestly needed their product or service but could never make a decision until after the election or after the first of the year or after tax season or after everyone got back from vacation. For those that have sometimes frequented the waiting places, and even for those businesspeople that like to keep charging ahead, this recession has provided some very good reasons for taking a second and third look and even waiting to make minor decisions. However, excessive worry MID-AMERICA COMMERCE & INDUSTRY about our various government regulations, taxes and the economy can ruin the enthusiasm for even small projects or for buying muchneeded equipment and machinery. “We’ll wait to see what everyone else is going to do,” can come a company slogan.” We’ve seen five recessions, three large and two small. This current downturn was unusual in that it covered so many more segments of our economy and was pretty much world-wide. Regardless of when the experts said this recession was over, our nation and most cities and states will be struggling financially for years to come. That’s the good news...these struggles. They are a cause for real optimism. Our governors and mayors are finally discarding the new math that assumed pension funds would always grow by 8% and that federal funding was guaranteed for life and that taxes could always be increased to bring in whatever monies were needed. Cities and states are reexamining their budgets and pension plans and are amazed at the real cost of some of the services and salaries they’ve been funding. APRIL, 2011 Mid America 01 31 2011.indd 1 13 2/11/11 7:36 AM Editorial ...From Previous Page allowing private contractors to take over government programs and are reducing their costs. Commentators love to talk about Congress and the President “kicking the can down the road” when they decide to wait until 2012 or 2014 to discuss even minor reductions in the entitlement programs. Although they may not realize it yet, that road has reached a dead end. And, that’s okay, too. Having your back to the wall often helps you focus on reality. Today, like it or not, U.S. citizens are part of an economics educational program in the old school of “hard knocks”. It will take time, but a growing number of Americans are belatedly realizing that the free spending party is over. We’ve often mentioned these deficit problems over the decades. Barry Goldwater ran for president in 1964 on a program to reduce government spending. But, instead of reductions, we borrowed money or printed more, added new government services and kept a majority of our citizens ignorant and happy. There are still people that believe we can solve our budget problems just by making the “rich” pay their fair share. They lament that the latest budget cuts of about 1% of the total budget are the largest in our history. That’s not true. We’ve had bigger cuts many times. But, they miss the point. This reduction might slow our debt increases, but it won’t reduce the deficit. If we need to reduce the budget by 5% or 7% or 10% to avoid defaulting on our debts, that’s what we’ll have to do to keep from joining Greece and Portugal. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., says “Unless we act soon, government OPEN HOUSE at our TULSA location May 25th & 26th, 2011 10:00am - 7:00pm Lunch provided 11am-2:00pm TULSA Open House 9511 East 55th Place Tulsa, OK 74145 (P) 918.664.6064 [email protected] SAMSUNG MACHINE TOOLS Live Demonstrations Enter to win a Samsung LCD TV Learn How KOMT Excels in Providing You with Complete, Successful Manufacturing Solutions at: www.komt.com 14 MID-AMERICA COMMERCE & INDUSTRY spending on health and retirement programs will crowd out spending on everything else, including national security. It will literally take every cent of every federal tax dollar just to pay for those programs.” Our point to all of this is that we finally have a good chance of getting the nation’s attention concerning our problems...and that’s half the battle. We can’t fight wars successfully with half the people opposed to them. The same is true when people refuse to believe the government is headed for eventual bankruptcy. When America starts turning around, if ever so slowly, and it will, that will provide a thumbs up signal for business planners. Since we don’t expect to hear a siren some afternoon giving the “all clear” sign that the recession is actually over, it’s important not to be caught in the rush from that waiting room. Back in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan faced the usual reluctance of Congress to reduce any part of our entitlement programs. They would leave that for another year or two or three. President Reagan put it quite simply. “If not us, Who? If not now, When? We think this could finally be our “Us” and “Now” time. The waiting place is no longer an option. Cory noted that the regulations are administered by the Departments of State and Treasury and can be quite complicated. This includes registration and licenses and drawings and technical data. The challenges are numerous especially for international companies, as the citizenship of employees can be a factor in who is allowed in areas (or IT systems) of a plant dealing with military parts. He encouraged anyone with questions on a particular situation to get advice and clearance from the appropriate agency.
