serving on the Board of Trustees.
The Board of Trustees also wishes to express its thanks to Trustee Khaja Moinuddin for his time to
do the RFP (request for proposal) to redo our west parking lot. Khaja’s engineering background has
assisted the library in various projects, and he is once again saving us thousands of dollars.
I hope you will join us in celebrating the main library’s 50th Anniversary, the Branch’s 25th
Anniversary and our Government Documents section (Federal and State Depository) 35th
Anniversary. We have some great programs planned for August, September and October.

Who is Sonya Crawshaw?
Honoring the Branch’s 25th Anniversary
Ms. Sonya Crawshaw was an active member of Hanover Park and the
surrounding communities. In 1973, she was elected as Hanover Park Village Clerk
and served until she was elected as Village President in 1985. She served three
terms as Village President (while holding many other offices) before retiring.
In addition to serving the community as a public official and board member of
many groups, Ms. Crawshaw dedicated much of her time to better the community
and help others. As an active participant in the Hanover Park Lions Club, she volunteered
at elementary schools and tutored as part of the “Read to Learn” adult literacy program. Lifetime
honors include a 2005 Presidential Volunteer Service Award, Citizen of the Year in Hanover Park and
Humanitarian of the Year by the Village of Hanover Park. She passed away in December 2005, but Ms.
Sonya Crawshaw lives on in the library and the surrounding community.

History of Poplar Creek
A library system is essential to most city layouts,
but Poplar Creek Public Library started out of
more than necessity to fill the city. One might
say library enthusiasts founded the Village
of Streamwood. Incorporated in 1957, the
village was carved out of farmland just east
of Elgin with a U.S. Army veteran as its leader.
Corporal Sid Cato served during the Korean
War and moved to Streamwood upon his return
home. As a man of honor and a well-connected
journalist, Cato had the resources to build a
respected library. He and his wife, Claudia, formed the
Tri-Village Organization for Improved Library Service to
gather information from neighboring libraries. Only a
decade after the village was formed, the library had its
foundation.
The first public library in Streamwood was run out of a
garage. In early 1967, the garage library was open for business nine hours
a week and had a collection of 5,000 donated volumes. Although small,
the library had a board of trustees including the notable Marlene Deuel.
Deuel had no formal librarian training at the time,
but by 1966 was Vice President of the Board. She
continued to play an integral part of the library
system in various roles. Deuel would later
pursue her Library Science Degree and retire in
1988 as the Head Librarian.
With a proper board and committee in
place, the library needed a legitimate building.
Plans were already under way on a temporary
library location, until a full-sized library could be
built. The temporary space depended largely on
the generosity of real estate developer Richard Laux.
He was developing a shopping center in downtown
Streamwood at the time and donated 4,400 sq. ft. of
store space for the library.
In the five years that followed, the library collection
tripled in size, subscribed to 85 magazine titles,
circulated vinyl records, began to circulate 8 mm film, and had enough
storytellers on staff to offer regular storytimes—a Children’s program that
remains popular to this day.

20 years. It had a seating capacity five times larger than the old facility.
From 1968 to 1979, the library expanded its programs a great deal.
It introduced a Technical Services, a Children’s Librarian and a Reference
Librarian. The library leased its first typewriter and added the Young
Adult Services department. Recognizing the value of making the library a
government depository, Deuel applied to the Federal Depository Library
Program. The following year, Poplar Creek was awarded with federal
depository status.
In 1991, what is now known as the Sonya Crawshaw Branch Library
opened, and in 2009 the main library more than doubled its size with a
major expansion and remodel. The new, modern design of the library won
first place in Library Journal’s “Top Ten New Landmark Libraries” in 2011. A
major renovation to the Sonya Crawshaw Branch Library followed in 2013.
Today, Poplar Creek Public Library continues to grow while carrying on
some of its core programs that started it all. It’s unlikely the library would
fit in a garage these days, but the library board, staff and patrons are
grateful that Sid Cato, Marlene Deuel and other founders of the library
believed in the growth and helped the Poplar Creek Public Library District
become what it is today.
In 1973, what was known as the Streamwood Public Library opened its
doors to the village of Hanover Park, which lost its own library that year.
The Streamwood Library acquired Hanover Park Library’s materials and its
patrons and changed its name to Poplar Creek Public Library.
The library soon became a popular hangout. Movie nights in the
meeting room were packed to capacity, and people had to be turned
away. It circulated 16,000 items a month, over half its collection. In
1975, a bond referendum was put before the voters of Streamwood and
Hanover Park, asking for the funding to build a new library building. The
storefront was packed so tight that excess books were stored in open
bins. The referendum passed in October. Ground breaking for the new
building would begin in the spring of 1976.
The plan was to move into a new 32,000 sq. ft. facility by the end of
summer 1977, but the referendum money would not cover everything.
Deuel applied for grant money from Cook County to cover the cost of
hiring new clerks, to staff the larger space. Local residents created a gifts
and donation committee, also known as the Friends of Poplar Creek
Public Library to raise funds and buy furnishings.
On June 1, 1978 – slightly behind schedule – the new $2 million
library opened its doors. It had the capability to house 210,000 books
and was expected to have sufficient room for the community for the next
