NWKC annual appeal 2012
ove: 1.9” From each side (X and Y)
Dear ___________,
I’ve lived with kidney disease for more than 40 years. I survived just fine most of
those four decades, but in 2010 my kidneys were on the verge of failing completely.
That’s when I was introduced to Northwest Kidney Centers and, in a way, it’s when I
was introduced to you.
As a generous donor to Northwest Kidney Centers, you make it possible for
me – and for 1,400 patients just like me all over the Puget Sound region – to continue
living a good life with kidney disease. Before I tell you my story, I want to say
thank you.
I was only 21 years old when I was diagnosed with kidney disease. For a long time,
I managed the disease through diet and exercise. I became a vegetarian, restricted
my intake of sodium, saw a naturopath and took supplements and vitamins. I also
exercised regularly, walking at least 45 minutes every day.
But when I reached my late 50s, my kidneys were failing. It was time to start
considering dialysis. Dialysis is especially difficult for someone as active and highenergy as I am. Fortunately, Northwest Kidney Centers has a location close to my
house where I was able to receive in-center dialysis for three months. They made
that time-consuming and challenging process bearable.
“I have the world’s
best ally in Northwest
Kidney Centers – and
in you. Without you, so
much of what they do
for me and for so many
others just wouldn’t
be possible.”
Then my husband, Calvin, and I took a five-day class at Northwest Kidney Centers to
prepare us for home dialysis, which gave me enormous freedom and control. We also
benefited from many of the other services Northwest Kidney Centers provides at no
cost to patients. Among the community benefits funded by your donations are:

Again, all these benefits are provided free of charge thanks to donors like you.
Northwest Kidney Centers also helped us prepare for my kidney transplant in
December 2010. Afterward, even though I was no longer using dialysis services,
they continued to help. They continued to care. For example, to accommodate my
vegetarian diet and the new food guidelines I had to follow after my transplant,
Northwest Kidney Centers’ dietitians created menus specifically for me. And the
kidney specialty pharmacy – one of very few in the entire nation – developed an easy
way to help me manage the 33 different medications that I have to take for the rest
of my life.
Your donations fund these critical community and patient benefits. You extend
and enhance the lives of people with kidney disease. You improve care through
research and fellowships. You help prevent people at high risk of kidney failure from
ever getting the disease. Today, people like us are counting on you to support these
and other critical programs and services. Please make your gift of $50, $100 or
more today, to ensure that Northwest Kidney Centers can continue to be a lifesaving resource for all of us.
Today, I live a good life with kidney disease. I have the world’s best ally in Northwest
Kidney Centers – and in you. Without you, so much of what they do for me and for so
many others just wouldn’t be possible. Once again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Glenda with 2012 Breakfast of Hope keynote
