The type of neuropathy occurring in the arms, hands, legs and feet is known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is different from peripheral arterial disease (poor circulation), which affects the blood vessels rather Edson Healthcare than the nerves. Aberhart Centre One 780-407-1443 Centre 1-780-817-5039 Hinton Healthcare Centre 780-865-3333 ext 216 or 208 Jasper (Seton) Healthcare Centre 1-780-817-5039 Northeast Community Health Centre 780-496-3351 Red Deer 49th St. Community Health Centre 403 314 1287 Vermilion Health Centre 780-853-8768 (Dietitian) Three different groups of nerves can be affected by diabetic neuropathy: • Sensory nerves, which enable people to feel pain, temperature, and other sensations • Motor nerves, which control the muscles and give them their strength and tone • Autonomic nerves, which allow the body to perform certain involuntary functions, such as sweating. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy doesn’t emerge overnight—instead, it usually develops slowly and worsens over time. Some patients have this condition long before they are diagnosed with diabetes. Having diabetes for several years may increase the likelihood of having diabetic neuropathy. The loss of sensation and other problems associated with nerve damage make a patient prone to developing skin ulcers (open sores) that can become infected and may not heal. This serious complication of diabetes can lead to loss of a foot, a leg, or even a life. Signs and Symptoms Depending on the type(s) of nerves involved, one or more signs and symptoms may be present in diabetic peripheral neuropathy. For sensory neuropathy: • Numbness or tingling in the feet • Pain or discomfort in the feet or legs—including prickly, sharp pain or burning feet For motor neuropathy: • Muscle weakness and loss of muscle tone in the feet and lower legs Wetaskiwin Hospital • Loss of balance and Care Centre • Changes in foot shape that can lead to areas of increased pressure 780 361 4276 For autonomic neuropathy: • Dry feet • Cracked skin Information taken from http://www.footphysicians.com/footankleinfo/diabetic_peripheral_neuro.htm Diabetic Nephropathy Prevention Clinic The Diabetic Nephropathy Prevention Clinic is designed to delay/prevent the onset of diabetic kidney disease and reduce other risk factors (such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure). Patients who attend the clinics will receive treatment and education related to diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol management. Patients will be seen by a Registered Nurse and a Registered Dietitian. These trained professionals will monitor treatment and help the patient develop a plan that will result in a healthier weight, glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Specialist physician services will be available at clinic sites for scheduled visits for those patients who require this enhanced level of service. Referral Needed: Yes Note: A Physician referral is requested. However, should patients, families or other health professionals inquire, the staff of the clinics will work in collaboration with them and family physicians to ensure that the patient receives appropriate service. Eligibility: Adults over the age of 18 must have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, with hypertension or proteinuria, and creatinine level most be <200. The Kidney Health Promotion Coordinator, Kim Kearns, B.A. B.Ed., has been busy organizing and promoting this new program. The purpose of Bringing Kidney Health to the Forefront is to ensure that kidney health information is available to all residents of Northern Alberta. In addition to disseminating kidney health information, Kim also presents workshop on kidney health to a variety of audiences including school age children, health professionals and seniors. You may have even seen Kim on Breakfast Television in March promoting World Kidney Day. Kim has been busy discovering the best of Northern Alberta’s beauty and hospitality while she visits satellite dialysis units, public health centres, and primary care networks in Red Deer, Fort McMurray and every where in between. In addition to presenting educational materials about kidneys and facilitating kidney health presentations, Kim networks with health care providers and the general public at various health fairs and health related conferences in Northern Alberta. These networking opportunities allow Kim to promote The Kidney Foundation of Canada and to tell people about the risk factors and issues related to kidney disease. Kim’s motto is “learn to love your kidneys”. The more people know about kidney disease risk factors and the major role the kidneys play in our overall health, the more people will become aware of how important kidneys are. Spreading the word about how to keep our kidneys healthy and the risk factors of kidney disease is not a simple task, but Kim has the education and training to be successful. More importantly, her heart is in it as she has a personal connection to kidney disease. A genetic form of kidney disease runs in Kim’s family and she lost her mother in 2005 to kidney failure. She has fist hand knowledge of the struggles involved in all five stages of kidney disease, dialysis and transplants. Page 6 Fall 2009 Kidney News and Views Currently Kim is practicing what she preaches as she checks her blood pressure daily, visits her doctor regularly, follows her diet, and exercises daily. For Kim, awareness and education are the keys to slowing down the progress of kidney disease. For individuals without kidney disease, awareness and education are the keys to prevention! Register! “Give The Gift” Dance for Life Gala Danny Arbour and Camille Norton CTV news reported that Danny Arbour, upon learning he had made the “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” Top 20, said he “screamed like a little girl!”1 Season 1 of “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” premiered on September 11, 2008, but not before a grueling audition process to find Canada’s top dancers. The show itself, a dance reality show and competition, was a challenge as the competitors had short periods of time to learn and master a range of dance styles and choreography. Arbour, considered to be one of Canada’s top ballroom dancers, went on to be in the top 10 at the competition. In addition to his debut on “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”, Danny has partnered with Camille Norton, a native of Calgary, and together they have begun to establish themselves as formidable competitors in the ballroom dance world. The pair topped or placed in the top 3 in both USA and Canadian competitions as Professional Rising Stars in Professional Latin, and more recently, they placed in the top 9 at the World Cup Open in Professional Latin. The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Northern Alberta and The Territories Branch is thrilled that Danny and Camille will present a show at our first “Give the Gift - Dance for Life “ Dance in Support of Organ Tissue Donation Awareness. 1 pthttp://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20081001/dance_ DannyArbour/20081113?s_name=dance2008&no_ads= Jim Deglau & Elena Sinelnikova We are delighted to showcase Edmontonians, Jim Deglau and Elena Sinelnikova, the 2009 Canadian Closed Adult Latin Champions at the “Give the Gift” Dance for Life Gala. Jim and Elena have been dancing for seven years, and have achieved remarkable success, something they attribute to good coaching and regular practice each week. The couple started to learning dance as adults, met and became dance partners when they were volunteer teaching assistants at the University of Alberta Dance Club. Jim and Elena are examples of extraordinary talent that, with focus and training flourished in mid-life. One does not have to start dancing as a child to enjoy its health benefits, or to achieve high levels of skill. You won’t want to miss the spectacular dance presentations by Jim and Elena. You will be inspired by their technical abilities and dance interpretations and likely will leave with the awareness that it is never to late to do something you love. In addition to performances by Danny and Camille, and Jim and Elena, the showcase will feature the dancers from two dance studios in Edmonton. Dance professionals, Chelsey Schram and Mark Weedon from Edmonton’s Arthur Murray Dance Studio, the city’s longest continuously open studio will perform, as will children from the DoDel Kids Club from Elite Dance Studio DoDel Kids Club is a unique, amateur sport/dance program where children train to compete in competitive ballroom dance. The dancers in DoDel Kids Club have been regularly featured in local and national media and the club has been recognized as offering some of the best training in Canada for aspiring competitive ballroom dancers. Coaches for DoDel Kids Club are 8 time Canadian Ballroom Dance Champions, Dominic Lacroix and Delphine Romaire. Guest instructors for the children include internationally recognized coaches and judges Jean-Marc Généreux (Montreal and from “So You Think You Can Dance, Canada”), Jane Edgett (Halifax), and Benoit Drolet (London, England). You will not want to miss the remarkable performances of these talented children or the dance professionals set to perform at the Gala. Go online today to purchase your tickets. Not only will you enjoy a fine dinner and close up, breathtaking dance performances, your participation will support the efforts of the branch to promote organ and tissue awareness and donation. Page 10 Fall 2009 Kidney News and Views The Alex Unrau Memorial Bursary Fund “2009 started as any other year, celebrations, birthdays, comings and goings. We had no idea that we would lose a piece of our hearts this year. But that’s just what happened on June 1”, reports Maria Unrau, Alex Unrau’s mom. For, on June 1, 2009 Alex died with complications related to kidney disease. Alex was born in Calgary, October 27, 1987. At an early age, Alex showed dexterity with computer game controls and by 18 months of age, he was the block champ. Alex moved to Edmonton with his family in June 2002 and graduated from McNally Composite High School in 2005. Alex aspired to work in astro-physics but acknowledged that job prospects were dim and so he turned his attentions to engineering. Alex was thrilled to be accepted into the Nano and Functional Materials Engineering program at the University of Alberta. 10 days into his first co-op term in the engineering program, Alex lost his final battle with kidney disease. To remember their son, the Unrau family has established an endowment fund at the Kidney Foundation. Mrs Unrau explains, “This fund starts with a humble sum but with a meaningful sum….it was Alex’s first and last pay cheque. The name “Alexander” means “helper of man” and Alex took this literally. He was always ready to help (except with the gardening) and gave freely of himself. We feel that Alex would have wanted to help others with kidney disease, so we elected to have his estate support other students with kidney disease in post-secondary education. Interest earnings from the “Alex Unrau Memorial Endowment and Bursary Fund will provide eligible students with $500.00 educational bursaries. This may seem a lofty goal but it really is a selfish one, for it helps our Alex live on in some way.” Throughout his short life, Alex brought out the best in people and enjoyed being with his friends. Alex loved music, playing his guitar, and jamming for hours with his friends in his “manspace.” Alex we will miss you! Would you like to make a financial gift to ensure the future sustainability of the Kidney Foundation? Is there someone you wish to pay tribute or remember? Consider establishing an Endowment Fund. A donation (minimum of $2,500) can begin a permanent investment fund (entitled “Endowment Fund”), the interest of which goes towards maintaining and sustaining current and future services offered by the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Your gift ensures that the valuable work of the Foundation will continue in the years to come. An Endowment Fund can be named in your own name or on behalf of someone, as a way of memorializing and honouring a parent, spouse, or child. Naming such a fund allows others to contribute in the person’s name. A gift may be given to the Kidney Foundation’s Endowment Fund in one single payment or in installments over a giving period. Depending on the donation amount towards the fund the donor is placed within a specific category ranging from: Founder’s Circle President’s Circle Benefactor Patron Partner Associate $100,000 $75,000 $50,000 $25,000 $15,000 $10,000 and under Your gift can support the areas where the need is the greatest or you may designate it to support research, organ and tissue donor awareness, patient services and public education. Your gift to the Endowment Fund is held in perpetuity. This means all gifts to the fund are invested and only the interest income generated from the principle will be used by the Foundation. As a donor you and other contributors to the fund will receive a tax receipt for the donation. To learn how to establish your Endowment Fund contact the Executive Director, Heidi Erisman at 780-451-6900 at [email protected]. When you establish a fund, you help make a difference by giving the gift of a lifetime. Edmonton “Give the Gift of Life” Fun Run and Walk 2009 Raises $61K! Patty passed away on Tuesday, April 14 during her short stay in the Agapé Hospice in Calgary in the final stage of her battle with pancreatic cancer. For over twenty years, Patty made a tremendous contribution to The Kidney Foundation of Canada. Patty had kidney failure, was a dialysis patient and a kidney transplant recipient twice. Her first transplant failed due to complications with her pancreas, and her second kidney transplant, a gift of life from her brother, gave Patty several more years of life. During her life with kidney disease, Patty was a dedicated volunteer with the Kidney Foundation. To name a few activities, Patty provided peer support to kidney patients, she served as chairman for the Organ Donor Awareness Committee, and she spoke at high schools, clubs, nursing homes, and medical schools. In 1995, Patty’s strong desire to provide support to other kidney patients was combined with her passion for golf, and the first Patty Read Open was held in Calgary. The golf tournament grew to include one in Edmonton, and for several years the tournaments were delivered by friends and family of Patty. Proceeds from the tournaments have gone to the Patty Read Endowment Fund. Patty’s dedication and commitment to the Foundation’s mission touched many people. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and in particular, those who have faced the challenges of living with kidney disease. Patty is missed. We did it! Kidney News and Views Fall 2009 Page 13 Thousands of people in Canada are waiting for a kidney transplant due to Living End Stage Renal Disease KIDNEY DONATION Thousands of people in Canada are waiting for a kidney transplant due to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). ESRD may be a result of a number of diseases such as Alports Disease, IgA Nephropathy, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), Glomerulonephritis, Diabetes, and Hypertension to name a few. For these individuals there are three real options that are available to help manage their disease which include: 1. Dialysis 2. Deceased Kidney Donor 3. Living kidney Donor Living kidney donation has been proven to have successful outcomes for the recipients in Canada. Living kidney donation has decreased wait times for those who have a living donor available. The living donor is an altruistic individual who has stepped forward to help his/her family member or friend manage their disease. The living donor ‘s first step in donation is have their blood group tested to determine whether they are a compatible match. In the past if the donor and recipient were not blood group compatible this would rule them out from donating. The Living Donor Paired Exchange Program (LDPE) has opened up new doors when it comes to kidney donation. If the donor is not blood group compatible with the recipient they can still donate. LDPE in a nutshell is donor swapping. Once the donor and recipient both give their consent to be a part of the program they must complete all the necessary testing and then they are entered into the registry that is managed by Canadian Blood Services. Once a match is made all persons involved are notified and we set a surgery date. This program is gaining more momentum and will be able to help many individuals living with renal disease. To participate in living donation the kidney donor needs to be in good health, must be over the age of 18 and under the age of 70. Kidney donors are required to undergo a series of blood and urine tests along with radiographic testing to ensure that kidney donation will not have negative health impact in the future. The living donor is required to consult with a nurse, social worker, psychologist, nephrologist and surgeon. A donor work-up can take as little as a few months depending on the donors health. We work as a multidisciplinary team to ensure every aspect of the donor’s health is assessed. If you are interested in living donation, LDPE program, anonymous donation and would like more information you can contact the Living Donor Coordinator Shayroz Hasham BScN RN 780-407-7749 or toll free 1-866-253-6833 [email protected] University of Alberta Hospital 1-198 Clinical Sciences Building 8440 112 Street Edmonton, AB T6G 2B7 Kidney Car Program Call 780-453-2288 Brought to you by The World Uncorked: OLD VS NEW October 17, 2009 The Fifth Annual Wine Tasting Gala Brought to you by Smooth Jazz Magic 99 Lexus of Edmonton and Crestwood Fine Wines & Spirits look forward to seeing you!
