The District Interactors Conference kicked start on 4 Dec 2015 at Lumut while the RI President visited our District 3300 on 6 Dec 2015. It was an action packed week. District Interactors Conference – Lumut , TLDM Naval Base 4-7 Dec 2015. At 6am, VP Alice, PP Chris Ng and myself were gathering at the bus stop of SMK Assunta. We have arranged a bus to ferry our 19 Interactors to the District Conference in Lumut. We scheduled to reach the Lumut at 11am and we arrived on the dot. We ensured all students registered and settled at the site before we left for KL. It was a long day for us, the Rotarians, but it was a fulfilling day. RCPJ Christmas Cheers at Glad Tidings Church for Rumah Juara 5 Dec 2015. This year Christmas Cheers has brought cheers to 100 children from the Rumah Juara in PJ and Puchong. Rumah Juara is home for orphans, abandoned and abused children. Rumah Juara is a safe home that provides for the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs of children in terms of food, clothing and shelter, academic and vocational training. This was the 3rd year that we celebrated the Christmas Cheers with Juara Home. Special thanks to Organising Chair, Datin Valerie, PP Michael Toh for sponsoring RM500 each for the ang pau for the children, PP Dr JD John for the magic show, PP Dato Kevin Yong for the muffins and all Rotarians in attendance to support the event. It was a happy morning we shared with these wonderful children of the home. Interactors Chat with RI President Ravi 6 Dec 2015. It was a very special day for the Interactors of District 3300. RI President Ravi visits Malaysia and his first stop was to SMK Assunta to meet and chat with our Interactors. The host thePeejayPost www.rotarypj.com page 2 of 19 10December2015 Issue22,RY2015-2016 venue – SMK Assunta is RCPJ sponsored Interact School. Our girls really make us proud for they have managed the event very well. The message emphasised by RI President Ravi is “No selfmade successful man”. If you are successful, aside from your hard work and persistency, it was because someone out there whom have helped you to pull through the impossible. And now, we must be that someone giving back to the society and help those in needs in return. This is what we do as a Rotarian. Am proud to be Rotarian. The same evening at 6.00pm, it was the RI President Banquet Dinner at Nexus Connexion Convention Hall at Bangsar South. We made it there at 5.15pm to have a group photo with President Ravi as this is one of the very rare occasions where we have RI President visiting us at KL. I must give a round of applauds to the District Organising Committee for a job well done on the RI President visit despite short notice. We, from RCPJ enjoyed the evening and fellowship as we were the only table left intact with all members still sitting at the table at the end of the event. This is RCPJ – Service & Fellowship. Luncheon Talk : Understanding Korea by Ernest Wong 8 Dec 2015. It was a history in the making for RCPJ when Ernest Wong, age 12 emerged as the speaker for the RCPJ luncheon talk this afternoon. Ernest is very interested on the Korean culture and lifestyle. Ernest has surprised us with his in-depth knowledge of Korea. It has been an entertaining and informative session for us as we observes how Ernest carry himself during the talk. Well done Ernest ! Next Tuesday Evening Meeting on 15 December (Tuesday) is Christmas Party. Venue at Roulette, Ara Oasis, is a fellowship dinner gathering. Start at 7.00pm, do bring a friend and a gift worth RM15 and above for fun Christmas Gift Exchange. All members, see you on 15 December 2015, 7pm at Roulette ! Sincerely, Rianne Chin Chin Wai Yee, Rianne President, Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya thePeejayPost www.rotarypj.com page 3 of 19 10December2015 Issue22,RY2015-2016 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE CHAIR’S MESSAGE DECEMBER 2015 Presidential conferences have become popular meetings for Rotarians from around the world, but the conference programs vary from year to year with each president. President Ravi has planned five unique conferences during this Rotary year, each inspired by one of the areas of focus established by The Rotary Foundation as part of its Future Vision plan: • Peace and conflict prevention and resolution: 15-16 January in Ontario, Calif. - peaceconference2016.org • Disease prevention and treatment: 19-20 February in Cannes, France- rotary-conference-cannes2016.org • Community and economic development: 27 February in Cape Town, South Africa - rotarycapetown2016.com • Literacy and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) in schools: 1113 March in Kolkata, India - rotaryteach.org/presidentialconference • WASH in Schools: 18-19 March in Pasay City, Philippines 2016RotaryPresidentialConferenceManila.org President Ravi and I will attend all five of the conferences, which are co-sponsored by Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, and we hope that Rotarians will take an active interest in supporting them, particularly the ones closest to their homes. thePeejayPost www.rotarypj.com page 4 of 19 10December2015 Issue22,RY2015-2016 These events offer opportunities to explore the issues alongside Rotary’s leaders and outside experts in the various areas of focus, as we spotlight practical approaches for Rotarians to become involved in new and effective projects. If you find any of the conferences to be of interest, which I hope you will, please consider attending one of them, or perhaps sending a representative from your club. The presidential conferences are excellent supplements to the Rotary conventions, and they are further proof that Rotary is truly Doing Good in the World all around the globe! Ravindran’s mind. “Well, working on the plantation sector, it was lonely, I wanted to make friends, and eventually the service part grows on you, what bands you together is the fun of doing community work together,” said Ravindran. Elected to head Rotary International for the 2015/2016 Ravindran speaking at the interview during his three-day visit to Malaysia. term, Ravindran, a member of the Colombo Rotary Club, started and still heads Printcare PLC, a listed company which started out doing tea packaging and has diversified into the digital realm too. “The good thing about Rotary is that we leverage on the different skills to organise ourselves. “Some are good administrators while others have the required skills for the task at hand.” “And to leverage on this, that’s why you pursue smart partnerships with corporations and other bodies. Colombo Rotary Club “They are all looking to help and that is where organisations like us come in with the contacts and organisational skills,” said Ravindran. Having just arrived from Japan the night before, Ravindran’s schedule is a full one over the next three days, as he was scheduled to meet with the Malaysian Rotary District leaders and receive briefings on the various Rotary service projects. Each Rotary district and even local Rotary clubs have their own target communities such as cataracts and preventing blindness campaigns. thePeejayPost www.rotarypj.com page 6 of 19 10December2015 Issue22,RY2015-2016 Rotary International itself, however, is focused on seeing its sole worldwide programme, the PolioPlus polio-eradication programme to ensure thorough eradication of poliomyelitis throughout the world. “Our main aim right now is to push and ensure full polio vaccination in Afghanistan and Pakistan. “Then in three years, if there are no new polio cases in that period, we can declare the project a success,” the international president said. At this moment, only smallpox has been successfully eradicated, while there have only been 68 polio cases reported all around the border area in these two countries. Although violence in the region has somewhat hampered eradication attempts, Ravindran explained that the Pakistan government with its Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the head of the country’s polio task force, was committed to the effort. “There is no price to saving children by eradicating polio – it’s a no-brainer,” said Ravindran, in addition to the potential savings over the next two to three decades which could amount to as much as RM213bil (USD50bil). Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Such savings, he explained, could be channelled into working on other diseases such as tuberculosis, AIDS or malaria. “The possibilities are endless and we have the machinery to reach out not just for polio but for other diseases too,” Ravindran said. Pointing to the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa, where the disease appeared in Nigeria’s capital, Rotary International together with various international agencies leveraged on the same polio-vaccination network to rush medical help to Lagos to help contain the outbreak.
