Adopting a pet is a great
choice. There are many
things you can do ahead
of time to make your
house dog-friendly. Here
are some basics.
• “Pet-proof” your house.
In much the same way as
parents need to childproof
their house, pet owners
need to make dangerous
items difficult to access. Things that can be
chewed on, that can splinter or break into small
pieces, should be kept off
the floor and off things
that are puppy height.
• Create a living area for
your puppy, in a comfortable spot out of the way
of foot traffic. Place its
pet bed there, along with
chew toys.
• Have your dog’s leash,
collar and other items
ready. You’ll want to
purchase these before
bringing it home.
• Set up a file among
your household papers
for your dog’s adoption
information, shot record,
registration and other
pet-related data. You also
should keep a copy of
these papers in a separate location.
• Include your new pet in
family emergency planning. If you have an
evacuation or shelter-inplace kit, add dog food,
treats and other essential

At the close of an evangelistic meeting held by D.
L. Moody, a Norwegian youth stood up to testify of
his faith in the Lord. He wanted the congregation
to know that he had been saved, but he had difficulty speaking English. Haltingly he managed to
say, “I’m up here because Jesus wants me to be a
witness. He promised that if I tell the world about
Him, He’ll tell the Father about me!”
Moody later r emarked, “That boy’s testimony
went straight to the hear t of ever yone present. ‘If
I tell the world’—yes, that’s exactly what the Bible
means when it says we must confess Christ!”
Our Lord does not want us to be silent disciples.
He encourages us to witness boldly to others about
His grace. Scripture provides eloquent proof that
we are to be vocal about our standing in Christ.
Romans 10:9 states, “Confess with your mouth the
Lord Jesus.” And verse 14 asks, “How shall they
believe in Him of whom they have not heard?”
If you love the Lor d, it’s your duty to witness to
others. Maybe all you need to say to someone is:
“Jesus means so much to me. I wish you knew
Him too!” You will be surprised what such a simple, straightforward testimony can accomplish.
Determine today to “tell the world.”

I was r eading some wor thless information recently and came upon a contest which piqued my
curiosity. While I can enjoy a well played game of
Jeopardy or an athletic contest that contains an element of drama, this is a contest to which I can relate.
I read about something called a memory contest. My
mind wandered to a world where individuals are recognized for r emembering telephone numbers, the
name of a classmate fr om fourth grade that moved
away, or the value of Pi carried out fi fty or sixty places to the right of the decimal.
Harkening back to the fi rst sentence of this column, let me assure you that my memor y is as sharp
as a tack when it comes to wor thless information.
Remembering something as important as my PIN
number or the password for a seldom used email account... well that’s another matter.
The Memory Championships. There is a worldwide competition and a domestic one. Looking over
the list of events for the USA Memor y Championships proved to be a little disappointing. Sadly lacking were events that I considered obvious:
1. Knowing where you left the car keys
2. Remembering why you went to the basement
3. Recalling why you opened the refrigerator door
4. Reciting wedding anniversaries and birthdays
5. Knowing if the front door was locked without
returning to check.
Over the years I have found the impor tance of
remembering all of these things in an instant. The
inability to recall this information can waste energy,
cause undue stress, or be downright perilous.
Ther e are some practical events, such as memorizing names and faces, until I found that no one
knows the people in the pictures or are ever likely to
meet them. The entrants memorize an unpublished
poem. That would impress people at a party if someone could identify the poem and the author . But an
unpublished poem? Snob value=0.
Having 15 minutes to memorize 200 random
words is another pressure packed event. Sophia Hu
reached 120 wor ds in 2011. That would have been
useful if the wor ds rhymed and by somebody that
had been published. No, that’s event duplication.
I liked the Speed Car ds Event which is memorizing the order of a shuf fled deck of 52 playing car ds.
In 2011, Nelson Dellis put a fresh deck into the same
order as the shuf fled one in 1 minute and thr ee seconds. Our friend Nelson str uck again in 2012 when
he memorized r ows of random numbers. After 5
minutes of memorization he got cr edit for memorizing 303 random numbers.
I mar vel over these amazing minds but I am still
left with one mor e memory question, “Nelson, do
you remember where you left the car keys?”
