Guest speaker is Capt. Chris Dollar who will talk about kayak fishing and fishing options off the beaten path. Capt. Dollar holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master’s License and is a founding member of the Chesapeake Guides Association. He’s also a member of the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America and board member of the Mason-Dixon Outdoors Writer’s Association. This should be an interesting discussion now that the trophy season has concluded. The June meeting will also host the awards ceremony for the first annual MSSA/EVAN Foundation 2012 Spring Trophy Rockfish Tournament. Come to hear the story about the winning fish—a 49-inch monster caught by William Harper. Everyone is welcome and this is the last chapter meeting before the summer break. Look forward to seeing you on June 20th. JULY 18, 2012 FISHING TRIP UPDATE Both locations are booking up. We have 2 slots on the Solomon Island boats and are currently filled on the Chesapeake Beach boat. I will need six more people before I can book another boat out of Chesapeake Beach. I do not think I can be at the June meeting so you need to send me your checks before June 30. The cut off date for booking a trip is June 30. If you ask for the Chesapeake Beach boat and we don’t have enough to book a second boat, I will return your check and email you. For those fishing out of Solomons, a group of us are meeting at Stoney’s for lunch at 1 pm. I will make a reservation for a big table. Please email me at [email protected] and let me know if you will be joining us for the best crab cakes in Maryland. I need a head count. There are two Stoney’s in Solomons. I am talking about the one on the right as you come into town. It is set out on a Pier. I will be in contact with everyone on the Solomon Island boats a few days before the trip to let you know if we will be staying out late and Croaker fishing. We are going to fish out of two places. I have booked a boat in Solomons with Greg Buckner as captain and I have booked a boat out of Chesapeake Beach with Randy Dean as captain. As the checks come in I will book additional boats. I would like to have 10 people maximum on each boat, if I get six additional checks I will book another boat. The trips will be slightly different. The Chesapeake Beach trip will be a 2-8PM trip. The trip will consist of catching live bait and then live lining for Rock. When you have limited on Rock you will go bottom fishing whereever Randy knows the bite is. Randy says that the late afternoon catch for perch, spot and croaker was very strong last year in the Choptank. The Solomons trip will be a 3pm cast off time. The first part of the trip will be live lining for Rock then we are going to try night croaker fishing if there is a bite. If the croaker bite is way off or nonexistent then we will just Rock fish, and do some bottom fishing and be back at the dock at 9PM. CAPTAIN GREG WILL MAKE THE CALL. Lee or I will call or email every one, after I hear from Greg, letting them know whether we will be fishing until 11PM or be back at dark. The costs of the trips are almost the same. It will cost an MSSA member and his or her immediate family member $60.00 (normally this would be $90.00 a person with 10 fisherman). Guests and non-MSSA members are $90.00. In addition to the cost of the trip each person will chip in $20.00 for the mates tip and fish cleaning. If you fish out of Solomons and we go croaker fishing it will cost $10.00 per person more, which I will collect on the boat. I thought Greg was very fair about the extra charge for the extra hours and FUEL. WE WILL ONLY BOOK 40 PEOPLE TOTAL FOR BOTH LOCATIONS. The space will be allocated by when I receive your check. Your check must include the $20.00 per person tip for the mate. If you have any questions about how much it will cost email me. Please start sending in your checks NOW. Last year we had people that had to be turned away. MAKE YOUR CHECKS OUT TO: MSSA, ANNAPOLIS CHAPTER. Tell me your name, address phone numbers both home and cell. Be sure I have your email address (very important). Also give me every ones name that you are booking space for. Be sure to indicate which port you want to fish from. The boat has all the fishing gear and bait you will need (no additional cost), but you may bring your own rod. Both boats have excellent gear. You need to bring your own food, drink and perhaps some goodies to share. BRING A SMALL COOLER FOR THE BOAT. SPACE IS AT A PREMIUM. Don’t forget a larger cooler for fish, a camera, and some plastic gallon bags. This is going to be a lot of fun. I have had people ask to fish in each location so I think Lee’s idea is great. MSSA SPRING TOURNAMENT 2012 Glen, Congratulations on becoming the BIG money winner and catching the largest fish this spring in the 29th Annual Championship on the Chesapeake. Our Annapolis Chapter has had a lot of success in past tournaments and we are very proud of your accomplishment this year. We cordially invite you to attend our next chapter meeting on June 20th at the Crownsville American Legion at 7:30pm so that you can share your experience with your fellow members. We will be awarding the prizes to winning participants in the Annapolis Chapter Spring Trophy Season Tournament and donating the proceeds to the EVAN Foundation. I hope that you will accept our invitation to join us and if you could bring some photghaphs of the winning fish, that would very helpful. Congratulations and Thank You. Fred Menage Secretary MSSA Annapolis Chapter MSSA ANNAPOLIS CHAPTER NEWS – SPRING 2012 The Annapolis Chapter has had a very active year so far, at the January meeting we kicked off the year with ‘Walleye’ Pete as our guest speaker. We also discussed and planned for the chapter’s annual Saltwater Expo that is held each February at the Annapolis Elk’s Lodge. This year’s event was very successful with a record number of attendees, good weather, with an excellent seminar program that included Captain’s Charlie Sisson, Chuck Fisher, Sean Welsh and Shawn Kimbro who discussed their fishing methods for saltwater fish. The Rod and Reel Combo Raffle was won by John Hull and the MSSA Scholarship Foundation benefited by donated table sales as the vendors sold their goods to the members and guests at discounted prices. The guest speaker at our February meeting was Dave Smith, MSSA Executive Director who spoke to us about current activities occurring at headquarters concerning poaching problems, water quality and pollution, upcoming fishing tournaments for this year including a small boat flounder tournament scheduled for this summer. The meeting was very good for our chapter to see what has been occurring at the top level of MSSA and has brought us closer together. The March and April meetings were used to discuss upcoming chapter activities that included the Rock On Warriors Rockfish Tournament and a day on the Chesapeake Bay for our wounded warriors from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The event had to be rescheduled from Sunday, April 22 to April 29 because of the weather. It turned out be an awesome day for fishing with an awards ceremony at the Annapolis Yacht Club with all participants receiving a plaque, t-shirt, visor, and goodie bag containing mementos and prizes for the top three fish. The Annapolis Chapter is sponsoring the 2012 EVAN FOUNDATION Spring Trophy Season Rockfish Tournament, which will run from April 21st thru May 15th which is open to all MSSA members. We sponsored the Captain’s meeting at AllTackle for the 29th Championship on the Chesapeake which the top prize was won by our chapter member, Glen Orr with a 42.10 lb striped bass. We have scheduled an offshore fishing trip targeting sea bass on Sunday, May 20th aboard the Moring Star with Captain Monty Hawkins, a long time MSSA member out of Ocean City and plans and reservations are being made for our July 18th fishing trip from Chesapeake Beach and Solomons Island for live-lining rockfish with spot and night time croaker fishing. Also we have a Annapolis Chapter Crab Feast scheduled for September 19th at Mike’s Crab House in Riva on the South River. We are in the planning stage for a Fishing Buddy Network (FBN) for the chapter members to help members set up fishing trips with each other. So far, this year has seen a very active chapter group participating in numerous activities to further our interests in saltwater fishing in our area. The weather has been very good for our endeavors on the water with a good prediction of great fishing for the coming summer and fall seasons, but we still need to stay active by addressing our problems with poachers, water pollution, safety, and youth activities. Tight Lines, Fred Menage Secretary MSSA Annapolis Chapter EVAN FOUNDATION TOURNAMENT We’d like to thank all of the chapter members who participated in the 1st Annual MSSA Annapolis Chapter / EVAN Foundation Spring Rockfish Tournament. Thanks to them, we were able to present The EVAN Foundation with a $2900.00 donation. (I believe the chapter kicked in some additional money also). We had a total of 16 fish checked in. 1st place - William Harper with a 49” fish. 2nd place - Kevin Mcmenamin with a 42” fish 3rd place - Nick Pilipauskis with a 40-1/2” fish Prizes will be awarded at the chapter meeting on June 20th. SCHOLARSHIP WRAP UP REPORT The 2011 - 2012 fund raising season wound up on May 10 with the drawing of the winner of the Sportsman’s Package Raffle, Mr. Michael Barbarino of Hanover, Maryland. Mike is a postal employee who purchased his one and only ticket from Bill Huffines, the Scholarship Foundation Representative from the Essex-Middle River Chapter, who works with Mike. I had the pleasure of delivering the many items of tackle and the photo on canvas donated by Bill Tongue of our Chapter to Mike at his home soon after his name was drawn from over 1000 tickets that had been sold to raise money for our 2012 scholarships. Mike plans to use the 3 charter trips aboard BACKDRAFT, MISS MOLLY, and with Captain John Page Williams during the remainder of this fishing year. Benefiting from the new website, a record number of applicants (39) submitted requests for assistance. Based on a rigorous evaluation of each candidate’s information, the Board determined that we could award grants to 12 students. Four scholarships were awarded to continuing college students, and eight high school seniors will receive aid as they begin their college programs in the fall. I want to thank the Annapolis Chapter members for their outstanding contributions to the Scholarship program over the past year. Special thanks go to OB (Don O’Bannon) who serves as the Chapter Rep on the Board and has devoted many hours this year to a detailed analysis of the records of the Foundation, particularly the identities and career accomplishments of the students who have received aid since 1995. Thanks also go to Dennis Marchi, who stepped up to take over the duties as Treasurer for the Board during a period of increased financial activities and administrative challenges. Across all the chapters, the countless individual donations of merchandise, time and money all contributed to the raising of over $40,000, making possible the current year grant total and allowing us to place over $10,000 in reserve as the baseline for 2013 scholarships. The 2013 fund raising drive began June 1. Please visit the website, www.mssascholarships.org, and consider making a tax-deductible credit card donation. It is simple, provides you with documentation for your tax records, and goes directly to the Foundation’s bank account. If you would like to discuss a corporate donation or a gift in memory of a loved one, please call me at 443 871 5342. Pete Abbott President MSSA Scholarship Foundation Inc. Life is short, fish often!
