Live Music Now tbc
A brilliant emerging young Cardiff based
playwright, Kit Lambert was the first winner of
Sherman Cymru’s search for new writers project,
Script Slam. His reworking of Jonathon Swift’s
Gulliver’s Travels – Gulliver was acclaimed for its
comic success in a very fine production by Hijinx
Theatre Company. Like Stoppard, he introduces a
Beckett-like quality into this stylish drama.

Live Music Now! was founded in 1977 by the late
Yehudi Menuhin to fulfil two important needs
in British musical life: - to give talented young
professional musicians performing experience at

otherwise have access to live music.

Love in Plastic by Ian Rowlands
by Tom Stoppard
“Ian Rowlands is indisputedly one of Wales’ most
interesting and exciting playwrights” David Adams.
His latest play Desire Lines was given two staged
readings at the Lark Theatre in New York before it
was produced by Sherman Cmyru at Chapter last

with an image of an actress, to find her he journeys
into the evils of society.

Observer critic Ronald Bryden called Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern Are Dead “the most brilliant debut
by a young playwright since John Arden”. Stoppard
went on to become one of the most highly
regarded and witty writers of the era. Here he turns
Hamlet on his head and puts two of Shakespeare’s
minor characters under his keen observation.

Female Transport
Crashmat Collective
Vista Theatre, University of Wales, Newport
Crashmat Collective investigates original concepts
and experiential live performance.
It is 1807. Six women convicted of petty crimes
in 19th century London battle the conditions of a
transportation voyage to Australia .
Super Pseudo is an intimate Circus-Theatre
performance that blurs the boundaries between
performer and audience. The performance provides
an insight into the restaurant staffs internal thought
processes, varying from beautiful to funny and
always unpredictable.
We are developing the show into a full dining
experience; The Riverfront is providing the
opportunity to explore the service aspect for the
first time. We invite you to join us for an evening of
food and entertainment.
This project has been directed by Anna Sandreuter
and Paul Evans. The participating collaborators for
the project are: George Fuller, Laura Moy, Sheana
Brandel, Kevin McIntosh, Verena May, Rebecca
Brynolf, Tom Elstob and Adam Cobley.
Chained like animals they are kept in a cramped
cell below deck where they discover certain truths
about society… and each other. Can these isolated women unite in order to survive
their futures? Or tear each other apart under the
gaze of the hardened men who who sail toward a
heartless uncertainty?

Circus exists in a parallel world. A place where the
extraordinary seems commonplace - where weird,
wonderful, and seemingly impossible feats of
human skill are the norm.
Mae’r syrcas yn bodoli mewn byd cyfochrog –
lle mae’r anhygoel yn gyffredin, y rhyfedd yn
rhyfeddol, a champau dynol amhosibl yn rhan o
fywyd bob dydd.
Join acrobatic performers as they enter this other
realm. Moving from dollhouse streets to life-size
rooftops, they populate a world filled with their
own dreams, hopes and memories. A world in
which everyone strives to be extraordinary.
Ymunwch â’r acrobatiaid wrth iddynt ymweld â’r
byd arall hwn. Gan symud o strydoedd miniatur i
doeon maint llawn, maen nhw’n rhan o fyd llawn
breuddwydion, gobaith ac atgofion; byd lle mae
pawb yn ymdrechu i fod yn hynod.
In this breathtaking new Welsh tour, NoFit State
abandons the Big Top and takes to the stage
with National Theatre Wales. Combining circus
and theatre in spectacular ways, Mundo Paralelo
weaves together stories that unfold amongst
swooping aerial moves and gravity defying skills.
Fel rhan o’r daith syfrdanol newydd hon, mae NoFit
yn cefnu ar y syrcas traddodiadol ac yn cymryd
i’r llwyfan gyda Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. Gan

St David’s Foundation
John Otway
The Riverfront will play host to a Medley of Music
concert in aid of St. David’s Foundation Hospice
Care. It promises to be an amazing evening for
all music lovers with Risca Male Choir, Blaenavon
Town Band, local vocalist and Pianist, Richard Harris,
together with local band Duality.
Eccentric and self-deprecating rock veteran Otway
dubbed himself rock’n’roll’s greatest failure after
many unsuccessful attempts to produce a second
hit single to follow his 1977 classic (Cor Baby, That’s
Really Free with Wild Willy Barrett). However, a mere
quarter century later, he was back in the charts
and on Top of The Pops with the wonderful disco
pastiche, Bunsen Burner and much to the joy of his
adoring and patient fans!
All of the acts enjoy a history of magnificent
performances at many prestigious events. All funds
raised will support the Foundation’s work in the
community. Every day, St David’s are caring for
around 1,000 patients with life threatening illnesses,
providing vital at home care and supporting their
families through difficult times.

Swansea City Opera - Così fan tutte
Craig Campbell
Following the success of The Barber of Seville,
Swansea City Opera make a welcome return with
a production of Mozart’s popular and uproarious
comic opera, Così fan tutte, as part of their
national tour. SCO are known for their sparkling
performances of comic opera and their Così will be
no exception.
Craig Campbell, star of BBC One’s Michael Mcintyre’s
Comedy Roadshow, is one of the most charismatic
and inventive performers on the circuit. His unique
ability to find humour in the mundane, coupled with
his own natural eccentricity makes for truly inventive
storytelling. Now an internationally acclaimed
act, Craig’s whimsical travel anecdotes never fail
to surprise.
“Comic opera was superb! A cast of
superb vocalists… If all operas were as well
delivered as this one was, I’d invest in a
pair of opera glasses today!”
Swansea Evening Post
Supposedly based on a true story, this comic tale of
deception, doubt, devotion and the twists and turns
of romantic love, sees how a cynical old man (Don
Alfonso) leads two naïve officers into a scandalous
wager, in order to prove that it is against a woman’s
nature to be faithful – ‘Così fan tutte’ – ‘all women
are alike’. As the story unfolds we see just how well
he succeeds; at first the women are not willing, but
later… well you must wait and see!
20
Beautifully staged in English with elegant classical
19th century costumes, and performed by some
of the finest singers and orchestral players in the
country, Così fan tutte contains some of Mozart’s
most ravishing music and makes for an enchanting
and hilarious evening’s entertainment - a feast for
the eyes and ears.
“An absolute delight! What a treat to hear
well trained voices effortlessly filling the
Queen’s Theatre, even when singing
pianissimo…The result was a theatre filled
with laughter… Could Rossini have asked
for more?”

Craig first appeared alongside Tony Law and Dan
Antopolski as part of comedy trio The Dinks. Their
debut Edinburgh show in 2003 was both a critical
and box office success, leading to an invitation to
perform in the Best Of Edinburgh programme in
New York.
Following another successful Edinburgh visit with
The Dinks, Craig took his first solo show to the fringe
festival. The show sold out for the entire second half
of its run and Craig was described, by the Edinburgh
Evening News, as “bringing a tale to life like a young
Billy Connelly”.
Since then, Craig has supported Rich Hall on his
international tour, and had two further successful
solo shows in Edinburgh. Once the notorious host
of Canada’s legendary Ed’s Night Party, and headline
guest on numerous Canadian TV shows such as,
Jim Carrey Live, The Dennis Miller Show and Just for
Laughs, Craig has also appeared as presenter of Sky
One’s hit series From Wimps to Warriors, recorded
Comedy Cuts (ITV2), Mitch Benn’s Musical Comedy
Show (BBC Radio 4), Out To Lunch (BBC Radio 2),
Comedy Shuffle (BBC Three), Comedy Blue and
Edinburgh and Beyond, both for the Paramount
Comedy Channel.
Most recently Craig has appeared on Russell
Howard’s Good News (BBC Three) and in another
series of Comedy Store for Comedy Central. Craig
can currently be seen all over the UK bringing strong
support to Frankie Boyle on his record breaking tour.

Present ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’
(silent film with live orchestral score)
The National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales
(NYWOW) performs Charlie Barber’s new score to
accompany a screening of one of silent cinema’s
greatest horror films, The Fall of the House of Usher. Based on a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, Jean
Epstein’s 1928 film is considered by many to be one
of the most entrancing, atmospheric and imaginative
movies of the period.
The live music, played by the 48 strong NYWOW,
brilliantly compliments the brooding gothic lyricism
of the images. Inspired by sketches for an unfinished
opera of the same title by French composer, Claude
Debussy, Charlie Barber’s spellbinding score is certain
to captivate audiences.
The critically acclaimed National Youth Wind
Orchestra of Wales is made up of the country’s
leading young wind, brass and percussion musicians. Specialising in the performance of new music, the
NYWOW has given major premieres both at home
and abroad.
Presented by Run Ragged and Theatr Iolo.
Directed by Jem Treays.
Edward works in a storage warehouse. He loves
order. Everything is wonderfully predictable. One day
the strangest thing happens and one surprise leads
to another; turning his life on its head…

Set in Ireland in 1916, the work juxtaposes the
developing love affair between two young men
with political turmoil in Ireland and the slaughter
on the Western Front – contrasting the dream of
national liberation and the search for personal
freedom. The production is staged in a slowly filling
lake in front of a waterfall, with episodes from the
book woven together through a fusion of extreme
physicality, original live music and film.

Where There’s a Will…
The Bootleg Sixties are back on tour again with their
fantastic “Sight and Sound“ show, and having rocked
The Riverfront to its very foundations last time out,
will be looking to go one better this time!
You’ve been left a share of a small fortune and
things are looking up for you. Then you realise
it’s not that simple, you have to work for it, do
something out of the ordinary to get it.
What would you do for money?
This begins with the reading of the Will of a
famous writer but the contents of the Will are more
mysterious than any of her books. Some people are
left money, others are given keys. What do the keys
mean? Will they unlock their wildest dreams or their
deepest nightmares?
Join us as the mystery unfolds…
There’ll be some new songs and new images, but
it’ll be the same brilliant evening’s entertainment.
Without doubt this is the best show of its’ kind
working in the UK today, and definitely not to be

‘Newport Stories’
The Newport Stories project encourages people to
tell a story about the city in less than 50 words and
a single photograph. The project has been created
by Ffresh – the Student Moving Image Festival of
Wales, the Newport Film School and The Riverfront
to celebrate the festival being hosted in Newport for
the first time in its 10 year history.
A number of well known Newport residents –
including the Leader of the City Council Matthew
Evans, and authors Matt Beynon Rees and Paul
Manship – have contributed stories, which are
hosted on the project’s website
newportstories.tumblr.com. Several of the stories
have also been adapted by students from the Film
School into short films, which will premiere on the
opening night of the film festival on February 8 at
The Riverfront.
Here’s your chance to see some of the best stories
and images submitted to the project, which show
Newport in all its uncensored glory. If you’d like to
submit your own story, email [email protected]

‘Bill Chambers’
Bill Chambers is fascinated by that nether world of
the pedestrian cityscape and those places that are
often forgotten, over looked or simply ignored by
people rushing by in their cars. These are places
with little or no character or human stamp. They
exist for purely functional reasons and many view
these spaces as grim places to be avoided or hurried
through. If they feature in people’s imaginations at
Bill Chambers
His latest work is based on the varied architecture
of Newport.
‘Jon Pountney’
Jon Pountney has been a professional photographer
for over 10 years and is based in Cardiff. In that time,
he’s spent his fair share of time in Newport. From
capturing gigs and Roller Derby bouts at the Newport
Centre, through to taking panto press shots here at
The Riverfront and snapping Newport’s one and only
GLC. A fun retrospective of his work here in Newport,
along with some new shots captured especially for
this exhibition.

‘SuperDragons II’
The dragons are coming! Last Summer
SuperDragons took over the City and were such
a great success, a new SuperDragons II project
is about to begin.
The chosen designs will be at
The Riverfront to view from

painted, decorated and adorned
by local artists and community
groups to create Wales’ largest
mass public appeal art event.
Newport’s SuperDragons II will
create a magical trail around the
city and is sure to capture the
imagination of both residents and
visitors alike.
