GEORGE SHEEHAN CLASSIC
Well the weathermen were right! On Friday
evening before the race, a huge storm rolled in
practically flooding Marine Park and at exactly
the time the George Sheehan Classic Kids
Races were to begin. Race director, Phil Hinck
did the prudent thing and cancelled the race
and immediately shouted “Okay, who wants
medals?”
Although disappointed the race was cancelled,
the kids happily lined up for their race medals
and the day was saved.
Above Jack Cheer and company hold up the tent to prevent the rain
causing a collapse (one tent did collapse from the sheer volume of
water).
At left, Marilyn Ryder and Joe Freeman
wait out the rain while they wait for
customers for packet pick-up. Yes, the
volunteers stayed until 8:00 p.m.
mannning packet pick-up in the rain
and dark…and, yes, runners did
brave the weather to come and pick
up their bibs and t-shirts.
Now that’s dedication!

donation to JSRC.
Sunday, May 4: Run the Hills

and efficient, which is why the town
loves this race so much. The roads
were opened up by 11:30, and by 1pm
you couldn’t tell there had been a
race with 10,000 people there just a
few hours before!
Mindy Brady said the Bahr’s 5
Miler only drew 47 people so the
organizers are thinking of changing
the date so as not to conflict with the
Thorne race, where the bulk of JSRC
runners were!

F amiliar winners at Sheehan Classic 5K
ARTICLE BY JIM ROBBINS & PENNY HINCK / PHOTOS BY LESLIE MCKERNAN
Twelve hundred and 53 (1253) road racers competed in the 21st annual
George Sheehan Classic 5K (formerly it was a five-mile race) on a course
that starts and finishes on Broad Street in Red Bank, continues onto
Bergen, Silverton, Prospect Streets then onto Harding Road where the
racers are confronted with challenging Tower Hill, on the sunny/cloudy,
breezy, warm, great-running-weather morning of June 14. This Classic was
named one of the Top 100 Road Races by Runner’s World magazine and the
Best Memorial in New Jersey by the New York Times.
Coming in first and breaking the finish-line tape held by Leslie McKernan,
and Penny Hinck, wife of director, was Andrew Brodeur of Bethesda, MD
(family lives in Brick) at a racing time of 15:18, a speedy 4:56 per mile pace
(but 6 seconds slower than his championship racing time of last year—
aging does take its toll)! Rounding out the top five male finishers who
would, along with the females, receive special awards: Brian Quilty, Brick;
Cory Smith , Philadelphia, PA; Matthew Turlip, New York, NY; Robert
Cavanaugh, West Long Branch.
“I was pretty much out in front the whole 3.1 miles,” said Brodeur, in
describing his championship performance. When asked to comment on
Tower Hill, he offered, “Last year I was unaware of it so I found it ‘tough.’ I
knew it was coming this year but still found it ‘tough.’”
Toms River’s Noel Whitall, was the female winner with a 17:46 (12th place
overall) racing time (two seconds faster than the 2013 women’s champion.
Rounding out the top five female finishers: Maeve Evans, New York, NY at
18:04 (17 overall); Tina Morrison, Washington, DC, at 18:38 (28 overall);
Jennifer Nelson, Barnegat at 18:56 (38 overall); Caitlin O’Hare, Middletown
(45 overall).
“I like the Tower Hill challenge but was worried that my leg would cramp,”
Whitall offered (she explained her injury, but this writer had trouble with
his new tape recorder and didn’t get it). I do recall her saying, “the weather
was near perfect.”
Ocean Township’s Bob Hayes, finished at 50:06 (59 seconds faster than last
year) and repeated his former comment: “I’m glad they (race committee)
included the defining element of this event: Tower Hill.”
“As long as I can function physically OK, I will plan to sign up for this
www.facebook.com/groups/jsrc1
Sheehan Classic for as long as it’s presented,” said Olie Nelson, 78, of
Farmingdale who finished at 29:57.
“I wouldn’t miss this race, Jim, it’s legendary and I enjoy reading the Sheehan quotes, each of them has profound meaning,” said Dawn Ciccone, of
Highlands who ran a 23:41, under an eight-minute mile.
Members and officers of Freehold Area Running Club were the many
workers doing their know-how duties at the finish-line area, along with
other clubs’ members and many students of the girls’ cross country team of
Middletown High School South, supervised by coach Jamie Liberti.
This event also includes The Kids’ Classics: races for 4-year-olds to 13, consisting of distances of 50 yards to a half mile and are presented the night
before at Marine Park. The kids are usually treated to cupcakes, smoothies
and balloons, and each would receive a medal. But unfortunately, the
weatherman provided a heavy downpour and cancellation was necessary.
At the starting line across from Red Bank Catholic High School and
Saint James Church, director Phil Hinck, making use of the loud speaker
system provided by Main Street Productions, and gave final instructions
to the assembled racers. Our National Anthem was sung by Maya Jacoby a
ten-year-old student going into the 5th grade in the Ranney School and by
the loud and long applause one can conclude that Maya was astoundingly
appreciated.
Michael Sheehan, one of the many offspring of Doctor George Sheehan
who was family spokesman, was introduced and here are some of his
remarks:
“ Welcome, and thank you all for coming out for the 21st running of the
George Sheehan Classic.
I first want to thank our generous sponsors for putting up the dough to
make this possible and a special thanks to Phil and Penny Hinck and all
the volunteers for organizing not just this race but races all year long that
we can all participate in. (applause)
This is Father’s day weekend. A time we give thanks to our fathers but to
also those men, those father figures and mentors that we had in our lives
that helped make a difference. My father was one of them and his great
continued on page 6

legacy will live on. But today I want to pay tribute to two other men. The first
is my brother Peter, who recently passed away from a sudden illness. Like my
father, Peter was a doctor. His specialty: diabetes. He was a doctor in the truest
sense of the word, he was a teacher of medicine. He was tirelessly educating
not only his patients but the entire medical community on how to treat and
prevent the effects of this horrible condition. And because of his work, there
are Preventative Diabetic caste clinics being set up around the country that will
help thousands. And although we are sad, we are grateful that his work that he
accomplished while he was with us will continue on and help so many.
The second man we are fortunate enough to have with us today: Mr. Elliott
Denman. He is a father figure to so many runners. The Patriarch of the Shore
running community. For the last 50-plus years Elliot has been reporting,
supporting, promoting, organizing, coaching and cheering on anything to do
with track and field. He was a member of the 1956 US Olympic team competing
in the Melbourne Olympics 50K Racewalk—(thats 50K - 31 miles, not 5K like
we are doing today), and, he applied that same endurance all these years since
then to his work promoting running. He founded the Lake Takanassee Summer
Running Series which celebrated its 50th anniversary and, even today at 80 years
old, he is leaving after today’s race to head up to NY city to report on the International track meet at Randall’s Island. Have a great race.” (much applause)
Director Hinck gave his usual loud, very loud, “Ready, Set, Go,” and the racers
were off!
“A bright sky and seasonal temperatures greeted the runners over the popular
5K course; we had a very successful race, in participation of runners, volunteers,
spectators and families thanks to our loyal and new sponsors and tremendous
support from the Sheehan family. In addition to the traditional t-shirt for
participants, all finishers this year were presented with a commemorative tote
bag, to remind them of the Doc Sheehan philosophy all year long. Continuing
a tradition, runners and volunteers were treated to a plentiful post-race picnic in
Marine Park with donations of bakery goods from Bimbo Bakeries and banana
and bottled water from Sickles Market and then a celebration at Brannigan’s.
Many thanks to the boroughs of Red Bank and Little Silver for their cooperation
and for the volunteers from school teams (including soccer and cross county
teams), local organizations (including Lunch Break and NJNG) and area running clubs (JSRC, FARC, SAC).
Thanks also to residents encouraging the runners along the course, and the
patience of area motorists who had to be detoured for the safety of our racers.
It was great to see so many enjoy this Jersey Shore Grand Prix (sponsored by
McLoone’s) series event, knowing the series supports area beneficiaries. A very
special thanks to my wife, Penny, who is the very heart of racing at the Jersey
Shore,” wrote Phil Hinck, race director, in a summarizing E-mail.
Here are other leading finishers of the memorial George Sheehan Classic, many
of whom, along with the aforementioned winners and top finishers, might agree
with these quotes attributed to the late beloved Running Doc:
“If what you did yesterday still looks big to you, you haven’t done much today.”
“It’s very hard in the beginning, to understand that the whole idea is not to beat
the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little
voice inside you that wants you to quit.”
“Sweat cleanses from the inside; it comes from places a shower will never reach.”
“Happiness is different from pleasure. Happiness has something to do with
struggling and enduring and accomplishing.”
“The true runner is a very fortunate person; he has found something in him that
is just perfect.”
“Once you have decided that winning isn’t everything, you become a winner.”
“Out on the roads there is fitness and self-discovery and the persons we were
destined to be.”
Also printed on this year’s race’s T-shirt: “I will not last forever. But I am darn
well going to know I have been here.” Last year’s T-shirt had this: “The Race is
where we keep the faith in the child, the saint and artist in each of us.”

“There are as many reasons for running as there are days in the year, years in my
life. But mostly I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint.
So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and
you will become the person you are meant to be.”
“The race still asks me what it has asked all of us: no more and no less than
everything we’ve got.”
“There will never be a day when we won’t need dedication, discipline, energy,
and the feeling that we can change things for the better.”

elmar Five-Mile Run / Johnny Cobb Memorial Run
BY PENNY HINCK
Presented by the Goodwill Hose Fire Company with the Jersey Shore Running Club
38th Annual Belmar Five Mile Run
to be held
O
July 12, 2014
n Saturday, July 12, the Borough of Belmar and the Goodwill Hose Fire Co., in collaboration with the Jersey Shore
Running Club and all the local running clubs, will present
the 38th Annual Belmar Five Mile Run. The race has a long history
at the Jersey Shore as one of the longest running road races in the
area. It has traditionally attracted some of the top runners; last year
the men’s champion was Travis Mahoney of Old Bridge in a time of
24:41 and for the women it was Sarah Cummings of Spring Lake in
28:06. This event is a not-for-profit event with all proceeds going to
help the volunteer fire company.
Along with the main Five Mile event, we offer Kids’ Races scheduled
for Friday night, July 11th, all of which have continued to become
more popular each of the last several years. There will also be a
family movie on Friday night followed by Fireworks on the beach.
All events will be held in Belmar, which is known, of course, for its
beautiful beaches and newly refurbished boardwalk.
Since 2002 the Belmar Five Mile run has been held in memory of
long-time Belmar resident, Johnny Cobb. In addition to being an
originator of the race, he had a 25-year career in the Belmar Police
Department, was a member of the Belmar Fire Dept. and was a
graduate and supporter of the St Rose School, and promoted local
sports all of his life.
Participants on race-day Saturday are treated to post race refreshments and a Health & Vendor Fair in Silver Lake Park. In addition,
the random prize drawing, which includes free beach passes to some
lucky participants, will take place during the awards ceremony. Over
$2,000 in prize money is awarded annually to overall and age group
winners. All are then invited to a Free Post Race Party and Music at
Bar Anticipation, Lake Como, following the five mile run.
Last year nearly 3000 participants in the Belmar Five events and
hundreds of volunteers made this race one of the premier racing
events at the Jersey Shore. This year the goal, with the help of the
Jersey Shore Running Club, is to attract 3500 participants.
The Belmar Five is the third event of the Jersey Shore Golden Grand
Prix, sponsored by McLoone’s, a series of races that offers awards and
prize money to overall winners and age group category winners, and
recognition to those who run all events in the series. The five 2014
events are: Spring Lake 5, George Sheehan Classic, Belmar 5, Asbury
Park 5K (August 9) & the Pier House 5K (Labor Day) in Long
Branch. Further information can be found on the series website,

Union Beach 5k binds community together
T
he second annual Union Beach 5k was held on Saturday, June 21,
2014. It was a gorgeous morning for the first official day of summer
run which had a 9 a.m. start.
Race Director Alicia Maresco and her dedicated group of community
volunteers from various local groups were busy bright and early setting
things up for the runners.
Some 600 plus runners lined up for the start. Flags were still flying halfmast in memory of union Beach Firefighter Robert Meyer who died
fighting a local fire on June 8, 2014. A few moments before the start of the
race a moment of silence was held in Firefighter Meyer’s memory.
Dawn Wilcox who was assisting Alicia gave the final instructions and the
command to start the race. The runners made their way along a course
through the town and then to a finish back at the start location.
Spirits were high as the runners made their way to the finish with many
family and friends cheering the runners at the finish. Scattered all along
the route were people with signs encouraging the runners and with signs
such as “UB Strong” and “We love UB”.

in Red Bank, N.J. The weather was near ideal for the1300 runners as
they lined up on Broad Street in downtown Red Bank.
Race Director, Phil Hinck of Monmouth Beach gave the command to start the
race. As the gun went off, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” blasted to inspire

turn and traveled through tree-lined streets before headiing back, but not
before they faced the notorious Tower Hill around the 2.5 mile mark.

National Endurance Sports Summit
coming to New Jersey
T
eam U started three years ago at Princeton University is an
intercollegiate fundraising endurance team, dedicated to supporting
worthwhile causes worldwide. It has chapters at many colleges
nationwide with students participating in many endurance activities
including running road races, cycling, mountaineering and triathlons.
The group will be hosting its first National Endurance Sports Summit
(NESS)—taking place September 18 - 22 at Princeton University.
According to Joe Benun a senior at Princeton who is one of the founders
of Team U and chief organizer of the summit, “The NESS is an event
committed to ensuring that when people think of endurance sports, they
think of social good.”
“Elevating endurance” is the theme for the Summit, showcasing the power
of endurance sports to make a difference in one’s own life through health
and empowerment, in one’s community through building camaraderie
and inspiring others, and in the world through fundraising and spreading
awareness about important causes.
In discussing the Summit, Joe exudes enthusiasm and has ambitious goals
to make it a premiere national event. Registration is open to all. The Summit
will be held over four days from Thursday through Sunday and include a
full agenda of speakers and panel discussions. The speakers are intended to
motivate and provide timely information for all levels of endurance events.
NESS already consists of over twenty impressive speakers and the list is still
growing. Speakers currently include ultrarunner Pam Reed, Pose Method
founder Dr. Nicholas Romanov, Total Immersion Swimming founder Terry
Laughlin, climber Toby Storie-Pugh, and many more. (See the full lineup at
http://elevateendurance.org/speakers.)
The registration fee covers all four days . The cost seems modest for the
caliber of presentations.
The National Endurance Sports Summit is certainly an event to place on
your calendar. Early sign ups are encouraged to get the best rate and assure
your spot, as there will be limits to the number who can participate. More

Pieces about JSRC
JSRC CLUB RACES
The Jersey Shore Running Club is
about promoting the benefits of
running. However, we are also largely
about helping the community.
All JSRC races are put on by volunteers. All of the money from the
sponsors and race fees after general
expenses goes to local charities.
As you are planning your race calendar, please continue to support your
local running clubs and local races.

can cover you from head to toe with
stylish “can’t run-without” goodies.
Items are available at Club Runs,
Events, & Meetings. You can order by
mail using the order form found on
www.jsrc.org./jsrcgear/orderform.pdf.
Just click on the button for JSRC Gear

Please email [email protected] when
mailing in your order.
RACE PIN RECYCLING
JSRC recycles those little safety pins
that we provide at no charge to you at
all the races. You know the ones you
use to attach your racing number bib
to your shirt. Rather than throw them
out and before you lose them send
your pins in an envelope to:
JSRC Pins
PO Box 7492, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702.
VOLUNTEERING
Get involved in YOUR Running
Club. Volunteer services are always
needed. Next time you don’t feel like
running, volunteer. In most cases, the
odds are that your help would
be more than welcome.
Offering to help out takes only a few
hours a month. All Members are
invited to participate, and who
knows…you may even make a few
new best friends in the process. Plus,
after volunteering (and working) for
four or more events, the beautiful
JSRC lapel pin will be yours!
Volunteer to get yours today!
If you think you’d like to help out,
contact any of the Club Officers, race
directors, or contact Mike Procopio,
our Volunteer Coordinator at:
[email protected] to volunteer.
