Patterson Investment Portfolio Manager 636-537-7839 · 400 Chesterfield Center Ste. 400 Chesterfield, MO 63017 Services Offered: What is the best part of Halloween? Choosing a costume? Going to the pumpkin patch? Carving a jack ‘o lantern? Dressing for the night out? Walking through the neighborhood? Ringing doorbells? Collecting the candy? Eating it? There is so much fun about this holiday and so much of it has changed. Costumes used to be made by the kids. We dressed up as ghosts and hobos. And then as adult professionals: firemen, nurses or football players. Years later, our mothers got the notion it was their responsibility to make our costumes. This was a new form of punishment or in other words…child abuse. We got to witness their sleepless nights as they stitched felt dinosaur costumes and tried to outdo the other moms. Then we moved on to purchasing costumes…to be followed by purchasing really expensive costumes. We have always carved pumpkins for Halloween. Pumpkins that were purchased from the grocery store I presume. This was a task for Dad growing up, but we got to watch, as he cut triangular eyes, a triangular nose, and if he was feeling artistic, a toothy grin. Now a trip to the pumpkin patch can last all day. There are petting animals and pony rides and hundreds of pumpkins. Plus now there are patterns for carving every possible kind of design into a pumpkin you can think of. I always try to carve one to match my kids’ costumes. Now the rule always used to be you had to eat dinner and wait till it got dark before you could trick or treat. Well dinner is no problem but the time change is going to cause a problem. Usually the time changes just before Halloween and it is dark by 6pm allowing kids to trick or treat and still get to bed in time to go to school the next day. But this year the time change has been pushed back a week. We do not push back the clocks · College Planning · Investment Portfolio Management · 401 (k) Rollover · Life Insurance · Retirement Plans: IRA, Simple, SEP Products Offered: · Stocks · Bonds · Mutual Funds · Variable Annuities · Certificate Of Deposits Securities Offered through Delta Equity Securities Corporation Member NASD, MSRB, SIPC this year until November 4th. So our children will be trick or treating in the twilight this year…so be ready for the doorbell to ring. Something that we forget as adults is that kids have more fun getting the candy than eating it. My kids don’t even eat it at all. They leave it lying around until we eat it!! Halloween is about making memories. So make a difference this year for the kids in our neighborhood. Keep your lights on and a bit of candy by the door. They don’t care how much or what kind. Just give them a smile and their parents a wave, because getting to that point… well that’s more than half the fun. Making you smile, that is the other half. Approved Limited Lifetime Warranty Windshield Rock Chip Repair By: Kristen Witte Having traveled the United States throughout all four seasons I have come to realize that there is nothing more beautiful than St. Louis in autumn. We are lucky enough to enjoy a long season of changing colors, usually four to six weeks depending on rainfall. First to change around mid-September are sassafras, sumac and Virginia creeper and in late September, blackgum, bittersweet, and dogwood. St. Louis peeks in color in mid-October with the multitudes of maple, ashes, oaks and hickories bursting into reds, oranges and yellows. It is this time of the year that we all need to get out and enjoy the best color anywhere in the nation. Put on your favorite sweatshirts and join me at some of my favorite spots and enjoy the local color, the cool weather and the memories. My absolute favorite is Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton IL. Over 20,000 acres of park lands overlooking the Mississippi River with absolutely breathtaking views and scenic overlooks only an hour’s drive away. There are hiking and biking trails as well as camping and fishing. There is a beautiful lodge with an abundance of Native American artifacts and a life size chessboard. It’s entertainment for day trippers or as a weekend getaway. You can even take a ferry to view the colors from the river. In the middle of the winter, it is here also that you can see the Great American Bald Eagles. If you prefer to view the fall foliage from the comfort of your car, load up the family, pack a few sandwiches and drinks, CDs with the music of your youth, and hit the road. When was the last time you drove for the sake of driving and looking out the windows? The trees along the highways of St. Louis are as abundant and as representative as you will find in the state parks. So head out to Interstate 270 in whatever direction you want…it turns into 255 and then back to 270. It circles the city of St. Louis and takes about an hour and a half, depending on traffic. (And whether or not the current budget of I-Dot and MO-Dot totaling $16 has been recovered from the respective misappropriations spent on the state flowers, better known as the orange barrel which can also be seen in its abundance on this car trip.) Another activity synonymous with watching the leaves turn is high school football. So visit your alma mater with your family if you are from the area. If not, visit my alma mater. Sit on the hillside on the grass and look at the leaves. Feel the cool breeze as the children scream with delight watching their dream team march down their field. Of course autumn never lasts long enough to suit me. But after spending time in San Antonio and Santa Monica in the fall, where the leaves do not change at all, I have learned to appreciate what we have, all the more. The colors, the cool, the winds, the hayrides and the bonfires are the best things to share about the season. So when the leaves fall at the end of the month and autumn is done…we rake them into a pile…and teach our children to jump in. Enjoy. 11 October The Highlander We Come To You! Cool mornings, warm afternoons, and leaves changing colors are my favorite things about fall. Not to mention fall parties, Halloween get-togethers, and a multitude of outdoor events to be enjoyed (pumpkin patch outings, apple picking days, winery trips, and the like). Fashion this month takes on a decidedly different face; depending on where you live, one that happily announces “transition weather” has ended and its time to break out the full-out colder weather items: cable-knit sweaters, turtlenecks and boots to name a few (though not all necessarily at the same time yet!). This month I thought I’d throw out a few ideas on what to wear to a few common events in October: weddings and outside parties. For a fall wedding, consider the time of the event and the venue (as always – this rule is not seasonal). For example, a day The Highlander October 13 October The Highlander fall fashion wedding calls for lighter colors in general, but for autumn think teal and emerald instead of spring’s yellows and pinks. Keep in mind a beautiful suit is almost always appropriate, and if you are a hat girl, go for it – there are fewer more perfect occasions to wear one. An evening wedding, if not indicated otherwise (with such wording on the invitation as ‘garden or lakeside reception) will require, naturally, something dressier. A dress is the one foolproof option; don’t overanalyze this and if you have a little black dress you love, it’s probably perfect. Do look classy and elegant; don’t show too much skin (especially if the ceremony is in a place of worship – cover shoulders if possible, and yes I’m serious). Black is appropriate for evening; white is not (it’s not worth upsetting the bride on any level – this is her day!) Don’t be afraid to dress up; personally I would rather be overdressed than underdressed any day of the week, and if nothing else it conveys to the host respectfully how important the occasion is to you; a subtle compliment likely to be remembered. For an outdoors gathering (such as a trip to a winery, in my example), the rules are far less strict and much more open to expressing individuality and fashion tastes! Anything goes, but always keep in mind the weather. No matter how fabulous your new fur-lined vest is and how badly you want to show it off, if the forecast calls for sunny skies and warm temperatures, save it for another time. Being miserable (whether too hot or cold) in your ensemble is always a fashion faux-pas and only serves to make the wearer look –gasp – like she is trying too hard. Go for something easy to appear chic effortlessly; some examples would be a great pair of ankle boots with a skirt or jeans, a lightweight ‘long & skinny’ scarf you can wear with your outfit (not a coat), or just a cute tailored blazer and a fabulous layered necklace. For all your fall events, I wish you happy shopping and happy wearing! The luxury of the sunny & crisp fall days is one that is short-lived! I've tried doing it myself at home but have to say that FT gives you the motivation and accountability you need to reach your goals. There always something going on in our lives that take us off track but the trainers at Fitness Together are like a little voices in my mind, "you can do this". After every workout session it gives me the energy and drive to go that next step. It's just been a short time (6 weeks) and already my whole body is changing. Clothing fits better, my mood is better and when I go out to eat I see things in a different way. I know my goals are going to be met - just the other day during a routine doctors visit my doctor entered the room and said, "wow you look great what have you been doing I can see it as soon as I walked in!" Everywhere I go people are asking me, what have you done? I pulled out some clothing from my New York shopping spree that I never was able to fit into that felt great! More and more we are seeing new trends when it comes to specialized spaces in the home. Kids Centers. Transitioning from school and activities to home life Managing the mountains of school supplies and sports equipment that come through the door with the kids at the end of the day (and often don’t make it much further into the house) can be a daunting challenge. Solution? Homeowners are expanding on the concept of the mud room to create “staging areas” for the kids, complete with personal areas for each child in the family for the storage of bags, coats, boots and more. Some parents are even providing lockers for each youngster to help keep the clutter – and school supplies in particular – contained and close at hand for the morning departure. Add counter space for activities and craft projects, complete with built-in sinks and you’ve got a multi-functional space that keeps kids organized and the household running that much more smoothly. Extending for an extended family. Grandparent suites accommodate changing lifestyles As people are living longer, it has become more and more common for grandparents to live in their kid’s homes. An emerging design as a result, is the integration of the lifestyles of these new/older householders into the existing fabric of the home. Today’s version of the self-contained in-law suite provides for ease of use by older residents without sacrificing design values. Remodeling to provide for freeflowing ground floor plans with “comfort height” amenities, independent HVAC systems and state-of-the-art electronic communication all combine to create spaces conducive to independent living while maintaining a close connection to the rest of the family. Sweet retreat. Master suites meld the functional with the indulgent Heads of households are also creating special places of their own where recharging to take charge of the day means spaces that meld practicality with pleasure. In the new master suite, privacy and sanctuary are affordable luxuries, with features like wet bars, parlors, fireplaces, jetted tubs and steam showers joining forces with expansive boutique style walk-in closets, adjoining studies, dual sinks and separate bath, shower and dressing facilities to ensure that daily chores and necessities are equally graciously accommodated. Storage solutions. Organization key to making specialized spaces work The common theme in the success of these and other purpose-built spaces is in the way they address the ongoing challenge of storage. Those closets in the master suite conceal a host of shelves, rods, drawers and cubbies in which to neatly tuck and fold away every conceivable garment and accessory. Master baths offer cleverly concealed cabinets for endless quantities of essential bath items. Grandparent suites keep counters and closet shelves beneath arm-stretch distance. And that locker-room/mud room space for the kids quite simply has to have a shelf, a cupboard, a nook, a hook and a cranny for every conceivable shape and size of object. Integrating extensive (and stylish) storage is becoming a core component of the most successful remodeling schemes. Tailoring storage to the functions of specialized spaces is the key to this new approach of organizing and enjoying everyday life.
