Students must organize their schedule accordingly. Homework One assignment per class due at the following session. Mid-term exams, final exams, projects Our school runs on a trimester system, therefore mid-term and final exams take place every five to six weeks. There are three trimesters in the school year. Exams and projects are evaluated and returned to the student for perusal. Grade reports and year-end decision At the end of each trimester, a grade report is sent by post to the student. The grade report for the last trimester of the school year contains a decision concerning passage, classes that will need to be repeated, or exclusion from further study. Passage The average grade of 12/20 and a complete portfolio are required, as well as an instrumental level considered to be sufficient (evaluation at the end of the first year, audition at the end of third year). The number of absences allowed should not be exceeded. Repetition of classes Provides an opportunity to redo all or part of the classes in a given school year. Repetition may be granted upon request, and depending on availability. It is only possible to repeat once. Exclusion May be applied in the case of insufficient results obtained during repetition of a course, or in flagrant cases of insufficient work, or non-compliance with the school rules. Pedagogical material Most academic supplies (course material, homework, and exercise sheets) at the International Music Educators of Paris are included in the fees for each school year and are directly supplied to each student. These materials are rigorously protected by copyright laws and may not be distributed or exploited in any manner whatsoever. Instrumental exams and juries Students will demonstrate their instrumental progress at regular intervals. This may occur during concerts that are organized several times a year by IMEP in a Parisian jazz club, or during instrumental juries in front of members of the teaching staff. Such juries will be graded and are open to fellow students and the public. They are designed to help the student become accustomed to performing in a group setting in front of an attentive audience. 9 DIPLOMA Attesting to a complete musical program of study, the Diploma of the International Music Educators of Paris (*) is delivered to students who have successfully completed one the complete cycle of study. Diploma candidates are subject to the following requirements: - having obtained a cumulative annual grade average in all projects, theoretic exams, and instrumental performances equaling or surpassing 12/20; - having passed successfully all exams and completed all required projects during the years of scholarship; - demonstrating proficiency on their instrument in front of a jury. Each year, the diploma ceremony is presided by a renowned Jazz musician. (*) IMEP’s diploma is not officially recognized by the French administration CERTIFICATES • End of Studies Certificate Students who have completed the professional program of study (Elementary 1 to Superior 2) but do not show the results required for the diploma may obtain a certificate attesting to their completion of the program of study. Certificate candidates will need to have obtained a cumulative annual grade average of no less than 10/20 in each non-elective discipline. • End of Cycle Certificate Students who have completed the specialized program of study (Elementary 1 to Intermediate) are entitled to request an End of Cycle Certificate. Certificate candidates will need to have obtained a cumulative annual grade average during the 3rd year of no less than 12/20 in each non-elective discipline. Such Certificate will not be delivered if requested later than two years after student’s departure from the school. FURTHER STUDIES IN THE USA IMEP is an academic institution with an international dimension. Some of our students continue their musical studies in the United States and succeed in making a career in music overseas. The US government allows a non-US citizen after obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree to remain in the United States for a certain amount of time to gain professional experience after graduation (practical training). The stay can be extended when economic activity is created. Admission to an American university is a process than can take anywhere from 5 to 8 months. The whole procedure can involve: scholarship and financial aid requests, formalizing the application, translation and transfer of grade reports and academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, English language tests or equivalencies, and immigration formalities. Help and information about these procedures may be obtained from our secretary at the IMEP office. Some of the universities often chosen by our students for further study are: The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music (New York), Berklee College of Music (Boston)… 10 GENERAL INFORMATION School year calendar Classes start at the end of September or beginning of October. Each trimester is approximately 10 weeks long. School holidays roughly follow the French school vacations for Paris: 1 or 2 weeks in November, 2 weeks for Christmas, 2-week winter break in February, 2-week spring break in April. The school year calendar is posted on the school’s website: www.imep.pro. Documentation and information services: - information by telephone (+33(0)1 46 04 90 87); - school catalogue available in print or on-line; - consultations in person (by appointment only); - certificates, attestations and administrative or scholastic advice. All teachers provide individual contact hours for students. They are announced at the beginning of each school year. Information hours A telephone information service is open during the school year on weekdays from 11am to 3pm (and closed during term breaks and summer vacation). During term breaks and summer holidays the information services are available only by e-mail or post. Reduced fares on public transportation Students wishing to apply for a reduced rate on the public transport system should obtain the necessary forms at their local train (SNCF) or metro station (RATP/Imagine-R). A copy of the school’s certificate of matriculation should accompany the student rate request. Continuing education In certain cases, full-time working persons can apply for French Continuing Education Schemes by contacting the corresponding Adult Education organization pertaining to the sector and type of previous employment. To be taken into consideration, the dossier must be presented to the school during the third trimester of the school year preceding the beginning of classes. The school does not systematically accept all Continuing Education dossiers, even those validated by an Adult Education organization. Whether a dossier is accepted depends upon criteria based on the individual student's audition level or scholastic record and remains an exceptional procedure that is decided upon on a case by case basis by the council of professors. Decisions by the council are irrevocable. Attestation of studies Students may ask for an attestation of studies (different from the diploma and certificates) no later than five years after their departures from the school. Uncompleted years will not be taken into account. 11 FOREIGN STUDENTS: PRACTICAL INFORMATION Visa Students who are citizens of an EU member country do not need a visa to enroll at IMEP. All others must contact the French consulate where they reside to request the necessary information on the procedure to obtain a student visa and Resident Card. Please note that delays required for getting a visa can be very long. Non-EU students Students who are not citizens of an EU member country should choose Early Registration because of the delays involved in applying for a visa and in finding lodgings in the greater Paris region. Each registered student receives a Certificate of Matriculation (necessary to obtain a visa). Language Classes are held in French, with brief English translations available when necessary. Perfect fluency in French is not necessary but students should have a sufficient understanding of French to be able to follow the courses. Private lessons can be held in English or in another language common to both parties. Payment Payment for the total amount of tuition, pedagogic material, and registration fees is due upon registration. All payments are to be made by check (or bank transfer) only. Bank charges that may apply to bank transfers or checks originating in foreign countries will be at the expense of the student. Once registration has taken place, no reimbursement is possible. The program of study is determined as a result of the entry exam and initial audition. Housing The school does not provide lodging. It is necessary to have sufficient funds to live and to maintain housing in the greater Paris region. We emphasize that finding housing in Paris can take a great deal of time, especially for foreigners, as lodgers expect proof of important financial guarantees before agreeing to offer a lease. It is possible to find a “maid's room” in Paris at around 400 to 500 euros per month. Students who play drums or wind instruments should take particular care in finding the right type of housing, in order to be able to practice their instrument without bothering the neighbors. An apartment in the suburbs can be more appropriate and public transportation is well-established and reasonably priced. Working permit Please also note that foreigners may work in France under very strict conditions depending on the country of residence. Students who intend to work in France should anticipate and contact the French authorities in advance. 12 SCHOOL REGULATIONS Absences Excessive absenteeism (more than three absences during the school year) can be reason for non-passage or exclusion from school. In Ensemble classes no unexcused absence by any participant will be tolerated. In order to be able to maintain a satisfactory working environment with a group’s complete instrumentation, instrumentalists who are unable to attend are responsible for sending a substitute of similar musical aptitude. Punctuality Students must observe perfect punctuality in all courses and activities organized by the school. Excessive tardiness can result in exclusion from the following school year. Due dates for homework assignments and projects are to be observed rigorously. Non-compliance with demanded due dates will be sanctioned by the professors. Discipline and general behavior The school welcomes adult musicians. Behavior disrupting the normal functioning of classes will not be tolerated. Acts of indiscipline may result in expulsion. Conduct The students are expected to respect general rules of conduct concerning cleanliness and hygiene around the school buildings, furniture and equipment. - It is forbidden to smoke within the school and in the shared areas immediately surrounding the school (private co-proprieties). - Eating and drinking (excepting plain water) is not allowed in the classrooms - Students are asked to not block access to the school or surrounding entrances and not to disturb the neighbors with excessive noise, littering, or similar unpleasant behavior. - Students are expected to maintain proper dress and personal hygiene in order to maintain pleasant working conditions for students and staff.
