Summer of Sweet ’16
S
ummer camp is magical. There is no other
way to describe how truly transformative
the camp experience can be for children.
No two camps are the same and each
experience is unique, but each camp experience
offers a wide range of opportunities for individual
growth in skill areas like swimming, Spanish, public
speaking, creative problem-solving, tennis, and
much more. In the words of Charles W. Eliot,
former president of Harvard University, “I have
a conviction that a few
Registration weeks spent in a wellorganized summer
camp may be of more
value educationally
than a whole year of
formal school work.”

Children love camp because it’s fun,
but camp delivers much more in the form
of accelerated learning and meaningful
relationships with peers and caring adult
role models. Camp fosters a wide variety of
developmental and interpersonal skills, such
as communication, group living, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging.
American Camp Association research studies on the impact of camp on children found
that one of the greatest strengths of camps
was supportive relationships, or the quality
of relationships between youth and adult
staff. “Given the unquestioned importance
of high-quality relationships with adults to
the development of young people, camps
represent one of the best opportunities
many youth have outside of the family for
experiencing these essential relationships.”*
Every child can benefit from the growth
and learning camps have to offer. This Summer Camp edition of the Playbook is your
tool for planning your child’s summer. Camp
offerings are organized by date on pages
12-13. Registration opens Saturday, March 5,
9 a.m., online and at the Decatur Recreation
Center. Use your household ID and password to log in to WebTrac to find your sweet
spot in the Summer of Sweet ’16!

Rising 3rd-5th
July 11-15
Instructors: Tanya Rodriguez and Julie
Ogle
Do you love music? Enjoy hours of musicmaking as we play the recorder in solos,
duets, and small ensembles. We’ll add percussion to our pieces, create our own original
compositions, and more!
Taiko Drumming
Rising 3rd-5th
June 13-17
Instructor: F. Argean Vokes
Explore taiko, a form of Japanese-style drumming. Taiko is an exciting mix of drumming,
choreography, and encouraging yells. Start
by making some of the equipment you’ll use,
learn some traditional drumming patterns,
and create compositions of your own. Practice with your teammates to present a taiko
concert at the end of the week.
