About HandsOn Hong Kong
Welcome Message
Hong Kong is a city of contrasts and extremes. It’s one of the
world’s leading financial centers, and has a GDP per capita that is
in the global top ten. Yet one in six people in our city are living in
poverty, surviving on little more than HK$100 a day.
Dear Friends
Hong Kong’s needy are all around us, yet often go unnoticed.
Low-income children and families, mistreated and abused women,
refugees and asylum seekers, the elderly, people with disabilities,
and abandoned animals all live side by side us in our community.
And they need our help. That’s where HandsOn Hong Kong comes
in. We work to make a difference in their lives each day and your
donation of time and money makes our work possible.

HandsOn brings together diverse members of our community
through volunteerism to drive change in Hong Kong. By bringing
together charities, volunteers and corporations, HandsOn Hong
Kong develops and manages meaningful volunteer experiences
with a hands-on approach every step of the way. Through
matching the right resources to the right opportunities and
partners, HandsOn allows people to contribute their time to the
causes which matter most to them, and enables charities to receive
the support they need to serve the community.
By leveraging our professional volunteer management system and
established network of global affiliates, we aim to build an inspiring
community of likeminded individuals and empower them to make a
difference for Hong Kong.
Highlights of our work to date:
• HandsOn Hong Kong has over 4800 registered volunteers.
• We organize around 60 volunteer activities each month.
• In 2012, HandsOn Hong Kong volunteers contributed over 8,000
hours of service to the community, a 60% increase from 2011.
• 600 corporate volunteers gave 2500 hours of service through
HandsOn Hong Kong in 2012.
As you enjoy a wonderful evening of fine food and wine, great
company and lively entertainment, I also hope you keep in mind
tonight those less fortunate in our community. Over a million people
in our city live in poverty, including 25% of all children and 33% of
our elderly. Almost 350,000 people in Hong Kong are living with a
disability. HandsOn works in these underserved communities each
and everyday and with your help tonight we can continue to make a
meaningful difference to the lives of those most in need in our city.
Each dollar you donate enables
us to work with more charities
and community groups to deliver
much-needed services. With
your help, we can ensure that
more underprivileged children
have access to after school
tutoring; brighten the lives
of more disabled children by
taking them on memorable outings; improve the living conditions of
impoverished elderly people; renovate more neglected schools and
other community facilities; and so much more.
There are hundreds of other charities in Hong Kong that need
HandsOn volunteers, and thousands more individuals that would
like to give their time. With more resources, we can work to bring
these groups together for the benefit of hundreds of thousands more
people in our community.

This original lacquer painting by Artist Ông Thê’ Huy,
entitled “Kwun Yum,” (2008) is part of the artist’s own
private collection. The artist suggests that the image of
Kwun Yum, the Goddess of Mercy, will bring prosperity,
health and luck into your home and your life. Artist Ông
Thê’ Huy was born in Saigon, Vietnam. At age 7 he
moved to the UK and later settled in Hong Kong at age 15
where he went on to study art and design at Hong Kong
University. As an artist, Ông Thê’ Huy creates his works
by visualizing images through imagination and studying
materials through ideas and thoughts. On a personal level,
he is passionate about children’s education and giving
underprivileged young people a better start in life. The image is painted
with gold leaf and stain, with a black matte lacquer base. It is 56cm wide by
91.5cm high.

Art In Motion and the
Black & White Fashion Show
Art in Motion, with founder Monica Watkins at the helm, have been
working tirelessly as volunteers from their base in the US for several
months to conceptualize and deliver the amazing runway show at
tonight’s Ball.
The stars of the show are 18 underprivileged youngsters from the
local community. In the run-up to our Ball, they have taken part in
empowerment workshops based around photography, art, beauty
and fashion. These workshops have taken them on a journey of
self-discovery, helping them to see the world and their place in it
from a different angle, and to boost their self-esteem and inner
beauty.

About Art in Motion
Ford Model, artist and philanthropist Monica Watkins created
this movement to discover and give a voice to incredible young
talents from the inner city who have a burning desire to be part of
something greater than themselves. Art In Motion’s mission is to seek
out and nurture young, disadvantaged artists to grow, thrive, and
effect positive change in the world through visual and performance
art. Since 2008, Art in Motion has brought art, music, fashion and
photography workshops to more than 1,200 children in Europe, Haiti,
and America working with incredible organizations and programs.
Right after completing their Hong Kong project in partnership with

The Somaly Mam Foundation to deliver a series of art, empowerment
