INTRODUCTION
The Kauai Concert
Association and the
W. S. ‘Pete’ Robinson
Fund welcome you
to the Red Clay Jazz
Festival.
KCA has been serving the
Garden island since 1974
bringing a variety of genres
of music to its people including classical, world, jazz, blues, folk, dance and
choral. Over its 42 years in existence, KCA has presented over 160 artists to the
community.
One of our missions is to provide both world-class music and educational
opportunities to the children and seniors of Kauai. Many of our visiting artists in
the regular season take time to provide educational services to our students and
seniors by introducing their music and instruments to those audiences.
In the 2015/16 season Kauai Concert Association received several grants to begin
a tradition we hope to continue for years to come. In an effort to increase student
awareness of the wonders of music, we brought world- class musicians into the
schools to perform and answer questions. We were able to host four artists,
from one to five days at different times in the school year. These stellar artists
presented in-school educational experiences to an audience of 200 to 500 children
and young people per presentation. Taiko drummer extraordinaire, Kenny Endo
made a presentation to 377 students from Island School and Wilcox Elementary
School. Alpin Hong, concert pianist, performed for 1,081 students in three days
from Kekaha Elementary School, Chiefess Middle School, Kapaa Middle School and
Eleele Elementary School. Tunnel Six, a jazz group from Canada performed for 365
students from Waimea Middle School, Waimea High School, Kapaa Middle School
and Kapaa High School, Chiefess Middle School and Kauai High School in their five
day stay on Kauai. Finally, Kaycee Parker a violinist reached four schools and 854
students from Kalaheo School, Kauai High, Kapaa Elementary and Waimea Middle
School.
A total of 2854 students were able to attend full performances. We were heartened
at the depth of the gratitude from both students and faculty. Many expressed
how extremely special and important these events are to the students in an era
when budgets are constantly tightened. Some of the artists have connections in
other ensembles or with musicians who may be a potential good fit for future
programming. In hopes of continuing this program in the coming years we
have applied for several grants to fund it. As far as we are able to assess, no
organization is filling this need.
The Festival this year celebrates the Latin Jazz sounds along with traditional jazz
and Hawaiian Jazz. We hope that you will enjoy the day!!
We’re proud to support an organization that
perpetuates musical education for the

THE W.S. ‘PETE’ ROBINSOn MEMORIAL JAZZ FUND
T
he W. S. ‘Pete’ Robinson Memorial Jazz Fund
was established in 2000 honoring a man whose
vision so captured the imagination of those
around him that the dream did not die with the
man. Pete moved to Kauai in 1996 and hosted
the popular KKCR radio show Red Clay Review in
which he played the finest ‘straight ahead’ and
classic Jazz. In his rich melodic voice Pete shared
his deep knowledge of the players and the music
with his growing audience. With a vision of an
Annual Kauai Jazz Festival in mind, Pete organized
a committee to bring world class Jazz artists
to Kauai to perform live and also to enlighten
students on some of the finer points of technique
and artistry in music workshops.
The first concert in October 1999, brought
saxophone master Ernie Watts to Kauai. The
performance was stellar as was the Student
Workshop the following day. A tradition had been
established!
When Pete lost his battle with cancer in
September of 2000, the W. S. ‘Pete’ Robinson
Memorial Jazz Fund was established in his honor.
Donations are used to bring Jazz artists to Kauai
for concerts, festivals and student workshops. Listed below are some of the talent this Fund
has brought to Kauai:
Ernie Watts – 1999, 2006, 2010
The Bud Shank Quartet – 2001
Hawaii Jazz All Stars - 2003
Peter Sprague Pass the Drum – 2003, 2010
Louis Hayes & the Cannonball Tribute Band – 2005
Chick Corea/Gary Burton – 2006
Lew Soloff – 2007

Pete Escovedo
Pete Escovedo
Native Californian Pete Escovedo
discovered and cultivated a love and
passion for music, which soon led him
to embrace Latin jazz and pass it on to
his sons and daughters, as his father
did for him. Now Pete is the head of a
musical dynasty - father to musicians
Juan Escovedo, Sheila Escovedo (aka
Sheila E ), and Peter Michael Escovedo
of the Wayne Brady Show Band and
dancer, manager and promoter Zina
Escovedo.
As a major force in Latin music
since the late ‘60s, Pete has earned
a reputation for breaking down the
barriers between smooth jazz, salsa,
Latin jazz and contemporary music.
He is known worldwide for his fiery
live performances, session work,
solo albums and signature sound on
timbales. He is also a talented vocalist
with nuanced phrasing.
From the 1970’s until today, Pete
has performed and toured with such
respected artist as Mongo Santamaria,
Bobby McFerrin, Cal Tjader, Woody
Herman, Billy Cobham, Prince, Boz
Scaggs, Arturo Sandoval, Marlena
Shaw, Poncho Sanchez, Chick Corea, Roy Obiedo, Tito Puente and many others. It was
Puente who inspired Pete to take up the timbales. The two met when Pete was just
eighteen years old. The two struck up a lifelong friendship.
Starting out, Pete’s brothers, Coke and Phil, joined him and three others to form The
Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet. They played all over the San Francisco Bay area,
carrying their own instruments on the bus to get to their next gig and earn their $50.
Music was everything to them. The band broke up when Pete and Coke were asked
to tour with Carlos Santana. It was an amazing opportunity to be a percussionist with
Santana on the international stage and play on his albums, Moonflower, Oneness, and
Inner Secrets. Over that three years, Pete’s vision grew bigger and he felt a need to
find an outlet for the music that kept playing in his mind. He and Coke left the tour in
1970, founded the stellar fourteen piece band, Azteca that toured the USA with Stevie
Wonder and the Temptations and recorded two albums, Azteca and Pyramid Of The
Moon, for Columbia, which are now considered collectors items. They made a name for
themselves and were on their way. Sadly, his brother, Coke died July 13, 1986.
In this century, Pete and his Latin Jazz Orchestra continue to break new ground when
it comes to playing live music and bringing talented and well known musicians together
to perform on stage. Their shows attract all ages, backgrounds and nationalities who
come together to hear incredible music, the memory of which will last forever.
Pete has recorded seven acclaimed solo albums, two albums with his daughter Sheila
E., and the Latina Familia live album with Sheila and Tito Puente. Pete is a painter
of note and his CD covers often display his artwork. See: https://www.discogs.com/

The Escovedo Family’s contribution to the community is exemplary; they take pride
in giving back by assisting families and children in need by introducing the power of
healing through music. The spirit of Aloha shines brightly in the Escovedo Ohana.

It was Roger’s mother, Gloria,
who introduced him to Cuban
rhythms and some of the well know Latin jazz musicians. His family’s inspiration
along with a stint playing in an Army band with Grover Washington Jr. and Billy
Cobham, gave Roger the experience needed to perform and record with Mary Lou
Williams, Mongo Santamaria, Donald Byrd, Dizzy Gillespie, Rosemary Clooney, and
Herbie Mann. Roger’s flute playing is featured on the Grammy Award-winning Cal
Tjader CD La Onda Va Bien, as well as many notable CDs by Donald Byrd, Peaches
and Herb, Bobby Hutcherson, and Mongo Santamaria. http://www.cduniverse.com/

Now settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, this Master of Latin Jazz works with
a great variety of musicians including Steve Miller, John Handy, Ray Obiedo,
Jamie Davis, James Carter, Poncho Sanchez, Leon Joyce, Jr. and Pete Escovedo
performing on the West Coast and playing concerts in Europe. He is also a
member of The San Francisco Jazz Quartet. Roger became an integral part of the
Hawaii music Ohana while stationed on Oahu with the Army. Recently he was part
of Taj Mahal and the Hula Blues
Band recording Live From Kauai
which won the 2016 Na Hoku
Hanohano for best R&B CD.
Roger’s versatility and grand
array of interests outside of
the music scene made him the
subject of the following article:

Pete Escovedo
Roger grew up in New York
listening to his father, legendary
trombonist and vibraphonist
Tyree Glenn, play with Louis
Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and
Duke Ellington. His hands-on
education in jazz included
working with his famous dad
in a band featuring other jazz
greats such as Wynton Kelly on
piano, Joe Jones on drums, and
Slam Stewart on bass. Some
of Roger’s teachers were Julius
Baker (flute), Alberto Socarras
(flute), Garvin Bushell (clarinet,
sax, flute), and his father on

Juan Escovedo
Growing up surrounded by Latin rhythms and haunting melodies as a child of Pete
and Juanita Escovedo, Juan felt the call of the Music Muse at an early age. He began
teaching himself how to play bongos, congas, trap drums, timbales, percussion
and other instruments as a young boy with guidance from his father. When he was
fourteen he went from studying with his dad to proudly performing with him.
Since that time, Juan has solidly established himself in the industry as a musician of
complexity, style and originality. His artistic achievements flow from his rich musical
heritage and passion for his art form.
Lending his talents to the congas, drums and vocals Juan has toured, performed,
and recorded with a wide range of artists including Prince, Patti LaBelle, Teri Lynn
Carrington, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Tito Puente, Tony Toni
Tone, Lionel Richie, Bobby Womack, Barry White, Amerie, Chingy, Jody Watley, Lou
Bega, Raphael Saadiq, El DeBarge, Cheryl Lynn, and MC Hammer. He also tours as a
solo artist with his father’s Latin Jazz Orchestra and his sister, Sheila E.
The E Family, an ensemble consisting of Juan, father Pete, brother Peter Michael,
and sister Sheila, has recently released a highly acclaimed CD Now & Forever which
includes three songs co-written and produced by Juan. Now at work on his solo
CD, Juan continues to lead his
own band, The Juan Escovedo
Orchestra, and is currently
developing a new R&B band, Seven
Days, with Levi Seacer Jr.
Along the way, Juan has continued
to make special appearances in
videos and film as well as recording
and performing with many of the
most notable artists around. To

Such notoriety co-existed with Ray’s rising status as a solo artist; recording a clutch of
‘90’s albums for Windham Hill Jazz while leading The Ray Obiedo Group on club dates
and concerts. He made his solo debut in 1989 with Perfect Crime. Obiedo’s 1993 Sticks
and Stones, reached the Top Ten on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts.
Now from his Werewolf Recording Studios in the Oakland Hills, Ray can make the music
he most wants to hear. “Time is absolutely one of the most precious and valuable
luxuries in the recording industry,” he says, “and without question, the greatest
advantage of owning my own studio is having all the time I need to make sure each
and every track is as close to perfection as possible.” In 2015 he released the critically
acclaimed There Goes That on the Rhythmus Record label. View his CDs on: https://

Ray’s solo compositions have seen
interpretations from such artists as
Tower of Power, Sheila E, Marion

jazz guitarist Bruce Forman and
many others. Parts of his work have
appeared on film soundtracks, most notably Michael Caine’s “A Shock To The System”
and Richard Gere’s “Internal Affairs”.

Ray Obiedo
Ray grew up in the Bay Area music
scene, going to Winterland and the
Fillmore to catch Jimi Hendrix and
Janis Joplin, Sly Stone, Isaac Hayes,
Led Zeppelin and James Brown. It was
a heady musical education. Early in
his career Obiedo toured the USA with
Johnny “Hammond” Smith, Europe
with Julian Priester, and the Globe
with Herbie Hancock. Since then, he’s
toured with the Rodney Franklin Group,
Azteca, the Linda Tillery Group, Sheila
E, and the Pete Escovedo Orchestra,
and he’s played on dozens of albums
with artists from Holly Near to Grover
Washington to Lou Rawls, as well as
fronting seven albums of his own.

Marc Van Wageningen
Marc Van Wageningen (Vah-GA-ning-un) began playing bass guitar as a sixteen
year old in his hometown of Amsterdam, Holland. He relocated to the San
Francisco Bay Area in 1980 and started performing with jazz greats Eddie
Marshall, George Marshall, Larry Schneider, and Mel Martin. Marc and his late
brother Paul who was a master drummer, became important members of Latin
Jazz legend Pete Escovedo’s ensemble, recording on several of the percussionist’s
recordings and touring the world with his group.
Moving in and out of the Latin music world, Marc found a long line of work
with funk super group Tower Of Power, Latin Jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo, fusion
keyboardist George Duke, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker and countless other
artists. He currently tours with the Sheila E Band.
After years of sitting in the background, Marc and his brother Paul gathered a
group of the Bay Area’s strongest musicians to record “The VW Brothers Muziek
”. This highly regarded album highlights Marc’s strong compositions. “Marc
contributes nine of the eleven tracks with writing that seamlessly weaves a
cross-section of styles into nuanced, focused compositions. “His bass playing is
similarly infused and intricately shaded.” - Chris Jisi, Bass Player. To hear a cut
from that CD see: http://www.npr.org/sections/ablogsupreme/2010/02/the_vw_

As an active educator, Marc created and launched a curriculum for
California Prison system’s music program. He also serves on the staff at the Jazz
Institute Berkeley CA and gives private Bass lessons.

Marc has served as a house band member for several television programs
including the “Wayne Brady Show” where he was also asked to write musical
cues to enhance the quality of the show. He has also recorded soundtracks for
documentaries and feature length films.

Bob has performed with top
artists in San Francisco and
around the world including
Grammy-nominated Latin jazz
greats Ray Obiedo and Pete Escovedo. He has worked with noted percussionists
such as Karl Perazzo (Santana) and Michael Spiro in several projects including the
salsa band Conjunto Karabalí and the world-jazz sextet Tanaóra. Bob recorded
three critically acclaimed CDs with Orquesta La Moderna Tradición, featuring the

style, that has been performed at major festivals across the USA for nearly sixteen
years.
As an educator, Bob has been a part of the faculty for California Jazz Conservatory
(formerly The Jazzschool) since 2002. He teaches group classes in salsa/AfroCuban piano and Jazz piano at the Community Music School and gives private

In a recent tweet,
Riya exclaimed, “I’m a
Palauan/Dominican girl,
living in Hawaii. I sing
for a living and love my
life!” This enthusiasm
shines through in her
performances as the
headliner aboard the
Star of Honolulu for their
Sunset Dinner Cruises
where “guests are awed
by Riya’s powerful and
alluring jazz vocals” –
Honolulu Star. When not
singing aboard ship, Riya
can be found performing
the lead vocals with Jazz/
Neo Soul quartet Adagio,
and R&B/Funk band
Groove Evolution.
In the last several years,
Riya has sung all over
the world from New
York to Palau working

“share and give back.” From an early age, Riya has sought ways to help others,
assisting women in transition from prison back to society, being an outreach
for the homeless, and sharing her gift of music in outdoor concerts and events.
Riya was honored with the 2014 Special Recognition Award by Governor Neil
Abercrombie at the Hawaii NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People) for her “phenomenal support of nonprofit organizations, cultural
programs and superlative skill as a jazz singer.”
In 2006 Riya recorded a song written by her father, who is a Pastor, dedicated
to the men & women serving in the armed forces. Kirk Thompson of Kalapana
engineered the song. They partnered with Jeep/Chrysler’s “Operation Gratitude” to
send 7000 copies to the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. She continues to
be a featured artist with the 25th Infantry, Tropic Lightning Band for concerts and
special events. In December 2012, Riya was a featured singer on NBC’s national

With his BA in music in
hand, Joshua moved to
San Francisco and quickly
became immersed in the
Bay Area jazz scene. He
continued his musical
studies under jazz pianist Dick Hindman. Kaye’s quartet and trio performed regularly
at the Shanghai 1930 Jazz Club as well as at the Cosmopolitan Club. He could also
be heard gigging solo or with a group in the local hotels including the Redwood Room
in the Clift Hotel, Maxfield’s at the Palace Hotel, and the Penthouse at the Fairmont
Hotel. He released his first CD entitled The Joshua Kaye Quartet – Live! Which was
described as “kiinectic Latin swing” and featured sidemen who were veterans of the
Cal Tjader band (allaboutjazz.com).
In 2008 he moved to Honolulu and began performing with a new jazz trio on Fridays
at the Dragon Upstairs jazz club. In 2009 he produced a record for songwriter/lyricist
Laura-May Azpiazu called Midnight Smooth on which he was featured. Most recently,
he recorded some tracks with New York trumpeter Eddie Henderson for a CD project
to be released later this year. Currently, Josh can be heard performing with his jazz
trio in the Veranda at the Kahala Hotel and at Sarento’s at the top of the Ilikai with
bassist Bruce Hamada or as a member of the guitar led group called The Quiet Band.
When Joshua is not performing or working on his music projects, he enjoys spending
time with his wife and three children. He has also developed a passion for surfing.

Russian born Dmitry Gorodetsky was an early starter in the music
world. Encouraged by his parents at a very young age to explore various
instruments Dmitry experimented with piano, guitar, and trumpet,
before settling on upright and electric Bass. He moved with his family to
Massachusetts when he was ten years old and continued his music studies
with their support. At age fourteen, Dmitry played his first professional
gig. Since then he has shown a dedication and commitment to a life of
music first going on to play and study with Jazz Saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi,
Drummer Bob Gulotti, and other Boston local Jazz scene professionals, then
travelling to Europe with a Symphony Orchestra playing the upright Bass.
As Dmitry’s appreciation of the music grew deeper, his understanding of its
different forms began to evolve. He gained inspiration from Jimi Hendrix,
Beatles, Rolling Stones and then ventured into Hip Hop, Blues, Funk, R&B,
and Pop music. Some of his bass influences are Jimmy Garrison, Ray Brown,
Pino Palladino, James Jamerson and James Genus to name a few.
His versatility in playing several genres of music, along with his unique
bass sound and true musicianship have made Dmitry a “go to” bassist for
tours all over Europe, Middle East, the Caribbean as well as North America.
Dmitry has performed, toured and recorded with scores of international
recording artists including; Duke Robillard, Roomful of Blues, Lauryn Hill,
Fantasia, Eric Benet, Kenny Lattimore, Vashawn Mitchell, Wyclef Jean,
Rita Ora, Cheryl Pepsii Riley, Nas, Christina Aguilera, and Brockett Parsons

Jazz Kanikapila
Jazz Kanikapila
The word Kanikapila means play music. It comes from two Hawaiian words:
Kani meaning sound and ka pila meaning any string instrument. Kanikapila has
come to mean a gathering together to sing and play music in an impromptu jam
session.
Kirk Smart was asked to bring together some talented Hawaiian singers and
performers, help them select songs and work on musical arrangements to best
show off their Jazz Chops. For this first Red Clay Jazz Kanikapila Kirk chose to
work with three Wahine. Two members of this year’s Jazz Kanikapila, Cindy
Combs and Lady Ipo, have been playing and performing Hawaiian music for
many moons and both are accomplished Blues and Jazz artists as well. They are
having fun jamming with Kirk and crew trying out different licks for their favorite
tunes. To round out the ensemble, Kirk sought out kumu hula and chanter,
Sabra Kauka and persuaded her to bring her rich voice and style to the stage.
This will be her debut as a Jazz artist. With Kauai’s own Darryl Miyasato on bass,
veteran Tony Rodarte on drums, and Kirk on guitar, slack key, and mandolin, this
should be a knock out jam!
There are some basic similarities between ancient Hawaiian music and the
foundations of Jazz. The seeds of Jazz were planted when African slaves
were brought to America to work in the cotton and tobacco fields. Since they
were barred from socializing they used their drumming in various dynamic and
syncopated patterns to send information throughout the camps. They would also
sing or chant in the fields using rhythmic vocal call and response as a method
for communicating. Ancient Hawaiians also relied on the drums and vocal
chanting to communicate important events and natural occurrences. The format
of rhythmic chants was also an effective way of preserving an oral history and
passing it down to future generations.

“Kirk Smart is a musician who takes his audience on a soulful cruise every time he
plays.” – Tony Kilbert, Director of Performing Arts Center. In addition to being a
highly skilled artist and talented performer who has toured the USA, Europe, and
South America, Maestro Smart possesses a rare gift for pulling artists together into
vibrant musical combos and arranging music to fit the depth and breadth of those
performers’ abilities. Not long ago he brought his idea for a string of performances
to fruition when he sought out sponsorship and gathered together some stellar
musicians for the highly acclaimed History of Jazz Concert Series held at the
Performing Arts Center on Kauai. It is fitting that he is the one to rehearse and
arrange the music for this Jazz Kanikapila. http://www.ksmartmusic.com
Raised in Europe, Kirk travelled to Los Angeles to round out his music education and
study guitar with Joe Pass and Ted Greene, among others, before making his home
on Kauai. Through the years, Kirk has played with scores of renowned musicians
including Taj Mahal, Donald Fagan, John Oates, Shawn Colvin, Noel Jewkes, Buffy St.
Marie, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell and Todd Rundgren. Here’s the link to his newest
CD and Jazz History recording: http://www.ksmartmusic.com/shop_music
Kirk and wife Torah own Hanalei Strings on the north shore of Kauai. This unique
music store and yarn shop provides weekly ukulele and guitar classes as well as
knitting lessons. On many evenings the shop becomes a lively music venue. Kirk
encourages local musicians young and old to perform. He brings in talent from the
mainland and Europe. Jazz is king yet a wide variety of music genres can be heard
from local Hawaiian music to his son Eli’s band OCDC that really rocks the room.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwsV-lGdIbA&feature=youtube.
It is a cozy gathering place for musos of all ages.
Kirk divides his time between teaching guitar and playing music. He is passionate
about both. Occasionally he takes time out for a special project or odd job such as
acting as the Music Coach for Pirates of The Caribbean when it was being filmed on
Kauai. Kirk and his family spend long stretches of time in Italy visiting old friends and
playing music. Yoga, hiking, and surfing keep him fit for this active lifestyle.

Lady Ipo Kahaunaele-Ferreira
Lady Ipo cut her teeth in the entertainment business
singing and playing ‘ukulele and dancing hula on Wailua
River Fern Grotto boat rides during the day and at
various hotel luaus in the evenings. She quickly became
a featured artist and was asked to tour the islands and
Japan. A consummate entertainer, Ipo is often asked to
emcee events. Her wit, amazing voice and smooth hula
are always a delight; her hula concerts have become an
island tradition. As a popular radio personality, “Ukulele
Lady”, she cut a CD by the same name. “Lady Ipo is the
freshest breath of Hawaiian air you ever want to enjoy.”
- Ray Blouin, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn.
At a recent Mokihana Festival Composer’s Concert, Ipo
brought the house down performing one of her original
rocking blues tune and walked off with the prize. Yes,
the Lady has Jazz chops too! As Ipo tells it, her first
exposure to Jazz and Blues came when she was touring
abroad and wound up in some vintage coffee shops that played vinyl recordings of Jazz
greats. The chords and rhythms intrigued her. She was taken by the story telling of the lyrics
and how they were phrased to draw out emotional responses. Ipo soaked it up. It began to
shape her style of playing Hawaiian music and when she returned home she hooked up with
some seasoned jazz musicians playing at local piano bars so she could share the songs she
had learned on tour.
Ipo’s family roots go back centuries on Kauai. She has been surrounded by music all of her
life. When her grandmother, mother, and aunties sang together at family gatherings, the
blend of their harmonies always brought a “chicken-skin” moment. Is there anyone in her
clan who does not sing, play music and/or dance? Last year she brought two dozen of her
Ohana to entertain at a Kauai Art Council’s E Kanikapila Kakou concert, shouts of “Hana
Hou!” rang from the crowd. You can hear Ipo and her daughter Kainani sing in Project
Kuleana, a statewide musical project at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUH5WA-mxsE.
Sweet!
Semi-retired from the “music biz”, Ipo now serves as full time minister of God at Ke Akua
Mana Church of the Living God. She officiates at many weddings and blessings. She enjoys
giving weekly keiki ‘ukulele lessons at Hanalei Strings. But mostly, she is a loving Tutu to
her beautiful grandchildren who speak fluent Hawaiian and are learning the music of their
ancestors when the ohana meet to “kanikapila” in the back yard.
Sabra Kauka
Sabra began singing as a child at home and at church. She recalls that everyone in her Ohana
sang. They would often sit in a semi-circle after a family dinner and “just jam” with ‘uke,
guitar, bass and piano. She remembers listening to recordings of Big Bands of the era such
as Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, and Quincy Jones and ballroom dancing
with her parents. Sabra also grew up listening to songs, prayers, chants, and blessings in
Hawaiian. Now a Chanter herself, Sabra is often called upon by the community to continue
these blessings and traditions. Her rich full voice carries beautifully on the trade winds.
Sabra’s appearance at Red Clay marks her debut as a Jazz singer.
Although Honolulu born and a Kamehameha graduate, Sabra was raised in a variety of
countries due to her father’s position in the military. Armed with, a degree in Anthropology
from U of H, a camera, her love of nature and a gift for engaging most any one in
conversations, Sabra landed in Alaska where she raised two children and became a
contributing photojournalist for a variety of publications including National Geographic and
Smithsonian. While on assignment in the bush, Sabra read a troubling news article at a
Red Clay Jazz Festival 2016 - 24
trading post concerning the health and welfare
of native Hawaiians that inspired her to return
home to kokua in any way she could. She settled
on Kauai. As a Cultural practitioner and kumu,
she strives to help sustain and perpetuate Native
Hawaiian traditions by sharing her knowledge with
future generations See: https://www.youtube.com/

Sabra Kauka
At present Sabra is a kumu of Hawaiian Studies
and hula halau Na Pua o Kamaile at Island School.
In addition Sabra coordinates the D.O.E. Hawaiian
Studies Cultural Personnel Resources on Kauai. She
teaches many traditional arts including making Kapa,
feather lei and weaving lauhala. She is a founding
member and president of Na Pali Coast ‘Ohana,
the caretakers of Nuʻalolo Kai State Park on Kaua‘i.
Sabra’s energetic enthusiasm for these and other
projects is palpable and her kokua appears to be
boundless: https://vimeo.com/144526453
Cindy Combs
The five solo albums Cindy Combs
has recorded to date, spotlight
different facets of her musical
styles from traditional slack key
instrumentals to a blend of jazz and
blues featuring her unique vocal
style. They include two projects
for Dancing Cat Records produced
by George Winston entitled “Slack
Key Lady” and “Sunny Rain Guitar
Solos”. Cindy’s debut CD “Land of
the Endless Summer”, shows off her
sultry voice and jazz based slack
key. Her newest releases “Moonrise
Music” and “Kiss Those Blues
Goodbye” can be downloaded at: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/cindycombs3 .
Cindy’s award winning compositions are performed by scores of entertainers and have
been recorded by renown Hawaiian musicians such as Olomana, Jerry Santos, and the
Ka’au Crater Boys. Known as a master of traditional and contemporary Slack Key guitar,
Cindy has collaborated and recorded with many artists over the years taking home a Na
Hokuhanohano Award for her part in the 2013 Compilation Album of the Year. She has
toured with Grammy winners Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui and Owana Salazar among
others.
Cindy recalls falling in love with Hawaiian music at age 10 when her family moved to
the islands from San Diego and introduced her to the ‘ukulele. Two years later she was
playing guitar and singing folk songs. Soon she was writing original music and took up
Slack Key Guitar. She’s been a performing artist, composer, arranger and teacher ever
since.
At present Cindy is the Music Director of Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church.
She performs regularly in various venues throughout Hawaii playing Blues, Jazz, Folk and
Hawaiian. Oh, and she is a proud grandmother. http://www.facebook.com/slackjazzblues

Tony Rodarte
Tony Rodarte is at home playing
everything from Jazz and Salsa to Rock
and Roll and Pop. He has toured with
Manny Lopez, gigged with Willie Nelson,
and sat in with Tito Puente.
Tony’s decision to make music a career
came to him while he was playing in his
high school’s marching band in Southern
California. After graduation and a stint in
Viet Nam, Tony took advantage of the GI
Bill to continue his music studies while at
the same time auditioning for stars such
as Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye.
Over the years Tony’s great skill, versatility, professionalism and congeniality have
established him as the “go to” drummer for visiting headliners. Tony has shared the
stage with some fine Jazz artists here including Ernie Watts, Peter Sprague, Noel
Okimoto, and Ernestine Anderson. He is the featured drummer on Michael Ruff’s
“Acoustic Trio” CD: http://michaelruff.com/merch/michael-ruff-acoustic-trios
When he and his wife decided to raise their family on Kauai, Tony didn’t miss a beat.
Soon after their arrival, he became the drummer for the wildly popular Blonde Boyz
band. Since that time, Tony has performed with scores of island musicians including
Lopaka Brown and Tommy Togioka and has backed up a number of artists in a variety
of music venues. He plays casual gigs around the island and can be heard every other
Saturday at Hanalei Bay Resort’s Happy Talk Lounge.
In the day to day, Tony is a renaissance “fix it” man with a rainbow of skills including
carpentry and mechanics. He enjoys “hanging” with friends and family, especially his
grandchildren at home or the beach.

Darryl’s Miyasato’s impressive formal music
education began with piano lessons from Shirley
Iha at age 8. He took up trumpet, tuba and
electric bass under the baton of maestro Larry
McIntosh at Kauai High. While earning BA in
Music Composition at UH Manoa, he studied
double bass with Michael Gorman. In 2000,
Darryl received a Master of Music in Orchestral
Performance at Manhattan School of Music
studying with Principal Bassist of New York
Philharmonic, Timothy Cobb.
After graduation, Darryl moved to the state
of Washington to become Principal Bassist of
the Spokane Symphony. During that same
period he served as Conductor of Spokane Falls
Community College Symphony and instructor of
music theory and double bass at that institution.
After receiving his teaching degree from Eastern
Washington University in 2005 Darryl returned
home to Kauai where he has blessed the
students of his alma mater, Kauai High, with his knowledge of music. With more than 200
students every year, he teaches band, chorus, piano, jazz ensemble, marching band, and
‘ukulele classes.
As a jazz musician, Darryl has played with Ernestine Anderson, Donald Vega, Martin
Denny, Gabe Baltazar, Jimmy Borges, Noel Okimoto, Abe Lagrimas Jr. to name a few. On
island he plays regularly with Michael Ruff in Princeville and with other musicans in a
variety of casual venues.
In his free time this “local boy” enjoys fishing, surfing and camping with his wife, Reiko
and two sons and daughter ages 4-8.
