Intro
So you’ve heard from a friend that you can get drunk on cough syrup, or you got bored online one day
and started researching cheap, legal highs. Maybe you want to explore yourself and see your life and the
world in general in a new light. For whatever reason, you came to be reading the Dextromethorphan
Handbook.
In this guide, I will cover the basics of getting high on Dextromethorphan, aka DXM, a chemical present
in the majority of cough syrups on the market. Give this a read from cover to cover before attempting to
use the stuff. These resources will tell you which kinds of cough syrup you can safely consume for a
unique high, as well as in what amounts to take them in. If you just grab any bottle of cough medicine
off the shelf and chug it, you'll (probably) be in for a lot of problems! Be careful with what chemicals you
put into your body, especially if they interact with the brain, your most important organ!
However, this is not to say that DXM should not be done. For anyone looking to expand his
consciousness, question himself or the universe, or simply get a good cheap buzz, pour over the lore you
find here and become a master dexter. I take no responsibility for the accuracy of the material hosted:
read at your own risk!
My original content comes primarily from the DXM FAQ, the 420chan wiki article on DXM, and my own
personal experiences. However, the DXM FAQ is too long, I think, and poorly formatted; and the wiki
article is too brief and also poorly formatted. My solution is to produce just enough information to get
you started with your DXM career safely and to give you an idea of what kinds of questions you could
find answers to in the DXM FAQ.

Before you dose
Before you take your first dose of dextromethorphan recreationally, there are a few things you
ought to know about it. Yes, DXM is legal; yes, DXM is easy to obtain; yes, you can get high off
it; and, yes, the high is a very good one. As an experienced psychonaut, I'd argue that DXM
gives the best high of any drug I've tried, and I've done quite a few.
Read this section very carefully!
The first thing you need to know before you try getting high on cough syrup is that you will get
very sick and possibly die if you do it while on anti-depressants. This is because DXM in itself
has many traits associated with antidepressants and taking a recreational dose would be very
similar to overdosing on your Zoloft or Lexapro or what have you. This does not mean that
DXM alone is particularly toxic; all that you need to keep in mind is that it is toxic in
combination with antidepressants and other kinds of psychiatric medications.
The next thing you need to know is that you must consume cough syrup with Dextromethorphan
HBr as the only active ingredient. Other active ingredients will lead to severe nausea and
seizures or possibly death depending on what's been added. Some of these harmful chemicals can
be extracted through a simple chemistry experiment, but that goes beyond the scope of this intro.
In fact, don't consume any drugs other than cannabis with DXM; this includes caffeine and
alcohol, and especially not speed or opiates!
The last thing that you need to know is your weight and the amount of cough syrup there is in the
bottle you've purchased. If the back label says that there is 15mg of DXM for every 15ml of
syrup, then it is very easy to determine how much DXM is in your bottle of tussin. This is also
true if the back label says that there is 15mg for every gelcap.
Punch your weight into the DXM calculator1 and you will be told how much syrup you must
consume to reach a certain plateau of DXM. Most commonly, one bottle is necessary for the
lower plateau functions, two is necessary for an intermediate dose, and three bottles are
necessary for higher plateau trips. But don't chug blindly, and use the measuring cup to get your
dose as close to the ideal dose as possible!
Finally, you must make sure to take reasonable tolerance breaks from DXM. This is necessary
not only to make the most of the drug but to also avoid becoming addicted. The simple rule of
thumb for tolerance is to wait # of plateau weeks before you can safely use DXM again.

Brand information
Once you have decided to abuse Dextromethorphan, you must purchase the right kind of syrup
and know how much of the syrup to drink to reach your desired state. As I consider myself to be
a DXM expert of sorts, I have collected many different syrup and pill bottles throughout the past
few years, which I will upload here for your convenience as well as provide commentary.
Make sure not to buy any syrup with active ingredients! If the pharmacist gives you the stink
eye while you rifle through the syrup aisle, flipping bottles around, simply explain to him that
you have reactions to certain ingredients in the syrup. He should understand.
Traditional 'tussin
$6 -- 4oz, 354mg
This is your traditional cough syrup. The most well-known kind is Robitussin (hence the term,
robotripping) but there are also generic equivalents. For your convenience, here are photos of which
kinds of syrup work for recreational purpose. From what I understand, the majority of this stuff is cherry
flavored or orange. It doesn't taste great, but oh well.

Delsym
$11 -- 3oz, 356mg; 5oz, 592mg
Ah, Delsym. This stuff tastes a bit better than the traditional 'tussin, but it's still not all that great.
It comes in grape and orange flavors. I think that it mixes well with orange juice or orange soda.
Interesting to note, Delsym lasts a lot longer (1.5 times as long) as standard Robitussin does.
Make sure that you have plenty of time to waste. It’s a bit weaker, too. May also be marketed as
"long lasting" tussin.
Note: Delsym is 12 hours as opposed to Robitussin's 8, so I divided the total amount of DXM by
1.5 to get an equivalent dose.

Cough gels
$6 -- 20 pills, 300mg
All the fun of DXM, without the taste of syrup. Cough gels reduce nausea for some people but
induce it in others. There's a good chance that they won't be available in your area due to cheapass kids who steal them, but take a look around. They're in about half the pharmacies in my area.

DayQuil
$7, roughly 300mg
Make super sure not to get the kind with other active ingredients. This stuff is a bit more
expensive that standard robitussin, but it tastes pretty decent, especially when mixed with orange
soda or juice. It can be watered down alright too. The kind in my area comes in both 10oz and
12oz varieties.

The plateaus
I have mentioned before that there are different plateaus in recreational use, as have many others;
and if you enter your weight into my DXM calculator, you'll see that four plateaus appear for the
different amounts of syrup you can consume. What is a plateau? Simply put, it is the kind of
experience you'll get from consuming dextromethorphan, and it lacks a peak (effects remain
consistent during the trip). DXM is unique in that consuming higher quantities of the chemical
results not in more pronounced effects of what one will get out of a lower dose but entirely
different ones altogether.
If you have never done DXM before, I recommend starting with the first plateau and moving
your way up once you find yourself bored with the effects you get. It is common for first-time
users to not realize that they're high and they find themselves consuming more syrup than they
originally intended; make sure to put your bottle away before you begin so you don't make this
mistake! My first time abusing DXM resulted in me going from a first plateau dose to a fourth
plateau one entirely by mistake.
In a nutshell: the first and second plateaus are a bit like being drunk or high, and the third and
fourth ones are like entering mysterious dream worlds; but even then, not really. Use the DXM
calculator to carefully plan your dose.
The first plateau
1.5mg/kg -- 2.5mg/kg (recommended: 2.7mg/kg)
The first plateau. This is where it all begins. Taking a relatively low dose of a chemical is a good
way to determine whether or not it is the right drug for you to use. The negative side effects are
relatively minor at this point; there may be a bit of nausea, but you should be able to manage it.
The first plateau is a bit like being tipsy. You'll feel good due to the higher amounts of serotonin
in your system, but you'll also feel a bit drunk due to agonism on your NMDA receptors. Some
people have difficulty walking around when they're at the first plateau, thus leading to the term
"robowalking". Gravity really seems to change a lot. Try dancing, walking around, swimming, or
something else to that effect. I wouldn't recommend driving. Music sounds a lot better on DXM
for most people, so it's good to put on a bit of background music.
Aside from feeling a bit drunk and stoned, you'll also find yourself a bit stimulated. You'll have
more energy and increased cognition. Writing becomes easier, if you are inclined to do so, and
you may become better at conversation. But I wouldn't recommend talking to your parents at a
first plateau dose; even if they don't realize that you're high, there's a chance that they may notice
that something's up. Do you think your mother would be happy to discover that you're high on
cough syrup?

The second plateau
2.5mg/kg -- 7.5mg/kg (recommended: 6.4mg/kg)
This is basically the first plateau, but a bit stronger. Some people begin to hallucinate at this
dose. Now, DXM hallucinations aren't terribly frightening; it's not like you'll see aliens
crashlanding in your backyard or imagine that you've been set on fire. And they're not like acid,
where you see colors and have things shrink and grow. DXM hallucinations are primarily closed
eyed and resemble things like dreams. Some people have fantastic memory recall where they can
close their eyes and relive their old memories, or see certain moments frozen like 3D snapshots
that they can navigate; others can fly around through fantastic plains or explore ancient temples.
DXM hallucinations are best experienced lying down with the lights turned dim. When your eyes
start to cross, if they do, just lie down and close your eyes.
If you didn't encounter any nausea at the first plateau, you'll definitely be running into it now. I
highly recommend keeping a bag around in case you barf. Barfing on DXM isn't terribly awful;
it's basically opening your mouth, leaning over, and spitting up some syrup. For this reason, I
recommend taking syrup on an empty stomach.
Music should be much more enjoyable at this dose than it was before, and walking around
should prove to be a much more difficult task. Try to lie down and relax, or walk slowly. If you
have to move up and down stairs, go very slowly and use the handrail!
The third plateau
7.5mg/kg -- 15mg/kg (recommended: 9.4mg/kg)
This is where the DXM trip begins to resemble more of a trip. Closed eye hallucinations
definitely occur here, and you'll feel even happier and more relaxed than you were before. I think
that DXM hallucinations resemble lucid dreams more than anything else; again, there's no
danger of thinking you're a bird and jumping out your window.
At this dosage, you may begin to encounter mysterious entities or feel as if you've manifested
psychic powers. Out of body experiences, such that you have left your body and can float around
your room freely, are likely to occur; seeing your room somewhat illuminated even with the
lights off is also something which may occur with your eyes closed. I find that I can type quite
well with my eyes shut at the third plateau for some strange reason. The entities that you
encounter are generally helpful, giving you feedback on your life and recommendations of what
you can do to better yourself.
DXM "dreams" tend to be rather short. If you ever feel too freaked out by what you see, simply
open your eyes, take a few slow breaths, and try closing your eyes again. If you're anything like
me and my friends, you should be in a different place than you were before.

Time dilution is more pronounced at this state than the first or second plateaus. Time will either
pass by very quickly or very slowly. You'll probably feel even more "floaty" or weighed down at
this dose than you were at the second plateau. It's common for people not familiar with drugs to
be a bit worried about feelings of disconnection from the use of the drug; if you ever find
yourself worried, just tell yourself that you took a drug and that it'll be over in an hour or two.
Drink lots of water!
The fourth plateau
15mg/kg -- 20mg/kg (recommended: 18mg/kg)
This is where DXM gets really freaky. You'll experience strong amnesia, time looping, memory
recall, have powerful closed-eye hallucinations that suck you in completely, and probably meet
some kinds of aliens or angels or what have you. You may experience partial or full ego death -that is, you may feel as if you've died. But don't worry! The fourth plateau won't kill you, but try
to keep your dosage under a gram of the stuff. Don't do this without experiencing the third
plateau a few times first. It can be extremely frightening for those not prepared for the strength of
it. It is comparable to ketamine's k-hole.
You'll probably barf on the come-up, and walking will be very difficult if at all possible. If you
can, find a friend you can keep around to talk with. You may have interesting realizations. You
may appear to pass out to your friend, so tell him to keep in mind that you'll be trippin' pretty
hard.
It is not uncommon to have life-changing experiences at the fourth plateau, but it's not an
experience you'll want to repeat often. I'd recommend doing it once or twice a year, if at all.

Advice
Here is some advice that I have for DXM use, before, during, and after your experience. Most of
the tips I have for you have come from my own experience, but I've also heard some things from
friends and found some from the net.
First, as far as buying cough syrup goes: you don't have to fake a cough to buy it, but you'll
probably need an ID. When you look around in the store for syrups to buy (remember, don't buy
the medicine with more than one active ingredient!), don't worry about any strange looks you
may get, either. I've said this before, but you can explain that you have drug allergies if you get
asked by anyone what you're doing. I've been able to buy five or six bottles of tussin at one store
before, but try to only buy one or two or else you'll risk being denied your purchase. It's easier to
buy multiple bottles at grocery stores than at pharmacies. Travel around if you have to, or wait a
while before going back in and buying more. You really shouldn't ever need to buy more than
three bottles for a trip anyway.
When you want to prepare for your trip, try not to eat anything for a few hours before you take
your drug. If you want to travel around in video games in your closed-eye world, try playing a
game you're really fond of for a few hours. Don't take DXM too late at night, or you'll be awake
until morning, as it is a stimulating drug. Try not to drink caffeine on the day of your trip, or if
you do, wait until the effects wear off to take the DXM.
Drink the syrup slowly or swallow your pills one at a time every minute or two. The slower you
take in the drug, the more likely you'll be able to have hallucinations or mystical experiences. It's
also likely to reduce nausea. I've found that taking one or two pills of Benadryl (just plain' old
Diphenhydramine, no secondary ingredients) greatly reduces any nausea that you may
experience.
DXM takes about an hour or so to come on. While you wait, turn your lights down and turn on
some music you enjoy. DXM often enhances music and makes lights seem brighter. Make sure
to keep a sack around too, in case you get sick. Barfing on DXM usually happens after the drug
has been been absorbed into your blood stream, so don't worry about your trip ending. All that
really happens (other than an unpleasant taste) is that your stomach will feel better. Barfing
doesn't happen for everyone, and if you can manage to resist the urge to throw up, I've found that
the need to often ends about ten or twenty minutes later. When your eyes begin to cross, lie down
and close them. The plateau lasts for about four hours.
DXM mixes well with Benadryl. In addition to reducing nausea, taking a significant dose of the
stuff (diphenhydramine, and again, make sure it's the only active ingedient) with your
dextromethorphan results in a more powerful and slightly different trip. Try taking 300mg of
each at the same time and seeing where that takes you. Some people are allergic to
diphenhydramine (Benadryl) so try taking two pills a few days before and see if you get really
itchy. Getting sleepy is normal, but as DXM is quite stimulating, the stuff won't knock you out
during your trip.

Finally, if you ever start feeling anxious or bad during your trip, simply remind yourself that you
took a drug an hour or two back and that pretty soon its most severe effects will be over. This
may sound like dumb advice now, but if you take a take a third or fourth plateau dose, tell
yourself that you're not going to die!! Mild effects may linger for a few hours or even a day or
two later, but this is normal and usually pleasant.
If you are going to be consuming a large amount of DXM, it is recommended that you pick up the
ingredients needed to extract DXM and to learn the process of extraction. I will cover DXM extraction in
the next chapter.

Extraction
Tasting syrup is gross, and there's no gel caps around in your area. What do you do for a less
miserable way of consuming DXM? The answer: you extract it from the syrup.
There are two ways to extract DXM, depending on which kind of syrup you purchased. If you
want to extract dextromethorphan HBr (most cough syrups), you use a technique called Agent
Lemon. If you have DXM polistirex (the kind in Delsym), you use a much simpler technique.
This page's details are based on the information at the dextroverse, among other resources.
When you extract DXM, do it on the same day you plan to take it because it will break down into
DXO, resulting in much less of a trip.
Agent Lemon
What you will need:











Cough medicine with DXM HBr as the only active ingredient (though for once, guaf is okay)
Clear, non-sudsy, plain Ammonia
Pure Naphtha (try Zippo lighter fluid)
Lemon juice
Soda bottle (go for two liters)
Glass bottle or jar
Gallon zip-lock bags
A measuring cup
Scissors
A nail, thumbtacks, or tape
Glass kettle or microwavable bowl
Have you gone shopping and picked up all of your materials? Good, let's begin. Pour your cough
syrup into an empty soda bottle and add an equal amount of ammonia. You can use a measuring
cup for this or refill your old cough syrup bottle. Seal your bottle up tight and shake it well for
about five minutes. Wash up your measuring cup really well if you choose to use it.
Now, add some of your naphtha to the bottle. You should add it to your foul brew in an amount
as a ratio of 1:8 -- so if you used 4oz of syrup and 4oz of ammonia, pour in 1oz of naphtha.
Shake this time for another five minutes.
Pour your mix into a zip-lock bag and nail, tack, or tape it to a wall by the top corner. What you
are going to do now is wait for the layers to clearly separate; this can take between five and ten
minutes. There's no harm in waiting fifteen minutes to just be safe; just wait long enough for the

layers to clearly separate with no bubbles. Wash your bottle and measuring cup out well while
you wait.
The top layer will be Naphtha and DXM, while the bottom layer will be ammonia and the rest of
your syrup. Take your bag off the wall and carry it by a top corner over to a sink, where you get
the hot water running. Cut a very tiny hole in the bottom of the bag so that the fluid drains out
slowly. Make sure the pink liquid is all out, as it is highly toxic! You should let a little bit of
the clear layer drip out just to be safe.
Once all of the pink is gone, and a little bit of the clear gunk has dripped out, pinch the bottom
corner and carry your bag back over to your glass jar or bottle where you will begin the mixing
process again. Add an equal amount of lemon juice as the amount of naphtha in the bottle -- so if
you used 1oz of naphtha, use 1oz of lemon juice. Shake this hard for five more minutes. When
you finish, pour the mix into a new bag.
Pin this bag up by its corner as you did before. Wait until the layers clearly separate, like before.
Unlike before, this will probably take between fifteen minutes to forty-five. Just be patient; go
off and do something to pass the time. Sometimes the separation isn't as clear as you'd like; make
sure to do the next step in a well-lit room if you can.
What we want now is the bottom layer of the bag, which is DXM and lemon juice. Snip another
tiny hole in the bag and let almost all of the bottom layer to drip into your glass pan, jar, bottle,
or kettle. Make sure to pinch off the bag just before it all leaks out, just to be safe, as
naphtha is toxic (just like the ammonia). Pour the naphtha (top layer) down your sink.
You can drink what you have now for an experience that's a little better than drinking syrup, but
you can do better by microwaving the bowl for intervals of 30 seconds or boiling it on the stove.
Keep the heat somewhat low so your DXM doesn't splatter out! Every few minutes, take your
pan off the stove and shake it a little bit.
Once you feel you have boiled enough lemon juice out, pour what you have left into your soda
bottle and put that into the fridge. Wait an hour or two, and your extracted DXM mixture will be
fit for consumption! It'll taste a lot better if it's cool. Congratulations, you have just extracted
DXM.

Delsym Extraction
What you will need:





Delsym (3oz or 5oz bottle)
Soda bottle (a liter or two)
Zip-lock gallon bags
A nail, thumbtacks, or tape
Scissors
This method is a lot simpler than the Agent Lemon method of extraction. Simply pour your
Delsym into the soda bottle and fill the rest up with a bit of water. Shake the mix up hard for five
to ten minutes, then pour it into your ziploc bag.
Pin a top corner of the bag to your wall. Now, let this mix sit undisturbed for two or three hours.
After three hours, you won't be able to get any more DXM from the Delsym, but you can do two
hours if you're really in a rush.
Carry the ziplog bag and your soda bottle to the sink. Snip a very small hole in the bottom corner
of the bag and let the bottom layer of goop drain into your bottle. Let the water go down the
drain.
You have now extracted Delsym! I recommend mixing the goop with orange juice or watering it
down.
