just what you need!

This brochure also describes in detail what you can expect in terms of
accessibility. From the front door to the toilets: everything has been
researched and assessed at the location itself. Only the best and most
accessible accommodation in Flanders is included in this publication.
The choice of accessible accommodation is increasing and becoming more
varied every year, a positive trend that we naturally applaud. Therefore we
have split the brochure into two parts. At the moment, you are consulting
the brochure that provides an overview of all the accessible hostels and
youth and group holiday centres. You can find an overview of all the
accessible hotels, guestrooms, holiday houses, camping areas and holiday
centres in the other brochure. You can of course request both brochures.

Frequently asked questions
In the brochure it says that this
accommodation has a shower chair or seat,
but it isn’t shown in the photo. Is this right?
It’s possible! A movable shower seat or shower (wheel)chair is
placed by the operator when it is needed. If you don’t find a seat
when you arrive, don’t hesitate to ask one of the staff. Someone
probably just forgot to put it there. Some support rails are also
removable and are positioned during your stay.
I need more details. For example: is there sufficient
space under the bed for a hoist, and what other
facilities are provided? Where can I find this?
During the on site inspection we collected a great deal of information.
There are therefore more details available than what you read in the
brochure. The staff of the Accessible Travel Info Point have these extended
descriptions to hand and will be pleased to give you the necessary
information. If you would rather find this out for yourself, you can find all
the inspection data at www.toevla.be
An accessible building is one thing, but I also
need care on holiday. Where can I go to for this?
In Flanders, 11 holiday homes with an accessibility label are
currently offering a care framework. This can mean that you
will find facilities such as hoists or hospital beds, and that
you can call on care staff (nursing, assistance). Some houses
have their own personnel available for this, for others the
necessary assistance is hired externally. All information about
the accessibility and care framework at Ter Duinen, Zorgverblijf
Hooidonk, De Ceder, Vakantiehuis Fabiola / ’t Mechels Bos,
Vakantieverblijf De Dielis, De Pupiter, de Wijn-Auberge,
Vakantieverblijf Middelpunt, Zorghotel Gezondheidscentrum
Koninklijke Villa, Villa Rozerood and B&B Altijd Genieten can be
found in both All In brochures. If the accommodation you are
looking for is not featured in this brochure, please feel free to
request the other brochure!

Am I welcome with my guide dog or
assistance dog?
In Flanders and Brussels assistance and guide dogs are in principle
allowed in all public places, even where an ordinary dog would
not be accepted. Some addresses in this brochure gladly stress
that they welcome dogs, also ordinary dogs. These are identified
with the
symbol. But even when this is not explicitly stated,
at least part of the building will be open to people with a
disability and their assistance dog. As their owner, it’s best if you
let them know in advance, so that your companion gets a dogfriendly welcome.
Which addresses have sufficiently
accessible rooms for our group?
At the back of this brochure (p. 143) is a table with
an indication of the number of accessible beds at
each location. This will certainly help you to find a
suitable address.
Good to know: adults can sometimes also stay at
a youth holiday centre. In general, youth holiday
centres are aimed mainly at children and young
people but often you can also go there during
certain periods with your socio-cultural association
or other group with adults. You will often find a
larger accommodation capacity there that is also
accessible for people with a disability.
Why doesn’t the brochure
mention the prices for
accommodation?
Some holiday destinations have a price
per room, while others have prices per
person or per group. Special discounts
and rates may also apply, or different
rates depending on whether you book
for the low or high season. This may lead
to confusion. For this reason we have
omitted this information. You can find
recommended prices on the websites

Flemish label for accessible tourism
Since the beginning of 2008, there has
been an accessibility label in Flanders
for hotels, holiday centres, youth holiday
centres, camping sites, guest rooms, tourist
information offices and visitors’ centres.
This label implies obligations. It is awarded by
Visit Flanders after a thorough examination
on site according to the Accessible Flanders
methodology.
Specially trained accessibility supervisors assess the accessibility of a
building or exterior environment for diverse forms of disability. This
data is entered in the database and given a score (+, ±, -) based on the
measurement results for the parking area, the entrance, the reception
area, the sanitary facilities, etc.
Only those elements that are objectively measurable and essential to
the accessibility and usability of a building are given a score. These often
concern aspects that are important to wheelchair users. If, for example,
a bathroom door is too narrow, even the best furnished bathroom is
inaccessible to some.
If you have a different disability or impairment, you will certainly
appreciate your holiday address if you are able to easily manage on your
own. These items are also paid attention to during the assessments.
They are mentioned for information purposes in the report.
When awarding the accessibility label to a hotel, youth accommodation
or holiday centre, we pay attention to the access walkway from the
public road, the entrance and the reception area, the communal
toilet, the restaurant or the dining room and the bedroom with
corresponding bathroom. For group accommodation, we also assess
the accessibility of the multipurpose room. For a camping area, we
look at the parking facilities with access path, entrance and reception
area, and the sanitary facilities. In tourist information offices and
visitors’ centres, we inspect the access path and the entrance, and also
the counter, information displays and interactive appliances.
The toilets in a tourist information office are not assessed because
their main function is to provide tourist information. Of course, we also
assess the corridors between these components for all buildings.

Based on the results
obtained, the label
distinguishes three levels.
Label A+ means that the building
scores positive (+) on the components
mentioned on the previous page. It
satisfies strict accessibility standards
and is accessible such that the visitor
is comfortable and independent.
When granting the label, deviations from the scores are possible.
In case of doubt, we examine the actual situation again on site and
test potential bottlenecks with a standard wheelchair.
The results of the evaluation are presented to a committee
especially established for this purpose. The label committee consists
of representatives from the disability movement and the tourism
sector. In the end, it is this committee that decides which label a
building will be awarded or what conditions must first be fulfilled.
Finally, a label provides an important first impression, but never
says everything. A full description is available on www.toevla.be
(in Dutch) for each of these addresses. You can also request this
from Visit Flanders. If you have doubts concerning whether the
accessibility offered meets your personal requirements, carefully
read this information beforehand.
You can also directly contact the building of your choice to discuss
items that are not clear beforehand.

advisable to read why a + was not

The informative label (arrow in the
circle) only indicates that this building

help, then the holiday building
receives a negative score (–) for this
component. In practice, this problem
especially applies to wheelchair users.
For visitors with a different type of
disability or lighter motor impairment,

NIEUWPOORT: ACCESSIBLE SEASIDE CITY
Accessible Nieuwpoort
The Municipal Council for the Disabled has published the brochure
‘Accessible Nieuwpoort’ for many years (available in Dutch only). It lists all
public services, car park spaces, accommodation, addresses for accessible
healthcare, cafes and restaurants (with adapted toilet), etc. that are
accessible for wheelchair users. The brochure includes information about
the ‘Zon, Zee…Zorgeloos’ assistance project, the four beach wheelchairs,
Tiralo sea wheelchair and wheelchair bike, and the accessible municipal
swimming bath with pool wheelchair and pool lift. The brochure is
available for free from the tourist services of the city of Nieuwpoort.

There are two reserved parking spaces near the
entrance. The access paths are level or have an inclined
ramp. You may require assistance on the ramp to
the entrance and on a ramp inside. The museum lift
provides adequate space; the one in the visitor centre
is 105 cm wide and 122 cm deep. Most rooms offer easy
access. You may require assistance with the experience
elements. There are two adapted toilets, but the space
for manoeuvring is limited. The information boards in
each room of the museum also display the information
in Braille. The field with the ruins is partly accessible
to wheelchair users thanks to the specially installed
inclined surfaces. You will require assistance in this area
as well as to negotiate the surface of the paths.

fisherman’s family, the heroic Iceland fishing-boat sailors and the
shrimpers on horseback, a unique living tradition in Oostduinkerke.
The rich museum collection brings together the heritage, art, crafts
and natural surroundings of the North Sea. The museum has a lift, a
specially adapted toilet, and is easily accessible. There are just a couple
of thresholds in the fisherman’s hut. The new sensory aquarium is
also accessible. There is a small step at the entrance to the Herberg
de Peerdevisscher tavern. The entrance to the specially adapted toilet
is on Vrijheidsstraat. Space in front of the toilet is limited to 79 cm.
However, there is adequate space next to the toilet.

EVERYONE’S CYCLING!
Westkans has investigated the accessibility of at least 360 km of cycle
network along the Belgian coast. You can find the routes that fit your
particular needs at www.iedereenfietst.be (available in Dutch): without gravel
or cobblestones, rest areas with benches or accessible toilets, without slopes,
etc. The information is useful for all cyclists, not just those with hand bikes,
wheelchair bikes, tandems or bicycle trailers. In addition, the website has
been expanded recently with information about cycling routes elsewhere
in West Flanders, as well as in Flemish Brabant. The West-Vlinderen app
also provides you with accessible cycling routes in West Flanders. The West
Flanders Skeelergids (skating guide, which can be found in Dutch on
www.westtoer.be) provides information about suitable routes for hand
cyclists and of course, skaters.

STEP IN
More and more coast tram stops are becoming accessible for everyone.
These stops are shown on the plan of the coast tram route at
www.dekusttram.be with a wheelchair logo. The trams themselves have
a lowered central section, so that you can get on and off more easily as
a wheelchair user. Each stop is also visually and audibly announced and
some stops are already equipped with guide tiles and lines and braille
posts. With “Ticket naar Zee” (Ticket to the Sea), Westkans has mapped
out the most accessible routes for eight coastal municipalities, from the
tram stop to the beach. The map-brochures are available from De Lijn
shops where the routes begin and at tourist information offices along
the coast. You can also download the maps and print them from the
website www.westkans.be/nl/projecten/ticketnaarzee (in Dutch).

Thanks to the initiative of ‘Zon, Zee,… Zorgeloos’ (literally, sun, sea
and carefree) a “beach area” and an area in its immediate vicinity
is accessible to people with a disability in Nieuwpoort, Ostend,
Vosseslag, De Haan, Wenduine and Zeebrugge. During the months of
July and August, you can ask assistants for help. In addition, there is
an accessible toilet and a specially adapted care room with a hoist,
adjustable height bed and shower, beach mats and beach wheelchairs.
There are parking places nearby for the disabled. ‘Zon, Zee ... Zorgeloos’
is a joint venture by the Province of West Flanders, the Intro non-profit
association and the coastal towns concerned.
EXPLORE!
A visit to Ostend is definitely worthwhile for families with children,
schools, and other groups of children. Young and old are welcome in
the brand-new Explorado Family Adventure Science Park to explore
the “World of Explorado”. This adventure and science park combines
spectacular attractions with educational, interactive exhibits, Clever
Shows and exciting programmes for children’s birthday parties. Young
and old alike are treated to tons of science and adventure. Having fun
makes you smart!
A large part of Explorado is accessible to wheelchairs. The entrance
door is somewhat heavy and the threshold is 3 cm high. The hallways
are sufficiently wide, and there is only one narrow 90 cm wide spot on
the first floor. The lift is spacious. Most of the experience elements can
be used quite well from a wheelchair, although there is not always knee
space available. The Apollo 3000 attraction does require transferring
from your wheelchair into the special chairs. The Richter 7 attraction
has a number of steep inclines. The cafeteria is also accessible. There
is limited space to manoeuvre a wheelchair under the tables. There is
a spacious adapted toilet with a support rail, but there is only 71 cm of
space next to the toilet bowl.

Four stunning and fully accessible cycling routes have been mapped
out in the Province of Antwerp, three in the Antwerp Kempen and
one in Scheldeland. It was not only the cycling routes that were
addressed; accessible places of interest and eating and drinking
establishments (with or without adapted sanitary facilities) in the
area surrounding the cycling routes were also added. The result
is a great total package in which the cycling routes form a loop
with the departure and finish points located where there is accessible tourist accommodation. This means that people with reduced
mobility can also enjoy a weekend break or short holiday. The
routes are accessible to hand cyclists, but people that tire quickly,
parents with bicycle trailers and tandem cyclists will also enjoy

WALK IN THE MINERS’ FOOTSTEPS
C-mine expedition is a unique experience trail that will awaken all
your senses. This adventurous journey will immerse you in thrilling
stories about the mine in all its aspects. C-mine expedition starts
in the C-mine site’s Energy building, where the visitor’s reception is
also located. First you descend to a depth of six metres, at which
point you see all kinds of remarkable installations. It’s your time to
shine in the interactive sound cell. Produce your own mine “sound”
using levers, buttons and wheels, or soak up the atmosphere while
you wander through the maze on your way back up to the surface.
Afterwards, those that want and are able to to can climb the
gigantic and original 60 m-high mineshaft tower on the square.
The doors are somewhat heavy to open yourself, but the visitor
reception and the expedition are easily accessible. The counter has
a lowered section under which you can manoeuvre a wheelchair
and there is adequate circulation space all around. There is also
enough space in the lift to the compressor room. You can descend
to the expedition using an adequately large platform stair lift. The
experience elements and the corridors are easily accessible. The
mineshaft tower is not accessible to wheelchair users. The café is
also easily accessible, although the tables are only 68 cm high. The
adapted toilets are spacious enough and are fitted with support
rails.

EXPLORE THE NATIONAL PARK ALONG THE
ZANDLOPER PATH
The Zandloper path is a fully paved, 1.5-km long nature experience
path, located in a unique natural setting in the former “Berg” white
sand quarry. First and foremost, the Zandloper path was created
especially for wheelchair users, but it is also suitable for young
families with pushchairs and people that have difficulty walking.
You are introduced to different biotopes in the Hoge Kempen
National Park while on the path. A bird observation wall, platform
and several additional physical challenges make this tour all the

In the Gallo-Roman Museum you will discover the many

MADE TO MEASURE SPORTS
The Sportimonium takes you through 150 years of sport in Belgium. Extraordinary photos and posters,
fascinating objects, sparkling trophies and humorous sounds and images show how sports evolved in many
ways into a social phenomenon in the 20th century. The Museum of course also includes items belonging to
legendary sports heroes, such as Eddy Merckx, Jean Marie Pfaff or Tia Hellebaut, to admire.
The sports museum is easily accessible for wheelchair users. The traditional sports offered in the
sports garden and those in the sports lab can be played by wheelchair users and the visually impaired.
The ‘Sportimonium Anders Bekeken’ (sports from a different viewpoint) programme gives the visually
impaired the chance to visit the museum with their family, friends, companions or in a group. A permanent
exhibition includes sensory boxes and audio systems to help you understand the history of sports. The
‘Measuring Up to Athletes’ activity can also be enjoyed by those with a visual impairment, but is less accessible
to wheelchair users. An adapted toilet is provided but the free space beside the toilet seat is only 64 cm wide.

BREATH HISTORY IN ENAME
The Provincial Archaeological Museum at Ename
throws light on the history of the Flemish Ardennes, in

MIRROR OF AN EVERYDAY WAR

Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is the impressive
witness of more than four years of a violent war.
The largest evacuation hospital on the Ypres bend
was located in the area called Lijssenthoek. 10784

is situated in the woods of
the Central Limburg Park, a
few kilometres from the main
entrance of the Provincial Park
of Bokrijk. They have 2 meeting

On the banks of the Dender
river, in a rural corner of the
De Gavers provincial park,
some 100 beds are ready
and waiting for you in a 17th
century farmstead. Bicycles
can be left in the cycle shed.
If you have not brought
bicycles, you can rent them
from De Gavers. From May to
September, there is also sailing,
surfing, climbing, canoeing, etc.

Today, the historic warehouses of the legendary
shipping company with the red star on its flag serve as
a home to the Red Star Line Museum. Here, the story
is told of the millions of Europeans that were brave
or desperate enough to leave behind their old lives in
search of a better one. On an emotional rollercoaster
of high expectations and deep disappointments,
coursing adrenaline and sleepless nights, it embarks
in the direction of the dream that becomes a reality.
Or not? The former Red Star Line’s port warehouses
are the ideal setting for making the story of countless
travellers tangible and visible. Their dreams and
aspirations are brought to life in this inspiring
environment.
The museum is easily accessible. Assistance is
required here and there, such as when opening the
rather heavy doors. The museum reception desk is
partly lowered, but it is not possible to manoeuvre
underneath. The exhibition begins on the ground floor.
There is a large lift that takes you to the first floor. The
tower and the toilets are also accessible via a lift. This
lift may be a little narrow for some wheelchair users
(90 x 133 cm). Although the space near the toilets is
limited (81 cm), the toilet is easily accessible for most
wheelchair users. The sink’s rotary knob tap is less
suitable for people with reduced hand function.

M - Museum Leuven opened its doors in September 2009. The impressive,
sleek museum building, located in the city centre, is a real eye-catcher.
The entire building, designed by a top Belgian architect, Stéphane Beel,
integrates existing historical buildings and contemporary architecture and
is constructed around a stately old oak tree in a quiet inner garden. Don’t
miss out on a visit to the Treasury of St. Peter’s Church, one of the finest
examples of 15th century Brabantine High Gothic. The impressive choir
isle has been set up as a museum; the numerous sculptures, paintings and
objects in silver and gold are part of the M collection.
The museum and the Treasury of St. Peter’s Church are accessible to
wheelchair users. The museum has three wheelchairs and twenty portable,
folding chairs that you can loan free of charge, depending on availability,
in exchange for your identity card. It is best to reserve one in advance by email. If you are visually impaired, you
can explore the museum on the adapted “Rijk der Zinnen” (Realm of the Senses) guided tours. The subject, angle
or the way in which the artworks are approached changes every two months. You can find the dates of the “Rijk
der Zinnen” guided tours on the website. Reservations are required. If you would like an existing tour for a target

Museum Dr. Guislain aims to use its unique past and setting, where the
first psychiatric institution in Belgium was founded, to conduct a debate
on “what is normal, what is abnormal and how a society deals with this”
in a multifaceted and contemporary manner. The permanent collection
of the Museum Dr. Guislain consists of three components. The first
component is the history of psychiatry, the second is the photographic
collection with photographs from 1860 to the present day, and the
third is the collection of outsider art. This has evolved from a modest
collection with work by people with a psychological disorder into a
highly extensive collection with works by artists that each approach art
from a “different” perspective.
The museum is easily accessible, although the door is difficult to open
without assistance. Several corridors to doors in the exhibition room
are on the narrow side, but are usable. There are two accessible toilets
with adequate space and support rails. Circulation space is narrow in
the toilet in wing two. The café is easily accessible. Guided tours for
the visually impaired are possible. A sign language interpreter can be
arranged by appointment.

A DIFFERENT VIEW OF PSYCHIATRY
MADE-TO-MEASURE MUSEUM
The Made-to-Measure Museum is for people who are
often neglected in terms of cultural activities: the blind
and visually impaired, the deaf and hearing-impaired,
people with a low income, newcomers to Belgium,
homeless young people, people with a mental and/
or physical disability, psychiatric patients, people with
an immigrant or ethnic background, etc. The Made-toMeasure Museum offers tailor-made tours, creative routes,
workshops and theme activities. The purpose of the
Made-to-Measure Museum is to ensure that everyone has
an equal opportunity to visit the museum in a personal
and adapted way, irrespective of their disability, culture,
language or other impairment. It targets four audiences
with a specific offering: Equinox for the blind and visually
impaired visitor, Sign language for the deaf, hearing
impaired and sign language users, Comet for people with
a mental and/or physical disability and Sesame for people
in economic, social or cultural difficulties.
Made-to-Measure Museum organises its activities inside
and outside the walls of the Royal Museums for Fine

The dynamic and ambitious Photo Museum exhibits
and archives photos. In addition, the museum
invites a photographer every month to comment
on his or her work. You can take a guided tour or
follow a workshop (for young and old). Visit the
permanent collection and discover the history of
photography.
You may need a push up the ramp to the entrance
door. All exhibition spaces on the different floors in
the museum are accessible but the show cabinets

Historium is an experience attraction. You will step through lifelike sets in which film, music and special effects
combine to create a magical experience. And you can travel back and see an exciting love story during the golden
age of Bruges. It’s more than seeing and hearing. You actually smell and feel how life was in those days. Thanks to
the audio guide, you experience everything in your own language.
You enter via an alternative entrance with lift. The story follows a fixed route. Wheelchair users must leave the
route at several locations to take the lift. The alternative route is more difficult to follow, and you may need some
assistance at the doors for the log-in system and the deep recesses. 1 person is allowed to accompany a wheelchair
user inside for free, and assistance is provided when leaving the route to use the lift to the second floor. The

and Gypsies were brought together
and put on a train to AuschwitzBirkenau. Less than 5 percent
survived. An impressive museum

back to life. Every visit evokes
sorrow, distress and makes you
reflect. The museum building is designed by the well-known Belgian

Linkeroever was designed
as weekend and camping
accommodation for 100
people. It is located on the
banks of the Linkeroever, on
a site occupying 4,000 square
meters and borders an open
play area, forest, outdoor

and a green walking path that
follows the Scheldt and leads
you, via three playgrounds and
the pedestrian tunnel, to the

Do you need nursing during your stay? Then you can best contact a home
care service. The largest organisation for home nursing, with departments

Do you need specific equipment during your holiday? For large and small aids in
the vicinity of your accommodation you can, among other things, go to the home

Accessible railways
Belgian Railways provides assistance services for entering and exiting trains
in 131 stations. To be sure that the service can be provided, you must book
your journey 24 hours in advance. You can make a reservation by calling
+ 32 2 528 28 28 or using the online form. All information, including special
rates, can be found at www.belgianrail.be under “Stations and on-board
services”, or in the brochure ‘Guide for persons with reduced mobility’.

Get away with the buses and trams of De Lijn
The Flemish transport company De Lijn is also concerned with accessibility.
However, wheelchair users must book their bus or tram ride (return) at least one
day in advance in order to check whether the stop and the vehicle are sufficiently
accessible. You can book this service via the dial-a-bus centre in the province of
departure. You can find the contact details on www.delijn.be section De Lijn,
Offerings. For all other questions, call +32 70 22 02 00. You do not have to book
the coast tram. On the website www.delijn.be/kusttram (Travel Information,
Locations and Stops) you can find an overview of the accessible stops. Are you
unsure and looking for an easy way to put your questions to the driver or
someone else? Blue Assist gives you this option. Take a look in advance at
www.blueassist.eu (in Dutch).
Below and above the ground with the MIVB (Brussels)
The metro in Brussels provides personal assistance during rides.
It is recommended to call 1 day up to minimum 1 hour in advance on
+ 32 70 23 20 00, or fill in the form on the website. You can find this form and
information about the accessibility of the metro, trams and (mini)buses at
www.mivb.be, under the section Your Journey > Accessibility. Accessible metro
