Bradpole Ringing Centre - Young Ringers’ Morning.
In West Dorset most church bellringers are nearer to 60 than 16. Those that are younger tend to be
isolated in towers far apart and so it was decided to hold a fun ringing morning just for them on 10th
January 2015. In the event 10 young ringers came from all over West Dorset with ages ranging from 12
-17 years old, accompanied by parents and ringing teachers. The Ringing Centre at Bradpole lends
itself well to this sort of activity, easy access, lots of space in the church and the opportunity to silence
the bells for training purposes.
After a welcome from The Revd. Janis Moore and refreshments of chocolate brownies and hot
chocolate, the ringers split into 3 groups to try their hand at ' handbell line dancing', 'firing' and ringing
nursery rhymes on the simulated bells and a ringing quiz. Their parents and teachers also joined in.
There were lots of laughs and even more chocolate in the form of prizes for the best efforts.
The youngsters have all expressed an interest in meeting again and so the Ringing Centre looks
forward to welcoming these enthusiastic young people in the future.

AN INTERESTING FACT - a Survey undertaken by the CENTRAL COUNCIL OF CHURCH BELL RINGERS has shown that the average age
of ringers is increasing with fewer children coming through to replace them. The average age of the 10 ringers at this session was 14 years
old. Even if only half of them continue ringing until they are *Basil Dent’s age of 91years that will be 77 years each in which they can pass on
their skills to future generations of ringers. If we can encourage them to develop good habits and knowledge to pass on that would be a
fantastic legacy. (*Basil was a helper at this session - with three youngsters from his own Tower at Burton Bradstock)

What can we do, what can you
do to make a difference? The
people of Bridport made a
difference to some this
Christmas. What can we do
long term for Bridport?
This if you like is the Golden Rule*
of Christianity, it is what Jesus told
his followers to do. It is what the
ideal society could be based
around, one where people think
about others before they think of
themselves, that we all, no matter,
our status, role, education, watch
out for our fellow human being, but
likewise we are secure in knowing that someone is
watching out for us – idealistic, yes, possible, maybe.
But there was glimpse of it in Bridport before
Christmas.

Day Lunch
We would like to say a huge
thank you to everybody who
helped on the day or contributed
towards the Christmas Day
Lunch. It is so wonderful to have such a cheerful
and hard-working team of people, who will to
give up their day.
Also, thank you and apologies to all those who
kindly offered to help, but as we are limited to
space, we had to say no, this time.

Two articles concerning Cupboard Love appeared in
the Bridport News, and the response of the people
and organisations of Bridport was truly amazing, the
generosity of people popping in tins of food or
Christmas goodies to St Mary’s or people knocking
on the rectory door with cheques or cash was a truly
humbling and overwhelming experience. Those of us
involved in Cupboard Love were truly blessed how
the people of Bridport responded, not with a hand
out, but with a hand up for those needing help over
the Christmas period, thank you! Like I said it was a
glimpse of what Jesus wanted people to do, Do to
others as you would have them do for you!
As I’m writing this it has just
gone past New Year, and
probably by the time you
are reading it, it will soon be
Lent! After giving up bad
habits in the New Year,
probably the resolutions
have been broken and we have fallen back into the
old patterns, well the good news is that the church
provides you with another opportunity if you want to
stop something because in Lent, we traditionally deny
ourselves something – Chocolate, Sweets, Sugar or
something that is our little vice.
During January, February and March 2015,
I will be caring for the people in the Golden
Cap Team because The Revds. Stephen and
Jane Skinner are taking a time of study leave.
However, I will not be moving to Lyme Regis
and my contact details for pastoral issues,
baptisms and weddings etc. will remain the
same. I will continue to attend both DCC and
PCC meetings and lead some services in the
Bridport Team. Above all I will be praying for
you in my daily prayers and my personal
prayer calendar. I return to the Bridport Team
on March 29th – Palm Sunday.

However, recently the churches in the UK have been
saying rather than denying yourself something, take
something on. Now that is not encouraging you to eat
more, but to create a new habit for yourself, one that
will help you and maybe someone else. I like that,
rather that denying ourselves, we take a risk and do
something different, we take something on, we do
something to help us and others, we try to be the
change rather than complain nothing happens.
Maybe that could be sitting quietly for a short bit, to
check that you are ok, rather
than running yourself ragged,
maybe it could be offering
some time to an organisation
that needs volunteers, maybe
increasing giving to a charity
you support, or start to give
to a new charity. These are a
few of the things we can do to change us and others.

For all the unsung volunteers,
For those who don't just stand and stare,
But offer up their time and care.
For those who never count the cost,
But run to help the ill, the lost,
For those who work with quiet grace
To make this world a better place.

The Truth Trail
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
FRIDAY 6th March 2015
Last year when on a
short holiday our son took
us to the Waterperry
Gardens near Wheatley,
Oxfordshire and there we
came to one of their
marked out walks called
the Truth Trail. The walk was a very pleasant stroll along the
river bank and as we walked we came across a number of signs
such as “Self-control”, “Meditation”, “Modesty” and altogether
we passed 13 such signs which aroused my curiosity. As we
left the gardens, passing through the gift shop, I found a full
explanation of these signs which I repeat here for you to ponder
on their message.

The first service of the day takes place on the
Island of Samoa as dawn breaks. The world is
then circled in prayer for 36 hours.
The service is celebrated in over 170 countries
The Truth Trail is part of a conversation that takes place in the
story of Mahabharata.
Once a king asked a sage “How do you recognise the Truth?
How may one practise it? How may one acquire it and for what
gain?”
Everyone is most welcome to come and share

This, in turn, led me to ask who or what is this Mahabharata. So
it was a trip to Mr Google for the answer, and via the
Encyclopaedia Britannica found out this ‘little gem’ of useless
knowledge to be stored up for the next quiz night.

important source of information on the development of

Rev'd Peter Clark’s West Bay Wallow Experience
The day dawned. Not bright, warm and dry as I’d hoped but
cold and wet. But I was committed. I had my plan together
with towel, dressing gown and anorak and lots of
sponsorship (including one of £100 if I did it without a
wetsuit - thanks Alby - you’re a REAL friend!) So I wasn't
going to back out now.
I registered and stood, hunched and miserable, surrounded
by jolly, enthusiastic mad people who seemed to be looking
forward to entering the grey and clearly freezing water! I
am usually a jolly extrovert but this was somehow not me!
And then it all changed in an instant! A cheerful voice
suddenly burst through my grumpiness. “Aren’t you the
Vicar at the United Church? It’s me! We met at the
Christian Aid Lent Lunches!” And it was Lorna Johnson someone I knew. And suddenly I wasn't alone. “Quick,
quick,” she said, “Come and get my husband to take a
picture of us. I’m so glad I’ve got someone to do this
with.” Which was exactly how I felt. I wasn't alone and I
didn't have to do this alone.
FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN
• February can be a lazy month. If
•
Strange that isn't it? Surrounded by a load of people with a
common cause and focus and I had, until that moment, felt
terribly, terribly alone and desperately lonely. It was
supposed to be a bit of fun but it simply wasn't because I felt
on my own. It made me wonder, funnily enough if that is
what it is like for some folk in church? We assume they're
part of the group, one of us, and yet unless they’re
embraced and have someone to talk and share things with
them, they're just as alone as I felt on that West Bay slipway
(though in truth not quite so ridiculously dressed!) Think
about that next time you see a solitary person in church - it’s
possible they might feel more included if you ‘do a Lorna!’

Anyway, with mood lightened and wonderfully enthused, we
shuffled down the slope and, with much squealing and
groaning, we were in the freezing cold water. Except
‘freezing cold’ fails completely to describe it. It was
appalling, it was dreadful it was … the coldest I’ve ever
felt!
•
My arms and legs went numb despite my fast strokes to
acclimatise to the temperature … and just got worse. I
turned around and found to my horror that my fast strokes
had taken me what seemed like miles away from the
slipway. Every ounce of my energy was then expended
swimming back with my brain full of panicky (and cold)
thoughts.
When finally I could stand it was like heaven. The
exhilaration of success flushed me and warmed me and reenthused me. I had done it and, as I looked around so had
over 100 mad crazy folks
including mad, crazy Lorna
(not as crazy as me as she
had a wetsuit!!) who had
been helping wetsuit-less
folk out of the water. At
least I hadn't suffered that
indignity and more than
that, I had done it! I may
have mentioned that before
but it did feel good! Also I had raised over £400 for
Stepping Stones Preschool! So a huge thank you to so
many generous folk!
“See you next year,” said Lorna.
“Never, never, never!” I replied. And I mean it … probably!

you have kept up to date with
winter pruning and clearing,
there is not a great deal to do. The risk of frost
means it is too early for planting and the most of
the plants that are already in place are still
dormant. But if you are itching to get back out
there, February is a great month to prepare for
the rush of spring.
Sweep away the last of the leaf fall, discard pots
cracked by frost, take those piles of plastic pots
you know you will never use to Groves for
recycling, sweep the cobwebs away from the
shed and the greenhouse, give away the tools
you haven’t used for years. And dispose of
responsibly ancient bottles of feed and herbicide
that have probably lost their efficacy and in any
case very likely fall foul of some recent piece of
EU legislation. With the shelves cleared, you are
now ready for the sun.
Rake the beds clean ready for mulching and bulb
planting.
If weeds become visible as you clear, winkle
them out before they really get going.
Take your newly sharpened secateurs to
climbers such as wisteria and vines, both of
which will become rampant unless kept in their
places. Cut back the leader (main stem) and
prune back the side-shoots (laterals) by about a
third of their length to ripe wood or two buds. Also
cut sub-laterals to within two or three buds.
Check any wires and ties are holding up.
Prune back deciduous grasses left for winter
interest before the new grass starts to appear.
Prune winter-flowering shrubs such as winter
jasmine and heathers.
Prune apple and pear trees while they are still
dormant. Then mulch with well rotted manure or
garden compost talking care the compost doesn’t
touch their trunks.
• At the end of the month, prune summer
flowering clematis and buddleia.
• More and more people are choosing to start a

kitchen garden or add vegetables and fruit to
their herbaceous borders in the style of early
cottage gardens. If you have a spare bed in
the sun, weed and dig it over, add a good layer
of mulch and get ready to sow. Then make a
planting plan.
Plant new rhubarb crowns now. Start chitting
early potatoes, standing them on end in an
eggs box and leaving them on a sunny ledge
in an outhouse.
Cut autumn-flowering raspberry canes to the
ground to stimulate new shoots.
Give the lawn its first short, back and sides of
the year. Keep the mower on a high setting at
first. Then give the grass a nitrogen feed.
Buy summer-flowering bulbs, such as Gladioli,
Tigridia, Galtonia, Eucomis, Anemone, lily
and Acidanthera

Lady Chapel Kneelers
Ladies who love to sew have got together twice in the
past to create new colourful tapestries for St Mary’s
Church. First of the four large kneelers for the main
altar, then the individual kneelers and now they have
completed two new kneelers for the Lady Chapel.
Our Advertising Manager retires
shortly. We need a volunteer to look
after all aspects of advertising in the
Bridge.
These kneelers are much narrower than those for the
main altar so it was decided a good subject to depict
would be the buildings opposite the church in South
Street. Photos were taken and time was spent in
studying the different colours of the stones, brick, tiles
and slates used in construction. The slope of the road
had also to be taken into consideration as the outlines
were drawn to show position of doors and windows and
heights of roofs.

Bradpole Men's Breakfast
Up to nine of us met each week in the new meeting
room at the back of the church or in the colder winter
months we were glad to meet in Judy’s home. We
carefully put the doors and windows in their right places
and then had the fun of mixing colours to create the
illusion of different building materials. No two houses
were the same.
On Saturday January 10th at 8.30am 18 men sat down
to a full English breakfast. After we had eaten and drunk
coffee and tea, Pete Stone led a discussion on how to
make Church more relevant to our community. It was
good to have this opportunity to get to know each other
and to have time to talk among ourselves about those
things that interest and concern us. We would also like
to add our sincere thanks to those wives who spent time
slaving over a hot stove to give us such a hearty meal.

row of houses. Oh what joy to finally finish the boring
side pieces and to join up the kneelers and to see the
completed kneelers blessed and put to use at a

The Charity Collection at Holy Trinity in February is for
the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. This is a vital
emergency service which saves lives, but it costs
£4000.00 a day to keep the helicopter flying. With no
Government funding the charity relies on fund-raising,
so please support our collection if you can.
Munch Club runs in Church House every Friday
from 12.30pm except on 20th February which is
school half-term.

This year, the feast of Candlemass, or to use its other
name, The Presentation of Christ to the Gentiles, is on
Monday 2nd February. Bringing this forward, there will
be a special service to celebrate Candlemass on
Sunday 1st February at the 9.30am service
You may have seen in the paper or heard on the
radio that St John’s has been placed on the
English Heritage At Risk Register.
In the letter sent from English Heritage, it says
“Inclusion of a place of worship in the Register is
absolutely not a criticism of those responsible for
the building or those that manage it. Rather, it is
an indication that those who caring for an important part of the
country’s heritage are facing significant challenges.”
Candlemass day has long been associated with the
weather law.
The legend suggests that if the Christmas decorations
were not down by the twelfth night, then they should
come down at Candlemass. There is a rhyme for this:
If Candlemass be fair and bright, Winter will have
another fight.
If Candlemass brings cloud and rain, Winter will not
come again.
Down with Rosemary and so down with Bay and
Mistletoe.
Down with Holly, Ivy all, wherewith ye dressed the
Christmas Hall.
We indeed are, the sloped south roof has nail rot, and the flat
roof at the side and rear of the building is significantly leaky and
water is dripping through to the walls, damaging the décor and is
near the electrics, the walls are crumbling as a result. We are
hoping to start remedial repairs to the roof in April.
We are applying for grants and have had firm offers of financial
assistance from other sources, which we are truly grateful for.
Thanks are due to those who made the church look
so lovely for Christmas.

arranged the flowers. The arrangement in the porch
was very beautiful.
Those who decorated the Christmas Tree.
The lady who provided the lovely new straw and the
ladies who decorated the crib and arranged the nativity scene.
Many people remarked how lovely it all looked.
Please don’t panic, we are not going to stick a thermometer
outside St John’s asking for money for the roof, but what we are
needing to do is think about the long term stability of the
building.
Once we get the water out of the building we can start to dream
dreams. Decorating it, improving the kitchen facilities, upgrading
the lighting and heating, all things to make it a working living
building, not just for us but for generations to come.
So please watch this space, we are considering other money
raising schemes to help us improve the building – friends of St
John’s being one and being on the all-risk register means we
can apply for grants not normally available to other places of
worship, but while we can apply for funding and we can spruce
the building up, there is no point unless people come and use it.

The Carol Service led by our Church Choir was very
well received.
The nine lessons and many of our favourite carols
reminded us that Christmas was a very special
birthday.
The choir had worked very hard and there are always
vacancies for new members. Joining a choir can be
very rewarding, the fellowship, the singing and a good
opportunity to learn to read music.
Choir practice is at 7pm on Thursday evenings in St
Swithun’s Church. For more information contact our
organist on Bridport 405482. You are assured a very
warm welcome.
We are a friendly bunch that meet on a Sunday, we are a bit like
pets, and we aren’t just for Christmas! But seriously we want St
John’s to be used by the community, not just as a place of
worship, but as a place for concerts, exhibitions and community
events for the West Bay community.
St John’s is a wonderful peaceful place in the hustle and bustle
of the Bay. You only have to read the visitors book to see the
wonderful comments about the building to realise what a place it
has meant to visitors.
St Swithun’s Prayer Circle will meet on the 1st
and 3rd Tuesday - the 3rd and 17th in church at
2.30 - 4pm. New members are always welcome to
join the circle for this quiet time, when we pray by
name for those who are ill. After which we enjoy a
cup of tea together.
We warmly invite you to join us on a Sunday if you are free. But
we also invite you to please think, discuss and pray with us,
what we can do with the building, and can you help us? We don’t
just need money, we need you.
