South Coast: 198.7–363.0
198.7 - Carter Lake Campground,
Taylor Dunes Trailhead
Oregon Dunes NRA campground. The
trail is wheelchair accessible the first 1/2
mile and has a view of the lake.
199.1 - East Carter Boat Ramp
200.8 - Oregon Dunes Day Use Area
Turn west off Hwy 101 and travel 1/2
mile to the overlook for views of the dunes
and ocean.  A recreation pass required.
202.5 - Tahkenitch Lake
The lake is much larger than it appears
from the highway. Less than a mile of the lake
fronts on Highway 101, with long fingers
extending inland for miles. This stretch is
part of the Oregon Dunes NRA. At milepost
202.5, a variety of loop trails with creek views
range from 1 to 6 miles.
203.4 - Tahkenitch Landing
The Tahkenitch Boat Ramp is a
half mile north of Tahkenitch Landing
Campground, which has campsites and
a boat landing. 
203.6 - Tahkenitch Campground
Tahkenitch Campground is on the east
side of Hwy 101 and accepts reservations.
Open May through September. A 3-mile
trail leads to Threemile Lake.
Frank Moore
Ambassador for fly-fishing in The Land of Umpqua
www.UMPQUAVACATION.com
Just a short distance from Roseburg, Oregon, you’ll find 33 miles of water designated just for fly-fishing,
all of it located along the spectacular North Umpqua River. What are you waiting for?
For a free visitors guide to our land, call 800-440-9584 or visit www.landofumpqua.com.
209.4 - Gardiner (ZIP 97441)
This community on the estuary of the
Umpqua River was named after a Boston
merchant whose ship wrecked near here in
1850. A walking tour encompasses historic
houses, a pioneer cemetery, and the little
Episcopal Church overlooking the city.
The Tsunami gallery has a bronze foundry.
Douglas County maintains a boat ramp on
the river; there is limited adjacent parking.
210.3 - Smith River
The Bolon Island Boat Ramp is maintained by Douglas County.
211.2 - Umpqua River
Among Oregon rivers, the Umpqua is
second in size to the Willamette, and is navigable by fairly large vessels as far upstream as
Scottsburg. The Umpqua River bridge is
the state’s largest swing-span bridge and was
designed by McCullough.
211.4 - Hwy 38 Junction

For a scenic drive from Winchester Bay,
take this road that follows the shoreline on
the south side of Salmon Harbor. Across the

Old Town district is a center for art galleries,
shops, and great dining places. More great
dining is along Beach Loop Drive. The chamber office and visitor information center are at

285.8 - Coos/Curry County Line
È Cape Blanco Lighthouse, near
Port Orford.
287.8 - Langlois (ZIP 97450)
This small community has antique
shops and limited tourist facilities.
288.9 - Floras Lake
Ill-fated Lakeport, a community born
from the belief that Floras Lake could be
a major shipping point for Oregon Coast
products, disappeared after the discovery that
the lake could have ocean access only through
expensive locks that would have drained the
lake. Today there is access to a boat launch
and the lake is popular with windsurfers.
Boice–Cope County Park has camping sites.
Á 293.5 - Blacklock Point Trail (3.5
miles round-trip, easy)
Turn on Airport Road, continue 3
miles to gravel parking area. Trail parallels
airport briefly, bear left at both junctures
with Oregon Coast Trail, continue through
forested areas to open grassy point with
180-degree ocean view.
295.7 - Sixes River
The Sixes is the northernmost of the
rivers from which America’s Wild Rivers
Coast gets its name. The others, going
south, are the Elk, Rogue, and Chetco in
Curry County, and the Smith and Klamath
in Del Norte County in California.
296.6 - Cape Blanco Access
Cape Blanco, 5 miles west of Hwy 101,
was discovered by Spanish explorer Martin
de Aguilar in 1603. Cape Blanco State Park is
located at the westernmost point in Oregon,

years ago with its awe-inspiring panoramic
vistas and active artistic community that
supports eight galleries. Port Orford was
established in 1851 and is the oldest town on
the South Coast. Today Port Orford is the
northern gateway to America’s Wild Rivers
Coast. The area is a haven for the outdoors
enthusiast: scuba dive in the ocean, windsurf
the coves of Floras Lake, hike and fly fish the
Elk and Sixes rivers. The dock here is the only
open-water port on the Oregon Coast and
is one of six “dolly” ports in the world where
recreational and commercial fishing boats are
hoisted into and out of the water daily. This
town of 1200 offers lodging at state and RV
parks and motels and dining at a variety of
cafes. Port Orford Heads State Park’s historic
Coast Guard Lifesaving Station museum
is open to the public, and visitor information is provided at the historic Battle Rock
Wayfinder Point.
Take a scenic walk on the Port Orford
Wetland Interpretive Walkway, located near
7th and Idaho Streets. This boardwalk has
several viewing platforms to see wood ducks
and hooded mergansers.

The highest bridge in Oregon built in
1964 crosses 345 feet above creek bottom.
To appreciate the structure’s magnitude,
pull into the parking area at the bridge’s
south end. Follow a short trail west for the
best look at the gigantic geometric steel legs
supporting the bridge.

328.0 - Gold Beach (ZIP 97444)
Named for the gold that was found
near here in the mid-1800s, Gold Beach
is located where the Rogue River meets
the sea. Year-round fishing, jet boat trips,
and other outdoor activities for the entire
family make Gold Beach a vacation paradise. This is the county seat and site of the
fairgrounds, where many events are held
year-round. The Rogue River Museum is
in town at the jet boat dock near the south
end of the bridge. Upriver about 10 miles
is the Schrader Old Growth Trail and a trail
to the largest myrtlewood tree on the coast.
328.2 - Port of Gold Beach
Boat marina, municipal airport, cannery building with shops and restaurant,
Sheriff John’s Classic Car & Doll Museum,
and the home port of Jerry’s Rogue Jets.
328.8 - The Event Center at the Beach
This is the site of the Curry County
Fair, held in July, and various functions
held throughout the year.  It is hard
to miss the Civil War-era cannon on the
front lawn of the Curry County Historical
Museum. Closed January, open Tuesdays
through Saturdays (541-247-9396;

and interesting rock formations.
338.0 - Beach Access
A turnout provides access for windsurfers.
339.0 - Pistol River
The small community of Pistol River is
a mile inland from the estuary. Pistol River
State Park has been cut off from the ocean
beach by a change in the river’s course, but
there are picnic tables and some nice areas
for the energetic hiker. A historical marker
next to Hwy 101 commemorates the 1856
Battle of Pistol River.

of local history is in the basement. 
358.0 - Chetco River
The Chetco River divides Brookings
from its unincorporated neighbor Harbor.
The North Bank Road goes up the Chetco
River to nearby Azalea Park and 8 miles farther to Alfred A. Loeb State Park. The state
park is near a trail through a redwood grove.
On the south side, South Bank Road leads
inland to Salmon Run Golf Course. The 18hole course was constructed to preserve the
environment as much as possible. A meandering stream has numerous bridges and is the
biggest hazard for golfers. Salmon actually do
inhabit the golf course. Lower Harbor Road
reaches the Port of Brookings–Harbor. Port
facilities include a marina, port-operated RV
park, a boardwalk, and shops. The chamber
of commerce building is well marked and
offers both advice and brochures for visitors.
360.7 - Chetco Valley Museum
The museum is home to the state’s largest
Monterey cypress, which was planted in the
1850s. Open mid-April through October,
Thursdays through Sundays (541-469-6657).
363.0 - Winchuck Ponds/Peavine Rd
Five miles past Chetco River bridge, turn
east on Winchuck River Road and continue
1.5 miles to graveled Peavine Road. This is a
good route for car birding. At 1-mile point,
park at pullout to see freshwater wetlands
that harbor marsh birds and ducks.

rom the historic town of Smith
River, with its miles of lily fields, to the
Klamath area with its majestic redwoods,
Del Norte County has only one sizable
town: Crescent City, located on a tongue
of land that juts into the ocean.
The town is the gateway to the Smith
River National Recreation Area, famous
for its redwoods and for its miles of scenic
rivers. The redwood groves of Jedediah
Smith Redwoods State Park along Hwy
199 and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State
Park along Hwy 101 between Crescent City
and the Klamath area create awesome scenic
corridors along the county’s major highways.
While driving along the Del Norte
coast, notice the tidal lagoons, favorites of
fishermen and birders. And you can’t miss
the incomparable Trees of Mystery that has
been attracting sightseers since the 1940s.

the United States.

miles off Point St. George at the northeast
corner of Crescent City. A scenic drive
