PMC Medical Coverage on the Weekend
• Medical staff offers basic First Aid only. Any
situation requiring greater attention will be treated
at the nearest medical facility via ambulance.
Please carry the following while riding:
• Prescription medications
• Health insurance card
Hydration
• Please remember to keep yourself well hydrated
before, during, and after the ride, roughly one liter
per hour. A combination of electrolyte solution
(Gatorade, etc.) and water is best.
• Make sure to snack on fruit for potassium and salty
snacks for sodium.
Medical Coverage
2:30 p.m.
High Speed Ferry departs MacMillan Wharf.
Hyponatremia Information
• It is important not to over-consume water. Over
hydration with straight water lacking the sodium
found in sports drinks may result in hyponatremia,
sometimes referred to as water toxicity. This is a
dangerous – and potentially deadly – condition that
can be avoided by switching to primarily drinking a
sports drink that contains at least 100 mg of sodium
after the first 1-2 hours of riding. Be sure to read
your fluid labels as many “sports beverages” contain
far less than this minimum recommended amount.
Dietary Restrctions
• The PMC strives to provide a variety of meals, snacks,
and refreshments to accommodate our riders and
volunteers. However, if you have a specific allergy or
dietary restriction, please plan accordingly.
• Vegetarian options will be available at all of our hub
sites and water stops.
• Peanut butter is a staple of the PMC and we cannot
guarantee cross contamination will not occur despite
our best efforts.
Emergencies
• Please call 911
• Report emergency and or 911 call to 800-WE-CYCLE
15
2
16
Use Signals. Use hand and verbal signals to
communicate with fellow cyclists and with
other traffic.
• Left turn: left arm straight out
• Right turn: right arm straight out or put your
left arm out and up.
• Slowing or stopping: left arm out and down
with your palm to the rear
3
Give Warnings. Warn cyclists behind
you well in advance of changes in your
direction or speed. A group lead should call
out “left turn” or “right turn” in addition to
giving a hand signal.
4
Announce Hazards. Group leads should indicate
hazards (holes, glass, sand, grates, and other )
by pointing down to the left or right, and by
shouting “hole,” “bump,” etc.
5
Watch Out at Intersections. The lead rider should
call “slowing” or “stopping” to alert those
behind to the change in speed. Note that each
cyclist is responsible for verifying that the way
is clear.
6
Watch for Traffic Coming From the Rear. Riders in
back of a group should inform other cyclists by
saying “car back.” Warn of traffic approaching
from the front with “car up.”
7
Change Positions Correctly. Generally,
• Slower riders stay to the right
• Pass others only on their left saying “on your
left” to warn the cyclist ahead of you.
9
Move Off the Road When You Stop. When you
restart, each cyclist should look for, and yield
to, traffic.
10
Riding Two-Abreast. Even where riding double is
legal, single up when cars are trying to pass.
Failure to comply with our rules of conduct,
or behavior which results in the harm, or
potential harm of other riders, may lead to
expulsion from the event.
Rules of Conduct
1.
2.
Ride defensively in consideration of fellow riders.
Communicate with your fellow riders, using
proper cycling terms such as “on your left,” “car
back,” etc.
3. Ride single file and as far to the right of the road
as is safely possible, except to pass. Pass on left
side only.
4. Use proper hand signals when turning. Make left
turns from the center of the road or left turn
lane. Cross railroad tracks at right angles.
5. Do not cross the yellow center line.
6. Obey all traffic signs and signals.
7. Ride in control of your bike at all times.
8. Riding to endanger the safety of your fellow
riders is strictly prohibited.
9. Obey instructions from the PMC Road Crew and
Route Guides and pay attention to information
posted on PMC road signs.
10. Each rider is expected to speak out when
observing a violation. When spoken to, the
response should be in appreciation of the
concern expressed.
Failure to comply with our rules of conduct, or behavior which results in the
harm, or potential harm of other riders, may lead to expulsion from the event.
Road Safety
1
Be Predictable. Other riders expect you to
continue straight ahead at a constant speed
unless you indicate differently.
8
Leave a Gap for Cars. When riding up hills or on
narrow roads with traffic, leave a gap for cars
between every three or four cyclist.
Road Safety
Mandatory Requirements for Participation
• Helmets (US CPSC-approved) must be worn riding.
• Headphones, iPods, and radios are not permitted
while riding.

OR LICENSE AT REGISTRATION TO RECEIVE
YOUR ID BRACELET.
Volunteer Check-In
• Volunteers must register at each site prior to their
shift time.
• Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your shift
begins to allow time for parking and registration.
• Volunteers must wear the PMC ID bracelet,
volunteer t-shirt and nametag.
• Volunteers will be given a rendezvous point to
meet crew leaders and other members of your
team.
• ID bracelets are site-specific. If you work at more
than one site, you must register at each site to
receive the proper identification bracelet, which
doubles as your site meal ticket.
• After registration, please report to your crew
leader for an overview of your position.
The PMC infrastructure relies on an army of
volunteers who generously donate their time
and energy to the event. Failing to stay for
your entire shift might unfairly burden fellow
volunteers as well as the riders.

task is complete, find something else to do within
your crew or seek to be reassigned to a crew that
needs more assistance.
• If you are asked to do a task that you did not
sign up for, we ask you to be flexable and help in
the area of greatest need. We do our best to give
volunteers an opportunity to work where their
