Volunteer to Help Educate
Dogs in Rescue
NH&R will be staffing a table at the
Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Show, January 29&30, 2011. We would be very
happy to have some volunteers to help us!
NCNC has a table for breed education, and
NH&R discusses Newfie rescue. Usually
the tables are next to each other so we can
help each other with questions and break
coverage. Please consider donating a few
hours --- Let June Gibson or Hazel Jacoby
know you are willing to help.
Here is a summary of rescue dog activity:
Ruger: Has had his last heartworm
treatment, will be adopted in a month.
Charlie: Has been adopted.
Annie: A 1 ½ year old Landseer, got
her shots, was spayed, and adopted.
Grooming Table Raffle
The Grooming Table raffle was held at the
Christmas party – winner was Summer
Poris! NH&R made $580 from the raffle
and wants to again thank Glenda and Chris
Jones of Linkville Newfoundlands for this
generous donation.
Donations
We would like to thank and acknowledge the following for their donations:

Dog Shows By the Numbers
Yahoo News Story 12/3/2010
80: The number of dogs entered in the
world's first dog show. When a cadre of
hunters got together in Birmingham, England, in 1859 they formed the National Dog
Show that still runs today.
2,000: The number of top show dogs that
appear in the National Dog Show in Philadelphia. The event is broadcast on NBC
right after the Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade; however, the two-day event happened the weekend before.
4,000: How many dogs that competed in
the American Kennel Club(AKC)/
Eukanuba National Championship in February 2010. In honor of the AKC's 125th
anniversary, the normal invitation system
for competitors was waived.
150: The approximate number of breeds
recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Its website has a comprehensive list from
the Affenpinscher to the Yorkshire Terrier.
If you are looking for a specific breed, you
can find them listed on this website.
Whether you want a more common breed,
like a beagle, or the more obscure Xoloitzcuintli, there is information on every pure
breed of dog, including standards.
19: Consecutive years the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular breed of
dog in the United States. The top breeds
listed in 2009 also include the second-place
German Shepherd, third-place Yorkshire
Terrier and fourth-place Golden Retriever.
The German Shepherd made it to second
place on the list for the first time in 30
years.
19,354: The number of dogs entered into
the World Dog Show 2010 in Denmark.
The Best in Show went to a Japanese Toy
Poodle and the event was hosted by the
Danish Kennel Club.
28,000: The number of dogs that participate in the world's largest dog show. Crufts
happens every year in Birmingham, England, and lasts four days with seven classifications of dogs. Gundogs, working
breeds, pastorals, terriers, hounds, toy
breeds and utility dogs are all shown.
13: Times a Wire Fox Terrier has won the
Westminster Dog Show. Second place belongs to the Scottish Terrier, which has
won eight times.
1933: Year the benched competition began
for the AKC National Dog Show. It remains the oldest benched competition in
the world. A benched show means the dogs
remain on assigned benches when they are
not being shown.
1.2 million: AKC registered dogs in 1998.
These dogs came from 550,000 litters.
$225,000: Total prize money in the AKC/
Eukanuba National Championship. Best in
Show won $50,000.
Ten Reason Not to Trust A Newfoundland
10. They will steal your spot on the couch while you are up getting a soda.
9. They will take the treat you give them and bury in the backyard
8. They will jump on your bed with muddy feet. Making you do laundry…again
7. They will lick visitors with an uncontrolled passion only they understand.
6. They will cause children to smile.
5. They will make you feel horrible for not walking them by looking at you with
deep sad eyes.
4. They will look at you like you committed a crime against them if you don’t let them lick your ice cream bowl.
3. They will cause wide spread happiness in large group settings.
2. They will crack you up by shaking their butts so hard you think they are going to snap in half.
And the number one reason why you can’t trust Newfoundlands …
1. They will steal your heart like a thief in the night, showing you complete and pure love that only a Newfoundlands can show.
Meet Your Members
Q. Names?
A. Buzz and Patti Sondgroth
Q. Occupations?
A. Buzz is a retired heavy equipment operator. I worked as a
teller in a bank, 14 years for a gymnastics gym and 2 years as
a veterinary assistant in the breeding program for Canine
Companions for independence. We both are retired and now
watch our two grandsons ages 8 and 4 after school while our
daughter Mary works.
Q. Children?
A. We have 4 children Mary, age 36 who
is married to Dave and has two children Anthony and Dominic she lives
in Chico, Theresa age 34 who is single
and works for Nordstrom and nannies
for a family with two kids she lives in
Redwood City, EJ age 33 who is married to Sissi they live in Bothell WA,
and John Paul. They all love sports
are avid 49er fans and love the San
Francisco Giants. Mary graduated
from Saint Mary's College in Moraga
and Theresa and EJ graduated from
Cal Poly San Louis Obispo. They all
like dogs but think we are way too
involved with ours.
Q. Where do you live?
A. Buzz and I were originally from the bay area. We have since
moved to Chico to be near our grand kids.
Q. Tell us about your Newfs
A. We currently only have one newf. Grand Champion Champion Salty Dog's Sea Breeze aka Breezy. She is a great dog
and we hope to get her VN however, she comes into heat often right in the middle of training for the water or draft tests.
She is a bit of a princess but she comes from a long line of
great working Salty Dogs. She has had one litter of 7 puppies
4 girls and 3 boys. She was bred to Casta Newfs Viva Las
Vegas. The puppies are 15 months old and have gone to families that are interested in working them. Our first newfoundland was also a Salty Dog his name was Natrone and he lived
to be 10 years and 6days old. He was out of a litter from
Beamer and Cleo. Betsy his litter mate is Breezy's great
grandma.
Natrone loved the water and carting we did not get titles on
him because at the time we were still really busy raising 4
kids. He was a great companion for our son John Paul who
was in a wheel chair. He spent many hours at his side just
chillen.
Q. Do you have other breeds or other types of animals?
A. We have one cat Lover Boy aka LB who is white with a black
heart on his side. He bites and is more of threat than any of our
dogs have ever been. We also had a yellow labrador retriever
male breeder from CCI Baja II he has over 200 puppies. 40 of
those puppies are currently working service dogs as well as one
who works for Homeland Security at Atlanta International airport as a bomb sniffer. Sadly we lost Baja this summer as well
as Natrone.
Q.
Newf?
How/why did you get your first
A.
We got our first newf, Natrone from
Gabby, Martin, Laurie and Laura. I don't
think it was Buzz and I so much as our son
John Paul who clinched the deal. John Paul
was in a wheelchair and when we went to
"meet the dogs" (I have learned since this
means be interviewed as a possible candidate
to get a puppy) all of Gabby and Martins dogs
loved John Paul and took turns being next to
him or putting their paws in his lap. I was the
one who originally wanted a newf and Buzz
will tell you he likes them because you don't
have to bend over to pet them.
Q.
What types of activities do you enjoy
doing with your Newfs?
A.
We enjoy all aspects of owning a
Newf, vacuuming, washing down walls for those spitball slobbers and picking up the random cardboard box that out of the
blue they decide to tear up. We also enjoy showing, water work,
draft work and I would love to get involved with therapy or the
reading program where children with reading problems read to a
dog. I think Breezy would love that. I am also interested in
obedience I think Breezy would do well not so sure if I would.
Q. Why did you join NCNC?
A. We joined NCNC to meet other Newf owners, and learn about
the different working dog activities. We have not been disappointed NCNC is a great group of people with lots of information to share. If you want to show your dog there are people
who will help you with grooming. For water work and draft
work and obedience Gabby, Martin, Laurie, and Laura have
been amazing help. The NCNC and all the people we have met
through the club have become an important part of our life.
NOTE: Patti and Buz are applying for General Membership
and are being published in this issue.
