SIlver Bay dog show, Sat. Feb 24: The great and powerful Oz is Best of Breed.
The Right Stuff
By Larry Anderson
’Glad I’m not a judge. It seems to me, some of our Newfies
EXCEED the breed standard! How on this green earth could I
ever decide which one is closest to the standard? Configuration,
gait, personality, coat, size – the list is daunting. I would simply
have to say “I like that dog!” and hope not to have to defend
my decision. Could I ever be a judge at a dog show? No way!

The Right Stuff (continued from page 1)
The cxcitement started on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007
at the NCSD-sponsored Regional Specialty at
the fairgrounds in Del Mar. Pam Morgan and
Joyce Rowland have two new Newfy pups,
Olivia and (guess!) Spencer. Olivia won the
6-9 month bitch class. Then the Barkas’ Mia
won open black bitches. The Youngers’ Terra
was best veteran bitch, and Heidi Forrest’s Luke
represented the working dogs. Joan McAdam’s
Bravo was high-scoring Newf in obedience.
At the big Silver Bay show on Saturday, Feb. 24,
it was all about OZ. Mary Milton and Jon Stahley’s
big boy took Best of Breed in front of a wildly
cheering NCSD rooting section. Joan McAdam’s
Bravo qualified in the Rally Novice B class with
97 pionts. Then on Sunday, Bravo got a perfect
100 and also completed obedience for his CD.

The Hellands’ Willie wins Best of Breed at Scottsdale.
Not to be outdone, Bob and Jackie Helland’s
Willie won Best of Breed on March 4, 2007 at
the Scottsdale Dog Fanciers Association show.
The Del Sur show at the Del Mar fairgrounds
on March 17-18, 2007 saw the Wucherers’
Mariner win the open dogs class on both
days and best of opposite sex on Sunday.
All-in-all, NCSD continues to show that our
Newfies have got the right stuff!

Temporary Newf Rescue Homes
Would you love to have a Newfy, but don’t
want to commit to a lifetime of care?
Got room for a second (or third, or…) Newfy,
on a temporary basis?
Need a little something new and unexpected?
If so, maybe you would be willing to be a
potential Newf Rescue Foster Home!
We are in need of a group of folks that we
can contact on short notice to take care of
a Newf in need – maybe for a few days, or
weeks, or…
We don’t often run into Newfoundlands in
need of immediate rescue and care in our
area. But if we do, we really need to have
some folks we can call upon to step up and
help with housing a dog until we are able to
place it in a permanent home.
If you have room in your heart and home,
please drop a note to Jen Craig at:
[email protected]
or call her at 760-746-6513.
Thanks for NCSD’s Specialty Show
My wonderful Newfoundland Hummer,
Karazan H2, was fortunate enough to
win Winner’s Dog at your Specialty Show in
February.
We are from Northern California now, but
I was a resident of San Diego in the 70’s
and 80’s. It was a very special show for me
and my friends, and we had such a nice
weekend.
I just want to thank you and the entire club
for your fabulous hospitality and beautifully
organized show, and if there is someone to
whom I can post a written letter, I would be
most happy to do so.
We hope that you and your dogs will join us
for our regional specialty in Dixon, California
in October. It’s an outdoor show, but it’s a lot
of fun!
I very much enjoyed your website!
Thank you,
Claire Silsby

NCSD’s Newfy Walk on the Beach
By Esther Hofer
Sunday March 11 was a glorious day, pictureperfect for a stroll on the beach. Our group
was small (maybe due to the beginning of
Daylight Saving Time?) but the Newfs’ energy
and excitement were evident at Powerhouse
Park and along the beach in Del Mar.
Newfs in action. There was plenty of action
going on at the beach: Newfs swimming
and romping in the water, retrieving balls,
chasing each other, not to mention sand
flying, drool flinging and water spraying on
all the folks. We had fun. It was a great day.
Participants included Barbara Schmidt with
Elvis, Eric and Nancy Wolf with Onslow,
Monte and Shelau Howard with Rubee
and Merlin, and Esther Hofer and Jose
Magsaysay with Tilly. New NCSD members
Bob and CeCe Guyatt met us halfway down
the beach, bringing son Bryson, Newfs Dibs
and K.C., and Bernese Mountain Dog Zoe.
Other folks heard about the dog walk through
the NCSD website. (Thank you, Sid, for
keeping the website up to date!) Rita Lewis
brought her six-month-old Irish spotted Newf
Jackson to mingle with NCSD Newfs. A
couple from El Cajon, Sam and Catherine,
also came to meet Newfies. Currently, they
are researching the breed and want to see

Kendall with James, Best in Show
Sandra and Kendall ringside at Westminster
So our daughter, (Erin) Kendall, the future
veterinarian, won a scholarship from the
Westminster Kennel Club, which included
a free trip to the big show at Madison
Square Garden! How exciting! Even more
exciting: she invited Mom to go with her! The
Westminster officials took a personal interest
in their six vet school students, making sure
they received royal treatment. I was only
too thrilled to tag along to all the parties
and special events. Of course our favorite
part was seeing and meeting so many of
the country’s top show dogs. We were there
to see Jefferson and Michelle (Ostermiller)
Scott win best of breed during the Newf
judging Monday morning. That afternoon,
I joined Charma Hill in the stands to cheer
on Adrienne as she guided a beautiful kerry
blue terrier to an award of merit, and later
ran into Gigi Griffith getting off an elevator.
Meanwhile, her hubby, Kim, had taken best
of breed with Joyce Rowland’s lovely little
cattle dog, Rebel. It was fun watching them
together in the group ring Tuesday night.
Kendall and I actually had front row seats
that evening! Directly across from the bestin-show judging. Afterwards came the best
moment of all, meeting James, this year’s
big winner. All in all, it was a once-in-alifetime experience. (Even worth the hassle
of being stranded in New York for three days
after the show while our airlines shoveled
out from under the big winter storm.)

New Member Profiles
By Esther Hofer
Bob and CeCe Guyatt
Residence: Oceanside
Occupation: Bob is the Director of Global Marketing and
Sales Development for a medical device company. CeCe
previously worked as a veterinary tech / office manager for 14
years and then as a real estate sales manager in new home sales
for 11 years. In the past year she has become a stay-at-home
mom for 12-year-old son Bryson and the “fur kids” (and is
“loving every minute of it.”)
Dogs: The Guyatts were inspired to get a Newf after taking a
trip to Central America. They fell in love with a Newfy who
was a greeter at a restaurant in Costa Rica. Subsequently, they
got two Newfies within the last year: Watchbear’s Dibs and
Watchbear’s Katherine Claire (K.C.) Both Dibs (16 months)
and K.C. ( 8 months) are female Landseers. Dibs is being
shown in conformation. Rounding out the canine “fur kids” in
the Guyatt household are Mac, a male Bull Mastiff, and Zoe, a
female Bernese Mountain Dog.
Newf- related goals: CeCe states, “I am very interested in
starting water work with my Newfs. I would also be interested
in helping out with the rescue work if there is a need. My goal
is to find some acreage to start a top of the line daycare and
boarding facility along with some type of service to help the
senior citizens with pet care.”
Jennifer Vampola and junior members Kai Kroeger (age 13),
Lindsay Vampola (12) and Marina Kroeger (10)
Residence: Fallbrook
Dogs: Jennifer and family have a 7-month-old black female
Newf, Bella of Green Gables, who goes by Bella-Marie. In
addition, they have a 10-year-old yellow Lab. They are currently
attending obedience training classes with Bella-Marie.
Newf-related goals: “We would like to look into therapy work
and water titles.”

Minutes of the NCSD Board Meeting
Wucherer Residence, January 21, 2007
I.
Call to Order
JoAnn Wucherer called the meeting to order at 10:15 a.m. In attendance: Gina Anderson, Steve Barkas, Jen and Tim
Craig, Chris Ferguson, Denise Jones, JoAnn Wucherer and Joe Wucherer.
II.
Minutes
The minutes of the November 19,2006 board meeting were read. The minutes were accepted as read.
IV.
Treasurer’s Report
Joe Wucherer reported that the balance as of January is $8,807.27 in the regular account with $7,840.43 in the rescue
fund for a total of $16,647.70. There are no outstanding bills, but we will have some expenses with the regional show.
Joe reported our CD in the amount of $5,054 comes up for renewal on March 11. We can renew it for 6 months, until
September, at the rate of 3.25%. If we choose a 12-month CD, the rate would be higher. Gina proposed we take the
renewal until September. Steve seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The treasurer’s report was accepted.
V.
Committee Reports
Conformation: Joe said that the Silver Bay show and our specialty on Friday, Feb. 24 are on schedule. Gina will correct
the date for the Meet the Breed booth and the board authorized $400 for the booth, with a total of $750 for all such
activities during the year. Members suggested we send a thank you gift to the participants. Motion by Joe, second by
JoAnn .The close date for show entry is Feb. 7. First place trophy still needs a sponsor. For exhibitor gifts, we will double
up on the toy order, using the same ones for the water test. Chris reminded us about ordering lunches at $7.00 per lunch.
A notice will go in NewfWaves. Responsibilities are: trophies – Linda & JoAnn; stewards – Esther & Nancy; judges
hospitality- Jose; photographer- Kitten Rodwell; grounds – Steve. All set ups at the show begin on Friday.
NewfWaves: JoAnn requested that we publish only approved minutes in NewfWaves. We will publish approved minutes
after the board has voted on them.
Rescue: Tim and Jen brought up the issue about the requirement that all breed clubs should have rescue activities. But it
is a question of insurance because most companies do not want to insure rescue. JoAnn suggested that the NCA should
take over the insurance for rescue activities since our current insurance does not cover this. It was suggested that we could
merge that activity with SoCal for insurance purposes. Jen read a list of items needed by SoCal. Steve proposed and Chris
seconded that we send $500 each to the veterinarians, Dr. Mabley and Dr. Gaby Cohen. Motion passed. Jen will get the
correct addresses. Northern Cal got a litter of 9, all needing medical care. Included were 5 intact males. The bill so far
is $4,000, and the NoCal club has set the adoption fee to $500. We adjourned briefly to executive session to discuss the
rescue policy on aggressive dogs.
Working: Steve is looking for volunteers for the water test committee. He will check with Sandra Younger, an experienced
water test chair, and ask her to recruit a secretary.
Programs & Activities: Chris suggested we have the walk on the Del Mar beach on Sunday, March 11 at 10:30 am. Meet
in the Powerhouse Park across from the old train station. We chose Saturday, April 7, the day before Easter, for the annual
spring egg hunt and party in San Dieguito Park. Event starts at 11 a.m.
Newf Boutique: We need a new person to manage our items and sales. Sherry Thomas was suggested. Chris will ask her
and Jo Ann will call to explain the responsibilities.
History: Chris has met with Larry and they are building a full set of old NewfWaves.
VI.
Old and Unfinished Business
Joe has ordered the new business cards. Membership information requests will be directed to Esther.
VII. New Business
Since Ed Malz has resigned, we need a new board member. JoAnn moved and Gina seconded that we make Jen the new
member, especially since the board makes a number of decisions about rescue. Thanks to Ed for his service will be in
the next NewfWaves. The club will pay for the rescue chairman to join the SoCal club. Tim proposed we have a Newf
club email list. Steve motioned and Denise seconded. Joining the list is voluntary. The next board meeting is on Sunday,
March 18 at 10 a.m., location to be determined.
VIII. Adjournment
JoAnn adjourned the meeting at 12:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
