Labour’s Tribute to
Jack
Dear Guests,
On behalf of the over one million members of the Ontario Federation of Labour, it
gives us great pleasure to welcome you to tonight’s celebration of a great friend of
the labour movement, Jack Layton.
Jack was a giant of a leader. His compassion, idealism, intellect and wisdom
helped to shape Canada. He was a fighter whose progressive vision cut against
cynicism and inspired many that change was possible.
Jacks’ positive message resonated with ordinary people who have dreams of a
better life and his unswerving vision for economic and social justice prompted
millions of people to have hope for themselves and their children’s future.
The OFL share’s Jack’s dedication to a fair, equitable and prosperous Canada and
we will continue to draw inspiration from his fighting spirit. To honour Jack’s vision,
the OFL will be erecting a bronze statue of Jack Layton riding a tandem bicycle
on Toronto’s waterfront. Proceeds from this evening’s event will go towards this
touching monument.
We would like to thank the many volunteers, photographers, service providers and
staff who worked tirelessly to make this memorial a success.
And we thank you, our guests, for your participation in this event. Through the
many generous donations that you and hundreds of others have given, Jack’s
legacy will be immortalized through a permanent statue that generations of
Canadians and visitors to our nation can share.
Yours in love, hope, optimism and solidarity,

The OFL has been working with Olivia
Chow to ensure that Jack’s legacy
lives on in the hearts of Canadians by
erecting a memorial statue in the city
that Jack loved and served.
Jack’s love of bicycling is legendary and
he shared his past-time with his wife
and children on their signature tandem
two-seater bicycle.
A master sculptor has been hired to
create a life-sized bronze statue of Jack
sitting on the back seat of a tandem
bicycle, with room on the front seat
for visitors to have their picture taken
“riding with Jack.” No one will miss the
significance of Jack riding in the back
seat of the bicycle because Canadians
know that Jack always had their backs.

The City of Toronto is supporting this touching memorial by donating land on Toronto’s waterfront for
the monument to be erected.

The memorial statue will be erected
at the entrance to the newly minted
Jack Layton Ferry Terminal on
Queen’s Quay at the foot of Bay
Street.
The ferry terminal is the gateway to
the Toronto Island - a treasured public
park that Jack staunchly defended
during his career as a city councillor.
It is estimated that 2 million people
will see the sculpture every year.
THe sTaTue
The statue willl be cast in bronze and will be sturdy
enough to support visitors eager to ride on the front
seat of Jack’s tandem bicycle. It will also feature a
plaque describing Jack’s legacy and listing the name of
the platinum level sponsors whose generous donations
made this monument possible.
The miniature maquette depicted here shows what the
final statue will look like when it is cast by MST Bronze.

No public leader in our time connected so vibrantly and personally with Canadians of all
ages and regions. With his substance and his style – and that smile that you knew came
from the heart - he broke through decades of misconception and wariness of the NDP,
setting Canada on a clear path to a government in 2015 that will always put people first.
Union Calling was honoured every time we were asked to help bring
Jack’s message to Canadians. Every call was a great success. People
listened, from “Hello” to “Goodbye for now.” We’re still listening Jack.
And we will carry on.

at the age of 61.
Jack Layton inspired the nation with his relentless hope and sunny optimism.
First as a university professor and then as a politician, Jack distinguished himself
through his activism on economic justice, human rights, homelessness, aboriginal
issues, health care, environment, AIDS, poverty, violence against women and public
transportation. However, he has become best known as the NDP Leader who
doubled the party’s electoral success and transformed the NDP into the Official
Opposition for the first time in history. Battling cancer and recovering from hip
surgery, Jack led the party to unprecedented success, riding a wave of optimism
that has the potential to unite the country.
Jack left us with a parting message of love, hope and optimism that will continue to
provide inspiration to generations of Canadians.

We are pleased to be a platinum sponsor of the Jack Layton Memorial Statue,
which is a lasting tribute to a leader of great vision and integrity.
Jack Layton throughout his long political carrier stood up for values of the vast
majority of Canadians. He was not only a voice for working families but he stood
up for those in our society who struggled daily to achieve the lives they deserve
as Canadians. Jack understood that through progressive politics and organized
Labour, workers would have a stronger voice on the job. By standing with Unions,
he stood for higher standards for workers, businesses, families, the environment
and public safety. These standards ensure a middle class and endeavors to
establish an economy that works for everyone.
Jack is missed, his vision lives on in so many ways and this tribute organized by
the Ontario Federation of Labour provides all Canadians with a place to reflect
on his words of wisdom “Love is better than anger - Hope is better than fear and
Optimism is better than despair.”
Thank you for the opportunity to be part of such an important Canadian project.

Canada’s Greatest Public Transit Champion
Jack Layton was eternally passionate about the vital role of public
transit in making Canada a better
place for all. He never stopped reminding people about its benefits:
It reduces environmental stress. It
creates jobs. It makes more land
available for people instead of cars.
It gives those who can’t afford or
don’t want cars access to more
job opportunities and wider social
and cultural lives. It is one of the
most important aspects of urban
economic development. It brings
people together. Let us carry on his
vision of a National Public Transit
Strategy.

INSPIRATIONAL
LEADERSHIP
Jack Layton believed that by working together Canadians could build a more prosperous economy and a
society that shares benefits more fairly.
Jack understood and supported the critical role that labour unions play in this struggle.
Labour unions have worked diligently for decent working conditions, just treatment, a fair share of the
economic pie and a better life for our children and grandchildren.
These tireless efforts mean that all Canadian workers enjoy major basic rights, including:
t FNQMPZNFOUTUBOEBSET
t XPSLQMBDFIFBMUIBOETBGFUZ
t DPNQFOTBUJPOGPSJOKVSZPOUIFKPC
t QFOTJPOTUIBUQSPWJEFEJHOJmFESFUJSFNFOU
t QSPUFDUJPOBHBJOTUBSCJUSBSZPSTVCKFDUJWFNBOBHFSJBMBDUJPOT
Unfortunately, these hard won rights are once again the target of some politicians and big corporations, and
unions are under attack because they are recognized as the last line of defense for fundamental workers’ rights.
They inaccurately label unions as the cause of today’s tumultuous economic problems and demand that
unions reduce hard won worker benefits as their contribution to dealing with the economic effects of
globalization, off-shoring jobs, the international debt crisis, climate change, and growing competition
from emerging economies like China and India.
This fight will continue and Jack, we are inspired by your leadership, and your vision of equality, justice
and opportunity.
