We are celebrating our 20th Birthday by launching our brand new website and brochure. It seems a very short time ago that we started the company – in the last recession. And now we are back in another one! Thankfully, with your loyal support, our business is as brisk as ever. Perhaps you support us because of our timeless and beautiful designs – drawn on classic principles. Or because we are able to customise pieces for you. Or perhaps because of the choice of finishes we offer. Or our prices? Perhaps it is because nobody else really seems to do quite what we do? Perhaps it is all or most of those things. For whatever reason – thank you. Our Gustavian style blends well with all types of interiors. A pared down Swedish interpretation of French designs from Versailles at the turn of the 18th Century. It works in so many different settings – large or small houses, relaxed holiday homes, professional offices – modern or traditional. Whether painted or unpainted, it never looks dated. We also offer a bespoke service – we can vary our own designs for you, or work from your designs. “Affordable Architect-Designed Furniture Built From Sustainable Hardwood By True Craftsmen. Bespoke Options Available Combined With Good Old-Fashioned Service” Our ironclad guarantee: We have great faith in our products. You keep telling us about the quality of our craftsmen’s work. So here’s our guarantee for all your purchases from now on. If you are not happy with any item you buy from us, other than items which have been painted, customised or made on a bespoke basis for you – at any time – for any reason, simply return it to us – in the condition in which you bought it – for a prompt and courteous refund. This is our lifetime guarantee. Whatever. Whenever. Always. But to make sure this is perfectly clear, we have decided to simplify it further. Guaranteed. Period. Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 8 Buying on the Internet: Buy ALL of our products, on the Internet. Even the customisable ones. When you want. From where you want. When you place your order on the Internet we give you 5% off EVERY ITEM YOU BUY! We are a small company with a limited number of staff. We have only one showroom. No outside shareholders. And no borrowings. Because of this we do not have to sweat huge overheads. This way, we can keep costs down, provide you with yet better value, and pass on the savings to you. With all of these new developments happening, we intend to remain just as approachable. We welcome hugely your feedback on our products, and we also value greatly your ideas for new products to add to our ranges. We look forward to hearing from you, or seeing you soon. You are always welcome at our showroom in Thrupp where we have greatly expanded our floorspace. We have done lots to it, so do come and see for yourself when you are in the area. If you ring first, we can make sure we give you proper time – to look at our furniture and discuss your needs. We will always have a hot or cold drink ready for you. Warmly, on our Happy Birthday! P.S. I have been asked to tell the story of Scumble Goosie. We have put the story ‘Jon & the Goose’ in ‘Behind the Scenes’ on our website. So, for those of you who want to read it (and the story is quite long, so be warned!) you will find it there… “Thank you very much for the tables. I’m really pleased with them - they’re exactly the look I wanted” Nicola Walker 9 Our ranges We have brought in new ranges, which we intend to develop further in the coming months. Many pieces are kept in stock, and some are to order – which we hope you will agree are worth a short wait. Most are customisable and paintable. We hope you will find our traditional quality thoroughly satisfying. There are nice big pictures, on our website, of each and every one. Quite a lot are also shown painted to make it easier for you. Over the last twenty years, We hope you feel we have been listening to what you like. Currently, we have nearly 100 pieces in our range, and are continually developing more. We will paint them for you, if you like, or you can paint, stain or wax them yourselves. The choice is yours. Our accessories include a screen which has been very popular. The remainder are small pieces which have seen fantastic demand at various times over the years. These are available only in the raw. Once again, you can stain, wax or paint these pieces yourselves if you like. Our MDF panelling has been a remarkable success story for us. We initially developed it to use in our own refurbishment projects. We simply could not find exactly what we were looking for in the builders merchants or shops! We did not realise at the time that so many of you would also love the fact that it looks so much more realistic than other available alternatives. We started selling this product over 15 years ago and it remains – to this day – one of the most popular items in the entire range! So much so that we have introduced new sheet sizes and are now working on a number of alternative designs to compliment the line-up. These will appear as a separate range through The English Panelling company which we are now launching. Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 10 Customising: We can customise many of our pieces for you – by changing their dimensions. If you go the website, look for this tape measure next to the product. If it is there, you can alter the measurements of the piece to suit yourself. For how this works, see Common Questions on page 37. This will explain it for you in detail. All you have to do then is to put in the dimensions you want, and the final price will pop up. It’s that easy. Also, if you have an idea for a piece or a design you would like us to make for you, on a bespoke basis, we are delighted to take most commissions. Painting: We can paint most of our pieces for you in any of our range of six colours – or in a colour of your choice. Look for the image of this paint brush on the website. If it is showing, we can paint that piece for you. Once again, a visit to Common Questions on page 38 will show you the detail of how this process works. You can also see the painted price (as well as the unpainted one) against each product. Ordering: The details of the procedure for ordering is again clearly explained in Common Questions on page 38. Or, if you prefer, go to The Nest (Scumble Goosie’s personalised shopping cart on the website) and just let it work it all out for you. Delivery: If you look against each product on the website, you will see this image of a lorry with a letter in the back of it. Each of the letters A,B,C and D relate to different delivery methods and tariffs. The detail of how these work is clearly explained, once again, in Common Questions on page 38. Alternatively, we always like to see you at our showrooms, if you prefer to collect your furniture from us. Please let us know if you would like to do this. Any Other Questions: If you have any other questions you need answering before making a purchase please just email [email protected]. We hope most of these will be answered for you in Common Questions on page 37. In addition, you might wish to visit ‘The Overall Look’ section on page 30, where we cover just about every detail of the design, manufacture and treatment of all of our pieces. We hope you enjoy our brochure, and happy shopping. “I’m so pleased the table and chair are almost ready - I had thought they wouldn’t be ready until late August/September” Helen Bates 11 erutinruF yranidroartxE emaN yranidroartxE Our Products Our ranges include chests, clocks, storage, tables, beds, mirrors, seating, lamps & accessories. Editor, The English Home. You are constantly telling us how difficult it is to find furniture of a certain size so we are delighted to be able to offer an affordable Bespoke Service. Bespoking furniture for our clients forms an increasing share of our workload. Perhaps this reflects the difficulty you have in finding exactly what you need. Most of our customers are pleasantly surprised by how little it adds to the cost to customise one of our products, or to commission a piece from scratch. We can play on variations of our own designs, or modify sizes of our collection to suit you. We are often asked to design a particular item from an image of an existing piece, or from a sketch. As long as we feel that the piece is in keeping with the work we do, we will create it for you (and maybe even add it to our collection!). All that we ask is that you provide us with a simple sketch or image, and some measurements. erutinruF yranidroartxE emaN yranidroartxE We will take care of the rest, advising you if you require us to. OG ELBMUCS We look forward to receiving your requests and turning them into reality – using eco-friendly methods and materials. Our know-how and your ideas: this is the new Scumble Goosie! Please see “Common Questions” on page 38 for more information on special colours. Our six House Colours are all neutral tones designed to harmonise with most situations, so normally one of these will work. We lightly drag an antiquing glaze over the top to soften the look further, and bring out the details of the various mouldings and carvings that we use. The paint and glaze is then given further protection using a number of coats of satin lacquer. Drawer runners are waxed to make them run smoothly. Handles For handle options, please see “Common Questions” – Handle Options on page 40. The picture here shows the various handles which we use ourselves, or we are delighted to fit handles supplied by you on painted pieces only. We are currently increasing our range of handles and knobs. “Just to say many thanks for the Chest of Drawers, we are very pleased with it.” Debbie Guage 27 Panelling Our reeded panelling is one of our signature products that has grown in popularity from one year to the next. We wanted to replicate traditional Georgian “Butt and Bead” jointed wooden panelling in sheet form. But we were also determined that it should look authentic, and not like the thinner alternatives found in many DIY chains. For mail order we supply RP1 in packs of 6 sheets (covers 3.6 linear meters) and RP2 in packs of 4 sheets (covers 2.4 linear meters). RP1 RP2 Bead detail Actual sheet size 60cm wide x 81cm high Actual sheet size 60cm wide x 122cm high (Dado and skirting not supplied) 28 (Please note: We do not supply skirting or dado) Together with a local specialist, we developed a form of tooling that did the job, and after a lot of time (and some considerable investment!) we perfected the product which we now sell. Made from 9mm thick high quality moisture-resistant MDF, these boards are ideal for transforming hallways and bathrooms. Fix to battens, or if the walls are in good condition simply apply using a product such as Gripfill adhesive. Finally, add a dado rail and skirting board to match existing and complete the look. Work in progress! Finished “Many thanks, Jon. I wish you and your team continued success and growth. It is richly deserved.” Deborah Walker 29 The Overall Look We have been asked from time to time where our design ideas came from and how we created the look we have become known for. We have explained on the following pages. Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 30 The overall look: In principle, you will see two rather different looks: • the slightly fussier French salon or bedroom look; • and the plainer and simpler Swedish look. Influences which have affected our designs: We are not purists! Our influences have been drawn from many quarters: Firstly, the French look, an example of which can be seen in the French 2 Drawer desk to the left (FT6/W). This more ornate look is simplified in the Gustavian pieces. These originated from King Gustav III’s fascination with the French court at Versailles in 1770. A good example of our Empire furniture can be seen in the Empire bedside table below (EM2/W). Some pieces have a Georgian influence – somewhere in the middle of our ranges – a little more regal than the Empire pieces. As an example, see the dental corniced Georgian Bookcase (BK3) on page 21. Simpler influences include the Country look, drawn from peasant furniture, an example being the Country wooden sofa (WS1/A) on page 18. In that vein, there is also the Shaker look which can be seen in our beaded Shaker pegrail (SP2) on page 24. And last, but by no means least, comes your influence. Our ranges would be very much more limited, and a lot less rich in variety, without the many ideas and insights you have given us over the last twenty years. Thank you for all that you have brought to us. “The website is easy to use, the furniture is lovely, and the service has been excellent.” Val Crawford 31 Overall design guidelines: Having qualified as an Architect, I am in charge of design decisions at Scumble Goosie. I have long been aware that pieces need to work in a variety of modern situations. They need to fit larger spaces, as well as smaller more awkward ones. And to go with other pieces within their immediate surroundings. Scaling has always been very important, while maintaining the classical proportions which underly all that we create. Grecian and Roman buildings and temples, with their columns and plinths and other decoration, lie behind many of our designs. This is simply because they are timeless, and so much furniture design has been drawn from their inspiration. I believe that we should try to design great hybrids which are pleasing to the eye, and work in the modern environment. Wherever possible, we incorporate storage into our pieces. Features of our pieces looked at in detail: You can skip this if you find the detail boring (!), but for the historians among you, you will see a variety of mouldings within our designs – Ovolo, Torus, Ogee – which have found their way onto most pieces. Alongside them, there are scoops on many pieces, Cornices – dog tooth, or plainer – on most bookcases, wardrobes and some chests of drawers and mirrors. Plinths – plain or cut out – often appear on our bookcases, wardrobes and chests of drawers. Reeded or fluted pillars are mainly found on our pieces with a Georgian influence. Grooves, reeds and flutes can be seen on many legs: vertical on French pieces, the Gustavian Olivia Chest and Georgian breakfront bookcase, horizontal on Empire tables. Pearl beading can be found on dining tables, mantle mirrors and the Rosen Mora clock and Gustavian demi lune. Finally, our tables have many features such as hand carved flowers, simple fluting, turned or cabriole legs, simple moulded edges, scoop mouldings or pearl beading. Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 32 Fruitwood – A Sustainable Resource: Our furniture is largely, and usually entirely, made from a solid sustainable hardwood – Mango – which is very strong, durable and dense. It is virtually knot free and hard to dent. It does not leach sap and is very stable. It has a fine grain which lends it well to staining or waxing, and of course, to painting. It is environmentally sustainable, starting its life by providing a harvest of mango fruit over many years. It can then be recycled into pieces such as ours. It will usually have one or two irregularities, which are characteristics of the wood itself, and the manufacturing process, rather than defects. These irregularities give it character, and lead many of our customers to like the idea of staining or waxing their furniture. Looked after properly, you will get very many years of good service from pieces made from such a solid and robust wood. “When our furniture arrived, the mango wood was far too beautiful to paint, so I waxed the pieces and they are now the talking point of the room. They have quite transformed it.” Tina Johnson 33 Manufacture – construction and build quality: Our furniture is made by a wonderful factory deep in the heart of Rajasthan in India. For those of you who do not know it, this is an almost unique desert province. Construction of our pieces is carried out near to its awe inspiring capital, the stone walled city of Jodphur with its Umaid Bhawan Palace and Mehrangarh Fort. This is a place which invokes the Raj. We have been very fortunate to find standards of reliability here which are not easily matched in the modern world. We have been lucky enough to develop great relationships with these very reliable craftsmen. They create beautiful pieces for fair prices. We do not exploit them, and they do not exploit us. Giving work to good people, who are capable of creating furniture of great quality, at fair prices, is very satisfactory to all parties. It works for them. It works for us. And thus it works for you. Our factory does not create a mass produced formica look – without a proper design structure – built to an impossibly low budget. Instead, our furniture has a hand made element, just as its fore runners from earlier periods did. We use proper locks, and traditional hinges when you can see them, or adjustable ones where you can not. Even the backs of our pieces are made of solid wood, as are drawer bases and door panels. Our shelves are sometimes fixed, and sometimes adjustable, to suit each particular piece. The timelessness of our pieces: By incorporating such solid construction in our pieces, we are ensuring that they will last for many decades. Not just for a five year trend of the moment. The construction of our pieces enables them to be easily refreshed with just another coat of paint, stain or wax. With due modesty, who else, nowadays, can say this? Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 34 Treatments – painting, staining, waxing: The choice of treatments is of course yours, and yours alone, but may we guide you? As our designs are based on 18th and 19th century originals, a lightly antiqued, or distressed finish, works better than a 21st century mass produced look! As it is largely made in solid hardwood, some like our furniture in the raw, or simply waxed or stained. Many think that the grain in the wood is complemented by such treatments. Others prefer their furniture painted. SCUMBLE GOO Footnote: Extraordinary Name Furniture We would like to finish where we began. We firmly believe that the Extraordinary SG Look embodies a wonderful choice of designs for very long lasting pieces. Most of these can be customised to suit you. They can be finished in a variety of ways – by simple waxing, staining or painting. We also believe that we offer these to you at very competitive prices. Where ordering is necessary, we think that our pieces are well worth a short wait. They are not fashion items, and they stand to last you a lifetime! “Table received and standing proudly in position. Thanks again for the service, we will use your business for our furniture needs in the future.” Ken Hale 35 In the Press... ” I believe homes should be uniquely individual expressions of their owners: creations that continually evolve. Scumble Goosie’s beautifully timeless designs, and fabulously priced bespoke service, allow discerning consumers to avoid homogenous Kerryn Harper-Cuss. Editor, The English Home. ‘trends’ and keep it personal every time. ” 36 Common Questions We find that the following questions are the ones which we are most frequently asked. We have provided them here, with answers, and hope they will help you. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you need any further help or information... Customising of our products to sizes which will suit you! Q: Can you alter the size of pieces of furniture in your range to suit the space I need to fill? A: Yes we can. Just check the code for the piece of furniture you like. If it has a tape measure symbol next to it, then we can customise it for you. This means you can change all three dimensions of those products. Relatively minor alterations can be done on this website and the cost will be calculated automatically for you. The first measurement change, width, depth or height, to 20% of the original size (up or down) adds 20% to the unpainted price. A second change adds a further 5% to the unpainted price, and finally, a third change adds another 5%. Put simply, if you would like to change all three dimensions, you will have added 30% to the listed unpainted price. This is the same whether you increase or reduce those dimensions and if you are having your items painted the extra cost is still worked out based on a percentage of the unpainted prices. If you want to add a drawer to a table or a chest, a shelf to a bookcase or wardrobe, or split a wardrobe so that half is hanging and half shelf space – or indeed anything other than minor modifications to sizes – then please contact us for a quote. “Scumble Goosie’s craftsmanship, service and delivery is terrific!” Kirsty Wark - BBC Newsnight 37 Painting your furniture Q: Does it cost more for us to specify a special paint colour? A: We charge a flat fee of £25 for this, which includes purchasing a sample of the paint and sending you an actual paint swatch for your approval. This way you can see how the antiquing glaze we normally apply affects the chosen colour. If variations are subsequently required, most makes of paint can be obtained on your behalf, but it is advisable to call us to check. We can also provide a lightly distressed finish to either our House Colours or your specific finish if you require this, and again this is included within the £25 fee. Please call us to discuss or order any pieces with a finish other than our standard six colours. Q: When you paint my piece of furniture in the colour I choose, will the colour look the same as it does on the colour card? A: Not quite. It may look a little darker, because of the antique glaze which we apply – once it is painted – to bring out the features of the piece. Therefore, if you want to choose a special colour, it is wise to choose a slightly lighter one because of this effect. We can omit the glaze if requested, but prefer not to, as we feel that it enhances the final look. Ordering Q: How will I know if a product is in stock? A: Please contact us to check this before ordering. Q: If an item that I want is out of stock, when can I have it? A: Usually in less than 6 weeks, occasionally this will be a little longer. If time is critical, please let us know so that we can advise. Q: Are any of your pieces of furniture flat packed? A: No, but see page 40. Q: When will you take money from my credit card? A: If an item is in stock, we will take 100% at point of order. If the item is not in stock, we will take a deposit of 50% from your credit card at the time of order, and automatically charge the balance to your card when the item is ready to ship, unless you tell us you would like to pay by another method. Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 38 Delivery Q: How much do you charge for delivery, and how long do you take to deliver? A: For charges please see the lorry symbol (with the letter A, B, C or D next to it) against each of our products. If an item is in stock, we should get it to you within seven working days. If we have to order it, you should allow around 6 weeks for delivery (it can often be much less and sometimes a little longer). If you ask us to paint it, that usually takes us an extra week to two weeks, and if we have to customise the order for you this can take a little longer as well. Here is the explanation of our delivery codes A, B, C or D. A means a parcel service. This will cost you £9. B is also a parcel service for slightly bigger items, and will cost you £19. C could be a parcel service or we will bring it to you ourselves. This is for bigger items again, and we make a charge of £29. D means a delivery of our biggest items. Again we will either deliver it to you ourselves or send it with a specialist carrier. The basic charge is £39 but here it gets a little more expensive the further you live from our warehouse. (Charges apply to Mainland UK. For Highlands and Islands and Export orders please contact us for a quote). Only one delivery charge will be made per order, not per item. If you are ordering items from more than one category, the delivery charge will be based on the SINGLE highest charge category that applies to the items you require. The good news is that all mainland UK delivery costs, when you order on the website, will be calculated for you! Q: How do you deliver? A: We do not usually use big lorries, but we do ask you to tell us if there is restricted access at your address. It is also helpful for us to know if somebody is available to help the driver. We contract to deliver your furniture to your front door. The driver will be happy to carry the items over your threshold, but will not be liable for any damage to the interior of your property, howsoever caused. For any items in delivery category D, please let us know if you would like a quote for a two man delivery service should help not be available at your end. Q: What time of day do you deliver? A: We will always contact you to arrange a mutually convenient day for delivery. If the delivery is a small one, it will be carried out by a parcel carrier who will deliver anytime within normal working hours. A signature will be required and it is essential that you check the goods to ensure that they are undamaged, as claims for transit damage cannot be made if you have signed for them as being received in satisfactory condition. If we do the delivery ourselves, or use a specialist carrier, we can usually be more precise on time, and of course you can specify days and times to avoid. Weekend/evening deliveries are sometimes possible, although they may incur an additional charge – please contact us for a quote. “Hi Jon. It’s stunning, thankyou. I really love it.” Maria Checkley 39 When your furniture arrives Q: Will I need to do any assembly or construction when my furniture arrives? A: Usually not, and what you might need to do is really very simple. This is only for self assembly legs. Luckily, as we do not produce flat pack furniture, the only thing we may have to ask you to do is to put on four self assembly legs (if your piece is a desk or table). These are very easy to put on without any tools whatsoever. They come with wing nuts, and as they are numbered individually, it is important that you put the right leg on the right corner. Handle options Q: Can I choose which handles I get with my furniture? A: On this website you will see a variety of handles on our furniture, but most are shown with aged brass effect ring pulls. These are handmade and suit the furniture very well. This type of handle will usually be supplied with all orders unless you have told us otherwise. Alternatives include porcelain or wooden knobs, or we can fit handles supplied by you (painted orders only). Wardrobes (WD1) are normally supplied with porcelain handles whether painted or not. Looking after your furniture Q: What wood is my furniture made from, is it robust, and is it from a sustainable resource? A: It is largely, and usually entirely, handmade from a solid hardwood (Mango). The exceptions are our Classic wardrobes and our panelling which are both made from top quality MDF. Mango is very strong, durable, dense, virtually knot free and hard to dent. It has a fine grain which lends it well to staining or waxing. It is entirely sustainable, first providing the mango harvest for several years, before being recycled into our furniture. It is a natural material and will therefore generally have one or two irregularities. These are characteristics of the wood itself, and the manufacturing process, rather than defects. Telephone: 01453 731305 | Facsimile: 01453 731500 | www.scumblegoosie.com | [email protected] 40 Q: What finish would suit my furniture best? A: As our designs are based on 18th and 19th century originals, a lightly antiqued or distressed finish suits our furniture far better than a 21st century mass-produced formica finish. Again, some prefer waxing or staining. Returns Q: What if I want to return the furniture? A: We try at all times to please our customers.
