2012 Annual Report - Providence Life Services
Providence Life Services Worthy of His Calling • • • “With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.” • • • 2 THESSALONIANS 1:11 2012 Annual Report “...Every Good Purpose...” “ This place shall be the scene of the continuous unfolding of the purposes of God in the ministry of mercy. From this small beginning the calls for enlargement and amplification will be many. • • • Reverend John Van Harn, 1960 ” In a grassy field along Central Avenue in Palos Heights, Illinois, a cornerstone was laid in 1959 for the first Christian nursing home in the area. In fact, this place was an answer to the prayers of church members who felt they had been called by God to make a difference. They had “every good purpose” (2 Thessalonians 1:11) in mind, a hope for transforming their families and the community. Each new building, each new location, each new service — they all represent the unique calling of Providence Life Services. And each is a reminder of God’s faithfulness to make us worthy of His calling. This year we again saw God at work in new ways and new places. We pray that as you read about His handiwork in these pages, you will be inspired to step out with us in answering the call. None of this would be possible without the gracious, generous, faithful community that continues to support the ministry of Providence Life Services. Our prayer is that reading through As local churches came together this year’s Annual Report will first to express a need, and then to meet it, we realized how true it give you a glimpse of the calling is that God equips those He calls. that first formed this community, We had no way of knowing how and the difference a community can make when we partner with large this ministry would grow, how diverse our service offerings God in mission. would become, how much we Janice DeBoer, Chair would learn along the way. Richard C. Schutt, CEO Park Place Memory Support The first residents began moving into Park Place Christian Community of Elmhurst in February, and they are delighted with the lifestyle available there. The local newspaper that covered the groundbreaking ceremony in June called Park Place a “jewel” in the community. Park Place’s location next to Timothy Christian Schools has made some mutually beneficial relationships possible: a number of Timothy students have been hired to serve in the dining room, several residents have taken a blogging class at Timothy, and the Timothy High School music teacher performs piano concerts regularly in the Park Place lobby. Park Place serves Elmhurst and surrounding communities with Independent Living, Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Rehabilitation Services, and Memory Support. The services and amenities are impressive, but even more impressive is the depth of genuine community the residents have achieved in such a short time — they pray for each other, joke with each other, and enjoy meals and coffee together. Staff have commented on the feeling of “family” that buzzes through the hallways. Praise God! We enhanced the Memory Support services we offer at Saratoga Grove and Holland Home, and families are expressing relief and gratitude that their loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can get the care they need — in a Christian setting. Specially trained Memory Support staff learn as much as possible about the residents in their care, so they can make meaningful connections through relevant activities. And sensitive communication to other residents in the buildings helps answer questions, relieve fears, and encourage the entire community to answer God’s call to care for each other. Thomas Place Thomas Place broke ground last June, and will serve 80 people in the Orland area with affordable luxury. This new project represents a ministry opportunity for us to serve seniors on limited incomes, so they can maintain the independence they’ve worked so hard for. We receive daily phone calls from people eager to take advantage of the opportunity this unique senior housing option represents. Move-ins are expected this spring. We are excited to be involved in a project that represents a new opportunity to answer our original calling. 4 | Worthy of His Calling In December we broke ground for a new Health & Wellness Center at Victorian Village, the first “small house” or “green house” in the state of Illinois. The Center consists of three new buildings on the Victorian Village campus. A larger building will provide housing for 30 rehab clients, and two smaller buildings will each serve 10 skilled nursing patients. All three buildings will have a very home-like atmosphere. The project will allow us to deliver a full range of care on our Victorian Village campus — skilled nursing and rehab in the Center, Assisted Living and Memory Support in the Victorian Inn, Independent Living in the Grand Victorian, and townhome living in the Victorian Courts. Assisted and Independent Living For people who need additional help with the activities of daily living, and for people who are simply ready to give up the maintenance of a large house, Providence communities offer convenience, safety, friendship, fitness, and peace of mind. “I don’t know why I waited so long to move here!” is something we hear over and over again from new residents. Annual Report – 2012 | 5 Healthcare & Rehabilitation Centers The majority of people who stay at a Providence Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center are short-term clients who come to us for rehabilitation, after which they return home. At all of our skilled nursing locations, Providence teams up with respected experts — Marianjoy, Ingalls, and Mary Free Bed — to offer our clients the hope of a speedy recovery and maximum independence. Home and Community Based Services At some point, we all need a little help — either short-term, or as an ongoing solution. Particularly at risk are people who have recently been released from a hospital stay; without a caregiver, they are prone to falls or medication mix-ups that can return them to the hospital and eventually lead to a loss of independence. Providence At Home offers private duty and home health care to people who are not ready to move, but who realize the wisdom of having help available in their own home. And Providence Hospice serves families who are facing the death of a loved one, offering physical and spiritual comfort. Sharing our Calling In a family of services as broad and diverse as ours, it can be easy to remain unaware of what God is doing outside of our own location or area of responsibility. But this year we had an opportunity to gather three stories from our main service lines and weave them into a beautiful video that affirms the difference Providence is making in JOHN KOVAS people’s lives. Providence of Downers Grove John Kovas, who received rehab at one of our locations, testified to regained strength and renewed hope as a result of our ministry. Susan Donahue, whose mother is in one of our Memory Support programs, expressed relief at finding a place where she knows her mother is not only safe, but also happy. And Jack and Peggy Cashman, new residents at Park Place of Elmhurst, reminded us that by JACK AND PEGGY CASHMAN taking care of Park Place of Elmhurst their future now, they are relieving their children of making difficult decisions later. Sharing these three stories with the Providence family — and with the broader public — is a way to fulfill our calling to offer hope to others facing similar situations. And that’s really what calling is all about. It is when we act in faith that God’s purposes are fulfilled. Our prayer throughout the past year and into the next is for an increase in “acts prompted by faith.” Those deeds might involve volunteer service at a Providence community, or faithful prayers for our residents, or generous gifts that will be transformed into medicine, food, safety, and Christian care. This calling we engage in is a shared calling. And we are proud to share it with you. Because you give what you have to offer, we are able to give what we have to offer. And the community thrives. Have you been called to give again today? www.ProvidenceLifeServices.com/Give/ 18 | Worthy of His Calling Providence Life Services is called to enhance the lives of those we serve in the name of Jesus Christ. • • • NONPROFIT ORG.
