The "electrical center" (phase-center) of
a GPS antenna is the point whose location we compute. To determine the
coordinates of a point, we must colocate the phase center of the antenna
with that point.
In order to simplify the process it is
assumed that the "physical center" of
the antenna is at the same location as
the phase-center. This is only true in
special antenna designed for precision
applications. "Phase center stability" is
the main characteristic of an antenna for
precision applications.
Zero-Centered Antenna: We have
achieved phase center stability by having four feed points for the antenna, four
points symetrically placed around the
physical center of the antenna element.
Multi-Path: Another important characteristic of a GPS antenna is its ability to
reject the signals that are reflected from
underneath the antenna. Such reflected
signals (multi-path) can introduce centimeters of error in precision applications.
This characteristic is called "multipath
rejection". To have a good multipath
rejection, the antenna must be mounted
on a choke ring gound plane. Mounting
the antenna on a flat ground plane results in a smaller and lighter package
but has much less rejection capability.
