St. Stephen, Deacon & Martyr
C a t h o l i c C h u r c h
A Catholic community of faith striving to
witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and
Confirmation calls us to bring Christ’s
Love to our families, our work places and
our community. Grateful for God’s gifts,
we seek to nurture those gifts and to give
back to the Lord by sharing our time,
talent and material treasure. In all of our
parish activities we seek to develop a
personal relationship with the Lord who
directs our lives and a vision that sees the
world with the eyes of Christ and that leads
to a commitment to justice. We seek a
sense of unity in Christ that leads us to be
an open and welcoming people and a sense
of joy in being graced by the gifts of God’s
Love.

Pentecost Sunday
P AGE 3
From Our Pastor
D
ear People of St. Stephen,
Today we celebrate Pentecost,
the third greatest feast of our
church year after Easter and Christmas.
Pentecost is an undervalued feast;
unfortunately it does not have a strong
place in everyday Catholic consciousness.
We won’t see anything like the crowds
we see at Christmas and Easter this
weekend. We recognize the Holy Spirit as
God every time we make the Sign of the
Cross, but the Holy Spirit is the person of
the Blessed Trinity who most Catholics
have the most difficult time in relating to.
Yet the coming of the Holy Spirit is a
momentous event for the life of every
follower of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the
ongoing presence of God to us, guiding
God’s people in continuing the work of
Jesus. As the Catechism of the Catholic
Church says:
“No one can say Jesus is Lord except by
the Holy Spirit.” (1Cor. 12:3) “God has
sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,
crying Abba! Father!” (Gal. 4:6) This
knowledge of faith is possible only in the
Holy Spirit: to be in touch with Christ,
we must first have been touched by the
Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes to
meet us and kindles faith in us. By virtue
of our Baptism, the first sacrament of the
faith, the Holy Spirit in the Church
communicates to us, intimately and
personally, the life that originates in the
Father and is offered to us in the
Son.” (Catechism, #683)
The coming of the Holy Spirit
transformed the apostles from a group of
people overwhelmed by the death of their
leader and wondering what His
Resurrection and Ascension meant into
people alive with the Spirit of Jesus and
willing to proclaim Jesus boldly in the
world. In a new book entitled “Under the
Influence of Jesus”, Joe Paprocki talks of
the impact of the Holy Spirit on the
apostles. He talks of the human desire to
attain expanded consciousness and
awareness, something human beings have
often tried to do misguidedly with drugs,
with the destructive effects of drugs as the
result. But we still have the desire to let
go of our narrow-mindedness and to have
some sense of the great realities around
us. The traditional Catholic prayer, the
Anima Christi, goes like this: “Soul of
Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save
me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me.” In this
prayer we ask for the kind of sober
intoxication that the apostles experienced
on Pentecost when they were filled with
the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s
ongoing presence to us. When our hearts
are open to the Holy Spirit, we allow
God’s spirit, the very life of God, to guide
our lives. We open our hearts to the love
of God and draw energy and enthusiasm
from the Holy Spirit to live in the spirit of
Jesus’ love. Two gifts of the Holy Spirit,
received at Confirmation, illustrate a part
of the working of the Holy Spirit.
One is wisdom – allowing God’s Spirit to
guide the way we look at the world;
wisdom guides us so that our vision and
values are those of Jesus. The other is
fortitude or courage, the strength to live
the values of Jesus in all the circumstances
of our lives.
A challenging question to ask ourselves on
this feast of Pentecost is what would my
life look like if I lived “under the influence
of Jesus”? The question pushes us to allow
the Holy Spirit to guide the spirit with
which each of us lives every day as well as
the choices which we make every day.
The strength to live in the spirit of Jesus
also comes from the Holy Spirit, who is
always with us to strengthen and guide us
as we live each day. May we grow in
appreciation of the Holy Spirit on this
feast of Pentecost and keep our hearts
open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit
every day of our lives. “Come Holy Spirit,
fill our hearts with the fire of Your love.”
May God bless you and your loved ones

Today is a brand new day …
Today is a brand new day …
“This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24
Sometimes we don’t appreciate the day we live through and
complain about it until nightfall. Think about some times that you
should have been thankful to God for the day and failed. Looking
back, here are some thoughts on how to get through a difficult day.
Today is a brand new day, a delightful opportunity to begin again.
I must not be held hostage by yesterday’s pain. If my heart
remains open, and my spirit is right, yesterday’s pain becomes
today’s gain. I will grow into a better person through the
sufferings. Today is a brand new day and it needs to stand on its
own. Today is a brand new day and it’s the only one I have. I
refuse to let tomorrow’s concerns steal today’s joy. Today is a
brand new day, God’s gift for life investment. It is not to be
squandered by worry or regret.
Today is a brand new day. Sunrise reminds us to practice
resurrection. No problem is greater than the God who holds this
day in His hands. Today is a brand new day, so I’m going to go out
and live it.
“This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Last Sunday was National Cancer Survivors Day and I was invited
to a luncheon for Cancer Survivors given by Advocate Christ
Hospital. I found myself in a room full of fellow cancer survivors
and it was heartening to see so many people who have survived
this terrible disease and give all of us hope for a bright future. Who
is a cancer survivor? The National Cancer Survivors Day
Foundation defines a “Survivor” as anyone living with a history of
cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of
life.
Advances in early detection and treatment are creating more
cancer survivors than ever before. However, survivors face many
challenges because of their diagnosis. To improve the quality of
life of cancer survivors, more resources, research, and survivorfriendly legislation is needed. Yes, this truly is the day the Lord has
made and I will rejoice and be glad in it as a fellow cancer
survivor. Give a hug to a cancer survivor today.
Blessings,
Deacon Ken Zawadzki

Prawda i Kościół
To On nas poucza, kieruje nami i „popycha” nas we właściwych
kierunkach.
Nam
w naszych sercach. To On jest Dawcą Łask, światłością sumień, radością serc, ochłodą w pracy, utuleniem w
To jeden z
działania, lecz ten sam Bóg, sprawca wszystkiego we wszystkich. Wszystkim zaś objawia się Duch dla
[wspólnego] dobra.” (1 Kor 12,5-7). Wolna wola, dana nam przez Boga, czasami prowadzi do błędnych
decyzji i osądów, do złych działań.

And for all for whom our parish is asked to pray
To help keep the list of names read at Mass and placed in
the bulletin accurate and current, we will keep the name
of a non-parishioner who is an immediate family member
of our parishioner on the list at Mass for two weeks and
in the bulletin for two weeks. For a parishioner, we will
keep the name on the list at Mass for four weeks and in
the bulletin for 60 days. We ask that an immediate family
member call after 4 weeks if you wish to have the name
continued to be read at Mass.
