Vol. 24, No. 2 WINTER 2015
A Message from Fr. Frank
Dear Friends and Benefactors:
Fr. Francis
Pizzarelli,
SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW
Executive Director-Founder/CEO
Hope House Ministries
It is hard to believe that on April 22, 2015, we
will celebrate our 35th anniversary of reaching out to the poor, broken and wounded
among us. So much has happened during
these past 35 years. We grew from a little
guesthouse on the grounds of Little Portion
Friary in Mount Sinai to our main campus on
Main Street in Port Jefferson Village. That little
house in Mount Sinai gave birth to twelve different programs that profoundly touch
countless people’s lives every day.
The heart of our work is our Community
House, which provides comprehensive care
for young people who are struggling with
life's challenges. The majority of the beds are
used to provide long-term nontraditional
comprehensive treatment for addictions.
The growing number of young men that are
entrusted to our care are suffering from opiate addiction, specifically heroin use.
The heroin epidemic last year in Suffolk
County claimed more than 365 lives. It is
claiming lives at an alarming rate across the
country. This is not a criminal issue; this is a
national health crisis that must be addressed
now!
“Light a Candle
for Jason”
Saturday,
February 28, 2015
7 p.m. EST
In early January, I went into the hospital for
what was supposed to be an ordinary procedure taking not more than an hour.
Unfortunately, due to complications, it took
more than five hours to complete that surgery. I thought initially I would be home in
two or three days, but I was in the hospital in
intensive care for more than 10 days. Every
day I feel better but it’s still a challenge.
While I was lying in intensive care unable to
sleep, I could not help but think of the countless people I have worked with who have lost
their lives because of heroin, mental health
issues and suicide. Personally, I have buried
more than 100 young people who have
senselessly lost their lives due to this unaddressed national health crisis.
As I tossed and turned, I decided I needed
to do something more. With the help of a
colleague, I made a very simple video entitled “Light a Candle for Jason.” It is an
attempt to raise people's consciousness and
awareness of this very serious health crisis
and to make people aware of the profound
connection between mental health and
opiate addiction. “Light a Candle for Jason”
is an attempt for us to acknowledge all the
Jason’s who have died due to mental health
issues and addictions and to acknowledge
the countless Jason's in the world who have
lost their way and need our support now!
As I write this column, more than 20,000 people around the world have seen the video in
11 different countries. I’m asking people from
around the world on Saturday, February 28,
2015, at 7 PM Eastern Standard Time to take
pause and light a candle for the Jason in
your life.
On Long Island we’re asking people to come
in great number to Hope House in Port
Jefferson at 7 PM on Saturday, February 28,
cont’d. on page 6
31st ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF FAMILY, FRIENDS & HOPE
A HUGE SUCCESS!!
Hope House Ministries was once again
blessed with a full house at our 31st Annual
Celebration of Family, Friends & Hope, held
on December 1st, 2014, at the grand Villa
Lombardi’s Catering Hall in Holbrook.
Celebrating our 34th year of ministry, the
event raised an astounding $283,000!!
Over 650 of Hope House’s dedicated supporters celebrated together to kick off the
holiday season in a most jubilant way. It
began with the continued generosity of the
Lombardi family who, as for the past twenty
years, donated the entire catering package, presenting a truly decadent buffet
and an abundance of luscious desserts. As
always, their highly professional staff did an
exceptional job in creating an extraordinary
Artie & Barbara Morin collect their Silent Auction prizes
and memorable event, from the beautifully decorated hall to the most
attentive detail in serving the party guests. The endearing young men
of Hope House serenaded the crowd with holiday songs, and the
Naked Truth Band gave a truly engaging performance.
Our guests were also given the opportunity to participate in both a
Silent and Live Auction, which offered over 100 gift items and raised
over $31,600! Long Island’s businesses and devoted Hope House supporters were extremely generous, allowing us to offer a diverse and
irresistible selection of gifts (see our list of sponsors).
Long-time supporters Kenneth Roberts
and Kathryn Frey
Congratulations and thank you to all the devoted, hard-working volunteers, auction, journal and event sponsors, board members and our
enthusiastic guests, who made this event a wonderful success!

Blessing Bags
for Pax Christi
Thank you, Ever So Saucy Foods
Frank Tramontano, Owner-Executive Chef of Ever So Saucy
Foods displays one of the company’s products. Pictured (l to r): Margaret Bell, Patti Froning, and Karen Indusi.
Stephen Brazeau, Director of Wisdom House and
Associate Director of Pax Christi Hospitality Center,
expressed a deep appreciation when Karen Indusi, a
member of Beta Sigma Phi and volunteer for Hope
House Ministries, handed him 40 Blessing Bags for Pax
Christi Hospitality Center and was touched by the inspirational message and the passion of Beta Sigma Phi in
their support of Hope House Ministries.
The bags were filled with a razor, bath soap, comb,
shave cream, wash cloth, gloves, socks, shampoo,
deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, and lotion, along
with a note of inspiration for the guests of Pax Christi.
The members of Beta Sigma Phi raised the money for this
project through Yankee Candle sales and have been
supporting Hope House Ministries for over 20 years.
This year’s annual fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday,
April 16 at Villa Lombardi’s. Their theme, “Hats Off, Derby
Party” encourages their guests to wear hats or fascinators. There will be a Your Choice Auction and Gourmet
Buffet Dinner with a price of $50 per person (See pg. 9).
For more information, contact Deb DiRoma at
(631) 821-7598.

On behalf of the residents of the Community House, we
extend our gratitude to Chef Frank, Don Vincent,
Anthony Bonna, and the entire staff at Ever So Saucy
Foods, Yaphank, NY, for their generous donation of 25
trays of vegetable lasagna and 25 trays of eggplant
parmagiana. Chef Frank explains, “We are pleased to
be a part of helping such a necessary cause. We here
at Ever So Saucy Foods hope this donation helps to
brighten the holiday and share good cheer for those in
need.” Bon Appetit!
Secret Santa 2014
A special thank you to all of those
who gave a little extra this past
holiday season while
supporting the Secret
Santa Drive. We raised
over $34,300 to support
the outreach programs of
our ministry! Thanks for
spreading the holiday
cheer to so many in need!

Thank you to the
Wish List Granted...Thank You!
As a community service project for Dr. Sherlif’s PSY 150
class, students Jessica Cannone, Brittany DiNunzio,
Victoria Sapienza, Shannon McNally and Brian Olsen
(not pictured) from St. Joseph’s College (Patchogue,
NY) collected items from Hope House Ministries’ Wish List
over a period of several months. They graciously delivered the items to HHM on November 19th. We thank
these students for all the time and effort they put into this
project and we thank all who participated via their generous donation!
The 18th Annual
Breakfast Club Event
Once again, the Hope House Ministries Breakfast
Club Committee will be hosting The Breakfast Club
Event. Over the past seventeen years this important
event has attracted Long Island business people
and philanthropists who have generously
contributed over $3,127,050 to benefit Hope House
Ministries! For information on the upcoming event at
the Meadowbrook Club in Jericho, please call
Theresa Zeis in the Development Department
at (631) 473-8796.
Hernandez
Family!
Nine-year-old Rebecca Hernandez has done many
foods drives, the latest one for Hope House Ministries.
Nicholas, her seven-year-old brother, was so inspired by
her example, he organized a sock drive. The results of
these efforts were 100 pairs of socks and three truckloads of food being delivered to Hope House Ministries
by their parents, Dawn Marie and Joey on December
17th. We applaud their family commitment to helping
those in need and for being a wonderful role model for
the entire community.
Westhampton Beach
Haunted Library
On Saturday, October 25, 2014, staff and volunteers of
the Westhampton Free Library, located at 7 Library Ave.,
Westhampton Beach, held a “Haunted Library” themed
fundraiser to benefit Hope House Ministries. We are ever
so grateful for all their efforts in raising close to $100 in
support of our Ministry. Thank you!

Father Frank’s Message- cont’d. from pg. 1
2015, to remember all those Jason’s
who have died and the growing
number of Jason’s who have
lost their way. We need to
provoke a national conversation regarding this issue,
which hopefully will ignite an
international conversation,
so we might see an end to
this horrific epidemic that is
senselessly claiming so
many young people's lives.
As I reflect on where we started
35 years ago and where we are
today, I am overwhelmed. So much of
what we have become is thanks to the thousands of benefactors who have blessed our ministry with their time, their talent and their treasure. We've
also been blessed with an extraordinary staff that continues to give more than 150% of their time and their talent to touch people's lives. It amazes me that our key
administrators have worked here for more than 25 years
and they have made a profound contribution to this
ministry that is beyond words. I am forever grateful and
in their debt.
Pax Christi, our hospitality center for the homeless for
more than 25 years, has provided more than shelter for
the thousands who have sought our assistance. The
dedicated staff provides compassion, dignity and
respect for every guest that walks through our door.
Montfort Therapeutic Residence provides comprehensive care for young people already enmeshed in the
criminal justice system. In addition to providing them
with comprehensive residential care and support for
their families, they have the opportunity of attending
Peace Academy, our junior-senior high school that provides extraordinary educational opportunities for the
growing number of adolescents who just fall between
the cracks.
Siena House was initially created to provide residential
care for pregnant women who wanted to come fullterm. We've always responded to needs that were not
being addressed. In addition to reaching out to pregnant women, Siena House has become a safe house for
women who suffer at the hands of domestic violence.
Our Counseling Center provides competent clinical
care by licensed social workers, mental health counselors and psychologists for the growing number of peo6
ple in our midst who are struggling with
mental health issues.
The Sister Jean Beagan, OP
Family and Children's Center provides comprehensive mental
health services for young children and their parents. Parental
involvement is crucial in the
treatment process.
The St. Louis de Montfort
Academy is our alternative junior-senior high school for the growing number of students that cannot find
their place in their home school districts.
There is no fee for services. We work in close
union with the sending districts, who recognize our
academic credits.
The St. Maximillian Kolbe Center for Addictions provides
assessments and a rigorous program of outpatient treatment for those battling addictions. All that is asked is
that the person who seeks our services be motivated
and willing to commit oneself to treatment.
All of these programs have developed during these past
35 years as we have continuously tried to respond to the
urgent needs of people at risk in our midst. If we have
been effective in a large way, it is due to your extraordinary generosity and support these past 35 years.
On April 22, 1980, our journey began in the Chapel of
Infant Jesus at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson at a
Mass of Thanksgiving. Thirty-five years later, we will gather once again at the Chapel of Infant Jesus at St.
Charles Hospital on April 22, 2015, for a 7:30 PM Mass of
Thanksgiving. Everyone is invited to celebrate this profound anniversary. I urge you to please join us if you can.
It is my small way of saying thank you for all that you've
done for us these past three decades.
Be assured of my continued prayers for you and your
families at all of my Masses. Thank you for making such
a profound difference in my life and this ministry.
Forever grateful,

competent care for the poor, the marginal and wounded among us.

Director of Volunteer Services
It certainly is no secret how grateful we are to the extraordinary volunteers who support us by blessing our ministry with their time and talent
in countless ways, and these dedicated women are no exception!
Linda Dolan, Linda Johnson, Jennifer Parzer and Diane Crocker have
been working tirelessly for the past eight years to create the beautiful baskets for the Silent Auction that our guests bid on at the Annual Hope
House Celebration of Family, Friends & Hope. This year the Auctions
raised over an amazing $31,600!
Undoubtedly, it is no easy task blending gift certificates and gift items to
find the perfect combination for over 100 gift baskets and items; however, these enthusiastic ladies make it look easy as well as beautiful! Basket
making starts in September. They come after work, in between their children’s dance classes and track meets, and on weekends. Each one of their
children have joined in and helped, thus making it a real family affair.
