Spring 2005 - Hope House Ministries
Special 25th Anniversary Edition A Ministry Supported by the Montfort Missionaries A Message from Fr. Frank Dear Friends and Benefactors, Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW Founder and Executive Director O n April 22, 2005, Hope House Ministries will celebrate twenty-five years of ministry and service to young people and families in crisis. Twenty-five years ago, a group of about three hundred people gathered for the Eucharist in the Chapel of Infant Jesus at St. Charles Hospital to seek God’s blessing on a ministry that was just beginning. At that time, a ten-bed house for troubled teenagers was opening. It was located in the guesthouse on the grounds of the Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai. That shared idea became a dream, and on that night became a reality. Hope House was born. That little house on Old Post Road in Mount Sinai gave life to seven other projects, sixty-five employees and over three hundred volunteers. Since that historic night in April of 1980, almost three hundred thousand people of every age have been touched, healed and empowered. The miracle that night, which continues to be the miracle today is Divine Providence working through very ordinary people to do some very extraordinary things. The many hands and hearts that have blessed us for twenty-five years have made all the difference. In the late seventies, a number of us gathered to talk about the growing unmet needs of our young adults and their escalating problems around drugs, alcohol and homelessness. Never did I think that their plight would become my life’s work. Vol. 14, No. 1 MARCH 2005 Over the years, I have prayed ceaselessly for the grace to be strong and faithful to this vital ministry. I have asked for the courage to give voice to the voiceless and for the strength and faith to live with the uncertainty of not knowing where the next dollar would come from to pay the necessary bills. Providence has never failed me. This tapestry of love, compassion and service has touched so many people in so many unimaginable ways. It has empowered so many of us to think and live outside the box as we serve the needs of others. It has healed and empowered so many broken and wounded people. Their stories continue to sustain us and encourage us to continue the journey. “As we celebrate twenty-five years of magic, miracles and God’s ever As we celebrate twentyfive years of magic, miracles and God’s ever present love among us, I am profoundly grateful for all of you who have supported us along the way, especially all of you who have walked with us from the beginning. The stories of hope and transformation are too many to tell, but in their names, I thank you for making such a difference. Be assured that you are forever in my heart. present love...” Please continue to pray for us as we courageously begin our next twenty-five years. With deep gratitude, Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM Founder/Executive Director, Hope House Ministries Page 2 Annual Holiday Party 2004 Hope House’s 21st Annual Holiday Party was held on December 2nd at the magnificent Villa Lombardi’s Catering Hall in Holbrook. Expanded Services Offered to Parents and Children T he Children and Family Center of Hope House Ministries continues to expand its services. Anna Santalino, a graduate student in psychology, has joined the staff as an intern working with children and their parents as well as co-conducting a workshop for Single Parents. We have been happy to have her and hope that she continues to enjoy success in her studies and her work. Although the CAPS program (Children and Parent Support) concluded its first six week sessions at Thanksgiving, we enjoyed the help that was given to us by the social work interns, Veronique Antienes and Kirsta Kelly. Further help was extended by a young teacher (and his guitar!) Tony Chiarella. We are most grateful to all these young people for lending us their time and their talent. We look forward to having them back with us when we resume the CAPS program in mid-March. We would also like to have two more interns so that we could rotate their work and give them experience with each age group as well as the parents involved. Sr. Jean Beagan, O.P. The welcome greeting on the banner demonstrates what Project Hope has been privileged to offer since opening its doors in October, 2004. For those men and women who live in abandoned houses, vehicles, tents or substandard housing, Project Hope provides them with a safe and caring environment where they are accepted and hospitality is provided. Deborah A. DiRoma, CreativeFX email: [email protected] Printing Printing Spectrum www.printingspectrum.com Hope House Ministries PO Box 358 Port Jefferson, NY 11777 Each day Project Hope assists our homeless guests with clothing, food, shower facilities, as well as assistance in addressing their homelessness. Since its beginning, Project Hope has been privileged in assisting several of our homeless men and women in attempting to break their cycle of homelessness. Several of our guests have entered substance abuse treatment programs to address their alcohol/drug addictions, others have found employment and subsequent housing, and still others have since received mental health treatment. In addition, Project Hope offers those in the local community outreach services. Most of all, Project Hope seeks to encourage our homeless guests to come and spend as much time as they wish to relax, socialize, or just enjoy the hospitality, it is the wish for our homeless guests to be provided with an environment where they can feel a sense of appreciation and value for who they are, because so often they are shunned and avoided by others.
