Companion Quarterly What a Year 2015 Was! A s 2015 comes to a close, I would like to take the time to say thank you and to reflect on our accomplishments. I was so honored to take over as Executive Director in February 2015, and it has been better than I ever could have dreamed. This is a wonderful organization in a wonderful community that supports us 110 percent. You the community are the financial support that keeps us afloat. We do not receive any government subsides or any funds from any other Humane Society. You the community have been so giving; when we needs funds, food, supplies, you always come through. All we have to do is ask. You the community have shared, liked, posted, and helped us with all our social media. We have a great presence and have gone from a little over 3,000 Facebook likes in February 2015 to 4,998 as of New Year’s Eve. That's almost 2,000 likes in less than 10 months. We have a fantastic board that works so hard behind the scenes doing so much that no one ever sees. I have the best staff that is so committed to our mission and so adaptable with all the changes this year. Of course ,80 percent of what we accomplish is done by our fantastic volunteers. I can't say Volume 4 Issue Winter 2016 Inside this issue: enough about their dedication and drive. They foster animals, do data entry, make phone calls, shuttle animals, stuff envelopes, clean cages, make parade floats, pick up poop, play with kittens, take care of sick dogs, gather donations, write grants, make posters, sit at booths, sell things, get up early, and stay late. They are what keeps us going and what keeps me motivated. In 2015, we took in 258 animals to our foster program. Out of those, nine had been hit by cars, 15 were heartworm positive, and 59 had serious health issues. Yet we gave them all a second chance. We placed 251 animals in loving forever homes. We helped 53 families with unexpected vet bills, totaling more than $13,000. We helped over 700 animals get spayed or neutered by subsidizing over $37,000 in surgeries. We had a record breaking year but there is still much more work to be done, there are many more animals and pet owners who need our help. Thanks to all our supporters, volunteers, staff and board members for all you do! It takes a great team and we have the best! ~Kelly Ronnow, Executive Director, Humane Society of Alamance County Ending the Year in Grand Style 2 Thank You, Vets! 3 We’re Social! 3 Meet Snow and Minnie 4 Our Donors and Friends 5 Happy Feet 7 Miles 4 Mutts is Coming 7 Page 2 Companion Quarterly Ending the Year in Grand Style We had many events in 2015, which enabled us and our program animals to visit many, many people and gain more exposure for our organization. Thank you to everyone who made each event possible and who attended these events. We can’t wait to see you out at our 2016 events! Be sure to check out our website, www.hsaconline.org, for information on upcoming events. Two large events capped our 2015: Woofstock and our first annual Volunteer and Donor Appreciation Banquet. Dangerous weather conditions forced us to postpone Woofstock by three weeks, but our supporters still came out in droves to enjoy great music and fun with the community. We’d like to thank our Woofstock 2015 sponsors: Vicky & Sam Hunt Foundation Garret Terrell—”A Touch of Mae” Stacy J. It was a great night for our supporters to fellowship with one another and for us to show our thanks to those who truly make our work possible. Gail Brown won individual Volunteer of the Year honors, while the entire Bryant family earned the family Volunteer of the Year award. Nancy Pomer was named Friend of the Animals. Ms. Snow (short for Snow White) is a sweet angel. She is very loving, caring, and nurturing. Approximately two years old, Snow has been spayed and is up-todate on all vaccinations. Be part of Snow’s fairy tale: adopt her today! How long has Minnie been waiting for you? More than 600 days! That’s nearly two years in foster care! If you're looking for a spunky gal to call your own, Minnie is the dog for you. She loves nibbling on food and treats, taking long walks, fetching balls, and snuggling with her human. Sweet and smart Minnie takes direction well and wants nothing more than to please her people and enjoys calm, steady introductions with potential new best friends. However, she is not good with other animals. Minnie is a very calm and relaxed girl when not overstimulated. She crates beautifully, without even a whimper. She gently takes her treats, loves to chew on bones, and gives kisses. Minnie is currently in foster care where she receives lots of love and attention. She is spayed, microchipped, and up-todate on vaccines. Make her part of your home today, as she has a reduced adoption fee! For more information on Snow, Minnie, and all of our foster pets, please visit www.hsaconline.org/adopt. We Love Our Donors and Friends! We sincerely appreciate every minute you volunteer with us, every kind word you say about us and every gift you donate to us. Without you, none of the stories you read about in this quarter’s Companion Quarterly would be possible. On the next two pages, you will find a listing of our most recent donors. In compiling this report, we have made every attempt to create an accurate and complete listing. However, should you find that your name is missing, we welcome your kind corrections. What do you do when Rover has to rove outdoors in icy conditions? Here’s a paw safe ice melt that you can apply to porches and sidewalks to make sure your pooch doesn’t slip and slide when he goes outside. You will need: 1 quart lukewarm water 3 drops dish washing detergent 1 ounce rubbing alcohol Mix all three ingredients and pour into a spray bottle. Coat icy surfaces with this mixture, and the ice will quickly be gone. Don’t have a spray bottle handy? Simply pour the ingredients directly on the ice. Unfortunately, not all sidewalks and porches are treated for ice. Be sure to carefully check your pet’s feet. Wash the feet, check for cracks, and massage foot pads with coconut oil or a pet safe lotion or foot cream. Make sure your pet has happy feet all winter long! Thanks to Triad Greys for this advice. Miles4Mutts is Coming The Humane Society of Alamance County and Ann Bird were big winners in the 2015 Miles4Mutts event, hosted by the Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County. The bikers raised more than $18,000 for our organization, and Ann won the 2015 Hyundai Accent raffle prize. Stay tuned to our website for more details on this year’s Miles4Mutts. Plan to join us this year, and together we’ll make the animals of Alamance County the real winners.
