ThE DEaN of Rock `N` Roll
s ta rt i n g l i n e s The Dean of Rock ‘n’ Roll By Bo b Bab bi t t O ur June 2009 Competitor magazine cover boy, Dean Karnazes, has won Badwater, run across pretty much every desert on the planet, completed 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 states and written a best-selling book called UltraMarathon Man. During one of our numerous competitorradio. com interviews with the amazing Mr. Karnazes, he spoke to us for about 40 minutes in the midst of running from San Francisco to San Diego to participate in the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon. Karnazes obviously loves marathons, but he also feels that as long as you’re out there already, why not add on a few miles and go for a 50K instead. And guess what? The folks from P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona (which is coming up on January 17) are working with the Dean of Rock ‘n’ Roll to give you an opportunity, not only to run a 50K on the marathon course, but to run with your soon-to-be BFF Dean Karnazes in his very own ultra. The Dean Karnazes Rock ‘n’ Roll Ultra is limited to the first 50 folks who register and the cost is $150 if you sign up by January 5, or $175 if there are still spots available at the expo. There is even an Ultra Upgrade for $50 that provides even more fun perks. So how does it work? It’s pretty simple. The start for the Ultra will be at 6:30 a.m. and it’s recommended that you have a headlamp for that first 4.8-mile loop, which you’ll run before the official marathon start at 7:40 a.m. After you finish your warm-up lap, you’ll join the marathoners in start line corral number 1. You’ll have aid stations for the entire 50K, live bands every mile, access to a heated area before the start, access to the VIP area at the finish line headliner concert, an inaugural Dean Karnazes Rock ‘n’ Roll Ultra finisher’s tech-T and a special “I Rocked The Ultra” finisher’s medal. If you’re already registered for the marathon or half marathon, you can upgrade to the Dean Karnazes Rock ‘n’ Roll Ultra for an additional $50. Before January 5, just e-mail your first and last name, the mailing address that you registered with, and your new predicted finish time to rnraz@ competitorgroup.com. If spaces are still available after January 5, you can upgrade to the Ultra/50K at the Expo. For all of the info on how to run with Dean, go to rnraz.com. Elemental Herbs By K ev in Jacks o n Elemental Herbs is a confluence of healthy habits and organically crafted herbs. Inspired as a product for athletes by athletes, this unique blend of organic and sustainably harvested herbs show us that there is a connection between our own bodies and healing the earth. Elemental Herbs is a product that outdoor enthusiast Caroline Duell created to help juggle the multiple jobs she was carrying, including massage therapist, farmer and climbing instructor. With a background in holistic sports medicine, Duell first developed the “All Good Goop” from a northern California herb garden. The five plants that ended up as part of the All Good Goop were the few that had survived the harsh western Marin County photo by patitucciphoto why not add on a few miles and go for a 50K instead? Healing our bodies and our Earth winds while thriving on the unforgiving hillsides of this region. These five essential plants (a.k.a. Elemental Herbs) were then blended together to form a healing balm that is strong enough to fight the cracked hands of climbers and soft enough for wind-burned lips. True to their mission statement: “Products good for people and good for the earth,” Elemental Herbs is pioneering a revolution in eco-friendly medications. Elemental Herbs uses 100 percent certified organic herbs to ensure they’re not poisoned by harmful pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Additionally, Elemental Herbs uses 100 percent pure beeswax that comes from beekeepers dedicated to sustainable practices. From the bio-diesel machines that farm the product to the recycled packaging, shipping and printed materials, this company actively supports and participates in green business principals through their eco-friendly values. The core of Elemental Herbs’ traction has been from its sponsored elite athletes, including Jordan Romero of Big Bear, Calif., who is attempting to become the youngest person ever to climb the seven summits. These athletes are hand-selected and all must be activists in order to be supported by Elemental Herbs. According to Duell, “The goal of the activist athlete campaign is to get athletes connected on a higher level and for them to be ambassadors of a sustainable world.” The products range from pain-relieving sprays to organic sunscreen ideal for endurance and adventure athletes. The products can be found at more than 400 retail stores including Mother’s Market, Whole Foods and most local health food stores and sports stores. They also offer online ordering at elementalherbs.com. Kevin Jackson is the owner of The Southern Terrain, an adventure guiding and altitude training organization.
