M
argaret Thatcher’s iron-fisted
rule over 1980s Britain prompted
waves of political protest.
Perhaps the most amazing
response of all occurred when Welsh coal
miners and London lesbians and gays found
a common cause. Pride tells the story of
that unlikely alliance; it was never obvious,
but it sure looks like fun.
‘A movie you can laugh along and dance to,
and may well become the very first musical
in London’s West End to bring disco to the
grim Welsh coal mines.’

nternationally recognized author and spoken

a creator of poetry that dares to belong to
the people and speak directly to them in
their own voice. In 2013, he collaborated with
animators to make the anti-bullying viral video

“For the Bullied and the Beautiful” to acclaim
at the 2013 International TED Conference in

CHRISTINE TASSAN
ET LES IMPOSTEURES
A COCKTAIL OF
ENERGY-FILLED
GYPSY JAZZ MUSIC
hristine Tassan et les
Imposteures invite us all to join
them and share some bubbles!
Tireless explorer of the Gypsy jazz
world, the four-woman band confirms
their originality and offers a new show
sparkling with invigorating ingredients:
subtle harmonies, modern inflections
and playful shams. Add a tangy and
tonic jazz base, an assortment of brilliant
songs, a pinch of Cuban flavors, a hint
of Argentinean languor, a dash of poetry,
an exquisite Quebec whiff, and most
importantly a great deal of humor!
all-woman quartet continues to reinvent this
timeless music while integrating new ideas
and influences with an originality and flair we
have become familiar with. From standards to
original compositions, the Imposteures’ musical
arrangements innovate, rejuvenate and leave
room for unbridled creativity from four talented
and accomplished young women.
‘Their stage act is full of spirit, humour and
camaraderie and they readily engage the
audience, often venturing into the crowd
while playing, making for a very down to
earth but uplifting musical experience.’

for men and precursors of the gypsy
wave that swept across Québec, this

An Evening with
Séan McCann of
Great Big Sea
S
éan’s love for Newfoundland and
Labrador folk songs shot him to
international fame as a founding
member of the renowned group
Great Big Sea. After millions of albums sold,
countless hit songs, and record breaking
tours around the world, Séan realized that
his 20 years with the band had to stop.
Music is supposed to connect, heal, and
bring happiness; and while Sean was giving
that to tens of thousands of people a night,
he himself was lost. Instead of finding truth
in his music he was using it to hide which
wasn’t fair to his fans or himself. So he left
the band and started over.
In 2014 Séan released his first post GBS
album; “Help Your Self”, a collection of
songs that helped Séan find his truth and
share it with his fans, friends, and family. It
helped him find a path towards dealing with
issues of addiction and abuse which has
taught him to find strength from pain.
The journey to find his own peace, love and
happiness continues through music and a
new album that will be released one song
at a time. “You Know I Love You” is a happy
collection of songs made by a man intent on
being happy.

HA HA HAREM
L
adies, lots of laughs and a lively night out. The Ha
Ha Harem is a brand spanking new comedy show
featuring an all female cast of stellar comedians.
Revelstoke’s own locally grown comic Katie Burrell
is coming home to fill us in on what it’s like being a
mountain girl come city slicker and she’s set to bring
with her some of Vancouver’s finest ladies of laughter.
Burrell, former Stoke FM radio host, was last seen here
on stage at the Big Eddy where she sold out her solo
show.
Now Burrell is back joined by headliner Erica Sigurdson.
Described as a sugar-coated razor blade, Sigurdson is
a dominating force in the Canadian Stand-up Comedy
scene. This femme-fatale has a darkness to her sense of
humour that she tempers with a little smirk.
Come early to grab a drink in the foyer and secure your
seat for a great night out.
The Ha Ha Harem is guaranteed to be Ha Ha hilarious.
“Erica Sigurdson is one of the best standups
this country has to offer.”

DAN MANGAN
N
ever one to rest on his laurels or do what’s
expected of him, Dan Mangan has, yet again,
transformed his sound.
From the traditional stripped-down acoustic
folk of 2010’s Nice Nice Very Nice, to the sweeping
orchestration and avant-jazz arrangements of 2012’s
Oh Fortune, Dan Mangan works best when he’s moving
forward and challenging himself. And so, what’s more
challenging than departing from the sound that has
earned you two Juno Award wins, international critical
accolades, and radio chart success?
His latest release Club Meds, released in 2015 by Arts &
Crafts, is a departure, both sonically and thematically. The
music is darker and more complex, but just as affecting as
anything he’s ever done, with the richness and honesty of
his singular voice ascending over the music. The critically
acclaimed album includes “Vessel” - both a Top 5 charter
on Canadian radio as well as the focus song from the film
score he wrote for Hector and the Search for Happiness,
starring Simon Pegg and Rosamund Pike.

THE NAUTICAL
MILES
T
he Nautical Miles are an
adventurous 7 piece alt-roots
band from Vancouver, BC.
Together, they have spent a
decade crafting richly textured and
emotionally complex folk music around
the thoughtful lyrics of songwriter
Corbin Murdoch. Their songs tell stories
steeped in the natural and emotional
histories of the Pacific-Northwest.
Migratory mammals, extraordinary
and ordinary humans, historic and
urban mythology are all subjects in the
narratives they spin.
Hailed as “a new kind of folk music” by
Alex Varty of The Georgia Straight, the
Vancouver band continues to push the
boundaries of contemporary Canadian
roots music. They have collaborated
with visual artists, choreographers,
bluegrass bands, and brass quintets—
with this band you can never be sure
what is going to come next, only that
you don’t want to miss it!

CORB LUND
AND THE
HURTIN’ ALBERTANS
T
he fourth-generation rancher and former
frontman of the punk/metal band The
Smalls has been a road warrior since
releasing his album Cabin Fever in 2012,
which shot to #1 in Canada. Corb Lund is a Juno
Award winner with multiple Canadian Gold
Records to his name, he also won the Canadian
Country Music Awards Roots Artist of the Year
eight times running.
Though it may look like a quartet onstage, the
Hurtin’ Albertans are really “a seven-piece band”
according to Lund “because Grant plays a bunch
of stuff,” including mandolin, banjo, Dobro, and
baritone guitar. “Grant and I have a complex
system of hand signals because I don’t use a set
list,” says Lund. “We’ve got seven records’ worth
of material now, so every show is different. I find
it more interesting that way.” Road dogs, Lund
and the band headline Canadian country and
folk festivals, as well as gigging at New York City
nightspots and America’s finest honky-tonks.
The Washington Post, exclaimed: “Lund is a
revelation, laconic and scary smart, with a devil’s
eye for details.”
