Climbing to New Heights
By Jonathan Masci
Manhasset students returned this September to
find a new addition to the MHS skyline: a 50 foot high
climbing wall next to the football field.
Plans for the climbing wall, which was funded
by the Tower Foundation, began last year. Aside from
the climbing wall, Project Adventure also consists of socalled ―low elements,‖ low-level climbing located on the
softball field. It is part of a larger outdoor education
program called Project Adventure. ―Mr. Cardillo and
Dean Schlanger both had it at their former schools, so
they‘re very confident they know all about Project Adventure and outdoor educations, and they really like it
for their students and they wanted to bring it here,‖ said
Mrs. McDonough, a teacher in the Physical Education
department.
One of the most interesting aspects of Project
Adventure is the level of student participation involved.
―It‘s not just us belaying you guys, it‘s fellow students
belaying,‖ Mrs. McDonough said. For this reason, students have to go through several safety and trust lessons
and exercises before they can participate in activities on
the climbing wall.
The wall itself is not just one rock wall. There
are two rock walls of different difficulties, an obstacle
course, and a cargo net. Teachers and coaches in the
Physical Education and Health department trained on the
wall for five days. Mrs. McDonough said, ―Not only
was it good for us to learn everything for your safety,
but it was good for us to get to know everybody.‖
When asked how she felt the wall and Project
Adventure as a whole would be received and whether
she expected it to raise enthusiasm for physical educa-
tion, Mrs. McDonough said, ―I think it‘ll take a while.
Elementary school kids are getting it as part of their curriculum, so in a couple years they‘re going to be ready
for it here.‖ She said for students already at the Secondary School, she thinks it will take ―an adjustment.‖■
Locker Room Renovation
By Julia Smaldone
Every year, as we come back from summer
break, we hear back to school announcements on the
loudspeaker, smell the familiar scent of our hallways
and classrooms, and see the faces of our friends and
teachers. However, it seems to be a Manhasset tradition
that every year these sounds are coupled with the occasional drill or hammer, these smells are overpowered
by paint or cement, and, along with our peers, we often
see the occasional tractor or crane. These additions to
our school‘s atmosphere are what are leftover from
whatever summer construction project is being finished
up. In the past, these projects have included new paint
colors, new bleachers, a different numbering system, or
new doors in the front of the school. This year‘s summer project was something that has been anticipated
and exciting for all of us - the transformation of the
locker rooms from the old, cramped, dirty, and poorly
designed space to the redesigned and much improved
ones. The plans for the new locker rooms have been in
the works for several years, and as students, we have
been eagerly awaiting the completion of this project
since we first heard about it towards the end of last
year. The construction of these new locker rooms began
in July and is expected to be complete by late October.
According to Carolyn Pagnano, the athletic director
of Manhasset, the student population is expected to
increase at a continuous rate until 2018, making the
reconstruction of the locker rooms a necessity that
became more urgent with each school year. All of
the locker rooms, including Middle School Boys
and Girls as well as High School Boys and Girls,
were renovated over the summer. While the lockers
may be a little difficult to open at first, and the girl‘s
locker room is not yet completely finished, it is still
a major improvement. The new design is much
more open, which facilitates moving around, getting
changed, and storing equipment. According to Ms.
Pagnano, once the Board of Education had voted on
and accepted the idea for the new locker rooms, she
and the coaches sat down with an architect to sketch
out plans. Each coach had their own ideas and as a
team they tried to incorporate each idea while staying within their budget. ―We had our wish list, and
then we had reality,‖ joked Ms. Pagnano as she explained that not all of the ideas could be put in place
without having to reconstruct the entire school.
However the final plans did call for some drastic
changes. The old locker rooms were not renovated
and rebuilt, but rather completely blown out in a
total reconfiguration that changed the whole
design. For example, when the High School
girl’s locker rooms are completed later this
month, they will be extended outside of the
school. The new design addresses many problems including supervision and changing
space. The new locker rooms were designed
to be much more open to provide more space
for changing (and any other type of movement). It was also the wish of Ms. Pagnano and
the other coaches to assign teams lockers all in one
area. Many students have had mixed reactions to the
new locker rooms. Junior Caroline Keogh thinks
that the lockers are ―difficult to understand but after
getting used to opening them they are actually very
easy to use and spacious.‖ However, she also points
out that while it‘s nice to have teammates lockers

What is Red Ribbon Week?
By Zainab Qureshi
On Thursday, February 7th, 1985 at or
around two o‘clock in the afternoon, Special Agent
Enrique Camarena left the American Consulate in
Guadalajara, Mexico to meet his wife for lunch.
Known to his family and friends by the nickname,
―Kiki‖, Special Agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration Enrique Camerena had been undercover
in Mexico for over four years on the trail
of Mexican marijuana and cocaine drug
traffickers. He was soon to be reassigned
by the DEA because he had come dangerously close to exposing the top leaders of a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline. As he walked to his truck in broad
daylight, five men approached him and
shoved him into a Volkswagen.
Camerena never saw his wife or family
again.
One month after his disappearance, his badly beaten and tortured body
was found on the side of the road,
wrapped in plastic bags. Over a thirtyhour period, Camerena‘s skull, jaw, nose, cheekbones, and windpipe had been crushed. His ribs were
broken, and a hole was drilled into this head with a
screwdriver. An audiotape of his torture showed that
his captives injected him with narcotics to ensure that
he would remain conscious during the senseless beating and suffering, before they bludgeoned him to
death on February 9th. He left behind a wife and three
young sons. His brutal murder is the reason we cele-
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, drug and
violence prevention awareness campaign observed
annually in the United States in October. After Agent
Camarena‘s death, citizens of his hometown in California donned red ribbons in his honor, and soon the
red ribbon became the symbol for prevention in order
to reduce the demand of illegal drugs. A year later,
Californians presented a proclamation to Nancy
Reagan calling for a ―Red Ribbon Week‖. By 1987,
the significance of the red ribbon had spread to surrounding states, and in 1988, the first
Red Ribbon Week was celebrated, proclaimed by the United States Congress
and chaired by First Lady Nancy
Reagan. Agent Camarena gave his life
in the fight against drugs, and today,
over eighty million people throughout
the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week.
During this week, children and adults
all over the country wear Red Ribbons,
take pledges, and participate in activities that show their commitment to
leading a drug-free lifestyle. And during Red Ribbon week, we remember
Kiki, the man who wanted to make a
difference and whose legacy still lives on.

Red Ribbon Week this year will be observed
from October 24th to October 30th. This October,
make sure to pay homage to Special Agent Camarena
and all the other men and women who have made the
ultimate sacrifice in support of our nation‘s struggle
against drug trafficking and abuse. Don a red ribbon.■

Thoughts
The Bubble
By Juliet Paterek
As poverty and unemployment sweep
the United States, a place of prosperity and
wealth thrive in the town of Manhasset. It‘s a
step back from reality. The children are unexposed to the real world and believe that obtaining
a Macbook at the age of 10 is normal, and having
Blackberry in elementary school is an absolute necessity.
To dig even deeper into this community,
Plandome is like an old world neighborhood. Even
though most children are spoiled, generally the families have a nice disposition. They‘re friendly and sweet,
but simply showy. The people of Manhasset are dripping
with designer brands from head to toe; and it would be
considered embarrassing to wear generic brands. Girls are
decorated with David Yurman necklaces and bracelets
that can cost up to $1000 each. Boy‘s are as preppy as
The Future…..
By Juliet Paterek
2110. Whistling hybrid cars will hover the skies
of a city decorated with solar panels. Everything will be
green, everything will be economically sufficient, and
everything will endeavor idealism. Thanks to advancement in technology human life will be easier. However,
there is a balance in life; too much technology could
cause harm. By looking into the past, some depictions of
the future can be found.
By viewing previous leaders, conflicts, and
wars, different situations could be avoided from repetition. In hindsight, many wars were optional, unnecessary, or avoidable. Moreover, over the course of history
war was sought to be the answer. There is a high probability that if things continue as they are today with erosion of the diplomatic process, that there will be a World
War III. The country most likely to start this war will be
China. China has grown at the speed of lightning over
the past decade; surpassing Japan in having a larger
economy. Plus, American jobs have been outsourced to
them. This trend will continue and generate an opening
for future problems. China‘s oppressive human right
conditions will persist as long as the Chinese are communist. The tension between China, Russia and the
United States will increase. It is possible that Russia and
America will team up. Although, in the end, there won‘t
be any winners because if this event was to occur, it
would mark the end of mankind. Albert Einstein said, ―I
know not with what weapons World War III will be
fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and
stones.‖ Basically, mankind will be destroyed with some
nuclear weapon, and by the time World War IV is
fought it would be the new generation.
A variety of industries will be greatly affected
including areas of medicine. Diseases that were once
fatal will be curable. Since 1981, AIDS has been globally spreading and causing deaths worldwide. This epidemic will most likely have killed more than 200 million
people. Via improvements in health, the number of

could be,

family was ripped out of a
fashion magazine being

The negative outcome of
living in a town like Manhasset is the un-exposure to
reality. Kids don‘t know that poverty and hunger dominate the world—it is an absolute sin. So who‘s to
blame? That‘s a question that is very difficult to answer.
Parents whom may or may not have grown up with a lot
in life are trying to give their children a better life. At
the same time, they‘re creating a bubble that is not fixed
in reality. This bubble is not easy to define, but here‘s a
just explanation.
The standards of living within in Manhasset are
considered above average. In Manhasset most households are driven by what is happening on Wall Street.
Thus, most income providers within Manhasset derive
deaths from HIV will slowly decrease casualties. In addition to declining cases of HIV, the paralyzed will be
given a second chance. The disabled will have the option of having a computer sensor implanted into their
brains, specifically at the motor cortex. This will serve
as a normally functioning motor cortex; therefore it allows movements like walking. Another alternative for
the paralyzed is to walk through a surrogate. Although,
the development of surrogates is miraculous it would
lead to another insidious chain of theft problems.
Over the next hundred years identity theft problems will increase. Authorities will have a harder time
telling the difference between surrogates and humans.
Whether or not it is ethically moral, people will have the
choice of living through a surrogate. Surrogates are robots that look, and shadow the actions of humans. This
will allow people to pick a preferred appearance. People
will be able to safely live through their surrogate and
explore the world by being hooked up to a machine located in their homes. For example, if a surrogate were
killed, the controller would still be alive, hooked up to
the machine. If wished, they could create another surrogate. Not only do surrogates open new doors to normalcy, but also, it opens another door to the immobile.
This advancement simply helps the handicap by allowing them to experience the sensational feat of walking
for the first time. No one shall ever be hindered to his or
her wheelchair again.
After Hurricane Katrina, most of the homes in
New Orleans were washed away. A famous foundation
that is being run by Brad Pitt is the, ―Make It Right
Foundation.‖ He is rebuilding all homes so that they‘re
eco-friendly. Perhaps, this prototype community will lay
the bricks for the communities to come. In the future, all
houses will be ―smart houses,‖ which are eco-friendly
too. These homes will be built with metal roofs absorbing less heat and reducing the need to cool a home by 20
to 70 percent. Metal roofs are durable, long lasting and
require minimal maintenance. Metal is also an excellent
surface from which to capture rainwater as another re-
Are the Walls Closing In On You?
By William Matalene
Crowded hallways? Larger class sizes? You‘re
not the only one thinking it. More than sixty new seventh graders have graced Manhasset Secondary School
this year. This massive increase has pushed our school
student population to 1451. For the 2009-2010 school
year, the student population was 1384; the year before,
1347, and during the 2007-2008school year, the Secondary School housed some 1321 students. In just four
years the student body has increased by one hundred
thirty students.
With such a large student body and budget
constraints, class sizes are hitting their maximum capacity at thirty-two. High school electives have been
reduced, making it harder for high school students and
teachers alike, as more and more kids are squeezed into
classes that were normally used to twenty kids. Personally, with most of my classes having around thirty students, it makes it extremely difficult to learn and get
some one-to-one help from a teacher. If a student has a
question, it may never be answered or addressed during
class, usually a question that many students in common
have.
from these financial markets. Unfortunately this is not
relevant to the rest of the country where manufacturing
and services are the primary sectors. The average household in America has savings of about $53,000 or less,
this is not indicative of this community. Although, some
of Manhasset is unemployed, it is not affected the community at large.
Some say the recession is over, although Warren
Buffet may disagree. Some may argue a depression is
present. Communists believe that the recession has come
to a definite halt, however, unemployment looms at almost 10%. There is no valid definition of a depression,
which may exist in the current economy. Years from now
they may or may not call this economical status a depression, although the bubble of Manhasset was indeed
greatly inflated for this period.
When, and if the bubble ever bursts in this community, it can only be tested by time. Manhasset is truly
fortunate to be sheltered by such circumstances, but
they‘re no certainties in the world. ■
homes are solar panels. Photovoltaic panels on the
roof will utilize light from the sun‘s rays to generate
electricity. Using photovoltaic as a source of electricity saves money and decreases dependence on conventional fossil fuels. Each smart house will be prepared
with a system that produces 4.0 to 6.0 K.W. of energy.
Furthermore, one negative outcome that underlies technology is obesity. In America, more than
two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight, and 34 percent are obese. (Obesity being defined as having a body-mass index more than 30 (BMI
≥ 30kg/m2)). The future people are prone to become
more than the average ―couch potato;‖ but rather reliant on machines and other devices. The ―smart
houses‖ will be equipped with computer servants. For
example, if something is desired, it‘s a click a way. It
is as simple as typing in the desired item on a remote.
To facilitate the obese all foods will be organic. Organic goods have higher nutritional value
than conventional food due to the lack of pesticides
and fertilizers. Some studies correlate pesticides in
food can cause headaches to birth defects to even cancer. This future of organic farming will eliminate
some pollution in ground water and thus create richer
soil that aids in plant growth. Consequently, the world
and the Earth itself will be eating healthier.
As global warming prolongs, natural resources will be further depleted. Slowly, the world
seems to be dying from industrial progression. In
years to come, people will become greener, and find
the rational balance between protecting the environment and rising human technology. They will come to
a consensus whereby the human fetus simultaneously
precedes the capabilities of mankind with the splendor
and necessity of mother Earth.
The people of today construct the future. The
future is like clay, highly malleable, and will be
shaped by mankind one way or another. The goal is
to make the future worthwhile! ■
Gym Lockers- For the Better or
For the Worse?
By Georgia Xenophontos
It‘s not only classes that seem over-packed.
The hallways have become so congested leaving stuThere have been several changes made to
dents no other choice but to shove smaller kids out of
our school this year, but there's one major change
their way. The hallways are like a highway full of bad
that has been brought to our attention. The high
drivers, collisions, detours, and road blockades. It‘s
school locker rooms have been redone. Everyone
impossible to get from class to class without bumping
has noticed the new lockers more negatively than
into three kids on your way. The area by the cafeteria is
positively. I personally like the new lockers because
the worst, kids trying to go up and down the stairs, kids
they're new, clean, and I get to share mine with one
entering and leaving the cafeteria, and not to mention
of my best friends. I was upset at first because I
those going to and from gym. It‘s an absolute train
wanted my own locker, but I quickly realized that

have been complaining about their sports equipment not fitting in the lockers. I'm sure the administration is aware
of this and is working on solving this problem. The only thing that disgusted me was when the girl‘s locker room
flooded. There was a stream of water that came from the blocked part of the locker room. It made its way from the
back to the second to last row, where my locker is located. Shallow puddles collected right in front of my locker.
The other students in that row and I had to get dressed in another area because it was so messy. At least it didn't
get into my locker, right? Overall I'm glad they redid the locker rooms because it feels great coming into the high
school with a brand new locker. I can't wait until this project is completed. ■

Clearer Skin
By Alexandra Boisselle
You really
are what you eat, especially when it
comes to your face.
Acne is a skin condition characterized by
whiteheads, blackheads and inflamed
red pimples or zits.
Experts suggest avoiding refined carbohydrates, such as white
flour and sugar, when trying to get clearer skin. A
diet that consists of high concentrations of white
flour and refined foods can be easily changed to
whole wheat and whole grain. Dietary fat from any
source can increase the sebum production of the
skin, leading to acne breakouts. Research has proven
that the fat content of dairy does not seem to effect
the promotion of acne breakouts. Using soymilk
instead of regular milk and other soy products such
as cheese will help control breakouts. Vegetables
and fruits are essential to any healthy diet. A diet
that is high in fiber can keep the colon clean and can
reduce toxicity. Not only might these changes help
your skin look better, but reducing your intake of
refined carbohydrates and increasing your intake of
fruits and vegetables can reduce your risk of cancer,
heart disease, and diabetes.
As tempting as it may be, do not squeeze,
scratch, rub or touch your pimples and blackheads.
These actions actually increase the sebum production. Plus, when you squeeze, you are actually rupturing the membranes below your skin, causing infection and sebum to spread underneath your skin,
resulting in more pimples.
Recent research from Australia found a
direct link between diet and complexion. After
studying the dietary habits of more than 400 elderly
people, scientists concluded that those who ate more
vegetables, fish, and olive oil over the years had
fewer wrinkles than those who had a high intake of
red meat, butter, and dairy. Here's what to eat to
meet your skin's specific needs -- plus nutrient-rich
products doctors say will offer visible results. ■
Easy Energy Boosters
By Stefani Pappas
The seemingly endless school day has ended
and you are hunger stricken. From the hours of homework keeping you up at night to the exhausting AP
exams, we could all use a boost of energy. Why resort
to sugary treats when there are five simple nutrients
that will give you energy to last the entire day? These
five key nutrients beat fatigue, improve your workout,
and fight disease.
Research over the last 20 years has proven
that our bodies need calcium, folate and Vitamin C.
However, there are several nutrients that Americans
show substantial deficiency. In fact, 28% of Americans do not get enough Vitamin E. The body needs
about 15 milligrams a day of this vitamin to protect
against heart disease and boost immunity. Since Vitamin E is found in naturally fat-rich plant foods including nuts and oils, this deficiency suggests that
Americans are not eating enough healthy fats. Stop
this now by stocking up on a well-fortified cereal
such as Total products; a cup supplies 15mg of Vitamin E.
12% of Americans are iron deficient. Researchers blame this shortage on the new and appealing meatless meals. Dr. Stella Lucia Volpe, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing claims, "Only heme ironfound in animal foods like beef, lamb, or poultry- is
directly absorbed into the body." She also stated that,
"Vegetable iron is not absorbed as efficiently." It is
imperative that you have at least 18mg of iron a day,
which aids in the flow of oxygen throughout the
body. A simple way to increase your iron intake is to
include a few servings of lean animal protein every
day. Heme iron is more prominent in red meat, and
even 10 steamed clams supplies a surprising 26.6mg
Do a Double Take
By Sophie Azran
In an ever-growing health conscientious
world, we seek foods that fulfill the craving without
the negative impact that will set us back three weeks.
As a result, our culture has developed a list of coveted
foods that are the go-to crave eliminators. What is the
issue with this so-called list of diet bites? They contain
surprising amounts of fats, sugar, and sodium. Not so
healthy if you ask this writer.
So what are these foods that have tricked us
so easily? The first is the all-time favorite, frozen yogurt. Yes, those low-fat pomegranate yogurts from
Pinkberry and Red Mango are packed with sugar and
have enough calories to be considered an entire meal.
The fabulous selection of toppings does not help much
either. Most toppings add about 10-20 calories to
whatever size cup of yogurt you have already committed yourself to ingesting.
Then we turn to look at another pet peeve of
nutritionists around the country: "sugar-free" snacks
and sodas. Nothing about them is sugar-free. The makers of such snacks and drinks just add sugar substitutes
such as Splenda and Sweet-N-Low, which really affect
our bodies the same way, if not worse. In fact, such
substitutes can cause weight gain because they leave
the body craving the sugar it was expecting.
Finally, there is the coveted I-need-to-eat-inthree-minutes-in-between-SAT-classes-and-musicrehearsal dinner: sushi. The trap here isn‘t the fresh
fish or the extremely healthy brown rice. It is not even
The Benefits of Spices
By Emilia Gardocki
It may seem hard to believe but spices have
more antioxidants than fruits. Antioxidants help our
bodies fight diseases and build a stronger immune system. Different spices benefit us in different ways. Cinnamon, for example, can lower blood
sugar and total cholesterol for people with
type 2 diabetes. Rosemary lowers the rate
of gene mutations that can potentially lead
to cancer and lowers the risk of a heart
attack by preventing damage to the blood
vessels. Paprika contains lots of antioxidants which also lowers the risk of cancer.
Garlic is another herb there provides major health benefits, such as destroying cancer cells. The list is endless, but it is worth
doing some research and seeing what is
best for your body.
Herbs can enhance the flavor of
foods and even makes it more beneficial to our health.
We can flavor meat, stew, pasta and casseroles with
basil, garlic, oregano or rosemary. To enhance the natural sweetness of foods, we can also try cinnamon, ginger
or nutmeg. We can also heat up a dish by adding black,
red or white pepper. When using fresh herbs in recipes,
we must remember to clean and cut herbs before adding
them to dishes. Gently crush them in the palm of hand
to release their flavor. Add fresh herbs at the end of
cooking, so their flavor will last.
Everything from ginger root to dandelion has a
specific function as a medicinal herb. In certain combinations, these natural wonders have been known to alleof iron for only 140 calories.
Potassium is another
nutrient that Americans do
not consume enough of- particularly less than half of
what is recommended. You
need 4,700 mg a day of this
nutrient, which aids in muscle
contraction and regulates
fluid and mineral balance
when the body sweats. This
deficiency stems from the
fact that Americans do not eat
enough fruits and vegetables.
Try a baked potato or white
beans for a boost.
Zinc deficiency can
result in diverse, profound
the soy sauce (which, in all truth is only good in extreme moderation), but rather, it is the Americanized
versions of the traditional dish. Steer away from the
rolls based in ingredients such as cream cheese, mayo,
and shredded cheese. You might as well go to the deli
and have a bagel. The worst mistake you can make
here, however, is ordering tempura. Tempura products
are battered and fried. You might as well ask the waiter
for shrimp tenders.
What‘s the moral of this nutrition story? Not
everything is what it seems. Do your research when
deciding what certain snack will be your new afterschool hunger-quencher. And remember: it is okay to
splurge once in a while—just not every day. ■
viate everything from acne to infertility. St. John's
Wort has shown great promise as a mild antidepressant; Catnip works quite well as a fever reducer; ginger aids digestion; and the list goes on and on. As always, nature has found a way to assist us in a variety
of health-related issues.
Herbs also have significant results in natural
beauty and skin care.
Among some of the common herbs used for skin
care, neem, turmeric and
holy basil are said to be
great in enhancing your
beauty. Holy basil when
mixed with neem powder,
mint leaves and a little
turmeric powder, are good
for dark spots on the face.
Tea Tree oil is believed to
be excellent for hair
growth and for banishing
lice.
As a natural moisturizer, unrefined Shea Butter can be used on the skin for softening it. It is also
good for cracked heels and improving the appearance
of stretch marks. If you massage your scalp with Jojoba oil, your hair grows wonderfully well. The extract
of the berries of the small palm, Saw Palmetto, also
works very well for improving the scalp and the skin
condition. Aloe vera is known to work on the skin for
giving it a radiant appearance and a smooth, youthful
look. basil, a plant considered sacred in India, is used
quite extensively in cosmetics. ■
problems including impaired synthesis of
DNA, RNA, and protein. Americans only
receive 72% of what is recommended. 8mg
of zinc per day is needed to help regulate
your metabolism. Beans are a excellent
source of zinc, as well as wheat germ,
which you can sprinkle over your oatmeal
in the morning for an extra nutrient boost.
Magnesium is essential for energy production and muscle function, and you should
have 320mg a day of this nutrient. This
problem correlates with the fact that you are
probably not getting enough seafood. Next
time you order dinner at a restaurant, order
a fish entree such as halibut, which has
greater nutrient benefits than any other dish
on the menu. Not a fish fan? Try bran cereal, cooked spinach or black beans. ■

Wellness
The Sunshine Vitamin
By Maria Dello, CN
Summertime, known for
happy days and bronze
tans which are a common
pleasure of summer. Before we hit the beach, we
make sure we have an
amour of suntan lotions
protecting us from the
harmful rays. However, are
we also blocking out a
vital nutrient that protects our bones? Vitamin D.
What is Vitamin D? Vitamin D, calciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is found in food, but
also can be made by your body after exposure to
ultraviolet rays from the sun. Vitamin D exists in
several forms, each with a different activity. The
liver and kidney help convert vitamin D to its active
hormone form. The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium
and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of
calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones.
It promotes bone mineralization in concert with a
number of other vitamins, minerals, and hormones.
Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle,
soft, or misshapen. Vitamin D prevents rickets in
children and weak bones in adults. There is a growing awareness of the prevalence of low levels of
vitamin D. Recent findings show the importance of
vitamin D and how low levels are becoming more
common than ever.
So what exactly can vitamin D do for you?
And why would you want to supplement with it if
you‘re protecting yourself from those harmful rays?
There is indication that certain groups of
people have greater needs for vitamin D than others,
based on age. Vitamin D requirements increase as
we age. Obese individuals appear to have lower levels of vitamin D too, possibly due to reduced
bioavailability. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with insulin deficiency and insulin resistance.
In fact, last year it was shown that vitamin D deficiency is likely to be a major factor for the development of Type I Diabetes in children. Fortified foods
are the major dietary sources of vitamin D. Prior to
the fortification of milk products in the 1930s, rickets (a bone disease seen in children) was a major
public health problem in the United States. Milk in
the United States is fortified with 10 micrograms
(400 IU) of vitamin D per quart, and rickets is now
uncommon in the US. Supplementation through diet
is challenging because few foods contain vitamin D,
especially the vitamin D3 form of vitamin D which
is most similar to sunshine. This vitamin D3 form is
found only in animal sources
Obviously, I recommend you continue to
put on your sunscreen and before you start supplementing with vitamin D, check with your doctor to
check your vitamin D levels.
If you do need to supplement your levels of
vitamin D a fine source would be cod liver oil, an
old-fashioned remedy that now comes in different
flavors. Or perhaps you can take the pill form, but
be sure it is mercury free. Be wise and ask a professional which is best. For more information contact
Maria Dello, Certified Medical Nutritionist at
www.dellonutritionals.com. ■
Although best-known for supporting bone health,
Vitamin D3 is thought to have a number of additional roles in your body. A recent document on
vitamin D attributes these roles . . .
Helps regulate levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood.
Promotes bone formation and mineralization.
Essential in the development of a strong skeletal
system.
Regulates cellular integrity.
Promotes healthy immune function.
Plays a role in healthy blood sugar levels.
Helps improve mood.
Helps promote a healthy heart.
Helps regulate proper weight.
Helps maintain a healthy reproductive system.
Helps promote healthy tissue.
Helps contribute to a sense of well-being.
Flip-Flops, or Fit Flops?
By Kiki Barnes
It is common knowledge that junk food is
bad. With all of the hype about calories and cholesterol, a new generation of Americans is making healthier choices with regards to their food intake and is
only eating junk food in moderation. However, what
most people do not know is that some types of footwear should also be worn in moderation. Flip-flops are
gaining recognition nationwide as the junk food of
people‘s feet due to the long-term health problems that
they cause.
American College of Sports Medicine researchers at Auburn University conducted a study two
years ago with 39 college students, having the students
wear nothing but flip-flops all summer – the results:
flip-flops actually alter the way that the wearers walk.
You may not notice it when you‘re wearing them, but
the human foot actually scrunches at the toes and turns
slightly inward reflexively to keep the flip-flops from
falling off of the feet. Now what‘s the problem with
this? The problem is that this scrunching motion
stretches the plantar fascia, which is the connective
tissue that runs from one‘s heel to one‘s toe. Also, while
wearing flip-flops people naturally take smaller steps.
Long-term, there is always the possibility of developing
chronic tendinitis or overuse injuries not only in the ankle but also the knee, the hip and the back.
There are those people who have been dubbed
―barefooters,‖ or people who prefer to wear no shoes.
These people believe that walking barefoot is healthier
than walking in any kind of shoe. They use the argument
that humans are not meant to wear shoes, and that everyone should simply walk barefoot, just as nature intended.
Thinking in a more historical standpoint, the barefooters
are right in that the human foot was not meant to have a
covering. However, the human foot was also not meant
to walk on pavement; it was not meant to walk on hardwood floors or marble tiles or linoleum or any type of
the artificially flattened ground that covers the globe –
that is the reason that shoes were created.
A good shoe should have two things: an arch for support, and padding to absorb the shock that a step makes
when the foot impacts with the ground. The typical flip-
flop has a thin, flat sole, having neither an arch nor
padding; these flip-flops are good only in moderation,
and they are perfect for wearing over soft terrain, such
as the beach. If you are reluctant to give up wearing
your beloved flip-flops, then the best alternatives are
Fitflop sandals. These shoes have larger straps that
secure your feet to the shoe more effectively, and have
a lot of padding that absorbs the step shock (see
www.fitflop .com for more information.)
Like junk food, flip-flops have their appeal.
Flip-flops are easy to put on, they keep your feet cool
throughout the day, and they even look stylish. Now it
is fall, the weather is getting colder, and people are
transitioning into ―winter shoes‖ after an entire summer of flip-flop wearing. There is always some discomfort when people make this transition because of
the difference in the way the plantar fascia is moved.
Next summer, you may want to ask yourself if these
perks are worth the health risks of long-term flip flop
use. ■

Broadway on Broadway
By Michael Domanico
Has the expensive cost of Broadway
tickets got you down?
Well, to kick off the new
Broadway season, there
was the annual Broadway on Broadway concert in the heart of Times
Square, and it's free!
With a stage in the middle of 43rd Street and a
crowd that stretches past
46th Street, the outdoor
concert, which took
place on Sunday, September 12th, certainly attracts a diverse group of people, and for good reason. Performers from practically
every musical on Broadway (including upcoming
shows) come out and give a stripped down performance of a single song for the fans. Everybody from the
incumbent Elphaba over at Wicked, the current Jets of
West Side Story, to les Cagelles from La Cage aux
Folles were there to let fans try a diverse selection of
Broadway's best. The concert had a few clunkers, too.
The upcoming musicalization of Elf, everybody's favorite six-foot elf Christmas movie, looked rather
miss-it-if-you-can, but the song selection could have
just been poor. Even a solid show like Promises,
Promises had
a miserable
song selection,
so
maybe
Elf
will be better
than its preview
song
suggests.

the youngest winner of American Idol ever. A rousing
final number had Tony Award winners Karen Olivo
and Lin Manuel Miranda performing a duet of Jay-Z's
―Empire State of Mind,‖ complete with a theatrical
finish in which tons of confetti were poured onto the
thousands of spectators in Times Square at the close
of the song. This is Broadway after all! ■
Vampire Weekend Concert Review
By Casey McNamara
In the past decade, few bands have been as
polarizing as Vampire Weekend among music fans.
The unapologetically worldly, fun form of pop music created in their 2008 debut drew criticism from
bloggers, many feeling that their refreshing incorporation of African beats and classical music was
inauthentic. Critics cited their Ivy League degrees
(the band formed as seniors at Columbia) and
preppy aesthetic (typical stage dress: Sperry‘s,
Wayfarers and Ralph Lauren) as symbols of their
so-called rip-off of African music. In a cheeky New
York Times interview, the self-description of their
sound as ―Upper West Side Soweto‖ only added
fuel to the fire. The backlash caused by Vampire
Weekend‘s popularity was summed up best by one
particularly idiotic journalist: ―Vampire Weekend is
indie-rock‘s answer to Christopher Columbus, except instead of ―discovering‖ America, they
―discovered‖ African music.‖
Luckily, there was no room for political
correctness on Wednesday, September 15th, when
the boys kicked off the first of their three night sold
out residency at Radio City Music Hall. Earlier this
year, their second EP, Contra, debuted at number
one on the Billboard Hot 100, 17 spots higher than
their first album did. If the cover art, depicting a
blonde girl wearing a polo, wasn‘t obvious enough,
their new batch of songs proved that Vampire Weekend
were staying true to themselves. The set opened with
‗Holiday‘, the short and sweet third single off of Contra, which got the audience dancing like crazy. Unfortunately, that included the Drunk Tall Couple in front of
me, who used the other upbeat songs also as an excuse
to ironically fist pump. Aside from the constant distraction that was the DTC, my friends and I were able to see
the extravagant lighting designed by Barf, the band‘s
lighting manager, perfectly from our ―obstructed view‖.
However, the overall design was pretty simple, with
cool chandeliers reminiscent of their debut‘s artwork
bobbing up and down behind the band. The various exotic instruments featured in their albums were done
mostly on electronic keyboard, with the exception of a
cellist coming out for ―Taxi Cab‖, a cool ballad about
butlers & aristocrats. The band energetically covered
almost their whole catalogue, including fan favorites
(okay, maybe just mine) ‗M79‘ and ‗Bryn‘. Frontman
Ezra Koenig explained, ―I know everyone is feeling a
little self conscious, just walking into big ole Radio
City. Don‘t worry about it, don‘t worry about it. Really
what‘s important is to get that energy going…sing
‗Woaaahh!‘‖ After a transient hour and a half set, the
band returned to the stage for the three song encore,
including the grand finale, ‗Walcott‘. Everyone was
singing along. ■
The Social Network
By Michael Domanico
(Disclaimer: Upon arriving home from seeing David
Fincher's The Social Network, I popped open my laptop
in order to write this review. Before even opening Word,
I found myself on Facebook without even realizing it. It's
the little ironies in life that are the most appreciated.)
To say Facebook has been successful would be
like saying The Beatles were merely well-liked; Facebook is currently being used by a fourteenth of the
world's total population and continues to grow. There are
more users of Facebook than people in the United States,
so how exactly did this website start? The Social Network
provides an exaggerated tale of how enigmatic college
student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) hacked, programmed, lied, and fought for Facebook to ignite the
social revolution it's started. To read the plot in a review
would be a waste. It may be the story that initially brings
the audience in to see the film, but it's the stylistic and
artistic flourishes that elevate the film from ―good‖ to a
remarkable feat in modern film-making.
Aaron Sorkin's (The West Wing) script moves
along at a '40s screwball pace (with the alternating comedy and drama to match). The dialogue is cutting and
sharp, with the relatively fresh-faced Eisenberg delivering the best of the screenplay's lines with the right
amounts of sarcasm, irony, and acerbic wit. Andrew Garfield, playing the duped former-partner of Zuckerberg
Eduardo Saverin, anchors The Social Network as its
moral compass. The nuance Garfield gives to Saverin
clearly demonstrates the slight shifts within the always
questionable morality of Zuckerberg's pursuits, and it
helps make the more earnest Saverin a perfect foil to the
disingenuous Zuckerberg. Garfield is best in show in the
film's strong ensemble and, come February, should be at
the podium of the Kodak Theatre accepting his reward.
Justin Timberlake, as Napster co-founder and resident
bad boy Sean Parker, proves that he's a triple threat.
Parker's business-oriented lifestyle and lack of sympathy
for anything that doesn't earn him money is the perfect fit
for real life media entrepreneur Timberlake. Rounding
out the main cast is Armie Hammer in a dual role, playing both Winklevoss twins who felt Zuckerberg stole
their idea. Hammer makes both twins distinguishable
from one another without anything gimmicky (they wear
different colors! One has a beauty mark!). For a cast this
young, it's surprising that each main cast member could
tackle Sorkin's fast moving dialogue so adeptly.
David Fincher, already one of the most revered
modern auteurs, structures The Social Network in a typical biopic fashion with a twist. A lawsuit shown in the
present, between the Winklevoss twins and Zuckerberg,
is explained with flashbacks. But there's another lawsuit
with ex-best friend Saverin, who's suing Zuckerberg for
hundreds of millions of dollars for his rightful share in
Facebook. Cue even more flashbacks, revealing more and
more about Zuckerberg and the shady founding of Facebook. With the film, Fincher presents ethically ambiguous characters who make it practically impossible to differentiate between right and wrong. (An infinitely more
gripping premise than films with black and white definitions of what is good and what is evil.) One of the film's
most riveting moments comes late into the third act,
when Saverin realizes he's being cheated out of money by
Zuckerberg and Parker. The confrontation, a volatile
break-up if there ever was one, is juxtaposed with the
celebration of Facebook's one millionth user. Was
Saverin holding Zuckerberg's dream back to get to this
millionth user? Was Zuckerberg's treatment of Saverin
cruel and unusual? Unlike other movies, The Social Network challenges movie-goers to come to their own conclusions. With its fast pace, vague morality of its characters, and the horizonless possibilities for Facebook, the
entire film feels like a race where the finish line is a work
in progress. To say The Social Network is merely successful would be like saying the Beatles were enjoyed;
it's a film that perfectly captures the generation of ―Me!
Me! Me!‖ and stores it in a time-capsule for future generations to look back on and marvel at life back when
Facebook was king. And, thanks to Zuckerberg, Facebook will probably still be king.

The VMAs
By Michael Domanico
If Lady Gaga is covered in meat from head to
toe, and Cher has reached all the way back to the '80s
section of her closet in order to bring out the ―If I Could
Turn Back Time‖ outfit, it can only mean two things: the
producers of the upcoming film Burlesque are crossmarketing geniuses, or it's time for the VMAs again. Or
maybe it's a little bit of both. The VMAs were on Sunday, September 12th, and they were hosted by E!'s resident funny-lady Chelsea Handler. These VMAs were the
highest rated in almost a decade, which is understandable. Fans wanted closure on the seemingly neverending saga of Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West, Lady Gaga
was nominated
for
thirteen
awards, and the
VMAs have been
gaining a reputation as a place
where media controversies
are
born (Madonna
kissed
who!?
Britney
wore
what!?). It's time
to recount the
highs, lows, and
the in-betweens
of MTV's biggest
night
(so rry,
MTV
Movie
Awards!):
Highs
Lady Gaga's big win for Video of the Year
helped justify the reason the VMAs exist: to reward the
few music videos every year that have a profound effect
on mainstream pop culture, and if any recent music
video was proof that the music video is more relevant
than ever, it was ―Bad Romance.‖ And Cher introducing
the award was the cherry on top. Also, Gaga proved her
vocal skills by singing an upcoming lyric off of her new
album, Born This Way, as she accepted the award. Two
cherries on top.
The performance of ―Dog Days Are Over‖ by
Florence + the Machine was meticulously choreographed and proved to be both soothing and energizing.
Once a performance begins to produce paradoxes like
that, it's clear that one for the ages. Bonus points for
being one of the few musicians who knew how to stage
their song.
Lows
The arena, which included many circular
stages, but not a podium (or even a microphone stand,
for that matter) was a step backwards. Winners had to
hold their VMA in one hand as they held the microphone in the other. That doesn't bode well if you're carrying a purse made out of meat. (But, then again, what
good comes out of carrying a purse made out of meat?)
And the fact that there were many circular stages obviously threw off Justin Bieber. The 16 year old VMA
winner for Best New Artist couldn't figure out how to
get to the proper stage to accept his award, but that
might have more to do
with the fact that he
probably hasn't been to
school in the past two
years.
-The circular
stages not only left the
winners trying to juggle a VMA and a microphone at the same
time, but it also left the
performers with an
uncomfortably large
amount of space. You
could be like Hayley
Williams and sing with
your band all the way
in the back of the stage,
or you could be like Kanye West and opt for a keyboard
in the center stage, but it seemed that many of the performers were unsure of how to use all the room provided
for them.
The beating of a dead horse known as KanyeGate. The performers who were expected to deliver the
most, Kanye West and Taylor Swift, ended up disappointing. As a slap in the face to West, Swift ditched the
upbeat, hilarious song-style she effectively used on Saturday Night Live and opted to sit sans shoes in a leather
chair, singing about innocence while proving she's not
strong when it comes to live performances. Eventually
she got up from her chair and was swallowed up and lost
in the enormous stage. (If I could get inside Taylor's
head for a moment, and I probably can, my theory on
why she wasn't wearing shoes is that it was probably
some obnoxious extended metaphor about how she's the
Cinderella of the VMAs or something like that.) West,
clad in an unbearably red suit, opted for a new, Swiftfree song about unprintable expletives as ballerinas
danced across the stage. I'm all for moving past the entire ―Imma-letchu-finish‖ controversy, but getting
bogged down in self-seriousness at the VMAs is like
using the world's finest paints in a coloring book.
Ke$ha wore a literal trash bag that had been
transformed into the world's worst quasi-dress. When
you're on a successful tour with Rihanna and your album
and your singles have done very well and you're still
trying to play up the trailer trash thing, it stops being
―ironic‖ and starts becoming annoying.
In-Betweens:
As a host, Chelsea Handler proved to be rather
hit and miss. Drug jokes? Not funny. Getting into a hot
tub with a select quartet of Jersey Shore cast members?
Marginally funny. Managing to snag Lindsay Lohan for
some good old self-deprecation? Priceless.
A ―surprise performance‖ by Rihanna shouldn't
really be that shocking. Her performance of ―Love the
Way You Lie‖ with Eminem was quite good, but the
fact that this was labeled as a ―surprise‖ is odd. When is
Rihanna not at these awards shows? Places where it
might actually be surprising if Rihanna were to suddenly
appear and perform would be the school auditorium,
Uncle Giuseppe's, or the Princess castle Taylor Swift
(presumably) lives in. Not the VMAs. ■
Fashion’s Night Out…what it’s all about?
By Katherine Nevitt
To define the figment that is creativity seem
inconceivable- but the tangibility of clothing- of fashion and person style actualizes a threshold in channeling that introspective art. Clothing conveys attitude,
our personalities and passions- providing whimsicality
- malleable lawlessness, and unending possibilities.
Though some find couture outlandish, and the fashion
industry altogether garishly frivolous- the runways are
tantamount to a museum.
Fashion week amasses everyone whose anyone in the industry into the 23 square miles that is
Manhattan- and Friday September 10th, Fashion‘s
Night Out, in its second year, kicked it all off. Over
800 stores spanning the 5 boroughs participated; ex-
tended hours, quality bargains, charity events, live DJ‘s
and dance parties, models and celebrities adorning the
walkways. Beside the glitzy lights, and deafening music
the real captivation were the regular people, just like you
and me- except dressed better. Everyone embodied his
or her own personal style; the sheer atmosphere of the
night was overwhelming. Men with rolled up jeans, and
oxford shoes to sport, women in shoulder padded wildly
pattern dresses. Everyone shuffling past each other, passively eyeing, silently approving, and swelling with jealousy for others‘ ensembles-the city was a refuge for expression that night.
With a few friends, I glided through the streets,
Soho street style, from F.N.O
speechless- watching the vivid people of New York City
pass by. I was in a virtual gallery of style. A woman
struts by, sporting a delicate lace shirt, a blazer, and an
eccentric Kenyan textile skirt, with Jeffrey Campbell
platform wedges. A man flaunts his snug fitting jeans
and horn-rimmed glasses. Elated, and left in awe, I was
honored to be surrounded by such fashionable, individualistic characters. Everyone was brought together for the
same thing- fashion (and shopping.). The whole night
was surreal- and Fashion‘s Night out was just a snapshot
of the liveliness that defines the city. Fashion‘s Night

Science & Faith – The Script
By Jen Aitken
Over a year after the release of their first album
featuring hits such as ―Breakeven‖ and ―The Man Who
Can‘t Be Moved‖, The Script has returned. The Irish rock
trio is back in action with the release of their second album, Science & Faith. After the success of their debut
self-titled album, which sold over two million albums,
The Script has returned with ten new tracks that have already found their way to the number one spot on the
charts in the UK and Ireland.
The eagerly anticipated new album revolves
around the central theme of love and through simple lyrics hits hard at complex emotions. The album is done in
similar fashion to The Script‘s first album, using lyrics to
tell a story of deep emotion and hope. Songs, such as
―You Won‘t Feel a Thing‖ and ―Science and Faith‖ draw
attention to simple guitar strums that evolve into more
upbeat, uplifting numbers. Other promising songs include the power ballad, ―Nothing‖, that tells the story of
lost love.
Quick hit songs, such as ―For the First Time‖
showcase lead singer Danny O‘Donoghue‘s melodious
tenor voice as he soars through choruses and over the
steady beat. To the band, the number one hit single holds
more meaning to them, drawing inspiration for the lyrics
from the economic recession in Ireland and wishing to
convey a message of hope in times of despair.
Fans of The Script will be equally as satisfied
with the second album as they were the first; however,
fans looking for something new and different will find
themselves at a loss. Released on September 10th in Ireland, and subsequently release in the UK, the album is
set to be released in the US on October 5th. If you can‘t
wait until then, you can also purchase the album at Amazon.com. (4 out of 5 stars) ■
While an End to the Harry Potter Films Nears, the Legacy of the Wizarding World Lives On
~ ~ ~ ‘The Boy Who Lived’ Lives on Forever
By Claudia Sbuttoni
Graced by their presence since 2001, Potter
fans around the world are grieving as the last of the
Harry Potter films approaches the final stretch. After
spending ten years together, even the cast members are
exhibiting signs of distress, ―I will be devastated [when
it's over],‖ Daniel Radcliffe told People at the National
Movie Awards in London. ―There is nothing I watch
without it triggering a series of memories. Everything
[about the films] is so linked to my life. At the same
time, it is exciting. It is the end.‖ Potter fans have taken
to Internet on sites such as mugglenet.com to air their
thoughts on the end of the films, ―Good bye to a story
who played a role in my childhood and my 16 years of
love, loyalty, and magic, gone but not forgotten. Live
on the love and wonderful people who played a role in
our childhoods! J.K. Rowling, I thank you for the best
story that had grown into a worldwide love and loyalty
franchise with love and tears I thank you for all this.
Goodbye to all the characters we knew and loved. Live
on, Harry!‖ J.K. Rowling is the first, self-made billionaire author in history, selling more than 400 million
books in 69 languages in 200 countries around the
world. Rowling describes the final book of Harry Potter
as extremely difficult to finish and although she knew
the series had to eventually end, she says, ―...you can-
not prepare yourself for it. So even though I‘d always
known it would be 7 books... when it ended I was in a
slight state of shock...Initially, I was elated but then
there came a point, I cried as I‘ve only cried once before in my life and that was when my mother died. It
was uncontrollable and I‘m not a big crier.‖ As for future books, she gives us hope in saying, ―I feel I am
done, but you never know.‖
The Harry Potter blockbusters are the highest
grossing movie franchise in Hollywood history, earning
over $5.3 billion worldwide. The last installment of the
series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has been
divided into 2 segments with Part I set for November
19, 2010 and Part II for sometime in July of 2011. The
film adaptation of the seventh and final novel is currently in post-production after shooting wrapped up in
this past June. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is
the fastest selling book of all time. Because of the colossal success of the films and books, Universal and
Warner Brothers have created ―The Wizarding World

Florida. The park officially opened to the public in June
of 2010. The theme park is home to a recreated version

Glen Cove’s Ninth Annual Poker Run
By Samuel Bartels
Poker, and fast boats? It's a poker run! It's a
boating event that any power boater would be interested
in. A poker run is an event where high performance
speedboats go to 5 docks on a marked out course, picking up a poker card at each stop. Upon returning to the
main event dock, the poker cards are opened and the
boat with the highest hand wins cash and/or a trophy.
The 2010 Glen Cove Poker Run was held on Saturday,
September 18th, and I was lucky enough to ride along in
a pace boat for the event. 17 of the slickest boats in the
northeast waited at the starting line in Long Island
Sound. The pace boat was called PARTYMASTER and
it led the fleet to the starting line! As pace boat, we
took off from the dock and went ahead of the other
boats to drop the start flag. My role in the poker run
was to hold up the yellow flag for the start.
The flag is held from the marina all the way to
the start point, and no boat can pass until I drop it. Once
the flag is dropped, I hold up the green flag, the universal symbol for GO!!! And that's when you get loud
noise, speeding boats all around, and lots of churned up
water! They all took off and we were left behind with
all the 110+ mph boats already in the distance, and the
slower boats hanging around near us. The Grand Prize
winner was Joey Barrese in his 27 Activator with 622
cubic inches of raw power. He got a two pair: Ace‘s
and 10‘s that netted him $1,250.00! ■

into a Quidditch match.‖
―The last trace of steam evaporated in the autumn air. The train rounded a corner. Harry‘s hand was
still raised in farewell. ―He‘ll be alright,‖ murmured
Ginny. As Harry looked at her, he lowered his hand
absentmindedly and touched the lightning scar on his

Geneva
By Claudia Sbuttoni
The mountains surrounding Lake Geneva are
only a glimpse of the beauty encompassed by the second-most-populous city in Switzerland. Geneva is a
global city and is recognized as the third European
financial center after London and Zurich. Dating back
to the Protestant Reformation, Geneva has practiced a
tolerant and accepting approach to diversity, while
also proclaiming its support for neutrality. Geneva is
also the European Headquarters for the United Nations
and the Red Cross.
The Jet d‘Eau is Geneva‘s most famous monument and is also one of the tallest fountains in the world.
Located at the point where Lake Geneva empties into the
Rhone River, the fountain jets 132 gallons of water per
second to an altitude of 459 feet at a speed of 124 mph.
At any given moment, there are about 1849 gallons of
water in the air!
Another popular tourist destination
is the Old Town or Vieille Ville. The district
contains some of Geneva‘s leading attractions, including the Barbier-Mueller Museum, the Cathedrale St-Pierre and the Maison Tavel. The Old City is also home to the

Lake Geneva is divided into two
parts, 59.53% of it belongs to Switzerland
and the other 40.47% belongs to France. It
is among the most visited and largest lakes
in western Europe. Lake Geneva was and
continues to be a popular vacationing spot for many.
Mary and Percy Shelley, along with Lord Byron, holidayed by lake and wrote ghost stories, one of which became the basis for the novel Frankenstein.■
Technology
A Planned City – To An Extreme
By William Matalene
In the Arabian Desert, a self-sufficient city is
on the rise. The United Arab Emirates announced back
in 2007 that they were in the works of creating ―the
world‘s first zero-carbon city‖ called Masdar, located
twenty miles away from Abu Dhabi. This claim caused
disbelief amongst many Westerners who viewed it as a
joke. Several weeks ago though, skeptics were put to
shame when several
people moved into
one section of the
project to be completed.
This
wizardly city, as some
call it is designed by
Foster & Partners,
who plan to create a
perfect square, a mile
on each side. This city
is raised twenty-three
feet above the desert
in order to capture the
breeze. One goal of Masdar is to create an alternative
more chic look that most of the hyper-developed Arabic cities have become accustomed to. The lead designer Norma Foster looked at 16th century Arabic settlements in order to construct this marvelous city.
What Mr. Foster found in his research was
that many of the settlements were elevated, for defensive purposes but also to utilize the strong wind. Narrow streets and wind tunnels maximized the amount of
breeze the cities could get. Using this past knowledge,
Foster worked with environmentalist to combine these
old practices with new technology, allowing the city of
Masdar to be70 degrees cooler. This would reduce the
amount electricity needed to run the city in half. Going
back to its claim of being a zero-carbon city, 90 percent of the city will be fueled by solar power, and incinerating waste would produce the other 10 percent.
But what about the carbon exhaust from cars?
Foster dealt with that issue by not allowing the use of
combustion-engine vehicles. Instead, underneath the
city there will be a system of electric cars that will
transport people and freight around. On that same
merit, he placed all of the major utility buildings like a
54-acre photovoltaic field and water treatment plants
far away from the city.
The claims of this upcoming development

seem too good to be true. Foster himself claimed
that it felt like Disneyland, ―Disneyland is attractive because all the service is below ground. We do
the same here—it is literally a walled city. Traditional cars are stopped at the edges.‖ Elevators
aren‘t in plain sight, and walking is the only way to
get around the city. Not only does this reduce resource consumption, it also
promotes a healthy life
style.
The major flaw of
Foster‘s design is that Masdar is designed to house a
population of 90,000,
which makes it an ideal
place for researchers and
workers of the city, but to
have such a precisely
planned city to satisfy the
needs of millions is very
unlikely for now. Masdar is
just another extravagant playground for wealthy
and elite to play in. ■
On August 27th, Amazon released yet another
addition to the electronic reader competition with its new
Kindle and the Kindle 3G. While still keeping its promise
of 60-second low-priced downloadable books, the Kindle
has been enhanced and improved in a variety ways.
In comparison with the older generation Kindle,
the new Kindle is sleeker and richer in more ways than
one. Physically speaking, the new Kindle weighs in less at
8.5 ounces, is slightly smaller in the body, but not the
screen. The superior screen has better contrast for reading
and has no glare, allowing you to read in bright sunlight.
The sleek design also includes page turn buttons that make
less noise to not only improve your reading experience, but
the experience for those around you. Internally, the Kindle
has been improved greatly with a new battery life that lasts
up to one month with the wireless turned off and up to
three weeks with the wireless turned on. Through minor
improvements such as faster page turns, and an enhanced
PDF reader that allows you to look up words, create highlights and notes, and carry PDFs and documents with ease,
the Kindle has stepped up its game. Furthermore, the Kindle can now hold up to 3,500 books in comparison with its
previous 1,500 book capacity and it doesn‘t just stop there.
The Kindle also allows you access to the internet with its improved browser, as well as access to magazines and
newspapers with its free Wi-Fi.
The technology of the Kindle comes at no small price, but it is not exorbitant like the iPad. For $139 you
can purchase the Kindle and for fifty more dollars at $189 you can purchase the Kindle 3G, which offers free 3G
coverage with no monthly charges. The 3G‘s battery life is shorter with the wireless turned on, but still lasts for an
extraordinary ten days. The Kindle is currently in stock and available for purchase at Amazon.com. As the New York
Times put it, the ―new Kindle leaves rivals farther back‖ and is likely to become yet another Amazon bestseller. ■
