Thank you to our participating chefs and
restaurants for making TEL HI’s 125th anniversary
so deliciously memorable!
Butterfly – Chef Robert Lam
Vietnam-born Chef Lam calls what he does, “Asian within Asian,”
pulling from Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
culinary traditions. In 2001, Lam bought Butterfly, San Francisco’s
ever-popular waterfront restaurant. Subsequently the San Francisco
Chronicle named Lam a “Rising Star Chef.” In 2009, he purchased
Eastside West, a restaurant and bar in San Francisco’s Marina district.
Most recently, he opened Sammy’s Aloha, a Hawaiian farm-to-table
takeout concept that has quickly earned an enthusiastic following!
Lam graduated from the University of San Francisco and The Culinary
Institute of America in New York, and completed a post-graduate
fellowship with the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone.
Dobbs Ferry – Chef Michael Yakura
Chef Michael (Mike) Yakura was the Corporate Chef of Ozumo
Concepts International overseeing all three Ozumo Restaurant
locations. In 2003 Yakura was appointed the Executive Chef at Le
Colonial San Francisco, and his enhancement of the menu brought
the restaurant to three-star status by Michael Bauer. He was also
honored as one of the “Rising Star Chefs of 2006.” He has also
appeared on Bravo’s Top Chef (Seasons 1 and 2), California Country
and Feast or Famine, a culinary reality show that he co-hosted for
almost three years.
6
Fog Harbor Fish House – Chef Adolfo Soto
Executive Chef Adolfo Soto started his restaurant career with
Real Restaurants, working at some of the Bay Area’s most wellknown establishments during his six-year tenure. In 1996, he began
working at Simco Restaurants at Pier Market Restaurant and
was then promoted to head chef at Dante’s Restaurant. In 2001,
Adolfo was promoted to executive chef when Simco Restaurants
purchased Chic’s Seafood, now known as Fog Harbor Fish House.
Now 20 years later, Adolfo’s passion for cooking and his flair for
creating new, innovative menu items continue. When he’s not
dreaming up specials of the day, Adolfo enjoys preparing meals for
his family and friends.
Original Joe’s
Original Joe’s is the oldest of all existing Joe’s restaurants and the
innovator of what is now nationally known as the “Joe’s Concept.”
With its signature red leather booths, legendary smooth cocktails,
and renowned Italian-American menu, Joe’s has come to signify its
own Northern California category of cuisine and symbolizes classic
Italian-American comfort food at its finest.
Ozumo – Chef Masa Hamaya and Sushi Chef Yoshi Hirota
Executive Chef Masa Hamaya had 10 years of executive culinary
training in Tokyo before relocating to the United States. He is the
former Head Sushi Chef of Uchiko in Austin, Texas, and he worked
directly with Top Chef winner Paul Qui.
Executive Sushi Chef Yoshi Hirota was born in Kobe, Japan, and has
been working in restaurants since his early teens. When he was 20,
he decided to move to San Francisco. Yoshi has been a sushi chef
now for 34 years. He’s worked in many San Francisco restaurants,
including Kinokawa Restaurant, Fuku Sushi, Akasaka, Osome, and
Kitahama in Palo Alto. He has served as executive sushi chef at
Ozumo San Francisco for the past seven years.
Park Tavern – Chef Jennifer Puccio
Jennifer Puccio, native east coaster and executive chef/partner
of Park Tavern and Marlowe restaurants, is a culinary dynamo that
knows how to cook delicious food with flavor. Puccio’s culinary
credits include working with acclaimed chef, author, and James
Beard Award winner Anna Sortun of Oleana (Cambridge, MA),
where she learned the art of creating balance while working with
bold, bright Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors. Puccio’s
credits include Daniel Patterson’s former restaurant Elisabeth Daniel,
Rivoli, famed vegetarian restaurant Ubuntu (Napa, CA), Ramblas,
and Cortez, where she earned three stars from the San Francisco
Chronicle, an honor she earned again in April 2010 for Marlowe.
Piperade – Chef Gerald Hirigoyen
Chef Gerald Hirigoyen’s grew up in the Basque region of France
surrounded by a cooking culture. After a patisserie apprenticeship
in his hometown of Biarritz, Hirigoyen perfected his trade at the
famous patisserie Jean Millet in Paris. In 1980, he moved to San
7
Francisco and began incorporating fresh ingredients into simple
yet scrumptious dishes that echo both the local and homeland spirit.
In 1991, he became “an instant start” after opening Fringale with
a partner. In 2002, Chef Hirigoyen and his wife, Cameron, opened
Piperade, brining the French-Basque flavors he was raised on to
downtown San Francisco. Two years later, he opened Bocadillos
Wine + Tapas.
Hirigoyen’s numerous accomplishments and awards include being
named one of the “Best New Chefs in America” by Food & Wine
Magazine, “Chef of the Year” by San Francisco Magazine (1995 and
2003), and a nomination by his peers for the James Beard Award
for “Best Chef, California.” He is a recipient and a chevalier of the
Ordre du Merite Agricole, and a member of the prestigious Maitres
Cuisiniers de France. He has also appeared on numerous television
programs and has published three cookbooks.
Scoma’s – Chef Efren Sandoval and
Culinary Director Gurdon Drysdale
Efren Sandoval is a natural-born culinary mind. Originally from
Michoacán, Mexico, he moved to the United States to pursue
his passion in the culinary arts. Efren began as a dishwasher at
Dante’s, and in only four years moved into a supervisor position. In
an effort to excel and grow his career, Efren simultaneously held
positions of shift leader at Café Benne, and Sous Chef at Cioppino.
In each position, Efren exercised his creativity and impeccable
organizational skills in the kitchen, finding unique blends to entice
the palate while seamlessly executing kitchen operations. Efren
joined the Scoma’s team as Executive Chef in 2015.
At a young age, Gordon Drysdale reached the realization that
cooking was an art, and with his love for the visual arts, he has never
looked back. Now, a 40-year veteran in the culinary field, Drysdale
is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. He rounded out
his educational experience as an apprentice of Jean-Louis Jalouneix,
notable French chef. A devotee of farmers markets, Drysdale has
translated his passion for fresh produce into sustainable cooking,
and has applied it into each of his culinary ventures. Drysdale has
opened a number of Bay Area restaurants and is currently a partner
in seven Bay Area projects.
8
Twenty Five Lusk – Chef Matthew Dolan
Chef Matthew Dolan has been working in restaurants since
he was 14 years old. He attended the Culinary Institute of
America and was schooled hard knocks-style with “salty old
European chefs.” Dolan took his first plunge into the chef
world at Café des Artistes in New York. He then went on
to work with Emeril Lagasse, now-famous New Orleans chef,
an experience that helped further refine Dolan’s technique.
While he traveled extensively, it was in San Francisco that
he made his biggest mark to date, first as executive chef
at Garibaldi’s and then in 2010 opening Twenty Five Lusk
with former culinary school pal (and now general manager)
Chad Bourdon. Over the last few years at the restaurant,
Dolan has developed and fine-tuned his “approachable
fine dining” ideology.
Trattoria da Vittorio – Chef Vittorio D’Urzo
More than a decade after first arriving in San Francisco
to work at his uncle’s Mill Valley restaurant, Piazza D’Angelo,
Vittorio returned to the West Portal neighborhood. Vittorio,
like so many other bambini, learned the nuances of kitchen
life next to his mother. She taught him about food, cooking,
and also to share its nourishment with others. Those lessons
have served him well in his career. For over 15 years, Vittorio
has traveled the world honing his skills as a front-of-the-house
specialist, waiting for the appropriate time to create his own
dining space. His resume includes management positions
at Piazza D’Angelo, Burlingame’s Ecco, Sapore Italiano,
Locanda Positano, and Limone.

Sangha Singh
Sangha started coming to TEL HI when he was in
preschool. At just four years old, an accident put him in
a coma and he was hospitalized for an extended period
of time. He struggled developmentally afterward. But
with the love from his single mom and support from his
kindergarten teachers, TEL HI staff, and our dedicated
volunteers, Sangha makes progress every day. Group
games help him improve his motor skills and socialemotional development. He’s learned to count to 20
and can write his own name now. We’re working on
the rest of the alphabet. And in the meantime, Sangha
loves to put on his Superman cape, run around on the
playground, and pretend to save the world!

Ying Qi Lao (Kaylee)
The Ortiz Brothers
Three-year-old Ying Qi Lao (Kaylee) is enrolled in TEL
HI’s preschool. She and her parents emigrated from a
small town in China. They now live in Chinatown with
Kaylee’s grandmother, who helped welcome them here
to start a better life. The preschool’s bilingual teachers
help Kaylee learn English and communicate with her
peers. Kaylee’s mother studies English at City College of
San Francisco, while Kaylee’s father is a chef’s assistant
to help support the family financially. We are hopeful
that Kaylee can stay at TEL HI at least until she’s ready
for kindergarten!
The Ortiz brothers receive care and support every day
from TEL HI’s North Beach-Chinatown Beacon program.
Raising three teenage boys is a challenge, especially for
the Ortiz family, who lost their mother to cancer five
years ago. Little brother Chester, a 6th grader, is now
in our film and leadership club, while Alex, a 7th grader,
participates in a variety of enrichment activities. Older
brother Tommy, a Galileo High School student, enjoys
returning to the Beacon program every day to support
his favorite staff as a Teen Helper.
“I am so happy and blessed that [my sons] have this program.
The TEL HI-Beacon team supports [my sons’] academic needs,
teaching them about leadership, life skills, and connecting
them to positive activities.”

Rosemary
Miguel Padilla Gomez
Rosemary has enjoyed TEL HI’s Senior Program for a
great number of years. At 95, she can no longer ride the
bus. So her daughter drives her to the center as often as
her schedule allows. Rosemary cherishes each and every
day that she can be at the center. Much as she wants to
be actively involved in the different activities offered,
she accepts the fact that her body can no longer do
all that. Rosemary enjoys conversing with other seniors,
participating in bingo games, and eating the healthy
lunches from Project Open Hand. She feels lucky to
be at TEL HI. And we feel even luckier to experience
Rosemary’s sunny, positive outlook and see how it keeps
her and her peers as strong and vibrant as possible.
Ninth-grader Miguel comes to TEL HI’s Beacon program
every day and stays until the staff goes home. He has
been coming for three years now, and we are so proud
of the positive changes he has made. Miguel lives with
his disabled mother and struggled to find positive
outlets. Three years ago, he was caught stealing
from school. But instead of banning him from the
afterschool program, we saw a need for intervention,
restorative justice practices, and intensive support
and mentorship. Now Miguel has become one of our
most transformed and dedicated young leaders.

FUND A NEED
Fund a Need is your chance to directly impact
the TEL HI programs that need the most
support and that you feel most connected
to. Each pledge is extremely meaningful to
us and appreciated, especially by the people
whose lives are improved because of TEL HI.
ALL FUND-A-NEED PLEDGES ARE 100 PERCENT TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
Teen Programs - $2,500
At TEL HI, we love teenagers and giving them opportunities for a
brighter future. Our Teen Center offers a fun, safe haven from the
hectic world. The Youth Employment Services, or YES Academy,
also gives teens job training, internships, college and career
counseling, and much more! The YES Academy helps deserving
teens achieve their full potential by cultivating their interests and
developing their work skills. Helping our youth today helps them
live healthier, happier, more enriching lives as adults.
A $2,500 donation will give 10 deserving teenagers a lifechanging opportunity to participate in the YES Academy.
Summer Camp - $5,000
Toddler and Preschool Programs - $1,000
TEL HI’s Summer Camp gives urban neighborhood kids a chance to
experience summer in a way they never could before. Throughout
the summer, kids participate in a wide range of discovery
learning activities, for example: gardening, art, acting, sports,
academic enrichment, and of course, field trips! Through these
activities, children gain social skills and a sense of self-worth and
confidence—while making lifelong friendships and memories.
Children ages 18 months to 5 years of age spend the day playing,
laughing, and learning at TEL HI. They form important bonds and
friendships here, while engaging in activities that enhance their
development. Having a multilingual staff allows us to help all of our
children flourish and grow, especially those who come to us not
knowing English. Our high-quality toddler and preschool programs
focus on a child’s individual needs and learning style. And thanks to
recent facility renovations, we’ve been able to increase the number
of families we serve.
A $5,000 donation will allow eight children, who otherwise
could not participate, to enjoy four weeks of summer camp.
Help us achieve a $20,000 challenge match for our summer
camp program.
20
FUND A NEED
A $1,000 donation will give scholarships to two deserving
children and families for a full month of preschool.

FUND A NEED
Student-Athlete Training Program - $500
TEL HI believes in using sports training to help motivate students
to do better in school—and in life. So Kenion Training 7-on-7 is a
program within TEL HI. To earn the privilege of playing with Kenion
Training’s top-notch coaches, TEL HI kids are required to keep their
grades up and attend regular tutoring sessions. They also get help
prepping for the SAT and ACT exams. Through this amazing athletic
and academic experience, these kids learn discipline and valuable
competitive skills. Our goal is to see all of them head off to college
and become leaders and mentors in their own communities.
A $500 donation will give one student athlete invaluable support
and direction through the Kenion Training 7-on-7 Program.

Founded in 1890, TEL HI (Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center) is
one of the oldest and most beloved community organizations in
San Francisco. For 125 years, we have supported children, families, seniors,
and our community through direct services and advocacy.
The neighborhoods around TEL HI make up an economically and socially
diverse community. Some of San Francisco’s most affluent citizens live here,
while at the same time, one out of every six children lives in poverty (in the
City’s northeast section). Our community is home to thousands of families and
seniors of mixed ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite
these differences, we are a community that works and lives together, sharing
many common goals.
TEL HI provides opportunities for individuals and families to enhance their
quality of life. Focusing on low- to moderate-income children, youth, families,
and seniors, we create and strengthen community bonds, provide health and
wellness programs, and broaden education and cultural experiences.
