Students are set high expectations for work and behaviour.” – ERO SPECIAL OLYMPICS 2013 On Wednesday this week, the Gore High School Lightning Boltz played in the annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament at the Gore Multi Sports Centre. There were a number of teams participating from Invercargill, Northern Southland and South Otago. There were 7 in each with each player rotating ensuring everyone had plenty of court time. Goals were scored by Maddi Knowles and Larissa McDonald. The team was well supported by Cameron Mitchell, Haidee McRae, Dana Turnball, Damian Mouat, T.J. Keenan, Thomas Orr and Samantha Crowe. The Special Olympics would like to thank Al Vercoe, Sarah-Jayne Green and Sophia Halder for their help on the day. The Lightning Boltz achieved 4th place after a great day of play. KI O RAHI TOURNAMENT Both the Junior and a Senior Gore High School Ki o Rahi teams travelled to Invercargill recently to participate in the Southland Schools Ki o Rahi tournament. The Junior team had some close games, winning one and narrowly losing the other two. The Senior team played well against some very strong competition, but unfortunately did not manage a win. Everyone had a lot of fun competing. It was a great to see so many schools attending. The game started evenly, but some crucial intercepts saw South Otago High School leading the game at half time. Gore High School made a comeback in the third quarter, scoring evenly with South Otago. However they were unable to sustain this performance in the final quarter seeing South Otago High School winning with a score of 35-42. The team would like to thank South Otago High School for making the trip south. The 9A Netball team looked very smart in their new team jackets, which have been sponsored by David Reid Homes, who the team would also like to thank for their support. While some of the other games were one sided, our Junior netballers showed excellent team spirit and fair play. Well done girls. Thanks to all the umpires - Morgan Craig, April Miller, Miss McIntyre and Mrs Ross. Hockey The girls started off a bit slow in the first half coming up against strong defence from South Otago High School. However they picked up their momentum in the second half, coming away with a resounding win. The boys went down by one goal early on, while our goal keeper was still getting on the field! However, Gore High School came back to dominate the game and also come away with a good win. Basketball The Gore High School team had a good start, „hustling‟ well and keeping the score close through much of the game. The opposition consisted mainly of players from their 1st XV rugby team, so the going was tough when getting rebounds. South Otago pulled ahead in the last half to take the win. Soccer The match started off slow, with Gore High School conceding an early goal. The boys began to work better as a unit, which quickly showed results with them levelling the score. South Otago responded by playing through their strikers, scoring two more quick goals. Just before the half time, Gore High School again evened up the score. The second half was totally different, with our team showing good team skills, keeping the momentum going for four more goals. David, Ben and Jeremy Mwangi as well as Ryan Carter controlled the mid field with some good passing. Man of the match was Ryan Carter for his hard work and endurance, chasing down everything in the midfield and generally playing some good football. The team will be playing St. Peters College on Wednesday 26th June at St. Peters. If can come along and watch, your support would be appreciated. AROUND THE WORLD AND BACK HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REVIEW This year, the Health and Physical Education Department is reviewing the Junior Health Programme. Under the Education Act 1989, the School is required to consult with the community with regards to the programmes we deliver to our students. The purpose of this consultation is to: Inform the school community about the content of the health curriculum. Ascertain the wishes of the school community regarding the way in which the health curriculum should be implemented, given the views, beliefs and customs of the members of that community. Determine in broad terms the health education needs of the students of the school. With this in mind, the Health and Physical Education Department would like you to complete a short online survey. This survey will ask you to indicate how you rate the importance of a range of topics regarding your child‟s health and wellbeing. There is also the opportunity to make any comments on these topics. To participate please visit this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/33NWYK3 If you wish to discuss any aspect of this survey or the Health Programme, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Smith, at the school, on 208 9130.
