DON’T WAIT, ORDER NOW!! www.AfricanDiasporaDVD.com Welcome to ADIFF 2015! Welcome to the world of the African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF). In our reality, people of diverse origins, nationalities, orientations and backgrounds come together to celebrate the world of images and ideas that depict the human experience of people of color all over the world. The international Black communities—whether in Europe, Latin America or Africa – continue to play a disproportionately marginal role in the art of cinema. Further, many creative and visionary films lay languid, collecting dust without the light of a screening due to the lack of distribution structures or movie theaters in the hands of more sensitive programmers. Stereotypical images, myths and persistent bad taste characterize many of the films that pass for “good movies” in the name of a “numbers” game that determines whose world will get to be shown and whose won’t. By placing the spotlight on innovative films that otherwise would be ignored, ADIFF has created a privileged platform for many of these films. The list of titles that have found a distribution deal thanks to their participation in the festival is long and still growing. We thank filmmakers, ADIFF’s old and new family of cinephiles, the theaters, ADIFF’s former and current staff and all those who, against all odds, have helped us for the last twenty two years in our mission to enhance the cultural DNA of New York City and beyond. We thank you all and wish you a wonderful ADIFF 2015! Reinaldo B. Spech Diarah N’Daw-Spech ADIFF Directors GET YOUR AFRICAN and AFRICAN DIASPORA DVDs TODAY! Sexual violence against women has been used as a weapon of war for years in the violence-ridden and poverty-stricken DRC. In order to provide medical, psychological and emotional aid to the victims, Dr. Mukwege founded the Panzi hospital in Bukavu in 1999. Besides his work as a physician Dr. Mukwege also defends human rights and seeks to raise global awareness on the issue of sexual violence in his country. His work is not without danger, as Dr. Mukwege experienced in 2012, when armed men entered his home and started shooting. Dr. Mukwege and his family survived the attack, but his guard was killed. The doctor now lives cloistered in his hospital in Bukavu under the protection of the United Nation peacekeepers. The women, whose physical and emotional integrity and dignity have been restored, stand beside him, true activists for peace and justice. Directed by Thierry Michel and Colette Braeckman, 2015, Belgium/Congo, 113min, documentary in French, English, Swahili and Mashi with English subtitles. Panel Discussion with Director Thierry Michel, Congolese Journalist / activist Chouchou Namegabe, and other speakers TBA. Live performance, comedy sketches, dance, interviews and archive shed light on the music and the generation that embraced it. Lovers Rock allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing through dance- known as ‘scrubbing’- at parties and clubs.
