Activity Centre Diary and News for August
August 2016
Prime News is the monthly event diary of The Derby and District MS Society
based at the Derby MS Activity Centre
10th Anniversary Celebrations
The Derby MS Activity Centre celebrated it’s 10th Birthday on Sunday 10th July.
The Centre played host to Entertainment from the Ilkeston Brass Band, The Parkinson’s Choir, Ladies from Moonhare tribal Belly
dancing and Alison Milner. Stalls included Tombola, Hook a duck, Bric a brac, a wonderful
Cake stall and many others.
The weather stayed fine up until 4:30pm when
the entertainment was diverted inside, due to a
rather heavy downpour.
A big thank you to everyone who attended the celebrations is was great to see Don
Prime, Derek Hathaway and Derek Golson, our own
members and even some friends from other branches
in the area.
Ilkeston Brass Band also took the opportunity to present a cheque to the
centre of £610.00 raised
from a concert in May.
Again thankyou to everyone who attended, volunteered and donated to
our special day.

Free training session for MS Carers at
Derby MS Activity Centre
Do you know safe ways to assist the person you care for
to move or transfer?
Do you know how to prevent injuries to yourself when moving &
assisting someone or moving equipment?
07th September & 14th September 1:30pm—4:30pm
As well as working with people as a Physiotherapist I also deliver training to
Carers which includes moving and positioning training. Family Carers often
don’t get access to this training which is compulsory for Carers working in
care homes or hospitals. They therefore miss out on very relevant and useful
information on how to assist people to move in a safe and effective way and
at the same time prevent injury to themselves and the person they care for.
Several Carers have asked me to provide some training and I am now looking
to run a small group session for about 3 hours, in either May or June. I have
run similar sessions with family Carers before and the sharing of information
and discussions that occurred people found really valuable.
The session would include learning about:

Safe ways to assist someone to move

The unsafe ways to move someone that could cause injury

How the back gets injured and how to look after it

How to deal with someone falling

Tips on car transfers, getting wheelchairs in and out of cars
If you think you would be interested in attending a training session please
speak with Kay or Becca at the Centre, leaving your name and number and
any particular areas you would like support in around moving & handling.
Many thanks, Melanie
